History:
Maximo was the sort of creature who was never destined for anything beyond his humble origins as a miner for his tribe. While exceptionally good at his task, he never considered taking up arms against the darkness of the world above, as his tribe had done a very good job of hiding itself deep below the surface. And when his tribe stumbled across a tribe of chokers, he was chased off and separated from his tribe. It certainly seemed as if he was not long for this new and dark world.

Fate, however, had other plans.

As he ran through the dark, he stumbled and fell over, certain his end was near. But at the last moment, a large, perfectly white weasel chittered nearby, showing him a tight escape route. Clambering after the strange mammal, he eluded his choker pursuers and crawled to safety. Following this oddly intelligent weasel, Maximo stumbled into what appeared to be the ruins of a temple, walls carved with Draconic and statues of proud-looking kobold warriors lining the center. At the end sat a large pool with a dragon seemingly springing from the surface. Ushered by his new guide, Maximo started to read the inscriptions all around the odd temple... and what he learned astounded him.

Much to Maximo's shock, he had been guided by this white weasel, named Ryx, to a temple of Apsu. But this temple was of supreme importance. According to the lore along the walls, every century or so, a kobold is chosen by Apsu to train in the art of war, and sent out to save the world when darkness threatens to swallow it. Called the "Talon of Apsu", this kobold would be given extraordinary might by the First Dragon and tasked with the unthinkable - saving the world. Maximo had been chosen by Ryx to undergo the training of becoming Apsu's Talon.

Scared and nervous, Maximo reluctantly took on the task, practicing with the weapons stored in the temple and studying the archaic inscriptions on the walls. The waters of the pool magically kept him fed and provided clean water, and after 3 years of training, Maximo emerged as "Steel" Maximo, the first champion of Apsu in over 100 years. Although he still have plenty to learn of the power he wields, with Ryx at his side, he is hopeful that it will be enough to turn the tide of darkness, and make Apsu proud.

Personality:
Maximo acts big and tough in the face of tribulation, but in reality, he's putting on a big show. He is in fact a total coward and would love nothing better than to run for safety when things get hairy. However, he understands that this would disgrace his patron, Apsu, and as long as innocents or allies remain committed to the fray, Maximo relentlessly stands firm. Although he is easy to frighten and would hardly call himself a leader, he has moments of daring from time to time that cast doubt on his cowardice, even for him, and it's hard not to see the bold and epic hero that lies unpolished inside the little kobold.

Maximo's training period has resulted in him awakening aspects of his draconic lineage, and he takes great pride in these features. He has learned some of the magic inherent to his kin and hopes for the chance to expand on these tricks. Unlike most paladins, Maximo sees little wrong in setting up ambushes to take his foes by surprise. After all, his enemies will not have any quarrel with doing the same, and his natural lack of strength makes the fight unfair; he's just evening the playing field. Ryx is constantly at Maximo's side, ever alert for danger and seemingly doing his best to guide the kobold in the right direction... though he does seem to get a bit bigger every time Maximo turns around. As his divine guide, Maximo trusts that Ryx knows what he is doing and if the weasel leads the way to something, he will follow, whether he likes it or not.

Although he rarely makes use of it in battle, Maximo carries around a keepsake from his days with his tribe: an old pickaxe that he considers to be lucky. He had it when Ryx saved his life and led him to his current duty, and he hasn't died yet, so he believes it has some quality that is keeping him safe, despite the fact it's just an old tool he is fond of.
