Yeah, that's confusing! Distracted vs Nauseated I mean!
With Nauseated, she could still do a move action though, right? so she could climb onboard.
You guys can effectively be out of combat if you want, since you are moving. You can easily swing around and come back. It will take time, but that boat probably isn't going anywhere.
Chaenath Woodsea |
Sure, up to you how much she could move in a single move action, but the swarm is going to keep chowing down on her regardless. I'll be honest. I really have no idea how Chaenath will react to Alessandra's death, and I don't think her player is on the boards anymore.
Chaenath Woodsea |
Well I'll roll Swarm damage at the least. I don't think the swarm would have much trouble following the warm food it was chowing down on that passed through it.
swarm damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Fort Save DC13 or distracted. Separate Fort Save DC13 or 1 Dex damage
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
Should we exit the initiative? I'd say we want to follow the boat back to base (or capture the caster, and some questions). Also, we should recruit a new player or two
Grymp |
Ok, out of initiative it is!
Your ship moves off a ways. Your crew is roughly none the worse for wear, and Sandara can heal the injuries with a channel or two with folks grouped up.
The breakers ship is slowly sinking, but you don't see any of them on it, so it's unlikely you'll get a chance to follow them anywhere.
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
"I s'pose we could check their boat before she sinks. P'haps they left sum clues there."
If his teammates agree with the plan, Rogar offers the use of his hat-boat to close up on the wrecker boat.
Chaenath Woodsea |
Chaenath nods. I will come with you! I will detect magic as we go.
Okay to assume that Chaenath's swarm keeps chowing down on the caster for the entirety of their summon?
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
Speaking the command word, Rogar transforms his Besmara's tricorne into a jolly boat, and starts rowing the party closer to the enemy ship. All the time, he keeps his eyes on the sinking ship, scanning for any live enemies, invisible or not.
Grymp |
Sandara and G'lub as well I presume.
Once you get within range (60'), Chaenath discerns a magic aura near the boat. She takes the appropriate amount of time to discern auras and such...
It is definitely transmutation magic...
Chaenath Woodsea |
Spellcraft or Arcana? Spellcraft is an auto recognize.
Kn:Arcana: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Recognizing the spell Chaenath uses her second dispel magic of the day to get rid of it.
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
"Hmph. Stupid magic tricks. Cannae ye try t' dismiss it again? No? Then how we're not gonna let th' bastard escape?"
Rogar scratches his beard and looks into the air where the magic is happening according to Chaenath. "How long they can hide in there? Can we wait them out? Set a trap when they come out?"
If I remember rope trick correctly, it's a long time they'll be in there. Hmm, sink the boat and lure some sharks below? (Of course then the caster just flies off... Darn, this would be an excellent usage for explosive runes or symbols :P
Chaenath Woodsea |
Sure I think we should search the ship and then let it sink for starters, then we can wait them out maybe or... no reason why we can't climb the rope ourselves and go in spells and bombs blazing?
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
ah, right... I think in 2e version you could pull the rope with you into the dimensional space, so I was thinking there was no rope here. Sure, we can go up... Who wants to go first? :)
Chaenath Woodsea |
Actually Doc, you have Vomit Swarm too right? Why don't you just vomit a swarm and send it up the portal? They don't seem like they're all that well prepared to deal with them. Waiting 8 or 9 hours isn't a big deal until the trick ends either. Let's start with looting the ship and then sending up a swarm.
Grymp |
Right, Rope Trick is hours, but who knows how long it has been going? Chaenath did dispel the Overland Flight she had going. Who knows what else she has up her sleeve. The boat will sink in the fairly near future. It's unlikely the Rope Trick will make it all the way until tomorrow, when she can learn spells again.
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
No Vomit Swarm prepped, I'm afraid... I'm not sure if those could be sent up the rope, either. (Then again, why not..) So, wait for the spell to end, or charge in?
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
"Order's, eh!? Wait here, an' see if I be comin' back from up there. If not, hoard all th' booze an' drink yerselves silly. If I come back alive, then I'll think th' long-term plans."
Then Rogar orders Spleen to shrink back to normal size and hop on his shoulder. He drinks an extract to fortify himself, and grabs the rope that ought to lead to the spellcasting half-orc.
