Caine starts to smile the smile of a supremely happy man. "Bad odds, no light and a known ambush."
Happy humming emerges as he busies himself getting the battle standard out of his backpack.
"Clobbering time."
Sounds like a plan is forming. Send Brujo and Leo in first, followed by Caine. Let them start sucking up the creeper attacks and become the focus of attention, ideally a couple of squares in from the door. Fairwind does her mobile melee unit thing and moves to flank and pick off. Cronin stays back and zaps. Snaggy and Mirth sneak around the edges and head straight for the trap. Sound OK to you all?
Rev DM |
Don't where Brujo is ... Laz, chime back in when you can.
Let's try this for a marching order and tell me if you object:-
Fairwind
Leo
Caine
Brujo
Cronin
Mirth
Snaggletooth
Stealth check from Fairwind please to see if you get a surprise round. And roll init please.
The map shows what Mirth's serpent knows. She is predicting about six creepers in total, but isn't certain, nor does she know positively where they are other than the two by the door. The yellow square is the trap that is causing eldritch darkness to shroud the room.
Note that it is dark and all attacks are made at -5 until Mirth and Snaggle undo the trap.

"On the plus side there's no way they're going to be expecting us to be dumb enough to charge in anyway... right?" Leo sighs shaking his head.
Yep sounds about right!

Stupid post monster... trying again.
Snaggle, you're up first. Mirth may be delaying and you might want to as well.

At the monastery
Palagro is silent during the journey back to the monastery and vanishes to the common room while Perigia says her farewells to Leo and Brujo. When she rejoins him, he is white-faced but much more under control.
"Sorry about that. It freaked me out completely seeing you here ... this job with Thoran just seemed like an easy way to earn some money. I never thought about the implications. Then I saw you and I knew right away why you were here. It had to be Fiamella. I'm right aren't I. You want to know what happened to her after the slavers took her, don't you?"
Perigia |
Rev DM |
OK. Just need Snaggle and Leo to let me know their preferences and y'all can go kick creeper butt in the dark.
Monastery
Palagro eyes Perigia uneasily. "Yeah. Yeah. I can see things have changed with you. Erm. Just don't turn me into a frog if you don't like what you hear, OK?
He moves a bit further away from her.
"Fiamella's went kind of scary after you left. The other kids were pretty frightened of you - you knew that right? But she really made their skin crawl. Eyes going crazy, flying when she lost her temper, busting out with thunder, half-killing your dad ..." he looks at her and holds out his hands ...
"I'm telling you the truth here. She went from quiet little book kid to crazy nutbar just about overnight ... I guess this isn't what you wanted to hear is it?" he adds, with some sympathy.

At the monastery
Palagro swallows a bit. "I don't want to say anything bad about Fia, but she was plain, freaky-scary. And I don't know why. You know what Waterdeep's like Perigia. I know you haven't lived there in a long time, but you'll remember. There were stories going all over. Fia made a pact with something, Fia walked under an earthmote, Fia this, Fia that. One of them could be true, but I don't know.
I know she was a windsoul when the Thayans took her and when she ran into the Spellplague. When she came out - Perigia, I'm not sure what came out. She went to Thay. But they fairly worshipped her. It was just outside town ... " He stops, clearly reliving some really horrible memories.
"Fia's in Thay. I'm sure of it. Whatever else she is, she's not a slave. The thing is, I'm not sure she's Fia either."
He finally stops. "You might as well turn me into a frog. I've just remembered a lot of things I never wanted to. Amphibian's probably have it easier."

OK Snaggle, putting you after Mirth. Go forth and take the tower back.
Due to Fairwind and Mirth's awesomeness and the creepers apparently being in a coma, you have a surprise round. ONE action each - i.e. move, standard or minor - before you go into init order. Make the most of it.

