Feeling much better, "Well, alright! Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! Those hands of yours, darlin', sure know how to touch me in just the right way to get those kinks out. Thanks, gorgeous." He winks at her while sporting a smug smile that's just full of far too much smug. "Any time you want that dinner, just say the word. And wear those pants." He leans in close and whispers, "I like how they fit." He waggles his eyebrows before throwing her another wink; the arrogance the half-elf exudes being far too much for even outer space to contain.
He quickly snaps his attention toward the others and says, "Alright, gang! Let's get this show on the road. What do we gotta kill next?" He gives one big clap before rubbing his hands together in anticipation, raring to go.

Al loses all his paladin-y abilities. HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE SWORD!!!
There doesn't seem to be any magical treasure around, but perhaps helping save the world is enough of a reward. Knowing you have a little time, you decide to rest and prepare yourself for the ritual, which Tristain is certain he'll be able to perform since I screwed up a while ago and he already did it.
More seriously, let's say you take time to rest overnight -- you do have it -- so you can start fresh in the morning with the ritual.
And with that, we've finished book 5! I need to do a little prep for Book 6, which I hope to have ready by Monday at the latest (I'm coming up on a deadline for a writing project, plus some other RL stuff in the next week, so no guarantees, but that's my plan!).

Kyffin frowns at Lothan's shennanigans and wonders how Starflit will react. He laughs at Al's comments, "Hey now, I almost swung this butter knife in this fight. And I'd have hit too!" He laughs some more at his own failures in that fight.
He spends the day in rest and reflection, trying to decide what would be good spells on the other side. On the other side of what you might ask? He does, and has no ready answer.
"Hey Tristain, what's on the other side? What might we face? I'm trying to determine what powerful spells to have on tap."
As we've finished the book, are we also leveling up? Tends to happen at the end of books but not always... But I figure with some time off we could level if it's due.

*bonk!*
Tristain pauses his bonking, thankful for the interruption and the chance to think about something else more happy than the fact that Lothan lives. His face scrunches up at the question.
”How am I supposed to know that? I’m going to assume we’re going to continue to meet all sorts of unnatural horrors and nightmares just like we have ever since we left the starting corner!” he replies, missing his simple, easy starting corner.
”Remember the starting corner? Remember when it was all easy and we knew that the starting corner existed?! That was great, wasn’t it?”

"I remember the starting corner," Kyffin says seriously. He thinks back, "It's been a while. Good bonking in that corner. But we've come far since then. Hopefully we can return to the starting corner someday." He thinks hopefully.
He has no fear for himself for he is, of course, immortal. Clearly. But he looks at poor Tristain. He wonders, not for the first time, how Tristain has made it so far. He didn't think he would.
He rests, and prepares for the next day.

As Tristain completes the ritual, you suddenly find yourself elsewhere -- but also somehow the same. The dark stone structures of Neruzavin press in tightly, looming overhead as an oppressive reflection of the alien city. It seems as if the city were shrunken and pressed together to form claustrophobic streets among the buildings. The ground is rough but scoured flat, and a cold, dry wind whistles through the grooves and haphazard openings in the rock. The walls of this artificial canyon wind away to the southeast. High above, a moon shines with a, pale, sickly light through a break in the clouds, and ethereal towers rise behind it. Simply to glimpse this sight is to know, beyond all reason but with utmost certainty, that one is in Carcosa. These winds impose a –2 penalty on ranged attacks and Perception checks.
Two flying polyps quick arrive, almost before you can get yourself situated. The monsters’ roars sound like shrieks mixed with scouring wind as they rush to attack, but you've dealt with such polyps before, and are able to do so again skipping a repetitive fight.
Moving along, The artificial canyon walls narrow to the north of this clearing, and numerous crevices lead away in other directions. Drifts of sand accumulate along the passages. The wind moans as it reverberates along the rock wall. A trumpeting cacophony occasionally blasts from the fluted towers high above, trailing off into silence a few moments later.
A voice calls out: "Please, I mean you no harm. I sensed your arrival and traveled here by magic to meet you. Have you sworn fealty to the King in Yellow or do you stand apart?" The voice comes from a strange figure -- she appears to be as a human woman transformed into a life-sized porcelain doll. Her skin is a lustrous alabaster but a fine lattice of cracks runs like a spiderweb across her face and body. Black and gold etchings run the length of her arms in rows of symbols and runes. Here and there on her cheeks and the backs of her hands, bits of porcelain have fallen away to reveal that she is hollow.
Her face is disturbingly expressionless. When her eyes open or her lips part, there’s nothing inside except a yellow light. She wears an exquisite gown of white, gold, and purple. Her long blond hair floats about her face as if she were underwater. Her image is on the combat map

