Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

"And for the last time, stop calling me mistress! Just Gilian will do."

Earth Elemental Familiar 5

"Yes, mistress." The voice has the sound of light gravel cascading down a slope and reminds you of a child trying very hard not to laugh.

From where we are to the shore across the water, how far is it?

You can't see the what's in the distance. Your lights are to week to illuminate large parts of the cavern.

Dark Archive

After an hour or so, Pebble returns with word that there is no exit to the shore of the lake several miles in both directions from the mouth of the tunnel. It seems that this underground lake is huge, and the cavern in which it is located even greater.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

Ragnar looks to Sorok. "Have you ever heard of a cavern like this? It seems...impossible."

Ragnar casts Detect Magic

"Sonovab+++%! Chops picks up a flat rock and with a side arm throw, sends it skipping across the waters surface.

Solvistania looks at Chops, a small smile on her lips. "Well, that will certainly tell us if anything is down there."

There is nothing magical except what you and your friends carry.

You do realize that this is an iconic moment, right?

The stone touches the water and the stillness of the lake surface disappears. Ghostly lights that follow Ragnar shine upon the multitudes of circles that cross each other and break upon the stalagmites that rise from the waters. In matter of heartbeats, the stone sinks.

Moments later, bubbles burst on the surface.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"It's about to get interesting." Ilona says twirling her sword.

Dark Archive

The ledge that you are on is wide enough that all of you can fit on it while lying abreast, but it there is still no room to stand. After several moments, the bubbles disperse and the surface of the lake is still once more.

Solvistania stares at the now undisturbed surface of the lake. She murmers to Ilona, "Swimming in this lake would be suicide, we need to find another way. Perhaps we can find or construct a raft."

Chops leans over to Solvistania and gives her a peck on the cheek. "Gonna take a look." He crawls forward, takes a deep breath, and sticks his face in the lake to try and get a look underwater.

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Chops, we are 40' up from the surface of the lake.

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

"Wait a minute before jumping, Chops. We need a rope to get you down and for you to climb back to safety. Anyone has a rope ?"

I'm off to a big familly meeting for the next three days. Will be able to post back on sunday. Before you all try to cross by swimming, remember that Pebble is an earth elemental and that he will not follow through water, unless we build a raft.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"Yep 50 ft worth." Ilona says reaching into her pack.

"Solvi, be prepared to blast anything that tries to get at him."

"Yes, Ilona". She wriggles close to Chops, and murmers, "Be careful Chops. She kisses him on the cheek, before settling back down to scan the water, concentrating on calliing forth her magical bolt, should it be needed.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Sorry for disappearing, I moved back home and the internet connection has been playing up. Only just got it working again. Also, Pebble could go through the cavern ceiling, just keep track of the group by looking down.

Anang looks appraisingly from the wide shouldered Dworg to the perfectly still surface of the lake. "Sure you want to go down there big man? You're going to make quite a splash. Let me go, I can see as well as you in the dark and I won't make quite as much noise. Used to dive into the river from the tops of the boa-bils, this'll be a doodle."
Reaching round behind himself Anang unhooks his backpack and begins the process of removing his battered armour.
"Or, if you really want to get wet then two sets of eyes is better than one."

Solvistania nods, acknowledging the elf's words. "We know something is down there. I like the idea of two going down there, for protection." She stares at Anang, her blood red eyes burning, "We need no heroes here, just see what is down there and return safely."

Chops rolls over on his back and pulls out the net that Ragnar gave him earlier. He rolls it, then wraps it around and between his legs, and around his waste making a makeshift harness. Then he squats onto his feet and pulls it tight, tying it off. Then he ties Illona's rope to the harness in a tight knot and pulls until he is satisfied it is secure. He looks to Illona and Solvistania, "I think it will hold if I have to let go for whatever reason. Don't drop me." He pinches Solvistania on the cheek lightly then crawls over the edge.

Climb 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

As he is about to descend (and in the middle of typing my post), Anang speaks. Chops responds. "Yeah, come on down. The view is great from here." He smiles with his big fangs gleaming white in the lights of Ragnar's ghost's light.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Anang waits until Chops is a little way down the cliff face before he too climbs to his feet and crouches on the edge. A quick muttered appeal to the spirits for there to be no sharp rocks below him and Anang launches himself off the cliff and down toward the pitch black water.

Acrobatics 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 but 29 if its a jump check. Not quite sure if falling and jumping are quite the same mechanics wise.
Stealth 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 In an attempt to make as little splash as possible.

"Show off!" Chops jibes as he makes his way slowly down the rock face.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

"I have a bad feeling about this." Ragnar says, watching from the edge.

Me too.

Kiron looks over the ledge, cursing the situation. the lake has been confirmed as having no bottom yet as he watches he knows damn well what he will do if something threatens either of his new pack mates. Ah, to face terror openly. such a gut wrenching yet fantastic thing.

Dark Archive

Anang silently slips in the still waters of the lake, making almost no splash. The water is cold as ice and the air in elf's lungs almost freezes. Fortitude check, please.

Raven flies above him, keeping an eye of the immediate surroundings, especially on the part of the lake where those bubbles broke the surface. Perception, please.

Should I use the one I rolled when I thought Chops was sticking his head in the water?

Guys, I unexpectedly had to go on a business trip so that's why there are no new posts. I am very sorry, but it was very sudden. I should be back by Thursday.

Dude, no worries. These things happen. Just building suspense for the iconic moment, that's all.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

The suspense is killing me. Expecting to be dragged into the inky depths any second now. I look forward to thursday.

I'm back - finally. I have a ton of work to do from home, but I will make time for the game. You can expect next post tonight or tomorrow morning.

Silent water embraces you, cold as death. Used to warm jungles, you find this experience almost painful. For an instant, you feel your heart stopping - but the inner fires still burn strongly in the core of your being and you pull out of the stupor that has befallen you.

Some 300 yards from the tunnel exit, you see a stalagmite that stands apart from the others. About twice the size of all the others, the stalagmite is covered with some kind of mucus that glows faintly green in the dark.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Ok, that ain't normal..."

The bird wheels about and reports his findings to the others on the cliff.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"That's got to be some sort of focal point."

The thing is 300 yards out. Even with darkvision none of us can see. The ghost lights can't go that far away from Ragnar.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"Who's the best shot with a bow? Muni can you guide a blind shot at the stalactite? Solvi, can I have one of your arrows?"

Solvistania eyes widen at Ilona's suggestion, realizing that would be a next to impossible shot to make, even if she could see it to begin with. "Are you sure about this, Ilona?"

Solvi's Icewood bow has a range increment of 120' feet, but the stalagmite is 300 yards away. By my calculations that is between 7 and 8 range increments away, or a -14 to hit. That is a tough shot. Unfortunately, only one with proficiency with the bow can use it, so either Solvi or Anang would have to take the shot.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Also, annoyingly I think Anang would have the best chance of success with his high Dex but he is underwater.
Wait nevermind, Solvi is amazing with the bow because of the covenant power. Carry on..

Approaching the glowing stalagmite, you see something that looks like a mass of tendrils growing around it and raising from the depths. From the other side of the stalagmite, there is something like an entrance, half submerged in the cold water.
