At the monastery
"Yeah, well ... good." He taps his fingers on the table.
"Look, if you're serious about finding Fia, you should at least talk to the Order of the Blue Flame. If anyone can help with a spellscarred, it's them. I don't know much about them myself, only that they're pretty much the only organisation that actually studied the effects."
"I was going to say 'live long and prosper' but that's looking unlikely where you're planning to go. The 'live long' part might be right."

Rev DM |

At the monastery
"The Order? They're welcome most places. Folks are scared of the spellscarred - you know that. If you're going straight to Thay ... Perigia, are you sure about this? You'll have to get through Netheril somehow and that won't be easy."
There's genuine concern on Palagro's face.

I'm fine. I just don't have much time due to the constant testing, planning my meals, and increased exercise. I think about food all the time now. I just don't eat it. :)
Can I get to Mirth this round? If so put me up next to her. Otherwise, get me close as you can. If I am next to her....
Snaggletooth hustles over to Mirth. "You know what I need to do?" He asks her. "O.K. I'll do that."
It's a surprise round, so that should be all I can do. but if a check is needed, Thievery=d20+12=13+12=25. Otherwise, I will use the Thievery check on my turn in the first round. Once the lights are on, I will move and shift then. (so you don't have to wait for me)

Rev DM |

Good to see you. And I can only imagine what it must be like dealing with the food issues.
Yes, it is a surprise round, but as the creepers are going after you, you'll be able to take your first round action as well before they can do anything constructive. I'll sort out the narrative and the map shortly.

Rev DM |

Plunging into the darkness after Mirth, Snaggletooth almost sneers at the ease of the trap. Between them, the sneaky pair dispel the arcane darkness with contempt.
Brujo's sunrod flares, revealing an tower chamber adorned only with infuriated creepers and a single, spartan desk and chair.
Cronin ploughs into the room behind Snaggletooth, turning on his heel and lancing Selune's light into C2. As the creepers stand unable to do anything, Caine appears in the doorway.
Technically Caine is up but you can only get as far as the doorway in the surprise round and the creepers go before you in round one.

Dumb luck serves Fairwind well and she knows with certainty that one creeper at least is going to need a new cloak and with a bit of luck a few new body parts. That hits.
C1 shifts away from Fairwind and waits, poised for C6 to move into a flanking position before stabbing at the swordmage. Pallid eyes blink with venom as the blade drives deep.
C1 v Brujo (1d20 13=30, 1d4 5=8, 1d6=1). 9hp damage to Brujo.
C2, fighting for its life, stabs at Leo, hoping to hurt the paladin and failing miserably to do anything useful at all.
C2 v Leo (1d20 11, 1d4 5=[13, 11], [1, 5])
C3 and C4 advance on the trap defilers, blinking rapidly in the newly lit chamber.
C5 scuttles in a curious circuit that seems to mask its movements before leaping at Fairwind and exacting vengeance for the harm done to C1. Used shadow walk to move 4 squares and gain CA, but had to do a kind of rhumba in order to achieve this.
C5 v Fairwind (1d20 13=28, 1d4 5=6, 1d6=3)
C6's flanking move is a complete success from the point of view of the creepers as yet another dagger finds its way past Brujo's defenses.
C6 v Brujo (1d20 13=26, 1d4 5=9, 1d6=4). Another 13hp damage to Brujo, bringing his total damage this round to 22.
Seeing his comrades under attack, Caine shifts into the room and bring his blade down on C1, smiting mightily into the shadowy creature.

Move - Shift to I3. Minor - morph longsword to shortsword. Standard - Twin Strike - 1st attack: Shortsword 1d20+12 vs AC = 27; Damage 1d6+2 = 6 + Quarry 1d8 = 3 + Sneak Attack 2d8 = 4. 1st hit deals 13 damage. 2nd attack 1d20+10 = 15 vs AC. Miss.
Fairwind leaps to Brujo's aid and deftly slices a dark one.

Leo the half elven Paladin |

Leo glares at the foes assembled before them noting one on the other side of the battle approaching Fairwind.
Divine challenge on C5
His sword gleaming ever brighter with light is like a torch as it swings at his original foe.
Holy Strike on C2: 1d20+9 vs AC: Roll 1d20+9: 14+9 for Total of 23 if hit does 1d8+6pts of radiant damage Roll(1d8)+6:7+6 for Total of 13
Leo then shifts to help Brujo.
Shifts to M-5
"Hey nibbles, care to for a bite?" Leo taunts the creeper he's approaching.

