Okay, welcome all!

Just to recap & expand a bit on chargen:

Level 1 characters
15pt Ability Score buy
Maximum Hit Points at level 1
2 Traits, 1 being a campaign Trait
Make sure you read the players guide (free download from this site) to be sure you understand the context of what in the nine hells is going on!
Make sure to choose a relevant port of embarkation - along with the player's guide info it'll help everyone figure out who's known who for how long.

First posts:
Feel free to start posting as soon as you have an idea of your character's appearance, mannerisms, and backstory. Crunch will need to be sorted, of course, but any fiddly details or fine tuning can be worked out without having to prevent you jumping into stuff (unless you're planning on starting a fight in your first post or something equally insane...).
Try to get a description of your character into your first post, rather than just leaving it on your character sheet - it makes it easier to read the thread and picture the game world for all concerned. Doing this prose-style works best, but any way you want is fine.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

I believe that Bandy is good to go; could I perhaps get a sanity check on him, please?

The Exchange

Looks fine to me at a glance. If no one minds, I'm also happy if you guys want to check each others' numbers and assorted crunch, to make sure I don't miss anything vital.

Marik is still short two languages and I was wondering what, if anything, the group thinks would be helpful?

Heres what he knoews so far:
Aklo, Azlant, Common, Draconic, Elven, & Polyglot

Infernal... Are you scared now? ;)

Oh, forgot to say to all, but in case it's not obvious and you haven't already: create an alias with your character info on it (as seems to be standard practice in these parts), please.

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

Greetings all.

Glad to be aboard. As this is my first PbP, please excuse any silly questions I may ask. :)

ProfPotts, how do you prefer us to post our stat blocks? Shisa is now a 15 point build using HeroLabs.

The Exchange

If you edit your profile you'll see the site's set up so you can fill in your Ability Scores and some other stuff, then just list everything else on there too. Take a look at Bandlewick's profile for a good example of what it should look like when you're done (just click on his name above his picture).

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

Thanks. Think I have it fixed now :)

The Exchange

That looks good, Shisa.

At a glance I take it your campaign Trait is 'boarded in Cheliax', right? Which of the three ports did she board at?

Your background document is a zip file which opens as a weird HTML looking thing for me... any chance you could just stick the text in the relevant spoiler on your profile - it'd be a lot easier to read.

Oh, and you've got a listed movement of 20ft there you may want to look at. ;)

Male Human Paladin 2

DiscoDragin here...

Got a little bit of the whole thing done, will work on the gear/personality/appearance in a second..

Heading out for another D&D game, will hit it when I get back!

The Exchange

Aerodus seems to be missing 5 points worth of Ability Scores, not to mention his Racial bonus.

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

Fixed speed and added a text file background. Sorry, original was in Word 2007 docx format.

Shisa boarded (rather quickly) at Corentyn.

Are we missing someone? I only count 5 players right now.

Aerodus
Bandlewick
Marik
Mundin
and
Shisa

Are we expecting a sixth? If not I'm cool running with 5.

Male Human Paladin 2

Did I miss the post about starting gold?

is it roll or average?

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

Not sure overall. Based on where you board the ship, you may have a certain amount of gear. For Shisa, boarding in Cheliax,it was 200gp worth of mundane equipment.

Right I was just wondering.. I doubt my weapons/armor will be counting for the mundane category and was looking for a starting # to go with; will go right now off avg.

Character Information:
[HP: 11]; [Armor Class: 12; Touch: 12; Flat Footed: 10]; [BAB: +0; CMB: +0; CMD: 12]; [Saves: Fortitude: +1; Reflex: +2; Will: +3]; [Initiative: +9]; [Perception: +8]

OK, Marik's crunch should be done. Now just got to finish the fluff.

Just a couple of things:

ProfPotts:

Marik's familiar is not a standard PFRPG familiar. Given his fascination/obsession with the Mwangi Expanse he took a Needletooth dinosaur from Dragon #351 as being a creature native to the area. It is essentially a lizard familiar with a bleed attack of 1 point for one round, other than that and the granted ability of +3 on Stealth checks (Hide actually, since issue #351 is 3.5) in forest or jungle terrain it is exactly like the lizard.
Another is that he created a Masterwork map of the Expanse sometime during his studies using his Craft: Cartography skill. I paid 18 GP's (assuming 55 GP total cost)for the raw materials as per the crafting rules.

Please look him over and see if I missed anything or screwed anything up.

Doh! Post about gold was one of the ones that was eaten by the messageboard monster... But yes, average staring gold for your class (as modified by any relevant Traits). 'Mundane' gear is anything non-magical.

