Rod Benteft |
That was absolutely NOT how that plan was supposed to go, as Rod restrained the urge to scream in pain from the horn goring him, nearly impaling the human. Okay... that was a... very... VERY bad idea. Dad was right... I'll never... take a hit like him.
As the minotaur retracted it's horn back up, Rod's thoughts flashed in his mind, before re-focusing and snarling. NO! I'm- I'm not out yet! I can still do this! His hand carrying his flail let go and snapped onto the bull horn, wincing as it pulled him up. But Rod held on tight, damned and determined to mount up as his other hand grabbed the tanglefoot bag off his belt.
Using the minotaur's horn, Rod attempted to straddle the minotaur around it's head, kicking it to make it roar again in anger. "Alright, you sorry excuse for beef stew! You hungry!? Well choke on THIS!!!" Waiting for the minotaur to open it's mouth and bellow again, Rod would try to chuck the tanglefoot bag into it's gullet, counting on the object to explode inside and choke it... or at least render it in shock.
1 HP left, and by god, I will make the most of it! Also, not sure what kind of roll this calls for, I'm guessing a grapple check? Maybe a Ride check? Acrobatics? Not sure, I'm just seizing an opportunity to try and make it look cool. I'll just make some rolls and hope one of them works...
Grapple Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Ride: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
And of course, nothing spectacular... ugh. It's hard to do cool stuff when the dice rarely throw you a bone...
DM Kludde |
Aeris and Jessique try their best to make the minotaur look more like a giant hedgehog, each sinking a projectile into the creature's bovine skin.
Baru engulfs the minotaur in a spray of colours, and manages to stop the lumbering hulk right in its tracks!
Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Stunned!
Ba'al immediately seizes the opportunity to hurt the creature, and does so as a chakram only barely misses his skull.
Finally, Rod tries something with the tanglefoot bag, but the strange motions of the creature put him off, and he fails to come close to accomplishing what he wanted to do.
The minotaur, meanwhile, does nothing.

Aeris puts another arrow into the air, then wades carefully across the stream to get closer to the fight.
Shortbow, PBS, bless, judgment: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 1 + 1 = 21 -4 if in melee
Shortbow damage, PBS: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Dang!
I assume the stream is difficult terrain, so will move to one square south of the southern bank. If it looks more dangerous than difficult terrain (e.g., deeper water, strong current), he'll use his move action to head for the bridge instead.
Ba'al. |
We can't coup de grace him right? Assuming not ...

As Depravity throws another chakram in the air, Aeris manages to hit the stunned minotaur. The stunned creature heaves to one side, only to get a solid bash from Ba'al. Bleeding heavily, it falls to the ground.
Combat over
Aeris Calistrel |
Aeris rushes over to check on Janira and help her how he can, calling out as he moves, "Baru, you've got her healing wand, right? Come help, I can use it if you cannot!"
Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Baru Brimmstone |
"Would you expect anything less than genius from me Ba'al? Perhaps we should use that wand of cure light wounds on Janira. It is hers after all, seems fitting we use it for her." Baru smirks at the irony.
Rod Benteft |
Rod falls over from the minotaur falling over, tumbling to the ground and clutching his stomach as he tries to stabilize his own bleeding. Shakily raising an arm, he pointed a finger up in the air and called out to the others. "Would someone.. use that wand.. on me.. when you're done? Janira first... no rush..." he shouted, though from the sound of the pained winces in his speech, all due haste would be greatly appreciated. For the moment, he was just gonna lay there and catch his breath with what was left of his insides.
DM Kludde |
Assuming you'll heal her in some way
Janira manages a faint smile as she comes to her senses and sees the dead hulk of the minotaur. Well done, well done. I'll make sure to mention this... she whines slightly, face contorted by pain ...thoroughly.
As the pain seems to subside, she asks What of the caves, what did you find?
Aeris Calistrel |
"We found the gillman, and spoke with him," answers Aeris, amazed that all she can think of is the caves at this moment, "though he didn't want to talk with us much. And a dead dhampir in a room full of very touch zombies, or at least they seemed that way to me. And another passage with weird giant germ-blob things."
He looks to his fellow Pathfinders and says, "You all studied those carvings in the big chamber a while, why don't you tell of them?"
Baru Brimmstone |
Baru tosses Janira his notes, "Perhaps a few points of interest to the Society. Those pompous artsy types will enjoy the cave paintings. The confused clergy may want to look into the dhampir's delusional scheme, or the 'alter' of sorts, diorama of Absolam. The warriors will pour us some respect at the demise of the bull headed corpse over there. Mainly though our venture captain will be glad to know the gillman are mere pilgrims will no ill will, who are simply paying their respects in the cave in a search for personal self reflection, and do not appear to be a threat."
Baru turns to the other initiates and asks, "Anything else to add?" spoken in a condescending tone that implies he is not really interested in their response.
Baru then turns back to Janira and finishes with, "You'll notice I left out the part of you sleeping on the job, while we handled the beast ourselves. That can be our little secret!" Completing his statement with a wink and a devious grin.
DM Kludde |
Noted Janira responds to Baru's sleeping remark as she rubs her head. Those are some interesting findings.
Did you get a feeling you found all the secrets the cave has to offer? After all, this is your confirmation, so if you want to go back and explore some more, that is up to you.
You can still go back and have a look around, though you have completed primary and secondary success conditions. Your call.
Baru Brimmstone |
If we've earned both PP, I vote we head to the shops with our chronicle sheets and and hope we can get into another adventure soon. Great job as DM. Thank you.
DM Kludde |
Apart from the eternal gratitude of the halfling, you've also won a glowing recommendation for your thorough explorations and bravery under peril.
Once back in Absalom - the trip back was less eventful than the trip out - Kreighton Shaine is excited to see the adventurer's notes, and even moreso when he sees what they contain. What a discovery, a cached away early altar to Aroden! he says And you were the first to explore it. It is customary that the first to explore a cave get to name it, so to you the honour!
Three days later, each of the adventurers gets a missive from the Master of Blades. The adventurers are to assemble for their confirmation ceremony, where they will be confirmed as Society Field Agents.
The ceremony is lengthy, and full of praise of the deeds of the newly confirmed Pathfinders. At the end, each is presented with their own personal Wayfinder. The wayfinder is not only the symbol of the Pathfinder’s trade but also a reminder of the three principle duties: explore, report, and cooperate.
Rod Benteft |
Rod winced as he adjusted his bandages, smiling as Master Shaine looked over his notes. And then, they were handed the honor of naming the cave they had explored. "A name? Uhm... well, I suppose we should name it after those who get the most use out of it now, huh? So, perhaps... Gillhaven! A holy place for the gillmen who journey and pray there."
At the ceremony later, Rod tried to remain humble about his success... but it was quite hard to do so; he'd finally done it! He was a Pathfinder! The first step to be a real legend was behind him. From here on, it was smooth sailing! Taking his Wayfinder proudly, he saluted back to his superior.
And somewhere, in the crowd, his father clapped quietly for his achievement...
Thanks for running this, DMK! Great module!
