Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Hefting Umbra in both hands, Sorok watches the Gnome closely as he looks around at the party, noting his gaze focusing on Ragnar and Chops and the too warm smile he gives.
"I agree, talking will have to wait. For now welcome."

Turning towards Chops. "You're foolhardy to try this. Try not to die."

Chops the Defender Dworg wrote:
Chops turns to the gnome and says, "Hey, that harness tied around you. I need that back." Then he pulls out his dagger and pricks his finger, flicking some drops of blood into the water. He shrugs, "You never know. I've heard rumors of these crazy fish-monsters that can smell blood for leagues in the water."

Lanik climbs out of his harness, staring intently into the water

going to focus into the water using detect evil to see anything coming.

"I'll keep a look out for anything. I have better eyes for these sorts of things, you know us gnomes and water."

Underneath his coat he begins fidgeting the straps holding his collapsible glaive in place.

Sorok Hamfael wrote:

"Yeah, well, we have to get over there." He replies as he slides the homemade harness back around his waste and through his legs. "You weren't there for the big elf's summons, but something big is happening, and we are the ones to get it done." He attempts to keep his good humor up, but a tenseness is detectable in his voice. Then he points to the space next to Ragnar and smiles. "Besides, with him around no matter what happens, I'll never be far," he chuckles.

Solvistania crawls up to Chops, and gives him a fierce hug, her eyes burning, "Be careful! I will guard you, Chops.". She then releases him, and takes a spot over the ledge, ready to unleash her magic on whatever lies below.

As she releases him, Chops gives Solvistania a full kiss, holding it for several seconds before letting go. "Don't miss." He winks then scoots to the edge of the cliff, looking for signs of the beast.

While he peers down at the water, he says "Anang, you can fight in the water? Maybe you should come down with me."

Dark Archive

Nothing can be seen in lake waters. Perhaps the strange unknown beast has gone, and perhaps it descended into deeps to swim in wait.

"Damn, hold on tight guys." Chops once again makes the slow descent down to the water. Once he makes it, he dips his foot into the water and shakes it around.

Dark Archive

Nothing happens.

Chops wades into the water, attempting to swim by natural ability alone...

Swim 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Doh...I totally forgot to take this as a class skill.
Fort 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

...and proceeds to flop around like a fish out of water.

Next Swim check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Lanik Takes off his coat, the chain shirt has obviously had a massive repair done directly over his check and a matching repair on the back. He takes out a collapsed glaive. He works the pieces into place until they snap together forming the body of the weapon.

Lanik admires the weapon a moment before handing it to Gillian.

"Will you hold onto this please? It looks like he needs some help."

He draws a knife, sticking it between his teeth, then takes a small length of rope and ties himself to the rope with a slip knot. Then dives headfirst in.

I'm not going to make a swim check, insted I'm doing full round movements for 10ft a round, (gnome trait).

I just got APG. I'm gonna need a day or two to read through it, but I think that most of the goodies will be available to you. I'm gonna allow you to redo your characters if you want to. I will not post that much in the next day or so, because I want to wait and see what's happening with Kiron and I want to at least leaf through APG.

To what extent? Completely, feats and skills only? I am sure you want us to at least keep the themes of our characters alive.

I meant feats and skills. Archetypes and stuff like that. You don't get to create new characters, just to retcon those character you play. And there will be in-game opportunity to do so.

Ragnar raises an eyebrow beneath his cowl as he watches the gnome plunge into the dark waters.

"Didn't we just pull him out of the water?"

Solvistania glances back at Ragnar, and with a faint smile says quietly, "Perhaps he feels he is not a worthy enough catch for us."

"Great, we caught the bait." Ilona quips smiling at Solvi's ability to joke in the tense circumstances. The Elorg maiden was coming out of her shell much to Ilona's joy.

If you don't mind, I'm going to switch Chops to have the Swim skill using this as his in game opportunity for that change. That was totally an oversight on my part and I was surprised when I was typing in the dice, and realized I had forgotten to include it.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Is anyone holding the other end of Lanik's rope, or is it just disappearing over the side of the cliff? And the only change I'd want to possibly swap some feats around to aim for the shadow dancer prc or possibly acolyte of skin if you can count the penumbra bloodline thing for caster level for spell like abilities.

I assume Kiron has the unenviable task, he he.

I think I'll have Sorok do that since he's pretty much useless as long as the demon is underwater.

Lanik tied a short rope onto the rope chops is using. He is using a knot that can slide on the rope.

Just to be clear, you will not get the opportunity to modify your characters until a bit later in the game. Those of you who do not have Swim as skill can still swim, just not very well. You can not fight in the water and do anything exotic, but you can - with time and effort - move from point A to point B. Now, to get things moving along, the creature in the water is not the demon. That is the creature that kidnapped Lanik while he was on the river to eat him, and then returned to its underground lair. For the sake of moving the game along, I'm gonna rule that the creature gave up on trying to catch Chops and Lanik and went to hunt another pray. You should try to get to the glowing stalagmite. Just remember that you are fatigued and you have to roll Fort check when entering the water.

Damn. I wanted Chops to do stunning fist on it.

Chops yells to those up top. "It seems to be gone.We need to get to the glowing cave spike."

Lanik quickly climbs back up. Taking his jacket and glaive back. He props his jacket on his glaive as to let it dry.

"so does anyone mind telling me whats going on?"

