Alright, since Gruskorb is back, we can settle the armor ownership :D.

Niyut, Malthazir, and Truk'tosh don't want it, so it's between Gruskorb and Garidan. I'm quite willing to let Gruskorb have it, since it'll double his armor bonus, while Garidan's only real benefit would be the lower weight compared to his chain shirt.

I'm guessing Gruskorb is playing grabass with Sprint once again. Wonder where Malthazir is hiding though?

Jolnar is the God of war, the three eyed warrior. He is also heavily worshiped by the dwarves. The dwarves of the Eastgate almost exclusively worship him. With the exception of some evil kingdoms, Halcyon's influence is generally accepted everywhere. She and Jolnar have a strong connection. His warriors lead the charge against evil, and the Sisterhood of Halcyon are of the battlefield medics.

So, while the dwarves had dedicated the font to Jolnar, it is not unsurprising that Halcyon interceded to heal you and the font.

No. I just got home late tonight.

DM, I could write-out some exposition for my spirit, but my understanding was we did not control them completely. I prefer it a bit that way, though I felt it appropriate to provide an exposition and voice for mine. If you would like to step-in for it with Gruskorb here, that might be a convenient time. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and solidify some more of its past.

To understand Jolnar, you need to look at the larger relationship between the Ealintaine and their worshippers. The Ealintaine's ethereal power is in direct correlation with the number of followers and the strength of their conviction to that deity. Conversely, the more powerful the deity a society worships, the more strength and influence that society can wield. That isn't to say that the deity doesn't need to act on its own behalf to gain influence or power in Talmor or Midian, just that they can wield more powerful magic with more worshippers. Similarly, a society must still act to expand its political, economic or military strength, but the more powerful its deity, the more power it can throw at its enemies.

So, who is Jolnar? He is the god of war, of strength and of unshakeable resolve. He resides in Midian (due to his chaotic nature), but is more aligned with the gods of Talmor. Why? He enjoys battle and respects & covets power. He greatly desires to reign supreme over the world, and he encourages his followers to expand their territory and his influence. However, as a military leader, he knows that he must be able to trust his allies. He must form strong bonds with other Ealintaine in order to protect himself from being 'flanked' by an enemy. The gods of Midian cannot be trusted, and he knows this. Therefore, he has closely aligned himself with Calwein, the most powerful god in Talmor. He is loyal to Calwein because he knows that Calwein will be loyal and not abandon Jolnar as long as he continues to prove himself an ally.

Why is Jolnar Chaotic Neutral? I don't think of alignment in absolutes. I think of it as a 4 quadrant graph. Good v. Evil on the vertical axis, and Lawful v. Chaotic on the horizontal axis. As you approach either axis, you enter a neutral stage. Jolnar is certainly not evil. While he is neutral on this continuum, he leans towards the good side... but not enough to be considered benevolent. Next, while Jolnar demands order and structure of his worshippers, he is very much about self-preservation. He would break from an agreement if it suited his purpose. So, I would call him chaotic, but he is nearly neutral. So, with out much of a stretch, Jolnar could almost fall into Neutral Good (which is where many of his followers reside) or Chaotic Good... or even True Neutral.

Why are these dwarves worshipping Jolnar? They are caught in the position of the protectors of Talanor from invasion from the east. Originally, they had no loyalty to Talanor other than the gold they would have been given in compensation. Now, however, the element of Tradition... and protecting a home they have held for several generations... makes them steadfast in their defense of Talanor and their home. They are relatively poor compared to the riches found in the homes of their cousins in the Iron Mountains. But, they are very proud of their military prowess and dedication. Simply put, they are mercenaries that have been in the employ of Talanor for so long, they are loyal through tradition... but still have that desire for wealth. Therefore, Jolnar, as the god of war, fits their purpose best. They are not constrained by the lawful virtues of Niomachus nor the benevolence of Calwein. Besides, they enjoy making war and and find honor in a warrior's death.

Hope this explains a little more about Jolnar and the dwarves of the Eastgate.

I have some plot-hooks thought out for each of the bonded souls. Some of which have begun to reveal themselves, others will when appropriate.

