Last time I posted here was over a year ago, wow. I've done a lot of PF-related art since then, so... Sorry about the incoming flood, I guess!

Most of the art I've done has been for a campaign I've been in that's going to have been going for 5 years come September, and mostly of my own character, Renae, who is an Aasimar with 20 levels in Inquisitor and 2 in Slayer. Old reference with equipment labeled, (slightly NSFW) new reference, current character portrait, and showcasing a new, cool homebrew ability.

Also from that campaign: Character portraits for Captain Stand (human paladin 20/fighter 2) and Londrich Grocth (human(?) sorcerer 12/dragon disciple 10).

From other campaigns: Comparison shot of two of my characters with accidentally similar designs. On the left is Satrina, human gestalt bloodrager/skald, and on the right is Eir, aasimar gestalt paladin/oracle. Satrina having some aberrant bloodline issues. (Another slightly NSFW)reference image for a half-orc Brawler.

And, finally, an illustrated character sheet as an example for something I might try to offer commissions of, if that's a thing people would have any interest in. This character is for a Hell's Rebels game on the Paizo forums.

Hey! Definitely count me as interested, I love a good rebellion plot, so Hell's Rebels seems right up my alley. I've also got a couple character concepts I'd be interested in playing, but I want to ask what kind of character you particularly need or would like to see? Looking at what you have currently, I'm thinking a tanky melee frontliner would be useful, but if there's something else you guys would prefer, I can definitely pull something else together.

Another question for you! One of the classes I'm going with for my character is unchained Summoner, and I'm curious about how the Fighting stat interacts with their eidolon. Does the eidolon get one to work off of? Does it use mine? Or is that just for PCs and eidolons/animal companions just use the bonuses as they're written?

... It's possible I might just be totally misunderstanding how Fighting works, too, so sorry if this is way off-base.

Dotting again, still working on some concepts, but I should definitely be able to throw something together in the next few days.

A couple things I wanted to ask on clarification on, though! On the note about monks and unarmed combat, is that monks are counted 4 levels higher than everyone else, giving them normal advancement, or monks are counted 4 levels higher than they actually are? I figure it's probably the first option, but I wasn't 100% sure on the wording. Also, probably a silly question, but are Brawlers functioning the same way?

Also probably kind of a silly question, but fractional advancement is still just using the better of the two options between your classes, yeah?

I'm definitely interested in this, oh man. After Deadpool and Infinity War I am definitely feeling superheroes, and gestalt is always a ton of fun. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and seeing what kind of concepts I come up with, for sure.

Helikon wrote:
Btw ollietwist is that your first chronicle for that character?

Technically yes, since this is my first time playing Iantha? But, I was given a chronicle for the first PFS game I played where I was playing a pregen and was told that it could be applied once I had an actual character. Is that accurate?

Hey, that's fine. Unfortunately, I did get a no when I reached out to Kelrot, so the question is now how we want to handle that.

Would you prefer not to continue without the whole party, would you rather try to find a 6th person to join, or would you rather continue without him, whether that's retconning him coming with the group or having me figure out a way to write him out?

I'm not super familiar with the setting, but I'm definitely here for evil campaigns and also kingdom building. Familiarity is easy enough to fix, anyways. I've got a character concept I would probably be going with, but I haven't decided yet if I'm going Bard or Oracle. Either way, dotting for sure, and I can probably have something thrown together after work tonight.

For the record, I haven't posted yet in gameplay, but I would like to hear from Geesyl and Kelrot before I jump back in to the game. I'll be sending them some PMs if I haven't heard anything in a few more days, and then I'll get right back into it.

Probably too little, too late, but I'm still alive, things are mostly okay, just busy and stressful. Which, when combined with a poor sense of time ("okay i'm tired and it hasn't been too long since i've posted, i'll go to sleep and get it in the morni- what do you mean it's been four days") and some very fun anxiety regarding thinking it's been too long to recover from and I should probably just avoid even looking at the boards from now on, isn't very conducive to getting things done.

I'd totally understand if you guys don't want to give me another shot, I'd definitely be peeved in your situation. I really am incredibly sorry that I let it get this bad, and am thinking of ways to keep myself on top of the ball and more reliably present.

Yep, go for it!

It's entirely possible that I'd left something in the setting information that left it ambiguous, but I had meant to establish that there hadn't been anyone outside the walls in living memory.

On the other hand, if it wasn't 100% clear, I've got no trouble whatsoever rolling with the thought that there had been a couple of scouting attempts.

