Well, Erastil's temple is likely progressing, but a shrine in the city proper might be a good idea. Poor Adular is going to feel a definite ant-chaos bias with all these lawful types though ;)

Another thing did occur to me. If we want to encourage 'good' behavior from the kobolds, a Shrine to Apsu, God of Good Dragons (IIRC) might appeal to the little fellows. It would be an unusual one, and don't get me wrong, Adular still hopes to convert a good portion of kobolds TO Gorum, but it might be do a better job of shifting the Kobolds from LE

We might not have a choice for a month or two while we build up our BP. Our treasury is really low right now. If we fail two more Economy checks we will be completely broke.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Check out the Kingmaker Map I just uploaded (you can use the old link). I spent $11 purchasing the Kingmaker Map Pack and a great many hours stitching the pages together so that we may have a great, high resolution map without markings left over from other peoples' previous Kingmaker campaigns.

Enjoy.

Male Human Bard 4

Nice! Looks really good.

The inner voice within your ear

New Kingdom Stat sheet is up. I will be taking the web site down as soon as I get into work tomorrow morning.

Male Human

Thanks, Ravingdork! Really appreciate the work you put into this.

Agreed. Really glad you are playing in this game.

Male Human

Blah, need to get some sleep. Gotta get up at 5 for work. I'll try to check out the gameplay before I head off in the morning, and make any necessary posts.

Night, all!

The inner voice within your ear

Looks like some of the files are queued up in a long line. You might not actually see the new map or kingdom sheet until morning. :(

Crafting a pair of Traveler's Any-Tools during Desnas; one for me, and one for Rory's birthday (automatic success thanks to the +4 bonus from the library). Am considering one for the spy, who would likely benefit quite a lot from having one.

I'm heading off to bed. DM, can you get the next month's checks underway so I have something fun to wake up to? Also, let us know which month it's for from now on. Hopefully, that will help avoid confusion.

Desnus

Upkeep Phase
Step 1—Determine Kingdom Stability: Attempt a Stability check. If you succeed, Unrest decreases by 1 (if this would reduce Unrest below 0, add 1 BP to your Treasury instead). If you fail by 4 or less, Unrest increases by 1; if you fail by 5 or more, Unrest increases by 1d4.
Stability: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (5) + 18 = 23
made it barely. I thought there was some unrest after last month.

Step 2—Pay Consumption: Subtract your kingdom's Consumption from the kingdom's Treasury. If your Treasury is negative after paying Consumption, Unrest increases by 2.
Pay 3 Bp

Step 3—Fill Vacant Magic Item Slots: If any of your settlement districts have buildings that produce magic items (such as a Caster's Tower or Herbalist) with vacant magic item slots, there is a chance of those slots filling with new items (see the Magic Items in Settlements section).
filled with
Wand of Magic Missile (1st) (37 of 50 charges)
Arcane Scroll (Command Undead (150 gp)) (total 150 gp)
Step 4—Modify Unrest: Unrest increases by 1 for each kingdom attribute (Economy, Loyalty, or Stability) that is a negative number.
not this turn

Edict Phase

The Edict phase is when you make proclamations on expansion, improvements, taxation, holidays, and so on.

Step 1—Assign Leadership: Assign PCs or NPCs to any vacant leadership roles or change the roles being filled by particular PCs or closely allied NPCs (see Leadership Roles).

Step 2—Claim and Abandon Hexes: For your kingdom to grow, you must claim additional hexes. You can only claim a hex that is adjacent to at least 1 other hex in your kingdom. Before you can claim it, the hex must first be explored, then cleared of monsters and dangerous hazards (see Steps 2 and 3 of Founding a Settlement for more details). Then, to claim the hex, spend 1 BP; this establishes the hex as part of your kingdom and increases your kingdom's Size by 1. Table: Improvement Edicts tells you the maximum number of hexes you can claim per turn.

You may abandon any number of hexes to reduce your kingdom's Size (which you may wish to do to manage Consumption). Doing so increases Unrest by 1 for each hex abandoned (or by 4 if the hex contained a settlement). This otherwise functions like losing a hex due to unrest (see Step 4 of the Upkeep Phase).

Step 4—Build Terrain Improvements: You may spend BP to build terrain improvements like Farms, Forts, Roads, Mines, and Quarries (see Terrain Improvements).

You may also prepare a hex for constructing a settlement. Depending on the site, this may involve clearing trees, moving boulders, digging sanitation trenches, and so on. See the Preparation Cost column on Table: Terrain and Terrain Improvements to determine how many BP this requires.

Table: Improvement Edicts tells you the maximum number of terrain improvements you can make per turn.

Step 5—Create and Improve Settlements: You may create a settlement in a claimed hex (see Founding a Settlement). Table: Improvement Edicts tells you the maximum number of settlements you can establish per turn.