Brujo |

"Hey do you wanna die, switch with me[i]", the voice hisses in his head. "[i]I can make short work of these guys no problem"
"Get out of my head!" Brujo yells as he jumps back and sends an arc of blue fire at the closest creeper.
Shift to J6. Changing Ray on c1 1d20+8=23 vs Reflex; Damage 1d8+5=7 force damage, and c1 is dazed until the end of my next turn
As he jumps back he takes a moment to place a fiery mark on another enemy.
Minor aegis of shielding on C6

The creepers finch back as both Leo and Brujo's attacks hit hard. Neither can take much more from the look of things. C6's fingers curl around its dagger at Leo's taunts, but it bides its time.

In his element, Snaggletooth stabs viciously and effectively at 6 before shifting to protect Cronin from anything that dares to attack the shifter. There is a look of fierce determination on the kobold's face as he goes to work.
Cronin nods in gratitude and fires divine light into C2. "Apologies friend Caine," he adds, as the warlord is blinded by the demolition of the creeper. In compensation, some of Selune's blessing rubs off on the Commander. Caine sighs, grins evilly and hefts his weapon.
"This is familiar. Don't think it'll make much difference. They're going down!"
LoF v C2 (Ref). On hit, 2 bonus to Caine (1d20 7=17, 1d8 6=10)
Surrounded and dazed, C1 can do little but strike out at Brujo, seeking vengeance. Shar is not in a giving mood and the blow misses.
C1 v Brujo (1d20 11=15, 1d4 5=6)
Unable to move, C3 and C4 hurl daggers at their tormentor. Sensing the danger, Mirth whirls her cloak about her to try and deflect the blows, but fury gives their aim astonishing accuracy.
C3 v Mirth (1d20 11=26, 1d4 5=7)
7hp damage to Mirth.
C4 ranged v Mirth (1d20 11=29, 1d4 5=7)
7hp damage to Mirth, which bloodies her.
C5 circles around to attack the tiefling, hissing as it lands yet another blow, this one so unexpected and vicious that she drops to the ground. Kelemvor's revenge strikes at once, as Leo's divine challenge is ignored.
C5 ranged v Mirth (1d20 11=20, 1d4 5=6, 1d6=6). Used Shadow walk to gain CA. Further 12hp damage to Mirth. Total 26, which I think puts her at 0hp.
Baulked of Brujo as prey, C6 strikes hard at Leo, easily finding a way past his defenses.
C6 v Leo(1d20 11=26, 1d4 5=9). 9hp damage to Leo. Note. Manually amended, C6 was going for Brujo until I realised it was dazed - courtesy of Snaggle.
Caine retaliates at once. "Get back Fairwind. Need you sighted." With a mighty blow, he demolishing C1, leaving Brujo blind, but Fairwind clear of danger and free to act.

"... I know when I'm talking to a wall. You're going to head into Thay via Netheril and through goodness knows what to find Fia and hope you can get your sister back. Well, I hope so too, but only if you get Fia back. Because trust me, the thing that came out the spellplague wasn't anything like any Fia you ever met. There may be someone in there still, but it's hidden deep and I'm guessing it doesn't want to be found. Is it frog time yet?"

Brujo |

Aegis of shielding reduces C6's damage by 7. so only two damage to Leo.
Brujo darts between Mirth and Cronin, releasing another wave of energy
Shift to J6. Changin Ray on C6 1d20+8=28; Damage 1d8+5=13 force damage. Bonus Damage, enchanment 1d6=5 cold damage, high crit 1d8=6 damage.

Aegis of shielding on C5

Snaggletooth |

um, Rev? Snaggletooth is not blinded. Unless the blindness is close burst2. Snaggletooth is at k8, not k7. (last turn-"then shift to k8 to protect Cronin.") I did that intentionally to avoid blindness when Leo or someone else finished C6 off. (he was dazed, so Leo would still get CA against him) I was going to use a crossbow bolt this turn if he was still standing, which he is not. I will leave C5 to Brujo and Caine and focus on C3 and C4.
Snaggletooth hears the creeper explode behind him and knows that he is now the first line of defense against the remaining creepers. "You no touch my friends, dark ones!" He shouts at them. then moves in front of them to draw their attention and shoots his crossbow at the creeper to his left. move- draw crossbow, deft strike on C3- move two squares to I8 and d20+7 vs AC, 21, if hit, 4+3= 7hp damage to C3. minor- shift to J8 in front of Cronin.