Marik:
I'm not too keen to allow a familiar I don't have the stats for... but there is an Adventure Path-specific familiar you may be interested in: a 'rhamphorhynchus' (a tiny pterosaur) otherwise known as a 'swoop lizard'. As a familiar it adds +2 to your Initiative checks, and has a special ability 'sudden swoop' which allows it to make attacks as part of a flying charge which don't provoke attacks of opportunity due to its' tiny size (and also grants +2 damage to its' bite attack). It's got a fly speed of 40ft and is a high dex type of a thing. It's also native to the area. In fact, if you like, you could start without a familiar and meet one of these things early on - Marik would have the 200gp worth of ritual bits and bobs he needs to do the familiar binding ritual thingy as part of his gear instead of an actual familiar.

As for the masterwork map - an area map has a base cost of 50gp, so a masterwork version is gonna' have a base cost of 100gp, but yes, Marik can have crafted one for a 33gp cost as part of his background.

The Exchange

Marik's spellbook is a bit out. He shouldn't have the 0-level spells from his opposition schools (and even if he did, preparing that Light - being an Evocation cantrip - would take him two of his cantrip slots). He should also only have 7 level 1 spells in there (3 + Int bonus), not the 8 he has at the moment.

The Exchange

Post hat-trick!

By the way, that 200gp of gear from the boarded in Cheliax Trait is 200 additional gp on top of your average starting gp.

Anyone who's forgotten their favoured class bonus, now's the time to remember it!

By the way, APG stuff is fine to use, although I won't be using the Hero Points option.

OK, fixed the spellbook. A combination of changing horses (schools) in mid write-up and late night (I swear I counted seven 1st level spells).

ProfPotts:

If it works better for you, then I can pick up the rhamphorhynchus somewhere on the island.
Goddbye, Nipper. I hardly knew ya.
Also, I dumped some gear to cover the difference for the map.

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

Fixed starting wealth. Also added HTML formatted backstory for ease of reading. :)

Also, newbie question #2.. How do the die rolls work in a PbP? I see the diceroll tag for posting. Not sure of the mechanics. Guidance sought. Thanks.

Male Human Paladin 2

So I can use the extra 200g.. to buy better armor?? AWESOME!

Just had our hosue warming party yesterday. Still recovering but dotting and will finalize Mundin's background, looks and stats

I thought we had an inquisitor....

Maybe im just imagining things (DANG KRAKENS!)

The Exchange

Marik - cool: just remember that you don't have 'all' the 0-level spells in your book, since you don't get those from your opposition schools.

Shisa - if you open the tab 'BBCode tags you can use:' listed under the text box when you write a new post you'll see the format for the board's dice roller. Try a few in this thread to test it out.

Mundin - congrats on the new place! Not sure how you're looking to play the character, but note that as he's written at the moment (with a -3 Charisma penalty and no Intimidate skill) he comes across to people as a joke more than a threat... just in case you're going for the 'tough fighter' type (low Charisma means people see the character as unimpressive and generally pathetic, not mean and scary - that would take high Charisma, or lots of Intimidate).

Aerodus - APG equipment is fine (as is Adventure's Armoury for those who have it). You can't spend your 'bonus' cash on magic stuff, but there's no reason you couldn't spend your base cash on it, if you have enough.

I had to say 'no' to the Inquisitor, as he'd be a 7th (with the swashbuckling rogue). If I'm being honest that's the one class from the APG I feel is kinda' poorly written anyway.

Female Half-Elven Rogue / 2

newbie test :)

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 range test..
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 201d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 melee test
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 perception test

Cool. Thanks. Think I'm set.. at least for now.

Male Human Paladin 2

Alright I think got everything down.

quick question mr DM. would asking the crew about sargava be.. knowledge local or diplomacy (to get them to talk to me?)

thanks, been a lot of work.

Will finish gettign all his skills listed. he's still gonna be gruff and low charisma, but was fairly out of it when i adjusted it early, balanced things out a bit more, with a clear head. sry lol, 1st pbp here as well

Male Human Paladin 2

Also.. perchance I missed this earlier.. but what is the .. proposed posting schedule 1x/2x/3x per day?

The Exchange

What was 'Gather Information' in 3.5 is part of Diplomacy in Pathfinder - that's what you'd use to get people to gossip. Knowledge skills represent what you yourself know (with the occassional bonus if you happen to be in a library or something at the time). On the other hand, since you've been on board for a couple of months, and sailors being sailors, they'll happily have told you all sorts of tall tales about what to expect anyway.