Tristain isn't sure what to make of her. Perhaps she's a woman transformed somehow, or perhaps a construct? Whatever it is, it's beyond his knowledge. He does think she sounds slightly opposed to the King in Yellow.

Staring intently at the 'woman', "Okay, she is just cool. I think she's a doll." Lothan chuckles at his own words and then finds absolute cleverness in himself coming on. "I'll be honest, dollface," he looks to the others, "See what I did there? 'Dollface'. A pet name AND it fits perfectly. HA! Oh man, I am amazing." Turning back to the adult porcelain doll, "Yeah, sorry, dollface, I've no idea who the man in the yellow hat is. Or whatever it was you called him. Glancing over at Kyffin, "And I don't know who Hastur is either. Hope I'm not supposed to."

Starflit lets the veterans of this mad exploit answer the strange female. She has heard of the King in Yellow and would never swear fealty to him (It?) willingly...but maybe this is a good place to use a strategic untruth. Starflit has heard of the King in Yellow, but fortunately for her sanity, doesn't know too much. She's not able to tell anything about the woman.
"I am Cassilda," the woman says, "and an ally to Hastur’s enemies and victims alike. I once the queen of Yhtill before the King in Yellow destroyed our city. I understand you have no reason to trust me -- that is reasonable when dealing with the Great Old Ones -- but I will submit myself to any divinations or truth-telling magic you may have. I hope we might find common cause.
"You find yourself in Carcosa, the third of three great metropolises on the world that was also home to Yhtill and our rivals, Alar. Carcosa is a city of monsters, with inhuman denizens that stalk its streets and are spawned in its shadows."
She explains further:
Carcosa was a mirage that appeared across Lake Hali when the twin black suns dipped below the horizon and seemed to fall into the waters of the immense lake. Carcosa and its mysterious immortal ruler, the King in Yellow, dominated the folklore of both Yhtill and Alar. Some modern legends suggest that Carcosa was Hastur’s home before his imprisonment.
Though imprisoned, the King in Yellow was able to reach beyond his cell, and he eventually deceived the people of Alar and Yhtill, bending them to his terrible will. He reshaped Carcosa to become not only the instrument of his release, but also a catalyst for his apotheosis into an Outer God. Hastur mystically conjoined the three cities, drawing the other two into the abandoned husk of Carcosa. Empty Carcosa served as a skeleton and foundation for this new creation.
Carcosa is not merely a collection of streets and buildings, but a living, alien, and monstrous entity. It can fashion a mystical connection to cities on distant planets and feed on them like a parasite. Its sustenance is civilization itself. When a connection is created, a destructive plague of madness spreads across the target city as Carcosa feeds upon its zeitgeist. A portion of Carcosa, meanwhile, shifts and warps as it adds a twisted replica of its target, which is referred to as a nexus.
Unless the process is disrupted in time, the entire target city and its denizens are actually transported across the gulf of space and drawn wholly into Carcosa. When the parasite city reaches its apex -- an unknown size -- Hastur may emerge from Lake Hali and ascend in power as an Outer God.
Starflit |
Starflit obliges the strange woman and makes use of her discern lies ability during the lady's speech. At the end, she also casts detect magic to see if Cassilda might have any buffing or deception-type spells active currently.
Tristain the Chalker |
Tristain also listens, but without any magical enhancement, to her words for sounds of untruth or misdirection.
1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 20 + 2 = 36 Sense Motive
Tristain also wonders what he knows of the places of which Cassilda speaks.
1d20 + 26 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 26 + 2 = 37 Know (Hist/Local/Planes) - Yhtill/Alar?
Wow. Maybe people shouldn’t be building cities on rock and troll. This is what happens.
Kyffin Rhees |
"Greetings Cassilda." he glances at Starflit, Tristain, and the others for their nods of approval. "I'm Kyffin." he goes on to introduce the others and explain they're chasing a rather bad man, who is also trying to undo civilization as we know it. And in the most insidious of ways.
"So if you can help us find him, perhaps we can help you as well. We certainly don't want Hastur raising as a god after all." he chuckles at the absurdity of them helping with so grandiose a plan.
Still, they have done great things. So why not?
Albert Hazred |
"If we stop Hastur, does that stop the city, or does stopping the city end the reach of Hastur? Both of them seem like powers beyond the influence of mortals, a great old one and a parasitic metropolis. If we sever the connection of Carcosa, then what's to stop it from making a new connection to another city? Or is the solution to calm the madness in the infected cities, to starve the parasite that is Carcosa from feeding upon them? And what happens to the citizens if we destroy the nexus, do they remain in their former city, or become trapped here?" Al pales at the scope of the task and the threat to civilization that it poses. And he wonders how Lowls fits into everything, what impact could he possibly have on these plans that stretch across the planes?