To be fair, let's look at the people Alran sent to Axiom. You've got Rashid, who has way too much money and not enough sense, and Iryna, whose image is found in the dictionary next to the phrase "Lawful A*#@%~#". Important figures or not, this is entirely kind of a weird group to try and foster diplomatic relations with, haha.

I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of money to be made with the way profession works - with the roll you made for Kelrot, he'd be making 7gp, but that's assuming a whole week's work, of which you have about half.

Either way, I threw up a post for, at the very least, what the party may have learned and what the caravan's been up to, but I do have another follow up that will be going up tomorrow.

I'd be alright with allowing profession to be something you could make untrained, you'd just never really be able to make a whole lot with it. Since there is also only three days before leaving Axiom, you also likely won't be able to make much.

If you would like to, though, Rashid doesn't really have any problems with the party owing him some gold. So, if there's something you'd like to buy and would be alright with just paying the gold later, then that's also an option.

Yes, I'm definitely still here! I'm very sorry for the delay, unfortunately work has decided that now is the time to open the gates of hell directly onto my face, so my work days have been 11-12 hours long and my energy levels have absconded to places I have yet to discover. Which isn't a whole lot of an excuse not to write a paragraph or two a day, but. That's where I've been, and I'll be making a very concentrated effort to stop being there, because I have plans and will be very disappointed if they never see the light of day.

Yeah, not a problem. I mean, for practicality's sake, Common is always English, because that's what we're speaking and writing in - I'd just assigned Esperanto as a nod, since it was created with the intention of being a sort of "common tongue", something that's easy to learn and use regardless of your first language. It's got pretty much the same origin and practical use as Common does in-universe.

Granted, that explanation was the only purpose having that in the list served, so now it's out on the table there's not a whole lot of point keeping it in there, haha.

Yeah, I'll keep that as Hmong, since it's already been used.

Languages:
Common: Esperanto
Elven: Arabic
Dwarven: Spanish
Human: Filipino
Orc: German
Halfling: French
Goblin: Hmong
Gnome: Zulu
Terran: Greek
Aquan: Hindi
Auran: Bosnian
Ignan: Punjabi
Draconic: Mandarin Chinese
Sylvan: Thai
Infernal: Czech
Abyssal: Croatian
Celestial: Ukrainian
Undercommon: Turkish

On the subject of languages, I did, at one point, assign real-world languages to the ones in Pathfinder, mostly so I'd have an easier time naming NPCs. I could post that list if it might make choosing something and staying consistent a little easier?

This is a tad later than I meant for it to be going up, but the gameplay thread for this game is up and running right over here!

Alright, so! I've thought a bit about the submitted characters, and I've come to a decision on who I'm going to choose to start out.

So, to begin, the party is going to consist of:

  • Gruknuk
  • Korza Ren
  • Geesyl Graftfinger
  • Kelrot
  • Lucatiel
  • Saria Dalavon

Thank you so much to everyone who applied! To those of you who did not quite make it into the final party, I am going to be keeping you in mind in the event that I need to fill in a spot a bit later on.

For right now, I've got the discussion thread up and running over here, so please head over that way and get yourself situated. I'll hopefully have the gameplay thread up and running some time tonight, and we can really get this ball rolling.

Hey, just a quick reminder that the character submission deadline is at the end of Sunday the 2nd, and I'll be making a decision by the end of Monday. So if you've got something you haven't finished yet and you'd like to, now's the time!

Fair? Probably. Good? Not in my opinion I would prefer it if the companion got a bonus to armor and weapons before level 8. May I instead, split the bonuses up? For instance, at level 8 we get armor +1/+1 and Weapon +1/+1. This is meant for duel wielding but can I split it between her bow and the horses natural weapons? Weapon +2 would work the same way. Either +2 on one weapon or split +1/+1. The once a day re-attunement would allow me to change either PC or animal companion. Same for resistance, deflection, nat armor, etc. Physical and mental prowess has to be split per +2 and as long as I don't go over the maximum for any one ability, they can be split any way.

I think that could wind up nerfing you pretty badly in the long run. Yeah, ideally, an amount of your wealth should be going to your mount, but it shouldn't be as limiting to your PC's growth as that would wind up being.

As a compromise, how does having your mount's HD count as their level sound? They'll start getting bonuses at a much lower level, but the progression still won't be as fast as yours, and it won't go quite as high.

Zayne Iwatani wrote:
I think my character is the only one affected here but there is no consensus on how to handle Animal Companions with Automatic Bonus Progression. It was lazy of Paizo to not factor that in, unless "all character's" means literally everyone. I am fine with the AC getting the same progression but that is probably unfair. On the other hand, not having any bonuses or having to split them is going to be harmful as well.

