@Kargas: Don't forget your background skills!
@Flo: We didn't talk about it before. If we have at least four people interested in getting PFS chronicles for Book 1 run in Campaign mode, I'll go ahead and generate them.

Sure! Though technically, I only just joined.

I have a PFS number and would be fine with getting a chronicle sheet, but I am okay either way.

Kargas Stormscar |

I'd be fine with getting PFS chronicle credit but don't feel super strongly about it

Guiness is leveled up, with improved tank-ability. Is there a loot list?
Guiness is so happy to have been rescued, he hasn't even considered that he might get a share in the adventuring spoils...

Floredana Mandulescu |

Looks like at least four people to me! What level range is it for?
I thought there was a loot list floating around, but I can't seem to find it...

The level range is 3-5.
Also, this has got to be the 3rd or 4th time that someone has mentioned that someone else started a loot list, but no one has done so yet. One of you guys needs to step up to the plate, or all this loot will just vanish into the ether :>

![]() |

I can get started on it, at least from when we started Thistletop...unless someone else wants to step up...

GM Cellion |

Since loot got reset right when I started GMing, its just Thistletop you have to itemize.

So, here is the in-progress Loot Sheet .
We will need to make sure people claim their items, then I assume we can sell what we don't want at half price? I am not sure what the party had agreed to before my character joined.
GM Cellion, please check over it and see if I misinterpreted/missed/valued wrong anything.

Kargas Stormscar |

Thanks for taking point on this, Guiness!
I sent you a request for editing privileges.

You are welcome.
People with the link should be able to edit it. I made it in Excel, so the formulas may or may not have translated well.

Yep, sell at half price is correct. Everything looks good right now Guiness, though I'll have to take a closer look at the prices tomorrow morning.

![]() |

Sounds good. Opening up the spreadsheet may help seeing the values, since they are broken down inside the formula—for example, 7x MW Horsechoppers “=7*(10+300)”...or quantity x (weapon price + MW price). That should make it easier to understand/correct prices.
I think I left off the crab carapace, but that is of nominal value and Guiness has claimed it.

GM Cellion |

*thumbs up* values look right to me!
I'll added a link to the loot log to the top of the page.

![]() |

Good. I wasn't sure about the "warding star" since the phrasing suggested it sold for 2k--I assumed that was retail and if we were to sell it as loot we would get half.
Now we just need people to put their name by the items they want that say "keep?", and then we can change the other items to sell instead of "keep?" and calculate a final total sell value.
I am making some assumptions here--how does the party want to separate the loot? Are there items that multiple people want & we should have some method for deciding?
- I am assuming we are keeping healing potions.
- I am thinking we should have Colvyn take what goblin-size armor and weapons he wants, plus the cloak of resistance, since they are all his size and we have nobody else in the party of "small" size.
- Not sure about the +1 bastard sword or the bows, someone should claim these or we can sell them.
- Warding star seems pretty nice and gives bonus hp 1x/day (1d10+5 for 5 hours). Thinking someone should have that.

Thanks Guiness!
I think keeping healing stuff and consumables in general (that the party can use) is a good call (so scrolls, potions, wands, etc.).
Colvyn getting dibs on small items only makes sense to me. Though IIRC wondrous items resize for the wearer, so it shouldn't matter that the Cloak of Resistance was from a Goblin (besides how the GM said it looked).
Five hours of what looks like false life looks nice. While casters normally use that spell, I think it would likely serve our frontline even better. If someone wants it, don't be shy!
As far as how to distribute loot, I don't think we ever really decided. I recall there being two strong opinions (which I will briefly summarize from memory, please correct me):
I propose that we split the gold evenly after everything is sold off. If someone wants an item, they can have it immediately*, but, if everyone agrees, I'd like some sort of gold to be subtracted (the cost to have crafted it?) from their share for doing so (personally, I don't think things like artifacts/found consumables should be included. IMO the goal is not to punish the characters who are a prime fit for unique AP items). I have no issue with characters owing the party and have no intention of holding it over someone's head or anything like that. This way everyone gets their goodies, but we aren't leaving a character(s) in the dust because AP's tend to have thematic loot.
*I don't feel strongly about a method for resolving who gets an item two+ people want. Maybe: If something is better suited for a class or character's build, that character gets higher priority. If we can't suss out some sort of priority for an item, the players can roll off for it?
Thoughts? To me, what is ultimately important is that we are all at least ok (but ideally better than ok!) with whatever method we choose. Speak up so we can work out the best method for our group!
Unrelated to the above, but relevant to loot right now: When Guiness was rolled up and inserted into the game, did he come in with 3rd level gold? GM, is the stuff we just received our next "level" of gold, or did Guiness come in already having earned what we were supposed to get from Thistletop? While we saved Guiness from a Boomy death, it doesn't seem right to deny the character gold if levelwise he really should be getting it IMO.
Ran out of time for a gameplay post, but I'll get one up in a few hours!