I've been relying on the players to show me their soul's personality, then interjecting any comments or knowledge the soul may have given the situation or opportunities to tie in the plot hooks. If you want to write any of the soul's past, feel free and I will adapt the story appropriately. If I have a specific fact or detail that I want in the story, I'll either start injecting it into the campaign or let you know here or via PM that I reserve that 'unknown fact/issue' for the plot.

I'd like to think of this campaign as a real joint effort among all of us. I've already been surprised and excited by a few twists that you guys have written. They were twists or ideas that I hadn't considered but have been great and really inspired me. To be frank, I had the campaign setting written and the basic plot (the world is on the verge of destruction and the party must help Alaquendai save it... or not). I knew the first step was going to be sending you after Sivantanpisil. But how you're gonna get there... what happens when you do get there... and how do you save the world... are all questions to which I don't have an answer at this time. Part of the fun for me is watching you write it with me.

For example, I hadn't written anything about the fire goblins until Mathazir posted THIS. So, I came up with something for the group to do to help the dwarves. That encounter has now opened up a plot hook for Niyut's character and will greatly affect the rest of your journey through the Eastgate! All because of one of your posts.

I, for one, can't wait to see where this goes next.

Thanks! That's very helpful, and really helps solidify why Niyut finds the greatest of the spirits (the gods) so untrustworthy. A) They have the most ability to change the world and B) the most desire to exercise that ability. At the moment, she definitely prefers bargains that have clear cut results.

With your take on Alignment (which seems fine to me), does that many cleric, warpriests, etc. are not bound by the two-step alignment rule?

On a tangent, the "evil always betrays" trope is giving me strong old-school DragonLance vibes. :-)

Bright Tower Maps | Last Haven Table #1 Maps | Last Haven Table #2 Maps

I would probably be a little flexible on alignment requirements for most classes, especially when it comes to relating to their deity. To me, alignment describes where a character's morality/ethics stand at the inception of the story. Then their actions throughout the campaign reveals the current status of their alignment. More important than alignment, any of the gods would reward actions that furthered their ideals or goals and punish actions that were opposed. If a lawful good cleric invoked Jolnar's blessing on a legion of warriors before a battle, he would grant such a spell even though the cleric is no where near his alignment. However, if a chaotic neutral cleric prayed for sanctuary so that he may flee from battle, that spell might not go off as planned!

Valjoen, I just had a heck of an idea here. I mean, it's a doozy. I'd need Gruskorb to go in on it with me, so actually pulling it off would require his agreement, but here it is.

Well, a few interesting things have happened this week. The publisher, that originally represented the game/fantasy setting that my co-author and I wrote back in the early 1990's and sold at GenCon back then, has agreed to publish a novella that my co-author wrote 20 years ago that takes place in Malta, our fantasy setting. Very excited for him, but who knows if it will get widely distributed. It is a very small publisher.

Also, I've been given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for a potential book from another publisher. So, I'm toying with the idea of using the newly made spiral, shard world as the setting. The story will take place a couple of centuries following the events we are currently playing. The catch is that I cannot use any material from the old fantasy setting due to copyrights.

Luckily, the "Talanor" setting with the re-shaped world is entirely new. As a matter of fact, while Alaquendai is quite prominent in the old material, where he lives was never named nor described, and he was only discussed in passing and in lore. Eastgate is an entirely new place as are all the characters there. But, I would have to 1) rename Alaquendai and Arrington; 2) remake and rename the pantheon of gods; and 3) rewrite the history prior to the Shaping. I would have to reinvent #2 & #3 regardless of whether I use Talanor.

To keep things organized in my mind, I'm thinking I'll implement some of the changed names and history into our campaign setting. Of course, I've been given the 'ok' to play RPG's in the old setting as much as I want, but it makes sense to me to use the new names when possible, especially in cases where I've only mentioned something briefly or not at all. So, where I make any changes, I'll try to note it in out of character text to avoid confusing you.

So, my question for all of you is: do you want me to keep the names/history of the things that are significant to the storyline or is everyone ok with changing a few things? We are so early in the campaign that I could easily change the names, but I don't want to cause any confusion.

