Sorry, some of us like to sleep in on a Sunday. lol. Anwyay, you never said if i was interpreting the rules wrong with my theater generating money while i was away ruling.
As long as you aren't adding your character's bonuses to the check, you can do exactly that.
If you have a manager, you can use their check in place of your own.
If there is no manager, the check does not include any modifiers except for those from the rooms/teams themselves.
Also, I don't make great logical leaps, nor can I read minds. If you are asking me a question, you need to do so directly and succinctly.
EXAMPLE: "Ravingdork, why is the sky blue?" works just fine.
"I wonder why the sky is blue?" isn't going to cut it, as it is unlikely that I will realize you are asking a question, much less addressing me.

Yeah, I'm just bored and upset because the GM for our live games just informed me that we won't be playing for a whole month due to scheduling conflicts. You guys are literally all I've got for my roleplay fix.
sorry, it was part of me responding to a remark you had said to me so I assumed it would be obvious. I'll make sure to be more direct next time.
No worries. Communication via text alone can be quite difficult, as there is so much conveyance that is assumed, but not actually transferred. Quoting the previous person's post can also help provide context (much as I have done in this post).
Also, please ignore the bit about Attrition in my post above (I've since edited it out). I was quite wrong about its relevance in this case.

DM, with your permission, I would like to take the "attached" drawback (keyed to Riva's new daughter) in exchange for a third character trait (leaning towards "mathematical prodigy").
Also, Riva has invested in better locks for her library, so as to prevent future break ins. I have greatly expanded the description of the library to include the necessary information on these changes and have paid for everything except for the vault's alarm spell (which will have to come later I guess).

Powergaming DM |

I was not planning on allowing draw backs. Still mathematical prodigy is not really a big bonus for you those are both already knowledge skill.
I guess it's alright. But you do realize that no koblod in living memory has lived to the age of 25?
Edit: Never mind forgot you are a Sorcerer not a wizard. Ya I don't want to get into the trade drawbacks for traits game. I will allow you to take the drawback without the trait if you want, but I doubt you do.

Ravingdork |

DM...I say yet again, PLEASE tell us what resources and notes of interest we found in the explored hexes during our characters' first module escapades. Let me know what they are and where they are so I can mark them appropriately on the map.
If you are not going to, you can at least acknowledge my request and let us know why you're going that route.
Never mind forgot you are a Sorcerer not a wizard. Ya I don't want to get into the trade drawbacks for traits game. I will allow you to take the drawback without the trait if you want, but I doubt you do.
Powergaming DM indeed. ;P
Well, darn.
Problem with being a sorcerer (even a sage sorcerer) is the lack of knowledge class skills. Why would my class make any difference in your decision anyways?
Are we allowed to recruit (Say an Acolyte) at the same time we have construction going on? I think the answer is yes, but I want to make sure. It would appear a lowly acolyte, while not good at managing temple, would be useful and not cost a regular paycheck ;)
The only time you really spend is getting the capital and/or gold together to make it happen. You can totally do other downtime actions (or non-downtime actions as the case appears here) while construction goes on in the background.

Powergaming DM |

I figured that you had already placed though the first module so you would know what resources and notes of interest are there.
Wizards already have all the knowledge skills so I figured that trait would not be a big deal. But as you said for a sorcerer it is a big deal. Also if you stat doing draw backs then everyone is going to starting doing them which make it harder for me to keep track of and if the DM does not gear adventure to exploit drawback well it's not really a drawback is it?

Ravingdork |

I figured that you had already placed though the first module so you would know what resources and notes of interest are there.
I had a DM who once ran us through the first module...over a year ago, maybe two.
Unfortunately, I do not now have access to the module (it belonged to the GM, not to me), nor its maps or notes, and my memory is such that I cannot remember who joined me at the movie theater last weekend, much less which specific hexes had what resources year ago.

Adular |

Okay, I will try to point out somethings...
Oh, and I went with the acolyte purchase to show that yes, Adular is having an effect on some in the town as much as anything. Pardon the long winded post.
Do we have a list for NPCs in our fair land? I Just introduced three of them and of course, Riva has her apprentice and heir while Rory has a romantic interest. It just occurs to me a list we could all check might be of use.