![]() |

Guiness’ starting funds were 3000 gp, or level 3 wealth for PC wealth by level.
I have seen many different ways to distribute treasure. The fundamental issue is that the optimal distribution of items for party capability is rarely objectively “fair” to the individual PC’s.
- a “distribute items then split leftover evenly” method encourages use of found items, even if they are not perfectly suited. I have seen this abused by people who always would take the most expensive item, then sell it at half price for themselves to keep the proceeds for themselves.
- a “divide total sell value evenly, then ‘buy’ items of interest at sell cost” is much fairer, but it runs the risk of a person wanting a pricey found item ending up without beer money or “owing” the party for a while, which can be difficult in character. It usually ends up with selling a lot of the found items for coin, then the standard items that help everyone (like amulets, rings, etc) get fought over since they can be “bought” at half price.
In short, people of goodwill can make it work pretty easily, and people who want to take advantage of a system can make it not fun for everyone. This can be made easier or harder based on the attitude of the character you are playing.
- As for Guiness, he values his life far more than any of these trinkets. As the party saved him, he is going to lay claim to very little, but be thankful for anything he is given that can help keep him alive in the future...

GM Cellion |

As Guiness mentions, we started with a budget of 3000 gp vs. the 2500 gp everyone else had. I figured you guys would hit a couple of encounters before you reached him and therefore pick up some additional gold that would be split between you. It didn't end up happening that way, so you may want to adjust any sale split to compensate (though the gold difference here is unlikely to make a huge difference in the long run).
As you see from the loot log, Thistletop has quite a bit of treasure to go around :>

Rig Veda |

I can finally access the internet! Yay! Ok, so I'll get Rig leveled up asap. Not too worried about the loot (thanks Guiness) as long as I can find another damn longsword. If someone in town doesn't mind trading the bastard sword maybe?
@4th: +1BAB, +1R/W, +1Con (so +1F), bonus to con gives me a lot more HP, picked up a few new spells, heroism and bladed dash

Floredana Mandulescu |

Ok, fair enough. What about a general "don't be an a!~*!##" rule about loot and every 3-4 levels we do a fast and dirty run down of the value of what each PC has (the spread sheet might even be able to do that for us in real time). Then we can just slide any relatively poor characters some extra gold/better priority and call it a day.
Again, just throwing stuff out there! As long as we are all happy with whatever we choose, that is most important to me.

What was that I just heard? Guiness wants to give each of the 5 other players 100 gp out of his share for rescuing him? I wonder...how did he come up with that number?

Floredana Mandulescu |

I don’t feel very strong about if we summarize NPC interactions or RP it out. Another game I’m in did a little training/downtime montage to let the players give a brief overview of what their character would be doing before moving forward. Just throwing that out there. GM, how much in game time will this in between part be?
Flo wanted to give Father Zantus the key for safe keeping until our characters feel ready to deal with whatever is in the tower. She wants to see Quink to tell him about what we found and to see if anything he has read/learned gives him an idea about what exactly is in there.

Kargas Stormscar |

Maybe a quick summary of what we want to accomplish over a couple of weeks? I envision Kargas telling himself he'll definitely go looking for the Sandpoint Devil tomorrow, but today Ameiko asked for help with _____. She still just lost her dad, so he wants to be supportive as much as he knows how.
He might even continue on working for the town guard to pay for his rooms, if they'll have him on.
We may or may not have an ongoing rivalry with the smuggler/crime boss guy too, right?