Rev DM |

Of course. You are quite right and you sensibly got clear. Snaggle is a very canny kobold.
The kobold eases his way towards the advancing creepers, leaving C5 to the tender mercies of his companions. A crossbow bolt thunks hard into C3's body.
Cronin touches Mirth gently on the forehead. "Selune's grace fill and guide you," he murmurs, watching carefully until he's certain that her wounds have closed over, an expression of concern on his face.
extra healing for Mirth (1d6 4=5). Mirth is now on 13hp and has one surge left.
As he swings back toward the oncoming creepers, his expression changes to one of loathing. "Spawn of Shar. Back to the shadows with you." Divine light skewers C5 and Caine's sight clears.
Sacred Flame v C5 (Ref) (1d20 7=22, 1d6 6=12)
Immediate save v blindness courtesy of Sacred Flame. (1d20=10)
Sensing that now or never is the time to rid themselves of the swordmage and his terrifying blue fire, the creepers converge on Brujo. Like a hissing tide of blackness, they appear around him, stabbing viciously. Like Mirth before him, Brujo slumps to the ground under the concerted assault.
C5 has cause to regret that choice as Kelemvor punishes it for refusing to accept Leo's challenge.
C3 v Brujo (1d20 13=31, 1d4 5=7, 1d6=4). 11hp damage to Brujo
C4 v Brujo (1d20 13=27, 1d4 5=7, 1d6=6). 13hp damage to Brujo.
C5 v Brujo (1d20 13=24, 1d4 5=6, 1d6=3). 9hp damage to Brujo. Total damage 33hp. I believe that puts him at -2. Apologies Brujo, but it makes tactical sense for them to attack the perceived biggest threat.
His sight restored, Caine charges into battle again. Striding towards C4, he takes advantage of Cronin's flanking presence and moves Snaggletooth clear of any danger of blinding. Distracted by its successful attack on Brujo, the creeper neither sees nor hears the warlord until it's too late and the massive blow that follows bloodies it in one move.
Wolf Pack tactics. Shift used on Snaggle. (1d20 12=32, 1d10 4=6). Crit v C4.

Leo the half elven Paladin |

Leo's holy symbol flickers into light as Leo's vision clears.
Minor action as divine mettle grants Leo a saving throw: Roll 1d20: 20!
Noting Brujo and Mirth's fallen bodies Leo glares at the nearest foe.
Moves first diagonally to L-3 then up to J-3 and finally to I-4 he bestows upon C#5 an invigorating smite!
"Hope I didn't keep you waiting TOO long!" Leo glares at his foe.
Invigorating Smite: Roll 1d20+9: 18+9 for Total of 27 to hit doing 2d8+4 damage: Rolling 7+6+4 for Total of 17 damage to Creeper#5 and if this is so both Brujo and Mirth (and any other bloodied allies) regain 7hp
Oh and because Leo tried to hit C#5 his divine challenge remains in operation on that creeper!

Rev DM |

Fairwind, save v blindness please.
Fairwind and Leo between them inflict more damage on C4 and C5, either brushing off or ignoring the handicapping darkness, sweeping through the battlefield like twin forces of nature. Leo's prayers restore life and energy to Brujo and Mirth.

Snaggletooth |

naw, it's cool. Well, let's see if this works. move-j9,k9,l9,m8, and into position at l7. standard-BLINDING BARRAGE!! blast3 gets all three, d20+7, starting with C5, 23, C3, 19, and C4, 21, if hit 2d6+3 and THEY are blinded until end of my next turn. (6+3=9hp damage, 7+3=10hp damage, and 3+3=6hp damage unless I just roll damage once, then 9hp each) minor- shift to m7.
"I tired of creepers. I take them down in one swoop!" Snaggletooth declares as he moves into position and unleashes a barrage of crossbow bolts at the remaining creepers. His aim is such that when struck, the blood rolls into their eyes and blinds them temporarily. Then he shifts away.
Rev, does C4 get an OA on Snaggle since he is adjacent and using a ranged attack? Just checking.
EDIT: I meant move to L6, not L7, that should work

Rev DM |

No OA from C4. Blinding Barrage is a close blast and that doesn't provoke them. You only roll once for damage with area attacks, so I've taken the 9hp from the creepers. You hit the lot :D
Snaggletooth turns the tables on the creepers to devastating effect, blinding all three of them and leaving the field open for his companions to mop up the battle.
Cronin snarls slightly and moves back, trying to offer help to Brujo and Fairwind through his attack. Divine light fills the room, but fails to hit the target.
Sacred Flame (Ref) v C3 (1d20 9=14, 1d6 6=10). Miss.
Enraged, bloodied and blinded, the creepers lash out wildly, unable to flank and leaving themselves vulnerable. Daggers hiss through the air and meet nothing.

C4 v Brujo (1d20 6=21, 1d4 5=8)