You may a building in any settlement in your kingdom. The list of available building types begins. When a building is completed, apply its modifiers to your kingdom sheet. Table: Improvement Edicts tells you the maximum number of buildings you can construct in your kingdom per turn. The first House, Mansion, Noble Villa, or Tenement your kingdom builds each turn does not count against that limit.

Step 6—Create Army Units: You may create, expand, equip, or repair army units (see Mass Combat).

Step 7—Issue Edicts: Select or adjust your edict levels (see Edicts).

Income Phase

During the Income phase, you may add to or withdraw from the Treasury as well as collect taxes.

Step 1—Make Withdrawals from the Treasury: The kingdom-building rules allow you to expend BP on things related to running the kingdom. If you want to spend some of the kingdom's resources on something for your own personal benefit (such as a new magic item), you may withdraw BP from the Treasury and convert it into gp once per turn, but there is a penalty for doing so.

Each time you withdraw BP for your personal use, Unrest increases by the number of BP withdrawn. Each BP you withdraw this way converts to 2,000 gp of personal funds.
Do you want to again?

Step 2—Make Deposits to the Treasury: You can add funds to a kingdom's Treasury by donating your personal wealth to the kingdom—coins, gems, jewelry, weapons, armor, magic items, and other valuables you find while adventuring, as long as they are individually worth 4,000 gp or less. For every full 4,000 gp in value of the deposit, increase your kingdom's BP by 1.

If you want to donate an item that is worth more than 4,000 gp, refer to Step 3 instead.

Step 3—Sell Expensive Items for BP: You can attempt to sell expensive personal items (that is, items worth more than 4,000 gp each) through your kingdom's markets to add to your Treasury. You may sell one item per settlement district per turn. You must choose the settlement where you want to sell the item, and the item cannot be worth more than the base value of that settlement.

To sell an item, divide its price by half (as if selling it to an NPC for gp), divide the result by 4,000 (rounded down), and add that many BP to your Treasury.

You cannot use this step to sell magic items held or created by buildings in your settlements; those items are the property of the owners of those businesses. (See Magic Items in Settlements for more information on this topic.)

Step 4—Collect Taxes: Attempt an Economy check, divide the result by 3 (round down), and add a number of BP to your Treasury equal to the result.

economy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30
gain 10 Bp

No event this month.

The inner voice within your ear

I don't think we are going to do anything with our BP or change any of our roles or edicts during Desnus. With only 3 BP during the Edict phase and no in-game foreknowledge that we will get 10 more, there just aren't a lot of good options available. We need to save up a reserve.

The consumption disappeared once the shrine was upgraded to a temple, if I remember correctly.

Also guys, Sarenith is going to be our last month with the Kobold Baby Boom event. After that our economy is going to drop by two points, something we may want to prepare for. Also, with our scaleless population continuously growing, and the kobold baby boom over, I think our kobold problem will resolve itself and things will begin to stabilize on its own.

Male Human Bard 4

Woooo! Ten BP! We're not dead yet!

The inner voice within your ear

Should we buy a house during Desnus? It won't do much except to increase the scaleless population, which may help with the perceived power imbalances among the people.

Hurry up and write in your Desnus downtime activities so that we can get on with Sarenith today too.

Male Human Bard 4

lol. Alright, alright. I think i'm gonna start getting some supplies to build a hospital about halfway through the month. I need to map out everything i need for that first. Give me about an hour and a half and I"ll have it up.

edit: as for what to build. House is good, but part of me wants to splurge on a little more and get maybe a mill. twice as much BP but we get a +1 to ecomomy, stability, and +1 production to the settlement.

Alright, a sawmill then. It won't do anything for the population, but it helps in other ways. DM take note, we now earn +1 BP during every turn when we attempt to collect taxes during the income phase.

Male Human Bard 4

cool. That's my vote, at least. Dunno when we'll see the others, probably later tonight and we might be in the next month by then.

Male Human Bard 4

And Gozran is up to date and i have the completion for the rooms marked on Sarenith. i think its funny that the storefront finishes before the infirmary, but that's good so that way its already set up when the infirmary opens. Once the hospital opens, i'm going to hire a doctor to run it for me. I'm not concerned with making gold off it.

The inner voice within your ear

Kingdom website is dead. DM, would you please replace the Excel Kingdom Sheet link with the new PDF one that I've linked to above?

Just be careful, it is entirely possible to LOSE gold if you don't have enough bonuses to support your manager.

Male Human Bard 4

I did the math already and with the doctor taking ten, the hospital will make at the very least 5.2 gold (though probably more depending on what stat he adds to the check) a day and he costs me 5 gold a day. I was going to add a kitchen if i didn't break even, i may still do that anyway.

Male Elf Paladin-3

I was actually considering a mill (Though I was thinking more of flour) since we have water to power such and it would be cheap. Sawmill sounds very useful for what we need if it will bump up BP

Male Human Bard 4

Both give us +1 to stability and while the sawmill doesn't give us the +1 economy, i will give us +1 bp when we collect taxes. What i don't know if that's regardless if we pass the stability check or not...