My posting schedule is that I like to get one in a day, at least, sometimes more if people happen to post fast & I've nothing to do but veg in front of my PC, but generally one a day. Since people are in scattered time zones on these things expecting more than that really cuts down your potential pool of players (or just starts to get bias against folks who don't live in the same time zone you do). But I try not to be a git about this stuff - post when you can, and if you have a known 'posting break' coming up try to let everyone know.

Male Human Paladin 2

Next question: how do you feel about paladin detect evil? First paladin and while i don't want to abuse it, it would definetly give aerodus peace of mind if he scanned the ship while on patrol for his ghost krakens, invisible sea trolls, and boatsinking gremlins.

Also would he purchase of a hot suit(from apg ) be viable? Seeing as I am going to be the heavy armor guy in the jungle...

The Exchange

You may want to check the Detect Evil spell text before you go too far with the character - using it 'at will' doesn't mean 'instantaneously' - it still takes a standard action to initiate, and concentration to maintain (which takes a standard action each round). Being a paladin he's also got the option to take a move action to focus on one thing, but for general 'scan mode' it takes the usual three rounds of concentrating on an area to detect the details. Being a cone-shaped emanation that means it takes him 12 rounds (over a minute) to fully scan a 360 degree area, with a 60ft radius. It also only detects things with an evil aura - that is to say, it doesn't detect people (or monsters) who just happen to have an evil alignment, unless they're indulging in something with an actively evil intent at that moment (such as attempting a murder, but not stealing cookies). But yes, with all that in mind, there's no reason Aerodus can't 'sweep' the ship on a regular basis. Luckily - no evil yet! :)

The 'hot weather outfit' is really more for desert climates than jungle: a jungle has humidity as well as heat and is a whole different ball game (one not generally suited for robes - dragging around sodden robes which both weigh you down and snag on everything is not the way to go - not to mention being nice insect-traps...). Wearing armour of any sort in a hot environment is insane, but luckily game crunch just awards you a -4 penalty to Fortitude saves to resist heat effects - and it's the same penalty if you're wearing leather, full plate, or just too many clothes. This is, of course, the reason the Endure Elements spell exists.

Male Human Paladin 2

Right, i don't expect him to possess evil sonar. But if those shipsinking gremlins are up to no good, this sea fearing, armored anchor would like to catch them in the act.

Dang invisible krakens with their mind tricks!

Thanks for the info on the hot suit, druid will be my new best friend.

Male Human Paladin 2

Also let me apologize ahead of time if i seem over zealous (impossible for a paladin) got a smartphone which let's me php in spare moments at work.

male dwarf 2 weapon Fighter 1

Think i messed up on ability point buy, better double check me lol. I'm so used to having a sheet in front of me, i'm gonna go print on out and then copy from there to the profile, less errors on my part that way

Male Human Paladin 2

Since.. its gozreh worship; what time of day is it? Assuming there is some light left as sailors are worried about clouds.

The Exchange

Mundin's Ability Scores add up fine, but note that his Charisma modifier is -2 (not -1 as his skills would indicate).

Time of day is... 'day' in a nice abstract sense. To be honest we're still in the 'getting to know you' introductory phase. In the interests of fairness I'll wait until Friday before jumping onto the plot train with both feet, since it was last Friday I agreed to run the game, and a week should be enough for our swashbuckler to show interest if he's ever going to. So, if anyone needs any last minute character adjustments this is your last chance. Otherwise just keep up the excellent role-play guys!

By the way, Aerodus, if you want the druid to be your best friend, maybe you shouldn't blow off his religious services... ;)

Male Human Paladin 2

In my defense (and desire to not spend the entire ap fatigued) i was meditating! Or patrolling for those dang gremlins. Also apparently everyone gets the spell. Around what time friday? Gmt... i normally run a kingmaker game on friday late in the day, so i may be slow in responding. (Smiting party is very demanding work.)

Also if the swashbuckler doesn't show, will we be recruiting a sixth?

You know you want to start it up sooner!

The Exchange

Um... no time in particular: pbp means we all get to play together even in spread out time zones without someone having to be at the keyboard at 3 in the morning... but it also means it's a pretty slow way to play. Being the first to post after a DM post shouldn't be any advantage, neither should being the last to post be a disadvantage. In critical game situations (like a lot of combat situations) I generally like to wait for everyone to have a say, but will usually move on if someone hasn't been able to post for more than a day.

And no, if swashbuckler doesn't show then I won't be looking for a sixth - it was only six in the first place 'cos that's how many had posted interest before I offered to DM: Adventure Paths are generally designed for four, so even five means you've more muscle than the scenarios are assuming.