Solvistania stares at the little one, her gaze seming to dissect him, piece by piece. "We are here to hunt down and destroy a demon who has fled to this cave. And what is your story, little one?"

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Anang gives the gnome an appraising look as he reaches up to brush a dripping dreadlock out of his face. His hand comes away smeared in white pigment, the paint covering his face having run after his time in the water. Anang frowns at his paint smeared hand and then fishes around in his pack and pulls out two small stone pots. Using the pigments in the pots and his fingers he starts reapplying the thick paint covering his face.

EDIT: Oops, I'll save this for after people have talked to Lanik then shall I?

"Well then, back in the water." Anang pulls a short length of rope from his pack and loops it round his waist before tying it firmly to his pack, leaving about 5 feet of slack. After making sure the pack is as firmly closed as he can manage he crawls forward to the edge of the cliff and for the second time dives down into the icy water.

Ragnar listens to the others talk and seems a bit perturbed that he does not have much to offer to the situation. He winds the rope in his hands, looks at Ilona and smiles wanly.

Sense Motive 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Solvistania senses he is hiding something, not too unusual in these times, so she lets it pass, for now.

"yes, that is our purpose here, do you wish to assist us in our venture?"

Chops climbs up the rope behind the gnome character, listens to his demand to know what is going on and to who he is. He crawls over close to Solvistania while she answers and turns to Lanik.

Sense Motive: Lanik 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

"Well Fishboy, we just plucked your ass out of the water and you do nothin' but question and stare. What's your deal?" He is clearly worked up from his multiple descents and ascents from the water, which is dripping from his frowning face. Steam can be seen rising off of Chops' neck and arms as it evaporates in the cold air.

"Call me a realist. I'm sitting here with a group of people who could be an oddly assorted pack of resistance fighters or just as easily be an odd group of shadow assassins and frankly I have no idea one way or another."

Lanik walks back to Gillian.

"So forgive me if I don't immedatly trust you.......

Lanik begins shuffling through his pockets.

"where are we exactly? I lost my compass."

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

The big Dorn sighs and ignores the confrontation. The others had seemingly exhausted their options, so he had clearly decided to try another approach. He looks around at the group, then turns to Ilona.

"How much rope do you think we have altogether?"

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Ilona smiles at Ragnar and the ambient temperature seems to rise momentarily.

"Thinking of linking up an emergency rope? Good idea, I've got 50ft and I'm sure a few of us do as well."

No. The stalagmite is about 300 yards away in almost straight line. There are couple of smaller ones between you and it.

"Yep, cuz a bunch of assassins would rescue you from drowning." Chops turns to Ragnar and Illona. "We could use the ropes to link us all together. Kind of like climbers. We don't have enough to reach the spike, but at least we can keep some of us from drowning." He stops and thinks for a second. "Ooo! Ooo! I have an idea." He wiggles his pants off, ties the ends of the legs into knots, then blows into the opening for the waste. After about a minute of puffing, the pants are full of air. He has the waist firmly grasped in one hand. "Floaters!"

Solvistania remarks quietly to Chops, but her eyes gleam with mirth, "Very inventive, Chops!"

She turns to the others, and says, "I fear I may be unsuited for this endeavor, but I will do my best to endure this. I believe I should have rope tied to me as well.". She then reaches into her pack, and then proceeds to make sure her precious lorebook is sealed tightly in the oilskin used to prevent water damage. It should suffice to prevent splash damage, but she is not sure how it would last if she was completely submerged. Of course if that happened, the loss of her Lorebook would be the least of her worries.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

Any chance we could use mending or prestidigation to temporarily make a pack airtight and then use it as a float? I was just going to attempt to keep my pack tightly sealed and hope it was reasonably buoyant but sealing them would be useful.

"That's ok, Solvi. You can get into my pants like this." Chops places the knotted pant-legs over his neck and holds on to the waistband in front of his chest. "And if you start to lose a little air, you just open up the pants and blow like this." Chops sticks his mouth up to his pants and gives it a few more puffs. Then he takes off his make shift life preserver and hands it to Solvistania. "Would you like to try?"

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

We can link enough rope together to reach from one of those spikes to another. The strongest swimmer goes ahead while another anchors. Then the rest simply pull themselves across the rope. Then we leapfrog to the next. We just have to be sure we have enough rope to reach the two spikes that are furthest apart."

Solvistania looks at Chops with a look wondering if he was completely serious, or whether he was making a joke with her. Deciding to take him at face value, she shrugs into the crudely assembled life vest, and then spends several minutes making sure her precious gear is secured against it. She tested out the way Chops showed her to secure it and looks up at him again, I think I am ready for this now. That deserves a reward, I think.”. She gives him another kiss, rewarding him for his inventiveness.

But the pants loose the air and just flop. Your pants are most probably made of wool and wool is full with little holes.

Guys, just jump in the water and swim. And roll Fort checks. The water is really cold.

Solvistania will cast Resistance on herself, to help with the Fort save.

I was assuming canvas or denim, but oh well. I tried and it made for an amusing conversation.

Chops puts on his pants and jumps in with Solvistania.

Swim 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Fort 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Chops will attempt to hold on to Solvistania to help keep her above the water. I don't know what rolls would be involved.

Ragnar has never been around a body of water larger than a well before. He does not have any idea how to swim. He's strong, but realistically a swim that far would just kill him.
