I do believe it is! Looks good to me.

I have an idea for a Loki Scion, but I'm wondering about the virtues, since I can't imagine Loyalty, Courage or Endurance being virtues that Loki values in his scions. Also, for Thrown weapons - can they go of Perception like Firearms, or do they have to be Strength-based.

Backstory
Abandoned on the steps of the Child Haven Orphanage on Oakley st. Las Vegas, and a serial runaway, Lex (short for Felix) grew up primarily on the streets of Sin City. Born with a preternatural knack for legerdemain and sleight of hand, by the time he was sixteen, Lex had graduated from petty thief and pickpocket to apprentice magician, abandoned the orphanage for good and moved in with his mentor. Less than two years later, he had moved into his own place, and got a job as the front room entertainment in the Smoky Eyes Bordello. Between living on the streets, drifting around the edges of the Vegas criminal underground, auditing classes at Nevada college and working in a bordello, Lex has picked up an eclectic variety of skills.

Appearance
Lex is tall and slender with curly, dark red hair; large, slanted green eyes, pale skin and androgynous features that are somewhere between exotic and unnerving. He spent most of his formative years poor and bouncing between all of the glittering variety of the Vegas nightlife and it shows - Lex dresses like a combination of drag queen and biker, wrapped up in a "lucky" coat - dark green leather lined with kevlar, because any self-respecting alumn of the City of Lights knows that the only luck you can trust is the luck you make.

Personality
Lex is completely confident, smarter than most people and unapologetic about both these facts. Because of this, he has always been a loner, but more by circumstance than preference - he often used to daydream about his birth parents coming to find him, and accepting him unconditionally (although to be fair, every orphan does that). Although his experiences have left him jaded and cynical about a lot of things, Lex is more 'mischief' than 'evil', and deeply unwilling to appear vulnerable. They have also given him a knack for manipulating people, but when it comes to honest interaction, he is far less adept.
When he receives his visitation, he will probably see it as having stumbled onto a family of sorts, and try to connect with both his father and the other Aesir Scions, and he will probably also do an abysmal job at communicating that fact.

My character traded an eye for the gift of wisdom (mystery).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I've my finished backstory, I will hopefully have the stats finished later today.

Spoiler:
Appearance:
Normally, Chase looks like a handsome young man of seventeen years. His hair is blonde and wavy, and he wears it long though he usually ties it behind his head in a ponytail. His eyes are pale blue and his features are very soft even for his age, despite his ever present tan. He is about 5’10’’ and rather lean and wiry, though he is doing his best to gain muscle.

When he switches to his more hideous form, Chase is still recognizably himself--at least, he is himself if he had drown. His skin takes on a slightly bluish sheen with great swatches of red and purple snaking their way up and down his extremities. His eyes milk over and his lips and eyelids turn bruise violet, and his hair seems to take on a life of its own as if he is partially suspended in water.

Personality:
Chase is rather shy and standoffish--his home life has caused him to adopt a starting stance of general dishonesty with most people he meets. When left to his own devices Chase’s thoughts tend to wander and he finds himself daydreaming--it can take a lot to get him back to reality, whatever that may be. Chase is rather blase about danger--he and his friends from school all had a reputation for egging each other on into doing stupider and stupider stunts, of which Chase was the most accomplished.

Backstory:
Chase’s mortal father was an Australian sailor and volunteer in the Coastal Patrol. Before Chase was born, while responding to an emergency call, he disappeared. His ship and its crew returned with the men that he had helped rescued and it was reported that he had been lost at sea.

In truth, Chase’s father had drowned at sea attempting during the rescue--but he had caught the eye of Ran, the giantess goddess of the ocean. She allowed him to spend a night in her chambers before dutifully giving his soul to the valkyrie that sought to claim him because of his heroic act. Her child by the union was Chase, who Ran left at an Adoption Services office in Brisbane. He was dutifully adopted by a religious family, the O’Bannons, who took him to their home in a small suburb of Brisbane. They decided not to tell Chase that he was adopted, judging that it would be best if he thought they were his real parents.

Though they never physically hurt him, Chase’s adopted family was intensely emotionally abusive. They were both devout Christians and as Chase grew his interests increasingly bothered them--he was more interested in drawing and daydreaming than religion and sports. The only hobby that he had that his parents tolerated was his surfing--though only barely, as his father felt that it was the sport of layabouts and good-for-nothings. Chase could spend the whole day on the water though, and as he grew older he did so more and more, increasingly cutting class to do so, which would send his parents into a rage. Eventually, his father forbid him from going to the beach, and insisted that Chase spend his afternoons at his auto repair shop. Chase did his best to get out of having to do this whenever he could--he had a knack for disappearing whenever he needed to, as it turned out.