Yeah, that seems like kind of a tricky situation. I think it's probably intended for you to be spending your own money on your companion's gear, but that's only so viable when this ruleset also removes the items you'd be buying them from play. I think what I'm going to go with is allowing your companion to take the bonus progression as well, but will count as four levels lower than you are for the sake of determining bonuses. Sound fair?

I don't have a problem with it. It definitely seems like something that would be fitting, and it's nothing you'll be breaking my game with.

Unrelated, giving it until the 8th for character submissions was definitely too long, and it seems like those have slowed down some. I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but when I come back, I should be able to make some selections and get this ball rolling for real. So, updated cutoff point for character submissions will be April 2nd!

Okay, sweet. I have a couple of WoP characters currently, so I'm getting fairly used to the system. Really fun, and it works great with PBP.

I've had an idea for an ice-type blaster kicking around for a while. Just a couple of questions before I finish off the build:

1: Say I want to cast a fireball that leaves a cloud of smoke behind afterwords. Would this be possible, or would the smoke dissipate instantly because it's 'instantaneous?' (By RAW, it should go away immediately.)

2: Does the Human Favored Class Bonus for sorcerers (one bonus spell known) give me an extra spell or an extra word?

3: How do feats that give a bonus to one spell apply to Words? Could I take Spell Specialization (Wrack) and get the bonus to Wrack+Fog Bank?

4: I'm thinking a silver dragon/primal elemental water (wildblooded) crossblooded sorcerer. Can I have a wildblood bloodline as one of my bloodlines, or do they both have to be normal bloodlines?

Thanks.

1. I think that is something I would be okay with workshopping a little, because it is a cool idea and I'd like for it to be possible, but not without at least a small increase to spell level when you'd want to add the secondary effect. It's definitely something I'm open to working with you on.

2. That'll be an extra word.

3. Hm. I think, since Spell Specialization is usually for a single spell, I'd have you take the feat for the specific combination of words you wanted to use. So if you wanted the bonus for Wrack+Fog Bank, you'd have to designate that when you took the feat.

4. I'm okay with one of your bloodlines being wildblooded, it seems to me that the only reason they might not be compatible would be semantics.

Michelle A.J. wrote:
I'm alright with those rules. Do you use Hero Points strictly RAW or do you have your own variation?

Hero Points are by RAW.

Also, dang, the dice just really want you to play this cleric, Rennaivx. Talk about luck.

I did have a question for you for the sake of writing backgrounds: you said this is after the events of lotr, by how much?

@Rennaivx- Yeah, I'm going to rule no on being proficient with shields as weapons without the trait. Looking at an archetype for another class that focuses on fighting with a shield, it specifies that they gain proficiency with them as weapons, so it seems like just having regular shield proficiency wouldn't grant that.

@Daedalus- Hm. I've only ever actually seen Words of Power used in a game once, and I wasn't the DM or the player using it, so I'm only familiar in passing. Still, I'm not seeing much reason to not allow it, so if you're comfortable using them, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to.

That does remind me, though, more relevant to everyone - there were a few alternate rules/house rules that I've played with so long and so consistently that I honestly and completely forgot they weren't part of base game. But, since I didn't put them in the OP, I don't really want to say just "OH BTW WE'RE USING THESE THINGS HOPE THAT'S COOL" and I'd rather see what you're all comfortable with. So, usually when I've played, it's been using Hero Points and with crits/crit fails outside of combat. Usually all the crit/crit fails means is an auto-success on a 20 (plus a reduced effect, if it's on a save, extra information on a knowledge, etc) and an auto-fail on a 1 (increased effect on a save, blatantly false information on a knowledge, etc) but it will sometimes add some hilarity. Again, I won't use either of these if there's anyone who isn't comfortable with them, I honestly had just completely forgotten that they weren't always a thing.

It's very tempting to throw a Bloodrager together, because I love them, but I opted to keep running with my original idea, since I had the sheet half-finished, anyways.

So, for your consideration: Bea Boffin, hobbit slayer. This doesn't have a whole lot of backstory/personality info or anything like that on it, and I'm not sure how much you'd want, as far as that's concerned, but I can write that up in a bit.

Yeah, go for it. Rearrange to your heart's content.

Hey, I'm glad to see anyone's interested, haha! I did give a solid three weeks for character submissions (... which maybe was on the long side, in hindsight) so I'm definitely still accepting them.