The main things that would change are:

NPC's: Alaquendai & Arrington.
Deities: Jolnar, Archeabus, Halcyon, Calwein, Quarraine and a few others that were named in passing.
Places: Detroyet, Iron Mountains, Ixthian Empire, Kingdom of Avenell, etc. Most of this stuff is just in your backgrounds not in the storyline yet.
Sub-races of Elves and Hobgoblins. The races wouldn't change just the sub-races. In the old setting, Gruskorb would have been a "Argean Goblyn". Since the goblins in Pathfinder are so different than what we imagined the Goblyns to be, I already changed them to hobgolins.

The main reason I'm asking these questions is to keep things separated and organized for me. I'm totally happy to keep the old content in our campaign if all of you prefer. I just thought that as I write new content, I could use it here.

Most likely none of this will make a bit of difference as the odds of getting anything published is next to nothing, but it's fun to think about.

Preferences?

First off, congrats! Sounds like a great opportunity, and I hope it works out.

As for changing up names to fall in line with the new background, I don't have a problem with it myself, as long as the changes are clearly noted. But it would feel a little jarring, having committed the important names to memory, and finding them changed.

I don't mind you changing the names in the slightest if it helps you with the world building. I am really enjoying your story-telling, but I had already edited names like "Fooballia" and "Detroyet" out of my mind for suspension-of-disbelief purposes. I find pun names to be very distracting.

One thing that would really help me (and may help you figure out the new gods) would be getting excerpts of the book that Niyut has. I am thinking that if this works for you that before Niyut rests in the future she read about one of the gods. This would help me getting setting information my character is desperate to have without it being a massive info dump with would be daunting for is us both. Would that work for you? Is that something you would be interested in?

Thanks for the congrats, but getting asked to submit something is much less of a deal then getting something in print. Still, it will be fun writing it.

@Niyut - My first inclination was alphabetical, a very organized and systematic approach. But the more I think about it, they will be organized by power & influence at the time the book was written several hundred years ago. I'll start with Calwein or his equivalent when I rework the pantheon. I'll post an excerpt and link it to the obsidian portal website.

Character sheet updated. Somewhere along the lines, I believe I wrote down 1 level in each of the 3/4 BAB classes as 1 BAB altogether, so I am updating the sheet to BAB +2. I'm not certain if this is correct, though it does make sense to pool that progression. At this point, it makes no difference for feats/rogue talents.

Did you remember to figure in the divine boon to your saves, Gruskorb?

I'm really not sure what Morgrym hopes for Truk'tosh to accomplish.

It's not sure if he is your ally in this.

Morgrym's storyline is fairly complex. There are several facts and details that haven't come to light yet but will as the overall plot moves along. At this point, he left Eastgate on bad terms with his father; he's been away for 50+ years and now he finds his father has perished from the same ordeal that left him a spirits trapped in a half-Orc. I'd say the the week has started off poorly, and he's in a bad mood. He'll be helpful if called upon but he's upset and confused.

Sheesh, makes me glad that Garidan is only sharing, sort of, headspace with his sister :p.

Character sheet updated. Somewhere along the lines, I believe I wrote down 1 level in each of the 3/4 BAB classes as 1 BAB altogether, so I am updating the sheet to BAB +2. I believe that is +1 BAB for Rogue 2 and +0 BAB for Druid 1 for a total BAB of +1. That is the way the Herolab is calculating it for me when I made a sample character with your class levels.

Just checking in here. I haven't poofed out or anything of that sort :D. Just to reiterate, Garidan--having accomplished at least some of what he wanted here in Eastgate--is copping some much-needed rest until it's time to go.

Further, being the only non-caster, he recognizes that he'll doing a lot of watches while the rest sleep to regain spells, so he's storing up ;p.

In the meantime, liking what I'm reading of the assorted story bits here, and even came up with an interesting (hopefully) contribution to Niyut's and Gruskorb's discussion on unwanted spiritual residents. Just have to figure out how to bring it up, since Garidan is out like a snuffed candle during the discussion in question.

I'm excited to see what happens on our next leg.

I believe Gruskorb is in the same boat. Or cot as it were.

Maybe it's just me but there are several entries on the wiki that I cannot see.

I've been working on it lately, moving things around. If there is a particular page, you'd like to see, let me know.

I've semi-vetted these names changes with google. If you see anything that seems reminiscent of anything, please let me know. Thanks.
