GM Hmm |
A secret message could work if you can come up with a good one Juniper.
Kiku Caritas |
PFS Info
Player Name: Ethan
Character Name: Kiku Caritas
Pathfinder Number: 99807-18
Faction: Scarab Sages
Day Job: Perform (dance). She takes 10 for 22 (20 gold).
Juniper Berrythwaite |
In PFS PBP, it's common to roll job rolls early in discussion. Could all of you give me your job rolls if you have them?
Juniper will forgo her Day Job. She is currently serving as steward and seneschal at Fangwood Keep. "The chimneys there require a lot of upkeep. Those damned hobgoblins clogged them all up!"
She earns an extra Prestige Point, but it does not contribute toward her Fame.
I don't know how it's done elsewhere, but the GMs here usually notate that on the sheet as
- +X/+1
Grigorii |
I think Harsk intended to include his second phase roll as Know(geo) when he posted.
He should really try Survival for his third phase, though!

Sweet, thanks! I think I have an idea. I'm also happy to assist others, it is what I built this character for.

Azara is a part time ballroom dance instructor (a holdover from when I needed ranks in Perform-Dance to qualify for Dervish Dance).
I imagine she mostly teaches Salsa...because she's so HOT!

I will be kind and let Harsk do a fresh roll of whatever skill he wishes to try in Phase Two.

If you've ever played Final Fantasy X, you know how Kiku dances :)
She even does it for the same reason, sending the spirits of the dead to rest, because that's the empyreal lord Ashava's whole portfolio.
Grigorii |
@GM: do you mind posting our status and rolling option at the top of the new Gampelay page?
GM Hmm |
Sure, I'll do that in a bit. I'm at the library reference desk and can only do short posts between questions.
I'll begin Phase Three after Kiku has a little more time to talk to her contact.

Shel doesn't have a day job. Her dedication to becoming a Venture Captain doesn't leave time for such fallow pursuits.

Well, I just crapped myself in front of the Council with a two on my roll. Grrr.
Grigorii |
How much troll repellent do we have? Is it safe to assume the town has plenty for purchase?
Juniper Berrythwaite |
I have 1 acid and 1 alchemist fire.
I can cast acid splash all day long, but if I do so I can't buff allies AC.
GM Hmm |
If it is anti-troll or giant, assume that this town has it.
BTW, if anyone wants to earn a hug from the GM, copying and shrinking your minis from Slide TWO to the SW corner of the map on Slide One would be great. North is the top of the map.
You and your allies will be coming in from the SW, so position yourselves accordingly if you'd like. (Map editing is tough on mobile, which is what I'm on right now.)
Hmm
Kiku Caritas |
It's a little more expensive, and possibly harder to find, but Scrolls of Trial of Fire and Acid would be another option. It keeps the regeneration down longer.

That is a good idea. A scroll of that with two castings can be had for 2 Prestige. A single scroll would be 375 gp.
GM Hmm |
@GM: Since you are busy with other stuff, I will make minis for you if you'd like. I can start with an assortment of giants and trolls. Give me the word, and I will put them on my google drive and send you the link. I have a lot of free time today, so I'm happy to help. And then we can get on with the battle tomorrow with a relaxed GM. ;)
That would be great. Thanks!
Basically all I need are square images for the maps. Sorry about not having this prepared, but having out of town guests who decided to throw a part at my house kind of got sprung on me by my spouse. There went my Sunday for game prep...
POOF!
I didn't make my perception roll, so didn't get to act in the surprise round.
You've earned one GM hug.
EDITED to ADD: If we can have four giants with different colors or different colored borders it will make it easier for people to distinguish between them.
Juniper Berrythwaite |

Ok. I'm on it.
GM Hmm |
Thanks again, Juniper!
Harsk, what is Biter's Initiative and Perception? Does Biter have his own avatar?
Juniper Berrythwaite |
@GM Hmm: Here
Let me know if those don't work for whatever reason. I included a circle "base" mini for Juniper also, if you don't mind grabbing that also. I don't know why, but I prefer it.
Thanks. :)
Edit: Also, Hmm, I can't edit on your picture.
GM Hmm |
Hopefully I've fixed that now.
Can you try again?

Is that spell PFS legal since is comes from ththe Monster Codex? If so, Shel will cash in a couple PP for two scrolls of it for the casters.
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
Ok, I bought two scrolls. With a UMD of +16, and my needing a 25 to activate it, it's just a bit better than 50/50 to work. Who else can cast the spell?
Kiku Caritas |
Juniper has it on her spell list, so she would just have to caster level check it. My UMD is only okay, not even as good as yours, Shel.
Yojimbo only has a +10
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Juniper has it on her list. She can almost certainly make the caster level check. The problem is her spell-failure chance. 25%.
I think a better plan is Nefreet's suggestion: wail on the trolls one at a time. When one drops, use acid splash to lower its regeneration and then CdG.

