Caine - You can ask Allendi (at the monastery) to transfer the enchantment of your old weapon to the longsword. He has the ability to do that, but it will take a day for him to get organised and do the ritual.

Yes, you are very short on that skill as a group. Brujo and Mirth are trained though. My mistake, I assumed Leo was for some reason.

Okay there's an easy way to remedy that problem

"Hey Brujo, Mirth, Cronin any of you know anything about magic?" Leo asks.

And no there was absolutely no sarcasm involved in that statement!

Cronin shakes his head. "I would not be the last resort, but I would hardly be the first choice either. Arcane secrets are not for me."

"Me too, but I was hoping you'd know more than me... well I guess I better drag one of those two over before we have to rush upstairs," Leo nods back to Cronin as he wanders over to Brujo and Mirth.

"Could one of you take a gander in that toom over there in case there's something useful we could use against whoever Devlin's rushed to join?" he asks them.

In case its relevant a diplomacy check with Leo's skill at +12: Roll 1d20+12:11+12 for Total of 23

You don't normally have to use skill checks among your party unless they're dominated or otherwise compelled to behave in some abnormal way.

Cronin finishes the last of his prayers and obligingly enters the guard room to look around. "You'd know better than me, Leo. Armour and weapons are your toolkit. To me they're just a necessary evil."

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

"I know a bit about it," Mirth replies to Leo. "For a pretty face like thine, I might be persuaded to offer my answers free of charge." she answers tartly.

She follows the Paladin back to the guardroom reluctantly, looking over her shoulder at the stairway leading upward.

Arcana: 1d20+11=23

Mirth's tail flicks as she immediately sees a suit of reddish scale amour among the racks. To the uninitiated, the surface patina might pass as rust, but she knows better.

Spoiler:

Martyr's Armour - level 7

Enhancement: +2 AC

Power (At-Will): Minor Action. You take a –1 penalty to AC until the end of your next turn, and allies adjacent to you gain a +1 power bonus to AC until the end of your next turn.
Power (Daily): Immediate Interrupt. Use this power when an adjacent ally is attacked. You take a penalty to your AC equal to the enhancement bonus of this armor; your ally adds an equal power bonus to his AC. Both effects last until the end of your next turn.

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Yep, you just have to ask us nicely, Leo. :D

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

"That one." she points a finger at the scaled tunic. "The appalling color aside, it should help thee keep thine allies safe... though at some cost."

Assuming there are daggers available on the racks, Mirth will help herself to a pair of them... girl can't ever have enough pokey bits.

The tiefling produces a small purse with a flourish and a smile. "With my thanks, little dragon." She counts out coins into the kobold's waiting hand.

Yes - plenty of daggers.

The kobold gathers the survivors and counts the coins carefully into equal piles. Then he nods and goes back to Mirth, pulling her down to his level and whispering to her.

Draconic

Spoiler:

"Next time be more sneaky. Good kobolds cheat. But we are very scary kobolds and we understand you fear us, so we forgive you."

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Snaggletooth, after embracing his old friend, turns to the other kobolds and points to the north room.

Draconic

Spoiler:
You fight well. You earn your pay. As promised, all my gold and silver. Take weapons from that room as well.

Then he opens his backpack and dumps the silver into a large pile on the floor. Then he opens his pouch and takes his gold out, too. he leaves the jewels (earrings) in the bag. Not part of the bargain.

He displays the pile for the kobolds to see. Then with a big show, he turns his back on the pile, leaving it for the other kobolds to take.

In accordance with the "kobold spoils system"

Rev

Spoiler:
what exactly was on the kobold rack? I want first dibs for me and Kneebiter. Also, I am assuming that the kobolds will the good sense to get out of town rather than joining us for the epic battle. Kneebiter might stay, out of loyalty and gratitude, but it is a bit much to expect the others to. Is this your feelings on the matter? I also don't have any more money to bribe them with. :) Perhaps when the quest is over, Kneebiter and Snaggletooth can rejoin their kin and take over as leaders of a new kobold band, the "Undying".

used 4 healing surges, 1 left, back up to max hp (43)

Mirth Emberhand wrote:

Brujo: Nice icon choice! It looks much more Brujo-esque, IMO!