I'd say move as far as we can inside before they can react, depending on what Fairwind wants to do say for example run take the move off for the stairs and move ahead for the rest then Leo will follow suit but will use the last move to go 1 square adjacent once inside the room so Snaggletooth can head where Leo would have been had he stayed behind Fairwind especially as I believe both Fairwind and Snaggletooth have a 6 move whilst Leo has a 5 move, not sure of the rest but I assume Brujo would do likewise on the right hand side so we can get everyone inside the room however that leaves the matter of opportunity attacks... pardon my language
Rev DM |
The creepers can do nothing until you've all completed your surprise round actions. Which is bad news for them, but good news for you.
Moves required to enter the room:
Fairwind - move to anywhere within 6 squares. If running, within 8 squares.
Leo - move to anywhere within 3 squares (2 to go up, 3 left over). If running, within 5 squares.
Brujo - move to anywhere within 1 square (4 to go up, 1 left over). If running, within 3 squares.
Mirth - move to doorway. If running, can get 2 squares into the room.
Snaggle - move to doorway (in this case, one step behind Mirth). If running can get 1 square into the room.
Cronin - can't get further than the bottom step. If running and there's space, can get to the doorway.
Caine - can't get up steps during surprise round unless others run. If they do, he can get to the top of the stairs.

Looking at this, there is no reason I can see why you shouldn't all take your surprise round and first round actions all at once. The creepers can do nothing until you've had both. Feel free to do so. You'll be attacking at -5 until Snaggle/Mirth sort the trap.

Move to H4. I would rather take my actions in order, as a lot depends on the position of others.

At the monastery
"You're going to what?" Palagro looks at her white-faced and shocked.
"Perigia, I can see the power in you, but that's just nuts. What are you even planning to do even if you do get to Thay? You can't just stroll in and start asking if anyone's seen Fia. At least, I guess you can, but you'll last 30 seconds."
"Listen to me. I've told you what I know because I wanted you to - oh, I don't know. Be able to see it was hopeless and Fia isn't even Fia any more. I didn't think you'd go after her. For all you know there's nothing to go after. They say spellplague kills everyone in the end. The flame just eats them up. And you know what? If that's true, I really hope it's eaten Fia. And yes, you can blast me for saying that and no, it won't make it one bit less true."

Taking a moment Brujo reaches into his pocket and retrieves rod
Minor action retrieve sunrod for use
Placing it firmly inside his belt, he rushes into the room.
Move to K6 is possible
He arcs his blade sending a wave of power at the creeper.
Changing ray on C2 1d20+8=22 vs Reflex; Damage 1d8+5=9 force damage, and c2 is dazed until the end of my next turn.
Leo the half elven Paladin |
Let me know if this is okay, Leo moves to L-5 and employs a piercing smite on C#2 Roll 1d20+9: 20+9 for Total of 29, damage is 2d8+4 maximised to 20+1d6 for his magic sword Roll 1d6:5 added to rest for a total of 25 damage to C#2, if this is not possible then Leo will just head for M-7, just wasn't sure if this is actually possible
Leo heads in.

Let me know if this is okay, ...

All fine Leo.
Following hard on Fairwind's heels, Leo and Brujo hurtle into the room, swiftly surrounding C2. The unnatural darkness does nothing to reduce the ferocity of their attacks. Brujo's sunrod lights, but is instantly muted by the arcane shadows.

Mirth Emberhand |
Taking a deep breath, Mirth plunges into the darkness, moving straight for the center of the room, as quietly as her haste allows.
The tiefling kneels where she hopes the offending tile is, her arcane senses probing for weak points in the glamour.
Surprise round: Run to J4.
Round 1: Move to I9 (taking the -5 penalty to stealth, turning my 30 into a 25), then employing Arcana 1d20+11=26 (not accounting for any darkness penalty) to evaluate the enchantment.
Rev DM |
Mirth moves as swiftly and silently as her shadow serpent. Kneeling beside the offending trap, she quickly senses its workings and realises that with her aid, it will now be a simple matter for her kobold ally to disable it. It is not a complex affair.
No penalty for the darkness to identify the kind of trap and the high roll reduces the DC to disable it as well. Snaggletooth now knows exactly where the trigger is and how to destroy it..