GM Cellion |

You'll have two weeks of downtime before the next call to action surfaces.
I don't remember reading about this smuggler, do you have a link to the last interaction with him, Kargas?

![]() |

Guiness will want to do some metalworking (take 10 for a 21) to make platinum mementoes for the other 5 members of the group as a thanks for saving him. These will use 10 pp and end up (for simplicity) still being worth 100 gp. With DM approval, these items can be used to identify the bearer as someone who has done a great service on behalf of the Janderhoff Dwarves (Guiness’ home region).
For loot items, the false life/resistance bonus warding sihedron may make sense for him, but he will want nothing to do with it as it reminds him of his demon dreams. Maybe that would be better for Kargas and Guiness can have the Amulet of natural armor instead.
If his dreams are haunted, Guiness will want to go back and confront the Demon Dog after the smart people have done their research. If he no longer has the dreams, he will let sleeping dogs lie.
In the unlikely event he has enough loot in his share, Guiness will want to get his hammer enchanted so it will be effective against shadows (and other things with DR/magic).
Guiness will be profuse in his apologies to the owner of the Rusty Dragon for failing to deliver the Dwarven Stout, so he will perform jobs for her—whatever she needs.
He also isn’t sure if the others want him to stay in the group or not (so that may be a RP opportunity—is he a rescued mercenary now going his own way, or a member of the Sandpoint 4+?), so he will keep his eyes open for job opportunities.

![]() |

For ease of spending, Guiness could instead craft a token of nominal monetary value and just hand over a pouch with 100 gp instead...

Kargas Stormscar |

It was quite a while ago, while the party was going door-to-door goblins searching. Colvyn noticed a warm candle and Rig won a dance off that was actually a secret code?
I'll try to find the page.

Kargas Stormscar |

Found it!
Jubrayl Vhiski, the encounter was unfriendly but not outright hostile, and we got some strong hints that there's smuggling or other activity going on. Starts 2/3 through page 21.

Floredana Mandulescu |

Fun fact: if you right click the time/time ago a post was made, you can copy the link to that exact post!
GM, which thread do you want our downtime posts in?
Guiness, speaking for just myself, I think a 100gp symbol of a Dwarven clan is like a bajillion times more valuable than 100gp in hand!

![]() |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Given Rig's post, I thought Guiness might be able to work the memento into a metal item you already have, if you like.
Maybe for Floredana he could make a very nice sheath with the platinum memento inlaid on the outward facing side for that ocean-themed dagger she has.
For Kellek he could put it on a nice steel scroll tube?
Colvyn might want it on a quiver or inlaid on his bow?
Kargas...he may just want it loose in his pocket so he can wing it at Guiness occasionally.

![]() |

Still a lot of good items on the loot chart with "Keep?" next to them. Listed are the items which we may or may not sell that are worth 500 gp+
Colvyn 2310 Small +1 Shortsword
Keep? 700 1x masterwork composite (STR +3) longbow
Keep 1000 Cloak of Resistance +1
Sell? 1350 A +1 breastplate (modified to bare the midriff)
Keep? 2335 A +1 bastard sword
Sell? 600 A masterwork composite longbow (Str rating 2)
Kellek 570 Wand of Magic Missile (38 charges)
Sell? 716 2x Masterwork Kukri with Ancient Continual Flames
Keep? 2000 A fine silver medallion with a seven pointed star.
Kargas 2000 Amulet of Natural Armor +1
Keep? 1000 Small Size Cloak of Resistance +1
(note values are retail, would sell for half).
We should definitely have takers for the cloaks of resistance. It would also be nice to have main warriors with magic weapons (maybe someone could trade the magic bastard sword for a magic axe?). The silver medallion is a +1 resistance bonus and false life every day at CL 5.
- Guiness is not interested in the bows or the revealing armor, and he would rather enchant his hammer (role-playing wise, awaken the enchantments already dormant in the weapon) than have a new magic weapon. He would be interested shields and armor eventually, but think magic shields and (Dwarven) full plate...For the items shown above, the amulet of natural armor (already deferred to Kargas) and the cloak of resistance seem most likely for him.
- So, I can total all the loot sale value and people can buy the items at "wholesale" if that will help people with the loot...