I concur. Snaggletooth will think twice before messing with THIS Brujo. (the other one looked moody, but not dangerous)

The rack only contains the mundane equipment taken from the kobolds when they were captured. Snaggletooth can stock up on daggers, hand crossbow and bolts or a shortsword if he wants. The shortsword he got from Fairwind is in the possession of K8 who is not on the path to redemption and won't be giving it back unless told he has to.

Snaggletooth and Kneebiter scour the weapon rack for hidden treasures. Kneebiter finally shrugs. "Only our old things. We will take them and you will choose first." He pointedly speaks in Common.

Then Kneebiter calls all the remaining kobolds to his side. "We are mighty and we thank you for your gold. Now, we leave. Snaggletooth, stay with them and bring us Devlin's gold. Also his spine. That would be good."

On this rousing note, he leads his band away. Snaggletooth at least is aware that the power structure of the Spellguard kobold community has been radically changed. Silence falls as you realise that the end of your long search is at hand.

Snaggletooth

Spoiler:

Kneebiter would much rather take advantage of his new status to get out of there and start taking over Bleak's Band. Snaggletooth can go and join them if he survives the quest.

Short rest taken. Please update hp and remaining surges in your profiles and note any daily powers already used.

Male Half Elf Paladin 6th

"Thanks Mirth," Leo grins as he begins to swap his armour for the replacement once he's tried to clean it up a bit.

"Can anyone use a spare suit of scale armour?" Leo asks and if not he'll stow the armour away until he can find a way to either donate it to his church or sell it off for something either he or the party needs the next chance they get.

Fire still rippling over his body, Brujo continues after Devlin. "Get out!" a voice rips through his mind as he gets closer to the door.

Brujo takes a knee as his wits come back to him. Breathing heavily he takes a moment to rest. He looks behind him over to the party. The events that took place... cloudy.

Burning 3 surges to put me at full. 6 remaining

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

"May it protect us both." she says to Leo, with no hint of jest in her tone.

Quickly tending to the most painful of her wounds, Mirth slouches against the northern wall of the main corridor where she can watch the eastern staircase, while her companions dawdle.

Using 1 surge, currently at 26/32 HP with 2 surges remaining. Power use, new equipment and Kobold payment reflected in profile.

Sitting in G11, in case it matters. Rev, have we hit a Milestone yet?

AP time everyone!

Plans?

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

I have a utility daily left that will theoretically let me scout through the eyes of a summoned critter. Prolly wise to use that before heading upstairs, since Devlin now has had time to rally troops and organize defenses.

Male Half Elf Paladin 6th

I've been keeping my daily ready for this battle, however given what happened in the last battle a little heads up wouldn't hurt

"Caine how does that battle standard Mirth gave you work?" Leo asks the Commander.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Snaggletooth grabs a hand crossbow, 20 bolts, quiver/case, shortsword, and new(er) cloak to replace his tattered one. He leaves the rest to the new gang.

Snaggletooth is absolutely obsessed with cloaks. He must have picked up about four by now and rejected them all.

Nervy silence prevails as the group make their plans.

I thought Mirth was casting her spell to summon something that allows her to spy the lay of the land upstairs?

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

I am doing so Leo, I had just hoped more of the party might chime in. :(

Mirth approaches the stairs cautiously, recalling the kobold's mention of Devlin fleeing into the darkness.

Kneeling beside the stairwell she whispers several words of summoning, coaxing a tenebrous serpent out of her own shadow. She urges the shadow-figment up the stairs, looking avidly through its eyes.

Summon Shadow Serpent. Rev, please feel free to make stealth/perception checks for snakey as necessary, since I am unlikely to be available when needed. :)

Mirth stands at the bottom of the stairs, intent on the serpent as it winds its way upwards. In unconscious imitation of the conjured shadow, her head moves from side to side, delicately sniffing the air.