Rory Ward |

I'll just list all the sites listed on the map
B30: Barbarian Cairn (dead body)
B34: Trap filled Glade (Trap)
B38: Oleg's trading post (Settlement)
B40: Bokken's Hut (hut)
C33: Dead Trapper (dead body)
C35: Fairy Nest (monster)
C37: Raddish Patch (plant)
C39: Spider Nest (monster)
D32: Frog Pond (landmark)
D34: Temple of the Elk (ruin)
D36: Thorn River Camp (bridge)
D38: Gold Mine (Resource)
D40: Forgotten Cache (dead body)
E31: Statue of Erastil (landmark)
E33: Boggard Lair (monster)
E35: Tuskgutter's Lair (monster)
E37: Rickety bridge (Bridge)
E39: Old Sycamore (or what's left of it) (lair)
E41: Nettle's Crossing (bridge)
F30: Dead Unicorn (dead body)
F32: Tazlwyrm Den (bridge)
F34: Trapped Thylacine (trap)
F36: Fangberry thicket (plant)
F38: River Crossing (bridge)
F40: Sootscale's Caverns (resorce)
G37: Stag Lord's Fotress (ruin)
That's everything. Nettle's crossing is a broken down bridge. Despite being marked "bridge" there is no bridge at the Tazlwyrm den, just remains of one i guess. The old kobold lair is an abandoned silver mine that seems to still be viable. It was abandoned apparently for being so far away. Um... i think that's really it as far as notes are concerened, lemme know if you need anything else.

Ravingdork |

Plants are considered resources then? I'm wondering how I should mark these on the map. Ruins, bridges, lairs, landmarks, resources, and ruins are easy enough, but if our characters have already done the encounters, I see no reason to mark monsters and dead bodies on the map.
Should I consider monsters slain, traps sprung, and treasure plundered (and assumed to have already been incorporated into our starting funds)?

Rory Ward |

well the radish path is a radish patch. Maybe if we get up there we can build a farm or something at a reduced price? I dunno if the book already has rules for that like the temple and stag lord's place. the fangberry bush is a lot of thorn bushes, no resources there.
Also, DM, what are we to do about any of the magical items that are awarded in the game? Not just the stag lord's stuff but like the stuff found at the dead barbarian's place and the secret stache. I'm going through and see there's a ring of swimming, a wand of burning hands (CL 2, 4 charges), a +1 scalemale, seven +1 flaming crossbow bolts, boots of elven kind, and of coarse the stag lord's helm and his +1 leather armor. Hell, tartuk had a wand of magic missle CL 3, 28 charges) and a bracers of armor +1. If we can't use any of it since we already made our characters, can we sell it off for BP or is selling it all suppose to be where our level 4 starter gold came from? Cause hell, even i didn't realize there was that much stuff.

Rory Ward |

Yes.
Edit:it's a bard ninja. Those magic items were ether sold to get your current wealth or weren't there in the first place. Or were replaced with your current gear.
figured as much. Can we keep the stag lord's helm as flavor though? I think it would look really cool in either the bar or inn... preferably bar or something. Whichever is actually getting made.

DM: Nice! You may want to put that list up on the Campaign Info page and update it regularly. For completeness' sake, you may want to add the NPC kingdom rulers to the list as well. I remember little more than the names of some of them.
I would really appreciate it if you could add in an Events section to that page too, one that highlights important events from the first module, as a reminder for those of us who haven't played through it, or have difficulty remembering important parts. (It doesn't necessarily have to be a log of future events after that, that's what the thread is for.)
Everybody: I'm re-uploading a new map, which has all the new information included (except for monsters and traps, which were presumably cleared). For now, I'm listing plants as resources.
Adular: How come I don't see you putting more down on the downtime calendar? You don't have to wait for projects to finish before you can start new ones.

Adular |

DM...other NPCs you might want to make note (And may not):
Alyssia - Warrioress with secrets, wandering the area for some reason
Selene- Actress and romantic interest of Rory
Puthgus- Teenage Male, half orc, acolyte (Cleric) to the temple of Gorum
Bross and Hoss Bosmen, two Brothers, One Lanky, the other Stocky. Teenage trouble makers but not all bad.
I was actually picturing the Bosmen brothers as sons of the Blacksmith since we have one in town but they could just as easily be the sons of a porter or something.

Yep. From the rules: You must be in the settlement at the start of the construction or recruitment period, but don't have to spend any of your downtime days to begin construction or recruitment. In effect, you have to be present only to give the order to begin.
You may also want to fill those missed days in the calendar with gold and capital that you should have been earning.

