Lol @ Aquan. :)
I think it makes sense to pick a language that as many characters as possible have already, so that we have to spend fewer skill ranks overall to do it (and I don't necessarily like the meta-gamey-ness of learning a random language out of nowhere with no speakers of it around). With that in mind, Orc or Goblin would probably be the best choices, although RP-wise Saria would be more than happy to take the time to teach everyone else Elven. For a bit more deus ex machine, Saria would be pretty stoked to learn Celestial. ;)
Kelrot |
Lol I was just kidding about Aquan. We probably aren't even aware of its existence.
I would be fine learning Elven, but how common is that? Rashid definitely speaks it, and I wouldn't be surprised if Kozac and others did too. Goblin is probably least likely. Bianka is half orc too, so that's always a point against orc if she can speak it.
Arqueros weiß, dass ich in der Lage bin
Arqueros knows I am able
I'm fine with whatever though
Korza Ren |
By my count, there are three party members each who speak Goblin, Orc, and Elven, so they're all even in terms of how many party members would have to learn them. But, we already know that at least two npc's speak Elven (possibly more) and at least one npc speaks Orc, just out of the ones we've already met. So just with that in mind, goblin would probably be the most likely choice (just going by the math).
But, as Kelrot does speak Draconic, and I presume Kelrot would be proposing the idea of a shared language to the party, it wouldn't be unreasonable that the rest of us might learn it from him. That's only a little meta-gamey.
But those are all just suggestions. I'm fine with going along with the party's decision on this.

Just to clarify, is the thing about the scouts something Luca was told/believes, or has that been established somewhere? I was looking through the setting overview, and as far as I can tell the city gates haven't been opened in any of our lifetimes before the newcomers arrived.
It probably wouldn't change Korza's response either way, but I wanted to make sure.
Kelrot |
I thought I had read somewhere scouts had left the city but not gone much further than a mile or so. I could definitely be mistaken though. Honestly I could have paid more attention during recruitment. It was my first try at getting into a PbP, and I wasn't really expecting to be chosen. Thanks for that by the way! Been having a blast so far.

It's entirely possible that I'd left something in the setting information that left it ambiguous, but I had meant to establish that there hadn't been anyone outside the walls in living memory.
On the other hand, if it wasn't 100% clear, I've got no trouble whatsoever rolling with the thought that there had been a couple of scouting attempts.
Korza Ren |
Thanks for clearing that up. I don't have any problem with that either. I don't mean to nitpick, I just wanted to be on the same page as everyone else.
Adrienne Caeletha |
Yeah i don't mind either way. Personally i prefer the "no one has been outside the walls in memory" angle even better though
Lucatiel |
I forgot about the "in living memory" part. That's near 1000 years since elves live within the walls and I find that really hard to believe. Are PC's can't be the only ones in recent history to want to leave. And I doubt at least one person in all that time hasn't tried. It may not have been sanctioned and they may not have come back. That I can believe considering what awaits us in dark each night. A small group would probably have been overrun immediately.
But this a moot point since we probably aren't heading back any time soon. Sorry for confusing people.
Korza Ren |
No worries. And yeah, out of character, I have no trouble believing that someone snuck out or found some other way into the desert.
Geesyl Graftfinger |
GM, Geesyl has the ability to prepare an extract to try and comprehend languages. Would you allow her to try to use that to interpret the odd writing?
Kelrot |
It's been nearly two weeks. I suspect this is over. Anyway I can remove the campaign from my list or is it just there now?
Gruknuk |
I believe it, like the alias you selected for this campaign, will stand for all eternity as reminder of what could have been.
OllieTwist |
Probably too little, too late, but I'm still alive, things are mostly okay, just busy and stressful. Which, when combined with a poor sense of time ("okay i'm tired and it hasn't been too long since i've posted, i'll go to sleep and get it in the morni- what do you mean it's been four days") and some very fun anxiety regarding thinking it's been too long to recover from and I should probably just avoid even looking at the boards from now on, isn't very conducive to getting things done.
I'd totally understand if you guys don't want to give me another shot, I'd definitely be peeved in your situation. I really am incredibly sorry that I let it get this bad, and am thinking of ways to keep myself on top of the ball and more reliably present.
Korza Ren |
Well, I still have a character sheet and more free time than I'm willing to admit. So as long as my fellow players continue showing up, I'll be here.
And anyway, two weeks isn't the longest I've gone without hearing from a GM ;P
Saria Dalavon |
I'm still here and ready to play, and I've totally been there on the "I've-messed-up-it's-been-too-long-everyone-will-hate-me-I-should-just-hide -in-a-corner" feeling. In fairness, I've had it plenty in real life, not just in PbP. If it helps, just remember that late's far better than never, and it's easier for people to get back into a stalled story than it is to get into an entirely new game.
Gruknuk |
Hey, GMing is hard. If you want to keep playing, I'd love to continue. If you're busy, that's cool. Real life is more important than a game.
When's the next chance I'll be able to play a goblin, anyways? :b
OllieTwist |
Hey, that's fine. Unfortunately, I did get a no when I reached out to Kelrot, so the question is now how we want to handle that.
Would you prefer not to continue without the whole party, would you rather try to find a 6th person to join, or would you rather continue without him, whether that's retconning him coming with the group or having me figure out a way to write him out?
Korza Ren |
I would be fine continuing as a party of five. However you choose to handle his departure, I can roll with it.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to say so. I'm sorry for keeping you guys strung along as long as I did, it wasn't fair to anyone. If I get to a point where I've actually got the time and energy to dedicate to DMing a game like this, you guys will be the first to know, but I realize it wasn't a realistic thing for me at this point. Sorry again, hope to see you all around.