I am new to Google Docs. I will try to open things up. Any idea how I do that? ;)
Meanwhile, I added a slide to your page with all the tokens on it. I also moved my token for Juniper to the first slide and added Juniper's initiative bonus where requested.
Party at Hmm's house! :D
Juniper Berrythwaite |
By the way, if anyone else wants a circular token for their character, I'm happy to make them.
GM Hmm |
Harsk, what is Biter's Initiative and Perception? Does Biter have his own avatar?
I'm going to list these as zero for the moment until I get the actual numbers. (I couldn't find them on your sheet.)

I took the liberty and made them anyway. If you want them, they are on GM Hmm's google page.
I don't have one for Biter though.
GM Hmm |
They're stylin'!
I'll see if I can find somethng for Biter tomorrow.
Grigorii |
Nice. That will be super helpful.

I am going to delay until after Kiku's turn.

Oh! Oh! I forgot because he just got it, a very important thing!
If you stand within 20 ft of Yojimbo, you get a +2 competance bonus on attack rolls and saving throws.
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
That's a neat little bonus right there, Kiku. This is the first occultist class character I've gamed with so far.
Juniper Berrythwaite |
First for me, too.
Kiku Caritas |
Thanks! It's one of the things I like better about the phantom than an eidolon. He's helpful to the whole party instead of being a selfish combat monster.
I hope playing with an occult class is a positive experience! I'm quite a fan of the book. I also have a battle host occultist that's level 4 right now.
My only real complaint would be that the classes are really complicated, and some of them take a lot of system mastery to get a good result. I'm still figuring out how the heck I'm gonna make a kineticist.
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
I am just starting a first level game with someone playing an Aether element kineticist, so I am watching that character very carefully to get some ideas.

ON KIKU & YOJIMBO
That's a neat little bonus right there, Kiku. This is the first occultist class character I've gamed with so far.
Me too! (Maybe this is what I'll do with my aasimar boon.) I really like what I've seen of your character so far.

ANGER MANAGEMENT
Juniper accepts the rage. She's never been so mad before.
Am I an evil, evil GM that I'm happy I've made Averaka matter to all of you?

BLOCKED INITIATIVE
Azara begins to rush forward, but nearly trips over the badger.
I know it's not my turn yet, but I won't be free to post again until maybe 5 hours from now. After Biter goes...
Clearly, I was a bad GM and didn't explain the PbP convention, Blocked Inititative.
It's one of the many ways that PbP differs from in person gaming. In PbP, we do all sorts of tricks to avoid having people wait forever for their turns. One of those is running initiative "blocks" sorted by who acts before and after the monster. Anyone in the same block can act in any order because they all come before the same monster.
This allows the posting to go much more quickly, and keeps combat moving. For example, the moment the Red and Green Giants did their thing, I allowed the Averakan troops to post their actions, because they were in the same init block as Grigorii, Kiku, Yojimbo, Azara and Biter. You're not acting out of turn, Az, you're moving the game forward.

BATTLE READINESS
Can we assume that, since we were expecting battle, Azara would have been holding her weapon and scarf already? If not, then she draws her weapon as described and will draw her scarf during a later round. If so, she'll spend a Panache to activate the scarf as a swift action as well (and I'll update my Panache tracker when I get back).
Absolutely. You were walking to battle. I would assume that you all had weapons ready. If you were not expecting combat, that would be a different story.
Fair?
Hmm
PS Thank you for being patient with a relatively new Pathfinder GM. I will try to work on being better about explaining the weird conventions of PbP so that I don't wind up being too confusing!
PPS GMing for all of you this week has been an absolute pleasure. This has been a lot of work, but oh so worth it to see all your lovely RP!
GM Hmm |
A QUESTION OF MY OWN
One more thing. So long as I have a captive audience of 5 star GMs and rules geeks, I'm going to be lazy and ask you something that I cannot quite find the answer to. How far can one move when entangled? It says you can't run, but what does that mean? Up to normal movement? Half normal movement? What is the accepted number?
Grigorii |
Generally, an entangled creature moves at half speed.
GM Hmm |
Thanks. That was all I needed!
Good night all!

You have been very patient with us PbP newbies. Thanks!

I'm enjoying this game tremendously. I don't think I have had such great RP opportunities.

The one piece of advice that I routinely give to new GMs is to not be afraid to ask your players rules questions. I have been GMing a long time, and I ask my players about rules every session. There are rules that I just don't know, and I know that one of my players probably does.
This is a long-winded way of saying, WAY TO GO! :)
This seems like a fine time to share this: I decided to try PbP PFS because a good friend of mine—he GMs our Iron Gods AP home game—had joined a game, and suggested I try it. He is currently playing in another group, and we are both watching each other's games. He told me that he wishes he had been in this game instead of the game he's in. I agree. This has been a very friendly introduction to PbP.