There has been a good bit more interest than I was expecting, though, which is kind of blowing me away. It does mean that a few characters may not be able to make it in, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Another option I'm considering if there do wind up being a high enough number of submissions finished in that time is just sort of splitting it into two parties and sending them off to different locations, letting them possibly influence what happens in the other game. It would be a lot for me to keep up with as a DM, but it's something I've always wanted to do, so I'm keeping it in mind as a possibility.

@Zayne- yep. Axiom is a big city, but it's limited by the wall, and those gates haven't opened in so long, there's been some ongoing conversation on whether or not they should just be walled off, too. The desert's dangerous, dude, don't go out there.

@Daedalus- I love me some monster races, please play them. I'd have to give some serious thought to how Drow work, since their traditional culture and flavor doesn't really fit with Axiom as a starting point. I'm going to say yes to Drow (with the exception of Noble Drow, because hahahahaha) but if that's something that interests you, then I'd like to work out what that means in the context of Axiom with you.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 5) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11

Dang, not bad at all. Hopefully, I can come up with something fun, here.

I didn't really care about the rolls though. This is the perfect game for a horselord cavalier. I don't see mention of Horses though, or any animals. Would you mind terribly if another faction was added. Either Horselords or Beastmasters. Every large city needs its major entertainment and I was thinking horse racing. Or, since the city if so diverse, maybe have a menagerie of animals for all kinds of events with horse racing the most popular currently.

Horses and other animal keeping would be mostly the business of the Agricultural Quarter, with horses in particular kept to the more spacious areas out by the outer walls of the city. There's only so much space, though, so while there are definitely horse farms, there's only so many, and actually owning a horse yourself is pretty rare and impressive. Either way, racing could definitely be a major source of entertainment for a lot of people.

I'll be sending you a PM with some questions.

I'm definitely not going to make you re-roll, it's something I think I'll be able to balance things out on my end with some trial and error, so long as you're okay with knowing that I'll probably be poking you a little harder than the other players. HOWEVER, I will leave that up to you and the other interested players. If you think you would feel more comfortable rerolling, or if the other players feel like they would be more comfortable if you did, then that decision is up to you.

(If anyone is less than entirely comfortable posting publicly about that, then you're welcome to PM me about it. I personally doubt that there will be any issue as far as people getting upset, but I'd understand being uncomfortable, so I want to make sure you know the offer is open.)

Also this was something I meant to reply to, whoops. Yeah, that's a safe assumption. I also want to clarify, in case it isn't totally clear: Crafting as a skill is fine, and I don't have an issue with it if you want to craft mundane/alchemical items or poisons. It's just when it winds up being how the party is getting most or all of their gear that it starts to be less fun (for me, in any case.) That being said, if there's ever an item in particular that you really want on your character, let me know and I can see about that winding up in a loot pile somewhere.

It occurs to me that this does not actually answer the question that was asked, whoops. So, in more detail (and to add some points that should have been included to begin with):

The humanoid core races are all about equally common. Especially in Axiom, given its isolation, which has lead to most of them being intermixed pretty thoroughly. What you put on your sheet is mostly for the sake of crunch - there's barely any full-blooded humanoid races, and many of them will exhibit some amount of mixed features. The captain of the guard, for example, is a Gnome, but he's got enough tells to know that there's more than a bit of Goblin in him. That isn't out of the ordinary.

People with enough Orc/Goblin/similar blood in them to be played as full-blooded versions of their race are more rare, but are about on par with, say.... Elves in most settings. You don't see them everywhere, but you don't stop and stare when you do.

The native outsiders have probably been changed the most, as they are, rather than being a rare occurrence in an otherwise non-outsider family, a set of races all their own, which can't interbreed with the humanoid races. They are similarly pretty closely related at this point, but racial magic does tend to keep the divides a little more obvious. Still, it can get a little ambiguous sometimes. There's a cleric who works in the Temple who could just as easily be a Tiefling as she could be an Aasimar, and you might not know until you say her cast Daylight. These races are more rare, and are about on-par with where half-elves/half-orcs might be usually. You probably know a few, but it's not something you expect to see all the time.

Anything not mentioned there is probably a little less common again than that.

You are a citizen of the city of Axiom, and, until last week, you believed your city was alone in the world.

Hey! So, I've been poking around at making this campaign setting for about a year or so, and while schedules made it difficult to get terribly far in traditional campaign format, it was still something that I'd like to get running, in some form or another. Ideally, this is something that would be a pretty long-term game, but what I've got planned could easily be pretty open-ended in terms of length, and easily adjusted according to interest. I am definitely new to play-by-post, so there might be a little bit of an adjustment period, but I'm not new to the game by any means.