Mirth

Spoiler:

You conjured a serpent. They rely on smell rather than sight, so I'm ruling that in this case you are translating what the serpent picks up as scent as vision.

An image builds in your mind's eye. Unnatural darkness fills the room above, swathing everything in shadow, but while this hides most things, including your shadowing conjuration, it does not hide everything.

Tiny flickers of uneasy movement betray at least one creeper, poised to attack by the stairwell. You cannot discern more.

Perception checks for shadow serpent (1d20 4=9, 1d20 4=19). Manually amended as I accidentally rolled one too many checks. Last one was a flub. Minor to conjure the beastie - and I'm assuming you conjured it as far away from you as possible which would be in the stairwell, three squares above you. I don't think you can cast it further into a room you can't see than that. Two more minors to make the perception checks. First picks up the darkness, second the presence of the creeper or creepers.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

Rev:

Spoiler:
Quite right, thanks for the correction! I can only command the serpent so long as I have LoE to it, so I assume that is as far as the critter can go without Mirth climbing the stairs, correct?

"Another creeper awaitsss our coming," Mirth mutters. "Perhapsss more than one." Her eyes narrow. "A shroud of darknesss above, deeper than shadowsss."

Rev, how many squares of movement does it take to get from bottom of this stairwell (J18) to the top (J2,+1 floor)?

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

"Great," is all Fairwind can muster by way of response.

The ceilings are 15 foot high so the staircases are three squares high, each one costing two movement points to move through.

Mirth

Spoiler:

If you want to move the serpent further you will have to climb the stairs. The creepers have darkvision, and they know the group are below, but if you stand at the top in the stairwell you can make a stealth check to see if you stay hidden.

Do you have a plan of attack?

All

Spoiler:

For those of you that don't visit the discussion thread on a regular basis, Perigia will be rejoining you at the end of this adventure. She is back at the monastery at the moment and I will be running a small side quest for her.

Male Half Elf Paladin 6th

"Caine how does that standard work? Do you have to plant it upstairs or does it work over a period of time so we can gain its benefits as we charge up there?" Leo asks.

"We could risk charging up there but we'll need a light source and risk more attacks like the one we suffered down here," Leo openly ponders.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

"Leo."

The tiefling looks sidewise at the newly crimson-armored paladin, mildly vexed at having to explain the intricacies of magic to the untutored.

"Methinks that this darkness will prove stronger than a sunrod or a few torches."

Rev, is that correct? Arcana: 1d20+11=19

Mirth's serpent-enhanced senses confirm that the darkness is unnatural and will consume a normal light source.

Yup. Sunrods are not useful at this point. You may be able to dispel the effect though.

Male Half Elf Paladin 6th

"So exactly how many are there up there in addition to Devlin?" Leo whispers thoughtfully.

Leo the half elven Paladin wrote:

Leo

Spoiler:

I'm sure Caine will tell you himself when he resurfaces, but the stats are posted below.

Power (Encounter • Zone): Standard Action. When you plant the battle standard in your space or an adjacent square, it creates a zone in a close burst 5. While within the zone, you and your allies gain a +1 power bonus on damage rolls.
This effect lasts until the end of the encounter or until the battle standard is removed from the ground. Any character in or adjacent to a battle standard’s square can remove it from the ground as a standard action.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6
Leo the half elven Paladin wrote:

"With certainty? One creeper," Mirth whispers in return. "Though soon I shall be able to tell thee more."

Holding a slender finger to her lips, she slips silently into the shadows that line the stairwell.

Rev, she's goin' up, though she doesn't intend to stay long. Stealth: 1d20+12=23 Taking it slowly so as not to incur penalties. If we have an additional Magic item power use from a milestone, she'll have her Sceptre readied, otherwise she'll trust to her staff.

Mirth moves up the stairs so quietly that not even the shadows that flow around her are aware of her presence. Barely breathing, she sends her thought into the spirit snake, scenting the air in the tower room.