"All rite, let's go have a chat wi' th' bastard who killed 'lessandra! Chanath, G'lub, an' Sandara, follow me!"
And then he starts climbing the rope.
Rogar prepares and drink a new Shield, if the old one is over already. Then Alchemical allocation + Heroism
Grymp |
It's a bit anticlimactic, I'll admit, but up inside you find one dead wrecker, and a nearly dead Half Orc illusionist!
The continued damage did them in!
Vakarla had:
potion of cure moderate wounds, scroll of invisibility, scroll of knock, scroll of wall of force, scroll of water breathing, wand of shield (20 charges); Other Gear masterwork falchion, masterwork light crossbow with 10 bolts, cloak of resistance +2, rope of climbing, bicorne hat, periscope, watertight engraved bronze scroll case (worth 75 gp), spell component pouch, spyglass.
After waking her, she is more than willing to let you know where her base is, as long as she has assurances that she will be allowed to go free with at least her spellbook, some cash, and rations.
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
"Chanath, ye have some magic t' make 'er talk? She killed Alessandra, and should pay for that!"
Chaenath Woodsea |
What, Alessandra is dead?
Chaenath grows angry and hits the Vakarla with Evil Eye, Misfortune and Cackle then she says
I will torture you for that unless you tell us where your base is!
Chaenath Woodsea |
Assurance? Chaenath says as she beings summoning something I assure you if you do not speak very quickly I will finish summoning and whatever comes out will kill you.
Chaenath Woodsea |
I'll lay claim on all the magic stuff... honestly it's been so long since all this started that I don't have any idea what to do next. Maybe a swimming expedition to the ships that were wrecked? Are there any other clues as to where their base would be?
Grymp |
Unfortunately, no, but of the wrecks here, one is clearly the Lady's Sting which answers the question of the quest you were sent out on.
In the boat you are in, Vakarla's chest can be found, inside it, she has...
mithral dagger set with aquamarine gemstones worth 900gp
a Shackles Ensign
320 gp in mixed coins
a golden statue of a wasp wrapped in oilcloth and stuffed in an empty barrel— the Golden Vespal, stolen from the Lady’s Sting.
Vakarla's spellbook: all cantrips, knock, wall of force, and water breathing as well as:
5th—mirage arcana (DC 20), overland flight
4th—fear (DC 18), hallucinatory terrain (DC 19), phantasmal
killer (DC 19), wall of fire
3rd—haste, invisibility sphere, major image (DC 18), stinking
cloud (DC 17), vampiric touch
2nd—false life, fog cloud, invisibility, mirror image, rope trick,
scorching ray
1st—burning hands (DC 15), color spray (DC 16), grease, mage
armor, magic missile, ray of enfeeblement (DC 15)
0 (at will)—acid splash, detect magic, ghost sound (DC 15),
open/close
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
I think this is what we were after:
Dindreann tells you about a ship owned by the temple, the Lady’s Sting, recently went missing. Divinations have revealed that the ship was attacked by a group of pirates who deliberately lure ships into danger so that they can salvage the cargoes of the resulting wrecked ships. Piracy is a fact of life in the Shackles, of course, but the Lady’s Sting was carrying a relic sacred to the faith—a gold-plated wasp statue known as the Golden Vespal. The temple seeks revenge on these wreckers who would dare attack one the faith’s holy vessels, as well as the return of the Golden Vespal, but they have so far been unable to locate the wreckers that attacked the Lady’s Sting. If you can
find the wreckers, enact the goddess’s revenge upon them, and recover the Golden Vespal, Dindreann will give you a lead on the spies you are
So, vengeance enacted. But I think we're missing the vespal. I wonder if they would accept a half-completed job.. Or perhaps we can look around if we find the base.
Chaenath Woodsea |
I think we found it, in the chest. GM mentioned a golden statue of a wasp wrapped in oilcloth and stuffed in an empty barrel— the Golden Vespal, stolen from the Lady’s Sting.
Can I add the spellbook spells to Chaenath GM?
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
D'oh! Reading comprehension, Rogar, reading comprehension...
So we're good here. Let's head back and report to the Calistrians. (I think we'll also need to do some recruiting...)
Rogar "Doc" Ironsail |
Can Rogar take a look at the spellbook, before Chaenath feed it to her pet? :P
