If he accepts to a mind scan of his memories-- which is what he's suggesting, then there's a serious issue which HE cannot resolve between your technological recording and actual events by his own body.
Thus, he's clear (somewhat) and the tech is speaking truth. Issue-- doubtful without torture or tearing him apart as you said, will it be resolve.
Try compassion, unless you can't cut it. :)
Personally, I'd just throw him into the recycle bind, his soul will come out okay. I mean, he does have a patron deity, it'll sort out. Tee hee!

It specifically says spells. Now obviously, its from a system with hardly any tech(normal D&D), so one can't account for what doesn't exist.
However, it makes zero sense for him to be immune to tech that mess with his mind.
That would be like saying just because you're immune to fire, you're also immune to any forms of super hot energy. If the "fire" is up over several hundred if not thousand degrees, you will be burned.

Considering expulsion is my first reaction, perhaps a bit of enlightenment on my part is in order.
In DnD terms this was actually covered back in 2e, yes fire immunity covers any damage from the sun, now then, fire resistance 40, or 50, which most people would consider immunity would not completely protect you, like for example i could swim in lava and the only thing I would have to worry about is the weight, remember being on fire just does 1d6,
Now then I would not be happy in the actual sun but that would be mostly the gravity and the sheer quantity of light, and the questionable ability for me to be able to breath,
In this game space actually does cold damage and a large boat has a strong enough gravitational pull to have a meaningful atmosphere (not for long but more than the moon or the first planet in our solar system has in real life)

Why should a fire elemental ever take damage from fire? Just doesn't make sense to me.
if searing spell functions like piercing cold
then it shcould have the same mechanic that if the creature has immunity and the subtype (fire, in this case) then it is still immune but knows the fire is off (senses it is more powerful/dangerous than normal)

There is a precedent for not expelling a student for attempted murder, Headmaster. I believe that you and Professor Sunwake were the ones who initially taught me the meaning of mercy. And uncovered certain extenuating circumstances that were not at first obvious.

My DM's have an effective "you have been blown out of an airlock" damage system.... it goes as such:
in spacesuit- "you have x amount of time to reach ship and safety
out of spacesuit- "take x amount of damage per round..." x=the total number of every die on the table rolled until your arms are tired
it is a very effective and realistic tactic