Mirth

Spoiler:

Roll me 2 more perception checks please.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

Rev:

Spoiler:

Mirth

Spoiler:

The snake moves in the dark, darting further into the room. There are more creepers, but nothing that smells human. You can identify six definite forms.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

Rev:

Spoiler:
How would one go about dispelling this darkness, if that is indeed possible? Also, can Mirth translate the scent images to a rough map? If not, I have more than enough to justify the trip, and will get the hell out of Dodge.

Mirth

Spoiler:

Your snake senses combine with your arcane powers to serve you well enough. The chamber above is unfurnished and there are two creepers behind the door. The others that you sense are poised, ready to move at the first sign of intruders. You smell their paddy feet shifting under their weight.

The darkness comes from the centre of the room (and you know you would not have sensed its source if you had not sent your serpent so far into danger). One of the floor tiles smells different, as though creeper hands had recently touched and lifted it.

You are still unsure of the total number of creepers waiting for you, but they are entirely unaware of your serpent as they rolled utter poo. The darkness is a spell located under the central floor square. Thievery will disable it, but it will need an arcana check as well to work out how to do so. And you'll be working in the dark.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

Rev:

Spoiler:
Sneak roll to get back down: 1d20+12=30! If you don't need it for getting back down, I'll happily keep it for my next trip upstairs!

Emerging some moments later from the stairwell, the tiefling sits for a moment before stalking, tail a-twitch and eyes blazing, to where the rest of her companions wait.

"Creepers above, paired in ambush at the door. Four more wait beyond, all hidden under an enchantment of darkness," she murmurs. "The enchantment can be broken, at some peril."

Mirth regards Snaggletooth for a long moment. "Little dragon, how much heroic blood still runs in thy veins?"

Mirth

Spoiler:

Keep the roll, you can come back without any trouble.

Cronin speaks up. "Forewarning is helpful. Mirth, what kind of cover would you or Snaggletooth need to give you time to disable the darkness? We will be fighting blind until you do. Can Fairwind and Snaggletooth at least try remove the ambush by the door before you go in?"

Sorry to force you on here, but paralysis seems to have struck. When you have finished making your plans for the attack on the next level, please put yourselves in marching order.

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

All I would suggest is that for the love of God, that we all move! Please don't let's all just stand on the staircase; if you have to take an OA, then suck it up! That is all, soldier. :D

Mirth considers Cronin's question for only for a moment. "It will take as long as it takes, and both of us shall be needed."

She shrugs and looks pointedly at Leo and Brujo. "The enchantment lies in the center of the room above... keep the creepers away, if thee wish to see it broken."

My recommendation is for heavies to go in first and pull critters to the periphery, with Snaggy and I last, moving for the trap area in the middle. Anyone have abilities that can push/pull/slide the ambush at the dorrway?

"Sounds like I'm taking point, but what about the rest of you?" Leo sighs as he gets up and stretches.

Caine seems to be busy at the moment, but I'm taking the liberty of thinking he'll agree. He has Wolf Pack tactics at his disposal which will let him shift an ally.

Brjuo, Snaggletooth?

For Rev

Spoiler:
Sorry, I haven't been able to post sooner as I am still in the process of normalizing my office routine. Please DMNPC my character as may be needed. Thanks

Male Kobold Rogue 6

I concur with Mirth. Put me in front of her, but behind everyone else. Or do you want me to spring the ambush?

"Blood of Dragons flows in me." Snaggletooth points to his heart. "I heroic enough to charge in room. Good idea?" Snaggle asks his comrades.

I prefer meatshields, I mean defenders, going first to absorb some attacks. Snaggle is the twiceborn kobold, too.

Female Tiefling Wizard 6

Personally, I think it would be best for Leo or Brujo (or even Caine) to actually spring the ambush(es) while Snaggy and I move to and work on the trap.

Based on my understanding of the trap, Mirth will need to take a look at its arcane workings and then advise Snaggy on how to break it. Of course ALL of this will be done in the dark, until the enchantment is broken...