And that was not the end of Chase’s home troubles. As he grew older he started to realize that he was gay--but he was smart enough to know not to tell his parents, since his father often complained of homosexuals ruining the country. His parents suspected that it was a possibility, however, and often warned him of the dangers--and when they found some of the drawings in his sketchbook they ransacked his ruin and forbid him from buying anymore paper--a rule he did his best to circumvent whenever possible, of course.

His whole life, Chase has been haunted by dreams--of beautiful women beneath the waves, of monsters made of fire and hatred, of ghostly hands smothering him in his bed--and as he got older these dreams seemed to start leaking into real life. His music teacher had blue skin and left a trail of water wherever she walked that no one seemed to notice. Little creatures made of mud were living under his neighbor’s garden. And the graveyard he walked by on the way home from school was increasingly populated with ghosts that he did his absolute best to ignore despite their best efforts to get his attention. The only time that he told anyone was once, when he told a boy who he thought was his friend. The boy told his parents, who told Chase’s parents--they nearly sent him to a psychiatric hospital until he was able to convince them that it had all been a lie, which still earned him a verbal thrashing that left him emotionally devastated.

But Chase’s greatest dream has been to escape. To escape his parents, to get as far away from them as he possibly could. He dreamed of going to the States and becoming a movie star--they seemed to love their Australians in Hollywood and in California he was sure he’d never meet someone who hated him for being gay ever again. As his eighteenth birthday approaches, Chase is almost ready to put his into action. He’s saved up a bit of money and has looked into contacts that could him to the States with relative ease--he’s ready to go, and trying his best to ignore the fact that his dreams continue to grow stronger every night.

As a scion of Odin with those skills I'd personally go with a preacher who is also like a doomsday prepper.

Also, for naming things I think this website is pretty handy.

Thank you. Suggested nature?

Well that depends on what you want their personality to be like. You could make a case for any of them.

As a preacher Caregiver, Fanatic, Pacifist, Pedagogue, and Visionary are all pretty obvious.

As a doomsday prepper Competitive, Libertine, Rebel, Survivor and Traditionalist would make sense.

Of course if you play a preacher you would have to decide a few things. What religion is it? Unless it happens to be a small sect of people who actually worship the Norse Gods how does your character feel about their old religion now? Does Odin being real shatter those beliefs? How do they feel about that?

If they don't handle it well Cynic could be a good choice.

Here is my submission.

Vasily Sokolov, Scion of Uller. The Worlds Greatest Sniper.

Note - I have a Relic that definitely requires GM input as to whether it is acceptable or not.

A game of Scion! I've never had a group to play, but these books changed the way I RP, they hold a special place in my heart. I just can't pass this up!

I have in mind a Scion of Hermod (God of couriers and former scion of Odin.) But unless I've missed it in the books there is no official rules for him. Would you be happy for me to house rule something?

I like the courier aspect and the story of him travelling to hel to bargain for baldr's soul/life.

Added a bit about Erika's appearance and personality.

I have intentionally not picked a home city for her, so that I can link her background to other characters'. From the current applications, rungok's Ulf Jonnson and eggellis's Nick Thornton would make the most sense.

@Radavel- in the writeup, Odin losing his eye allow him to channel several purviews. Narratively, he gave up his eye for knowledge, so he channels things like Magic, Mystery, Prophecy and I think one other thing through it.

However, as I said earlier...this has already been done. Odin gave up his eye for knowledge. Fate isn't interested in you doing the same thing. If you're going to lose an eye, I'm going to say it won't allow you to channel any Knowledge-related Purviews unless you can really dazzle me with story reasons for it, and you still need to have lost that eye in some fashion related to the Purviews you will be channeling. I'll cap the Purviews you can channel through Maiming or Loss to 3.

@Ratpigeon- Remember that those Virtues are valued by the Aesir as a whole, not necessarily by Loki. Despite him being a parent of yours, you could quite easily be brave and steadfast, if only to prove to your Band and other Aesir that you are *not* like him. I'm also fine with Epic Perception adding to Thrown damage instead of Epic Strength; the two won't stack, though. If you throw it hard enough, it doesn't matter how well you place it, and vice versa.

