"If the wielder of a vril staff is a spellcaster, as a standard action, she can expend 1 charge and sacrifice a prepared spell or unused spell slot of 1st level or higher to channel the power through the staff as a blast of raw magical energy known as vril. This ray resolves as a ranged touch attack with a range of 30 feet, and the wielder chooses whether it deals damage or heals. The amount of damage dealt or healed by the ray is equal to 1d6 points per level of the spell sacrificed + 1 point per caster level of the wielder."
I think this is a cool effect. Would it be possible to adapt it to our magic item system? And if we could, how many EEs would it cost?

Garidan Vissir |

is it a giant pit?
Personally, I'm thinking it is a giant pit... with something in it! Pit 2.0!

Malthazir |

I was originally thinking of summoning dretches to cast stinking cloud, but there are too many friendlies in there for AoE attacks. Don't worry, I got something devastating in the works.

Niyut |

Stinking cloud is one of the best crowd control at our level. Clever thought. Did you decide to use your Essences? Unless you are saving for something, you are leaving power on the table.

Niyut |

I thought full blown extend would be good for a summoner. Enlarge would be good for your pit. Improving your saves is always wise.

Malthazir |

Extend is actually better for buffs, as most fights will end before my summons run out.
Enlarge can be nice, but very expensive.
As for undermining the bridge, perhaps with enough time. I can't imagine it as combat viable though. Besides, I cooked up a new summon that should drop chunks of the gnolls every turn :D

Niyut |

When the gnoll commander used the ice storm effect from the axe, it seemed like he added +3 damage to the effect above a normal ice storm. Was that an effect of the axe or one of his essences?

Niyut |

Also, Malthazir with three essences you could put a feat into one of your items. Are there any feats you would like?

Malthazir |

Malz isn't very feat hungry, especially since crafting feats won't be required in this game. I suppose he could pick up versatile summon monster or one of the other list-opening feats, but most of them aren't really worth it except maybe a trick here or there.
Improved initiative certainly wouldn't hurt.
What I would really want would be something like sacred summons, but Malz doesn't have an aura to work with (nor would he since he's N). That way he could save up for quicken metamagic and do quickened summons.

Niyut |

Hmm. Then I would do something like Dispel Magic or Spike Pit. Having them three times per day increases either your utility or you combat capacities per day.

Niyut |

There have certainly been times already when it could have helped a lot.

Niyut |

If you wanted standard action summons, you should have been an Arcanist (Occultist). :-p

Dalton Barrowwheel |

Arcanist is an abomination that I refuse to perpetuate.
What's the issue with it? I haven't looked into it so much.

Malthazir |

The problem isn't that it breaks the game (as a number of the other hybrid classes as well as other recently released classes do), it's that it makes all other similar classes inferior. It does the job of a wizard and a sorcerer simultaneously better than either class. All the versatility of a wizard, all of the spontaneity of a sorcerer. There are still cheesy tricks that can make the base classes have an edge (such as the infamous crossblooded orc/fire sorcerer), but barring that their class abilities even outshine the base classes.
Perhaps it's my paranoia based on what happened with 3.5. A continuous flood of additional content until the game is hopelessly broken and utterly drowned in mechanics. I appreciate more development, but I feel like with the release of every new book the game gets pushed higher and higher up in power.
End rant, sorry. Just one of my pet peeves.

Garidan Vissir |

Hmmm, don't recognize that there Dalton fellow...

Gruskorb |

My mistake!
Gruskorb has taken his movement for the round already if that's what's holding us; I made the post a bit early, though the action was so basic, I felt it easy to reorient as necessary.

Niyut |

I just think our illustrious is very busy with both work and life stuff.

Garidan Vissir |

No surprise if he is, the last couple of weeks haven't been exactly been smooth and easy for him.

Niyut |

Not at all.
The part of me that wants instant gratification wants fast and regular updates because this game is so awesome. But that angel(s?) of my better nature remind me that flooded houses and miraculous recoveries from near deaths of spouses take up both time and mental energy.
When things calm down I'm sure that the pace will pick back up.

Valjoen_GM |

Busy weekend with the wife still pretty tired, and the older girls with my Ex-wife. So, I was dealing with the baby all day, every day. Fun, but exhausting.
This week should be pretty light at work, so, I'll be posting frequently.

Niyut |

I asked a couple of questions last week. Did you have a chance to see them?

Malthazir |

Now that was satisfying. I love summoners.
Speaking of which, you will find on my summoned creatures section at the bottom of my character alias I have linked to a PDF that has a great deal of augmented stat blocks for summoned creatures. That should help significantly.

Where is the dire celestial platypus?

Niyut |

It's even better when you get fourth level spells, Malthazir, and get to train several of them together in a line so they get trampled multiple times.

Tear-assing through a campaign that isn't this one, which is exactly as it should be :).

I'm not sure if that one was celestial. Perhaps if one were to procure such a monotreme and feed it essences...

Garidan Vissir |

Damnit Gruskorb, do we need to stage an intervention for you? Because your platypus fixation is getting to a worrisome stage. I don't know if there's a "Platy-Non," but I'm sure we can manage something. Because friends don't let friends obsess over monotremes!

His essences... not part of the axe.

Valjoen_GM |

Could earth elementals undermine the land bridge?
Probably but would take a few rounds I'd assume.

Niyut |

Gruskorb is at Gen Con. Could it be possible to play his turn this round so that we might continue our combat today?

Valjoen_GM |

Oh, damn. I'm jealous. I went to GenCon in Milwaukee from 1991-2000 or so, then went back again in 2013. Loads of fun.
Sure. Go ahead and post his move.

Niyut |

@Malthazir: Would you summon an earth elemental not this round but next round to undermine the land bridge so we don't have to face more gnolls?

Niyut |

He said a couple of rounds in the post above: "Probably but would take a few rounds I'd assume."

Niyut |

I think it is terrifying that this gnoll priest has more than 90 HP. That's like more than three of me.

Gruskorb |

Thanks for stepping-in, Niyut; you rolled better than I would've for Gruskorb!

Yes, it's a blast! I thought I'd posted my notice ib this game too, but maybe the site didn't register it.
70,000+ people this year for the 50th anniversary. Some starfinder demos I hope to participate in tomorrow. True Dungeon is also a hoot with friends.

Niyut |

It looks like the gnolls went for this round does that mean we are all up and not simply Garidan?

Valjoen_GM |

Yea, I got them out of turn. Been a hectic last couple of weeks.. so difficult to keep everything straight in these larger scale fights especially when I'm only reading it once a day or so. Sorry.
I'm going to let everyone post now. We'll take Garidan's action first... then everyone else.

Niyut |

When you have a chance can you describe the path up the cliff that the gnolls came down? It's not depicted on the map. (Which is otherwise an amazing map.)

Niyut |

Garidan, have you been keeping track of your temporary HP generated by the people you kill due to your cruel enchantment? Depending on how many gnolls you killed before you were stabbed (at least 2) you should be much less injured.

Niyut |

Yeah, it looks like you would have had 10 temporary HP. Which means you only took 7 have the attack that hit you and now you have another 5 temporary HP if you need to soak more damage.

Valjoen_GM |

Player knowledge to help you envision this:
Basically, the priest has been casting Stone Shape for days on end in an attempt to build a bridge between the main portion of the world and this floating island in order to allow the gnoll/humanoid army to move towards Haemil. They build the largest portion coming down to within 50' of the lower "island". He has now moved to the lower "island" and building up the bridge. 20' is all that separates the gap now.
