This seems like a fine time to share this: I decided to try PbP PFS because a good friend of mine—he GMs our Iron Gods AP home game—had joined a game, and suggested I try it. He is currently playing in another group, and we are both watching each other's games. He told me that he wishes he had been in this game instead of the game he's in. I agree. This has been a very friendly introduction to PbP.
When I find something that I initially like I'll jump headlong into it (which is how I got involved so heavily in PFS in the first place). After experiencing this wonderful introduction I decided to dust off 3 other PCs of mine that probably weren't going to see the light of day for the rest of this year and toss them into their own PbPs.
I can already tell that of the 4, this one is by far my favorite. The level of effort being put forth by Hmm and the players here really shows and is super enjoyable. I'm having doubts about joining the others =(.

You are doing brilliant, GM! All the players are doing brilliant!
Everyone is so brilliant that if you brought them into an area of Heightened Deeper Darkness, they would totally suppress the **** out of it.

Is the badger sitting combat out?
GM Hmm |
Ranger animals without Boon Companion feat are squishy, I agree. So.... If Biter isn't used in combat, I'll leave him out of the initiative block and move combat forward in a bit.
However, Harsk, I would still love a stat block for him on your sheet, particularly for his perception. Does he have scent?
As an animal companion fan*, I try to be courteous about allowing people to use their pets. But if there's no stat block for me to look at, you might as well board Biter with a friendly farmer in Averaka. Please give me stats? Pretty please?
Thanks,
Hmm
* Locally, I am going to be running a crazy animal stomp scenario for three high level animal companion duos and one insane summoner later in October so that a bunch of high-level guys who are all friends can all play together with their pets. It'll be ridiculous, but I'm pretty sure we'll all have fun.
Grigorii |
Alas, the more bodies in melee, the more spirit attacks I get, the happier I am.
Would the badger get the full barbarian rage stat bonus when I sing? Barbarians and bloodragers get theirs, so I'm inclined to think he would.

I think you are correct. The badger animal companion rages as a barbarian.
GM Hmm |
Harsk, what are you standing orders for Biter: heel or stay? Also, are you planning on translating the phrases in Giant, or keeping quiet for now?
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Is Yojimbo located next to Kiku? If so, I added the +2 bonus to my roll. If not, Hmm needs to subtract two from the roll.
Yojimbo is up toward the front, between Azara and Juniper (just north of Juniper).

@ GM: do I understand the map correctly that the water flows from South (bottom of the map) to the North? And the South of the dam is high water, and North of the dam is the low water?

I'll pre roll if I can. I'll attack the blue one. 5' forward
Harsk steps forward and attacks the giant across the damm.
"The idiot hill giants want to smash the dam everyone! Seeing the bolt strike hard at the giant. Harsk exclaims Take that! Go get 'em troops!

Harsk, this is pretty hard to read.
Can we organize / format your attacks differently?
Something like:
Bow Attack 1:
Damage:
Fire Damage:
Bow Attack 2:
Damage:
Fire Damage:
Bow Attack 3:
Damage:
Fire Damage:
With this much going on, it'll be far easier for me to read, and figure out what damage go with what attacks.

Yes. That is my understanding.

Juniper, can you explain to me what you're doing here, mechanics-wise? Are you giving AC to anyone, or just moving forward to position?
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Just moving into position.
Stand (move action)
Move (move action)
Stow quickdraw shield (swift action)
I can't give AC to anyone this round. It requires a standard action.
I promise that I will call it out when I do. :)
Edit: Rereading my Gameplay post, I can see that it is hard to pick out the mechanics. I will separate them out for future rounds. My apologies. :)

Harsk, this is pretty hard to read.
Sure. My apologies.
Did you want me to "reroll" the attack or post differently in the future?