@Louxman- Hermod is actually given a bit of a writeup as a mortal growing into a God in the Ragnarok book. I'll extrapolate from that;
Associated Powers: Epic Dexterity, Epic Stamina, Epic Wits, Jotunblut, Pyschopomp, Sky
Associated Abilities: Athletics, Awareness, Empathy, Fortitude, Larceny, Presence

Damn. I had an idea for a way to fit in all those skills but it was after the visitation

What time is this set in?

Modern day.

He joined the army at the age of 18. After his first couple of battles he was promoted to lieutenant. Soon after he got seriously injured. He moved out of england to (where eggellis’s character lives) as to be near the near-world famous doctor.

Medicine isn't in Hel's portfolio so it costs 2 bonus points, I think. If I'm wrong I'll gladly spend another point.

I didn't mention anything about Nick's visitation. Should I? I figured we would play the whole thing out

I'm up for linking backstories, if you have a reason to know a dude from Memphis.

Just to keep a toe in, I'm working on (as previously noted) a scion of Ullr who was an amazing biathlon competitor, but an untimely event ended that career before it could flourish. Now probably a resident of Lenzerhide, Switzerland or Reno, NV, depending on what the campaign requires.

As far as linking with your scion, @eggellis, if you're a doctor then perhaps I wound up crossing paths with you while looking for treatment for a sports injury.

@Jesse- Either can work just fine, but Reno, NV will be closer geographically to where the campaign will begin. From a ST aspect, though, I have no preference.

@DM Ragnarok

Any comments on the Relic in my submission above?

Oh, I thought I did! Think the forum ate my post; let me check and see if I saved it.

It looks like it did not, but what you want would be a 3-dot Relic; 1 for unlimited ammunition, 2 to do what you want it to do without costing Legend.

It could be a 2-point Relic if you wanted to spend a point of Legend every time you transform the weapons.

How much would an ability on a weapon that made it return every time you dropped it/it got stolen would cost?

If you wanted to make a weapon that returned to your hand after throwing it, that would cost 1 Dot.

If you want an item that magically returns to you from wherever it is, that would be 2 Dots.

My house has been having router issues for a few days, so I haven’t been able to do much reading, I may not get anything done in time. Don’t wait up for me, but hopefully we can get this resolved soon.

Cost to have a weapon polymorph into something mundane?

I don't want to overextend myself here, but given the quantity and quality of these submissions I may run two tables. I'm not saying I WILL...but I might.

@Ouachitonian- I have connectivity issues fairly often; I feel your pain! As a work around, assuming you have a smartphone and the Dropbox app, you can always just connect through your LTE service (not wifi) and pop open the PDF on your phone. Not ideal but I've done that more than once.

@ADM- 1 Dot.

Also a reminder that Wednesday is the cutoff.

Keep in mind that while my character is a doctor he wouldn't have done much actual healing for a good while. He's a medical examiner, which is the same thing as a coroner. Some states in the U.S. have coroner's, other's call them medical examiners.

He would have done a residency 10ish years ago though, so it is possible to have met him in a hospital.

Urgulstad the strong sighs “yet another near death situation” he quietly murmurs to himself. This time he was hanging from a cliff by his fingernails. Looking down he sees a tiny outcrop in the mountain, not enough to stand on but just enough for what he needed to do. Urgulstad drops his hold on the cliff edge and slides down, slamming his foot onto the outcrop and leaping in the air just as it (the outcrop) crumbles to nothingness. He lands perfectly on the cliff top.

Possibly a 1-die stunt (like it matters). It shows that most (if not all) problems can be solved by having high epic attributes

No one said you couldn’t. But is is modern day so if you’re just, you know, going to the store that would be extremely peculiar. But you could certainly transport it in the trunk of your car.

There aren’t really rules for one or two handed weapons. You don’t deal more damage for wielding a weapon in two hands

I would certainly have problems flying. (I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to carry an axe on a plane). This is the US, though.

DM Ragnarok wrote:

I wasn’t worried about damage, it was more whether I could use a shield at the same time. I will go with whatever looks cooler in the spur of the moment. :)

I will say that in scion (unlike pathfinder) you don’t have to worry that you will be less usefull because you took a Ability because it makes you look cool. In scion you level up by looking cool.