GM Cellion |

OK! I see what you mean Kargas. I'm not 100% sure what your previous GM was planning with Mr. Vhiski, but as far as I'm concerned, he's likely moved on in his smuggling endeavors. :>
Flo, go ahead and start talking about your downtime activities in gameplay. Gameplay is the right place for anything your character is doing (I'd go so far as to say that if its not posted in gameplay, your character didn't do it). That way I can react to all your hijinks and roleplay in gameplay too.

![]() |

I have modified the loot list so you can see all the prices of the items found (both full price and half price as sold). Total for each character (split 6 ways) is 3062.47 gp, suspiciously close to the difference between level 3 gold and level 4 gold...
Anyway, for example, look at Guiness:
3062.47 gp
- 75 gp for 3 CLW potions picked up along the way
- 150 gp for 1 CMW potion also picked up along the way
- 85 gp for a masterwork heavy shield looted
- 500 gp for 5 rewards for saving his life to the other PC's
-2000 gp to get his hammer "awakened" to +1 magic
gives 252.47 gp left over.
Of course, if everyone wants cash, we could miss out on some items, but we could give it a whirl and see if this method works well for us...

Kargas Stormscar |

Actually I think the bow might be a good item for Kargas, for longer-range fighting than javelins allow

Floredana Mandulescu |

Flo already has a cloak and the armor is medium (which she can wear, but movement speed is important to her).
For the +1 armor/weapons, I think it is worth trying to get them exchanged for +1 items we would actually use! Still not something Flo is interested in, but I think that would be highly valuable for y'all!
EDIT: I'd like to put good effort into Flo's vignette but today sucked and I am quickly running out of time for the night :( I will do my best to hash it out tomorrow! Sorry GM -_-

1) After celebration, approach Ameiko and offer sincere apologies for being unable to deliver the Dwarven Stout as was his contract, then offer to make it up to her any way he can be of service.
2) Find the town enchanter / priest / etc. who can "awaken" the magic in his heirloom weapon (spend 2000 gp to get it enchanted to +1).
3) Set up a small metalworking area to make the reward mementos and personalize them to each of the other PC's, giving them as thanks over the course of the 2 weeks (and low-key determining if they want him to stay with the "Sandpoint 4+" or are done with him now that he has been rescued).
I will go ahead and post for #1 in Gameplay with Ameiko, but I need a bit more town info for #2 and #3. To whom should Guiness speak about getting his hammer enchanted, and is there a town Metalworker he could trade some labor for being able to set up in a corner of the shop to make the mementoes? I will post that he is asking around town, unless one of the PC’s is familiar enough with the town to help him out...
He will also want to go with Kargas to bear witness to the great battle with the fearsome Sandpoint Devil.

Colvyn is looking first for a Small Mighty (+1) Composite Long Bow. With his share of the loot, he should have enough to get a magical one.

Guiness, for #2 there are actually no Sandpoint natives skilled enough in the magical arts to enchant weapons and armor! What we can say is that a traveler comes in during the second week of your downtime that is willing to undertake the enchantment for you.

#2 sounds good, especially if it is a Dwarven crafter, as Guiness thinks of his hammer as needing to have its capabilities “awakened” as he gains in power and experience, not that it is just a regular weapon that needs to have enchantments added to it.
#3 sounds good too. Guiness will spend some time buffing out his armor and shield, including some cosmetic adjustments to the shield so it matches the armor better. He will spend most of the time in the 2 weeks crafting special mementoes for his rescuers valued at 100 gp each in raw materials.
He is interested in bearing witness to Kargas’s ritual battle. He will promise to leave the Sandpoint Devil to Kargas unless the big half-orc falls, but he will help to eliminate any other threats along the way so Kargas can be “fresh” for his battle.