I count four attacks with your full BAB and an iterative in that block. With haste and Rapid Shot, I would expect to only see three plus one iterative.

oh I did an attack to confirm the crit.
Sorry for the confusion all. I just started PbP a few months ago.
I thought with Rapid Shot on a Haste attack you get 2 more arrows? If not my mistake.
Grigorii |

Rapid Shot and haste each only add one extra attack. With both, you go from +15/+10, to +14/+14/+14/+9. But, no worries! Now you know.
You have a rapid shot line with +18/+18/+13 and a haste line with +18/+18. You should only have one extra attack for haste. Copy error maybe?
Edit: What Juni said! Can I call you Juni?
EditEdit: post deleted?!
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Ah. It is all clear now. @Harsk: Yeah, Grigorii is correct. Haste never gives you more than one extra attack.
Edit: I deleted my post because Harsk edited his, revealing where the misunderstanding was.
You can call me whatever you want (including "Juni"). Juniper (the character) wouldn't mind because she is very easy going and most halfings have several nicknames anyway, but she would never call herself Juni. :)

Here's how you format rock multiple attacks, Dwarf!
Powerful Charge: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Damage: 4d6 + 20 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 4) + 20 = 33
Right Talon: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Left Talon: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Bite: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
GM Hmm |
I asked Wedjat (one of my character's pets) to make a guest appearance to show how to format easy-to-follow multiple attacks.
Don't bother reposting this time, just go for a clearer format for the future!

I almost never get to share an entire song with a table, much less several! Imagining an entire contingent of half-orcs bellowing Taylor Swift made my afternoon.
Also, concealment for the win! (Remember that it also works against reach attacks, allies! )

Yeah, that was hilarious. I roll a 1, he rolls two 20s. That'll teach me to rush up front first ;-)
From an IC and OOC perspective, I was worried about taking our time at range. I figured engaging them sooner, even if it hurt me, was the better option compared to letting them target the townsfolk (or, now, them breaking the dam).
What I *should* have done was continued my initial movement past the giant, as a double move, and parried his AoO. But I suppose Juniper would have a harder time keeping up with me at that point.
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Nice shot, Harsk!
@Azara: It was probably for the best to rush forward. Good job leading the charge. Juniper has boots of speed and the Fleet of Foot alternate racial trait, so she can keep up if she doesn't trip and fall. ;) I will do what I can to eat AoO's each round now that I'm up front. But you might want to Spring Attack and stand outside his reach. He probably can't hit me except on a natural 20.
Azara Emberkin |
With a movement speed of 60ft I can actually Spring Attack the Red Giant, too. Or should we focus fire? I can do it with enough movement to avoid getting flanked by them. I don't suffer the half-speed penalty when using Acrobatics to avoid AoOs.
Alternatively I can stay where I'm at and Full Attack at reach. I do have 3 attacks right now with Haste.
Grigorii |
I say focus on black to clear the bridge, then if the green one continues attacking our allies, get its attention somehow.
@Juni: yes, accepting the rage song into your heart when you are adjacent to them helps my DPR. Spirits are your friends!
Grigorii |
@GM I'm pretty sure that the entangled condition's dex penalty applies to the giants. They do have an 8 Dex, it just gets reduced to 4 effectively, for a round. The -2 penalty would apply to ranged attacks, Reflex saves, AC, and CMD in addition to the -2 penalty to hit.
GM Hmm |
Did I run this one wrong? I didn't think that it would affect the Giant's AC...
If it did, then Azara hit. Can someone give me a second opinion on this? If so, I'm really sorry for the rules goof up here. I'll wait to resolve Grigorii's attack until I hear the answer on this one.
Kiku Caritas |
Grigorii is correct.
Entangled is a stat penalty, and stat penalties can reduce a stat to a negative modifier, but can never bring the stat below 1.

Kiku, Yojimbo, and Azara are up still.
Save me a spot up close to Red. :) Juniper might actually attack this turn. :O

warm up roll: 1d20 ⇒ 11

warm up roll: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Azara Emberkin |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Right?
Okay, so if the Giants go to flank Azara, she'll use Dodging Panache to move out of the flank.
This will likely trigger an AoO from the other Giant. Luckily, Mobility will provide me with a +4 Dodge bonus against that attack (and Dodging Panache will provide the same bonus against the initial attack).
But, if the rear Giant just throws more boulders, I'll Parry/Riposte/Riposte the Giant I'm currently flanking (assuming it attacks me).
Weeeeee! Swashbucklers!