Which is why I strongly suggest for anyone with epic strength to take the make the making it look easy knack

Making it look easy (strength knack)
:

When a character performs a feat of strength, doing so takes every bit of effort the character can muster. He doesn't just lift a blue whale by the tail and hammer throw it back into the ocean between bites of scone. He grunts and strains and struggles until he gets enough momentum behind the whale for it to leave the ground, and when he lets it go, it's with are sounding shout of strain and a near collapse of relief as it sails out over the water. The name of this Knack, however, speaks for itself. Any action the character can perform as a feat of strength, he can perform as if it's no effort at all. He can lift the heaviest weights with one hand while using his other hand to cover a yawn. He can throw a spear into orbit with a flick of his finger. He can scoop the beached whale up in one hand and send it skipping like a stone out into the deep water where it can move freely (if dizzily) once again. Since such feats of strength are so easy, the character can execute multiple actions while performing feats of strength.

Depends on the armor in question. Bulletproof vest could look fairly normal for no cost; chain mail or lamellar or the like? 1 dot.

Also relic equipment can have a 1 dot power that lets it turn into an innocuous item.

I guess what I was really wondering was if the Boons come predominantly from Parent or Pantheon. My image of Lex is one that takes after Loki on the Trickster front, eventually becoming a god of transformation and illusion, focusing on Expression and maybe a little of Loyalty, but prioritising a clever approach over a brave one. If Loki grants my boons, I can't imagine him having a problem with that, but if it's the legend of the pantheon as a whole that does it, then I could see getting the xp penalty.

Loki would definitely be in favor of that. Narratively that works fine

I'll get a character created tonight, and an alias if I get selected.

Welcome back! Can't wait to see what you put together!

Same goes to you, Vrog!

So would you let me swap Courage for Intellect without incurring the XP penalty on my favoured boons from Loki then (maybe take a penalty on Jotunblut or something though)?

Ah. Apologies, Ratpigeon, I misunderstood, what your original question had been.

No, any swapping of Virtues will incur the usual penalties. Whether your Purview flows from God or Pantheon, all members of the Aesir, Loki included, sill value the Aesir virtues.

An updated version. Also, can we stat up some throwing knives (because that it the weapon a Stage Magician is most likely to be proficient in)? I'd hope for something like a Wakizashi (which is the only dagger weapon), but with a small range increment on it, if that's okay.

Here is a rough background for my character.

Rayna Barnes:

Rayna runs a wolf preserve that she inherited from her father located in Rural Pennsylvania. Growing up, she never knew her mom, but she knew the story of how her parents met: Her mother got left by her "friends" after they convinced her to jump the fence at his father's wolf preserve. When some wolves arrived, her friends left her to die, but her father saved her by standing between the young woman and the wolves and using his rifle to scare them off. She stayed with her father for a while, then left to make her way to New York to be a model, but not before leaving her father with a daughter, Rayna.

Not really prepared to be a father, Rayna's father raised her like his father had raised him: to live off the land, hunt and shoot, and how to care for wolves. When she was little, she went missing in the preserve, but was found days later in one of the wolf dens, where the animals were caring for her. When her father approached, the wolves exited the den, snarling, but they parted and Rayna walked past them before turning and bowing to the Alpha male and thanking him for his hospitality. "It was the darnedest thing" her father would say every time he told the story "She came walking out like she was the alpha, and all the wolves seemed to understand her when she spoke."

Rayna eventually graduated high school and went to college, studying veterinary medicine, with a plan to return to the preserve and work there. Her father died, however, during her junior year, which prompted her to return home to run the preserve. That was two years ago, and she still had never met her mother, although one night she dreamt of two women, older yet beautiful, striking a bargain. "'You may take my son, since you adore him so, but I get one of yours in his place.' 'Agreed. You may take her.'" That same night Rayna became seriously ill, contracting a fever that lasted several days before it finally broke, and afterwards even her older friends among the people that worked at the preserve noted a difference in her demeanor, although none of them could really place it, other than a feeling of 'intensity.' That was several weeks ago, and Rayna made a marked recovery.

Appearance: Rayna is a tall, lithe, attractive young woman in her early 20's who is much tougher than she appears to be. She stands just shy of 6 feet tall, and weighs 140 lbs, with shock red hair that hangs just below her shoulders and rich green eyes with hints of gold in them.

In college, she was well known for her ability to drink anyone under the table, and between her charm, pretty face and relatable personality, she has always had at least one or two young men trying to win her hand, but for her part she is not at all interested in settling down.

Personality: Rayna is a practical young woman who is passionate about protecting and preserving all animals, but she has a special affinity with wolves.

Rayna's birth mother was Aphrodite, but Freya and Aphrodite made an agreement to switch children for some unknown reason.