The Basics: You are a citizen of an isolated, peaceful city, located in the middle of the desert, and as far as you knew, there was nothing beyond that. About a week ago, though, the speakers for the enigmatic creatures that have governed your city announced that an envoy would be making the journey through the desert for a diplomatic mission. For one reason or another, you are one of the few Axiomites selected to return with them to their city when they leave.

More detailed setting information can be found on this doc over here.

Character Creation and Rules:
Character Creation:
  • Stats are 4d6, drop lowest. You may reroll one result, and choose which to keep.
  • No 3PP material, most Paizo material is fine.
  • Exceptions to this are as follows: No crafting feats or Leadership. Also, Svirfneblin, Beastfolk races, and Gunslinger/gun-wielding characters are all part of the world, and may become available later in-game, but are locked to certain regions.
  • Start from Level 1.
  • Starting gold is average for your class.
  • Two traits, no drawbacks. Traits can come from any Paizo material, within reason (ask if you're concerned) but no two can be from the same category.
  • Automatic Bonus Progression will be in effect.
  • Homebrew rule: You may take a single flaw from this list for one additional feat. These flaws were made for 3.5, so some of them may not translate perfectly. In that case, or in the case of wanting to come up with something new, let me know, and I'll be happy to workshop something for you. I just like playing with flaws.

In addition to stats/alignment/race/class, I'd like to get the following from you about your character.
Personality: I don't need a huge amount of info from you, just a brief snapshot.
Backstory: Who are they in Axiom? What do they do? Are there any major life events I should know about?
Why were they selected?: This is a two-part question. What made them want to offer their name to leave with the caravan? Are they an academic, looking to uncover the world and learn what it might have to offer? Are they a thrill-seeker? Do they have big diplomatic goals? And then, why would they be selected? What skills do they bring to the table? They've lived in Axiom all their lives, surely they've built some kind of reputation doing something.

I'll be looking for ideally 4-6 players, but that number has some wiggle room, depending on how much of a response I get. Cut-off date is also up to some amount of debate, but as of right now, my current thought is at April 8th.

Let me know if you have any questions! I look forward to seeing what comes up.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm gonna be honest, I have a problem and that problem is drawing very very little but things relating to my pathfinder games. It's an issue.

Yasha Hadjiev and Callum Nives Ifrit Ranger/Inquisitor and Half-elf Bard respectively, also really great dance partners. Yasha is mine, Callum belongs to another player.

Iantha, Aasimar Monk.

Renae Stellatus, Aasimar Inquisitor, is actually the same character as Yasha, but after a long series of events involving a Linnorm's digestive system and the 'Reincarnate' spell. She opted to take a new name and let 'Yasha' stay dead.

Adelaide Smith, Tiefling noblewoman, socialite, and rage-fueled murder machine. By which I mean Bloodrager.

I haven't actually gotten to play these two yet - or even finish making them sheets - but these are a couple of concepts I'd really like to play around with some time. Lady Julia, the Half-Orc Paladin, and this Gnome Brawler whose name I dont know yet, but she came to me in a dream and that's weird enough alone to make me want to play her.

These last two aren't characters of mine, but they're scenes from a legend in the world of the campaign most of these characters are from.
The hero Carl receives a gift from the spirit of Eraname.
The hero Carl and his companions meet the spirit of Eraname's oceans, Sabitu.

Fromper wrote:

Speaking of barbarians and bloodragers, the other variation I've wanted to do forever, which I think I may actually do as my next Pathfinder Society PC, is a "civilized" barbarian. ie Someone urban and refined (possibly to the point of snobby), but warns people "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." This may end up being the bloodrager I'm currently looking at making.

I did this in a campaign I'm in recently, and it was a lot of fun. I was playing a Tiefling noblewoman who, outside of combat, was a very diplomatic character. She didn't stay very refined when combat started, because it's kind of hard to keep a whole lot of poise when your weapon of choice is an earthbreaker, but she kept the attitude up as much as possible. And then, if she was ever made angry enough to actually start her rage, she devolved straight from "Victorian English noblewoman" to a cockney obscenity-screaming blue dragon who was going to Vital Strike bite your face off.

Bloodrager is honestly one of my favorite classes, and they're definitely a good starting point for that sort of character concept, since they've sort of got an excuse for high charisma. Not that low charisma prevents anyone from being snobby and refined, but it can definitely help.