Male Human Bard 4

wait... crap. I've been forgetting about the taxation doc to my theater. Welp, time to go retcon that money lose...

edit: turns out i'm sixty gold poorer than a i thought...

I'm pretty certain we get it regardless.

Yeah, I did that a month or two ago. Had to redo a bunch of the math. Fortunately, it didn't effect any of my projects at the time since I had a small surplus, but man, I was shocked at how much it took out of my pocket.

I'm gonna' be dropping taxes down to nothing just as soon as we can afford to.

Desnus downtime events

Stolen Books in the library 3rd Thieves have stolen several of your most important books! The Library gains the broken condition until it is repaired or the stolen books are recovered (in which case the GM should create an encounter suitable for your level to represent the thieves).

The stags Head inn is Talk of the town 5th
Your Inn is a beacon of safety and warmth, and the business you've been doing has earned you a growing reputation in the surrounding settlements. If you succeed at a DC 25 Diplomacy or Perform check, you steer the rumors favorably to increase business, and for 2d6 days, the building gains a +10 bonus on its first check to generate capital each day.

Male Human Bard 4

Ha, i was wrong. Rory's Irish. but yeah, babynames.com is a great site for character names. Surenames is a little more difficult. For Rory, since he's a bastard he doesn't carry his father's name. So, borrowing the idea from Game of Throne Bastards (each kingdom has a collective bastard surname. Snow for the north, stone for the east, sand for the south, etc.) and figured since Rory was the bastard son of one of the keep's workers and was also raised alongside the nobles' children, he was almost like a castle ward, ergo having Ward as the collective surname for the keep's bastards.

edit: Tarka Firefang is yours then, DM. Let me know if you need anymore help brainstorming names and I'll give you some more tips, though it will predominantly be "babynames.com" and plugging "x nationality surenames" into google and seeing what comes up.

With our castle and the newly constructed temple and theater, the following buildings can now be built for half their normal amount of BP:

Brothel/dance hall (same thing, got errata'd at some point), exotic artisan, graveyard, inn, monument, noble villa, park, shrine, tavern, town hall

I think that some of them should be pursued in coming months, such as that inn or a tavern, once we get our BP up. That town hall looks promising as well, since it ups everything, cheapens other important buildings, and give the people a way to be heard.

Question for the DM (And forgive me if you've answered this) but does the half costs apply even if it's our own down time resources and not BP being used?

Male Human Bard 4

I asked that already too and ravingdork said no. True its ravingdork, and not dm, but... I dunno anymore

The inner voice within your ear

There's too much room for abuse to allow for that if you ask me. By allowing the downtime rules in the first place, you are already getting most buildings for 1/4 to 1/8 of what it would cost in BP.

To want more than that is just being greedy if you ask me.

The inner voice within your ear

Holding off on my Sarenith downtime stuff until I finish playing out this stolen book mess.

If you guys would be so kind as to PM me the most awesome portraits of your PCs that you can find, I will post them as "Lesson Excerpts" in the gameplay thread. If you wish, you can use my art gallery as a resource.

Male Human Bard 4

Good god man that's a lot of pictures and there awesome one's at that. But the one i think is best for Rory is this. I kid, I really like one i found in your giant folder but I don't know how to show you which one it is. I guess i could just download it and reupload it and give you the link or whatever, but that seems like a lot more work than needed.

um, its image 387 in the heroes folder... its name is mtg__mentor_of_the_meek_by_algenpfleger-d48luru if that helps. Its a pic of a guy with a rapier teaching other people to sword fight. I figured it would be a nice picture of Rory teaching others how to stage fight.

The inner voice within your ear

The file name works fine.

Male Human Bard 4

I'm still looking in case i find anything better? How did you accumulate such a collection? Every time i try to search stuff I get either crap or WoW characters.

Have to agree that Halving the cost for downtime buildings would be going far to far. Although considering how close you guys just came to kingdom ruin I wonder how most games work without downtime.

Male Human Bard 4

during my search for a better picture for Rory, i found an awesome picture for Adular... assuming he has a beard. it's titled the golden daniel by brenthollowell and it's image 783 in case he wants to check it out himself.

It seems I have overlooked a tiny little smidgeon of a detail. Is she a kobold? If so, she may well be old enough to clean the room and understand Riva's meaning.

She was certainly old enough to do some damage.

Riva going nuts around town and offering rewards and the like when it turns out to be a simple matter of a child delinquent...actually shows her personality quite well.

Who was accusing?

Yeah, DM made her up to be a possible kobold to add to the council as she often acts independent of Sootscale. scroll back up in the gameplay thread a little, still on page 3 i think, and you'll see us discussing her briefly along with me berating DM on his character naming abilities, lol.

And here I thought it was a love interest for your character or something.

Can you just imagine Rory marrying a kobold? lol.

Maybe it is just that I had a bad day, but given both Rory and I were asking for a rules clarification of the DM, it certainly seemed like you were accusing both of us of being greedy.

But I'm glad to hear that wasn't your intent.