Adular |

That I've been collecting, but unfortunately the calender gives me fits 8 times out of ten when I try especially if everyone else has done so. There is just not enough room.
So I've had him earning Influence and Magic on Sunday and Moonday, and Labor/Goods the other days for the most part. Sometimes I'll make a note like '5th day of' on one of the days that I can actually fit something on a calender day, or I use the bottom of the Calender.

Adular |

Yeah, that's what I am reading here. If I earn 2 labor in a day, I have to pay 20 gold for it (Which really makes me wonder about the term 'earn' because despite being 'half' what you'd pay for purchasing it flat out, if you still have to have cash, it's not exactly much of a barter/ trade but them's the rules it seems).
Frankly, If I had known the rules better at the start, I would have tried to bump up my skills more because clerics are not great in the skill department to begin with.

Ravingdork |

The absolute worst case scenario is using your class abilities instead of skills. For that the rules say the following:
Class Abilities: You can use a class ability to provide a service in the settlement to earn capital. For example, a fighter could train a noble's child in swordplay, a cleric could heal townsfolk, and so on. Choose either one type of capital (Goods, Influence, Labor, or Magic) or gp, and attempt a check (1d20 + your character level + your highest ability modifier — 5). You may take 10 on this check. Treat this check as your skill check result for using skilled work.
Using class abilities is less efficient than performing skilled work; this represents the fact that many classes' abilities don't have much direct benefit to a community. As with skilled work, the GM may rule that your abilities are unsuitable and reduce the amount earned by half.

Ravingdork |

For simplicity, you can simply earn gold until you have enough to cover the cost of earning capital, then you earn all the capital, then you say "go" to your construction workers as you start all over again.
I suggest you do this until you've filled up all those empty days on the calendar. You know, catch up.
EDIT: Also, let's set colors for ourselves when we use the calendar, so we can more easily pick out our own entries from the others.
I call black.

Adular |

I had red in the first month so I'll take red. and we can all only take one row each. there should be four rows per calendar day so it should work out. If an event happens at your place, you use that row.
There should be, but I've had a lot of those 'rows' take up half the darn date, I don't mean with writing, I mean the little table is a huge space.

Ravingdork |

Then try using shorthand. You almost never need more than one line. And even if you do, let it run off. The information can still be read by clicking on the cell.
In fact, we should probably standardize it for even easier reading:
EXAMPLES
Adular +3.2gp (Adular has earned 3gp and 2sp.)
Riva +6 labor, +1 influence ($) (Riva has earned 6 labor and purchased 1 influence, the purchasing being denoted by the $ sign.)
Rory +4 influence, rules (Rory rules for a day, and earns 4 influence.)
Eldric +7gp (Eldric earns 7gp.)
When adding a room or team to a building, list the building like so:
Library +vault (began construction on a vault for the library)
Tavern +common room (began construction on a common room for the tavern)
Arena -guards (2) (Fired two teams of guards)
Inn =common room (Common room at the inn has finished construction)
etc.
When a new building is ready to be added to the kingdom stats, make mention of it in the super long lines at the bottom of the month.
There's plenty of space. You can even copy and paste redundant information from one day to the next, as I have done, just know that the cell formatting follows the text. You always want the new location to be the same size as the old location, or it will mess up the formatting (in which case, just use Ctrl + Z as many times as needed to undo the mistake, or use Ctrl + Shift + Z to redo it).
In addition to color-coding our entries, we should probably stick to the same general lines of each day. There is one short one at the top, and three longer ones in the middle and bottom.
Perhaps we should do it in reverse alphabetical order with Rory getting the top line of any given day (being ruler), followed by Riva (being next most prominent politician), followed by Eldric and Adular.
EDIT: I strongly encourage everybody to go back and clean up the calendar with these new standards.

Ravingdork |

I've moved my downtime event to the bottom-most line of the month to make room for you.
We should probably do that more often, and leave the shorter lines to the gains and losses, as shown above. No player gets more than one line on a given day moving forward.
In the meantime, I clear up some additional space for you elsewhere as well.

Adular |

Well, Sarenith is going to be all about recouping gold. Average of 3.4 per day (Taking 10 on healing, +10 for the skill, +19 for temple(Includes a dojo) -5 for Taxes total of 34 on roll, so 3.4gp a day.
I'm assuming the bar that is complete isn't going to help yet because the arena itself still isn't built.