Tristain and Starflit don't detect any falseness from Cassilda, indeed just a hard determination to oppose Hastur and Carcosa. Tristain doesn't know much more, though he does recognize the names: Alar and Yhtill were the pillars of civilization on the nameless world. Alar was an aggressive and militaristic culture, prone to frequent rebellions and uprisings. Yhtill was a beautiful city of aristocrats and artisans, but stagnant and decadent.
As Kyffin explains, she says she will help you as she can: [b]“Carcosa is like a vampire that feeds on civilization itself and the stelae are one of its fangs. They transmit psychic energy through even the distant void of space. As Carcosa is fed, so in turn is the King in Yellow. I fear that he will soon no longer be fettered here. You must break the connections, not only to save your city, but perhaps to save us all.”
She explains Carcosa will eventually reach a critical mass in its growth and Hastur will then ascend to become an Outer God. When that occurs, she believes that Hastur’s ravenous hunger may spell utter doom for all life on Carcosa and beyond. At Al's question, she says she's unsure if you can permanently destroy either Hastur or Carcosa, but you can certainly delay this current plan.
Cassilda offers to help you learn the location of the three nexuses that are connected to Thrushmoor. Her Imperial Diadem has powerful divination abilities, and she offers to use its ability to cast vision to discover the locations of the Star Stelae you need to activate. However, she needs to be within close proximity to a being or place of special significance to Carcosa to ensure accuracy. She offers to accompany you for a while in order to locate such a thing.
Tristain the Chalker |
Tristain looks at others and wonders if they mind another weird, creepy thing in the party. Maybe this doll will cancel out the other one.
He shrugs.
”Yes? Sure? If you want this. I mean, we’re lucky to be alive, and lucky to be here, and actually have the worst luck around with all sorts of hideous creature either attacking us or using a bow,” he asks Cassilda. ”Do you have any idea what might be guarding the stelae?”
Albert Hazred |
Al sees the questioning look from Tristain and doesn't mind sharing his opinion. "I already like her more than the talking butter knife. Come on Cassi, we'll deal with those stelae. Say, does anyone around here sell dried fruit, prunes perhaps?"

Starflit nods her general approval of trusting the strange lady.

Shrugging and grinning casually, "Fine by me, dollface. No complaints here. You're a pretty good-looking doll, so, why not, huh?" He then looks to the others and says, "I got a million of 'em. Somebody stop me!" He says with flare before winking.

Since I kept forgetting and wasn't clear before, Kaklatath did not accompany you to Carcosa.
"I cannot work directly against Hastur," Cassilda says, "but I can provide aid to you in your quest. I will use my abilities -- which aren't meager -- to help you when I can."
As you move forward, the oppressive basalt walls wind through the Neruzavin nexus. The rock walls are rough and uneven and riddled with peculiar protrusions and shapes. As you move into the center of a clearing, you observe a solitary figure who stands in the moonlight as if waiting for you. This humanoid creature appears to wear a white mask and is dressed in what might be pale-yellow priestly robes. After a few moments, it beckons you to come closer.
Cassilda whispers, “It is the Pallid Mask, the King’s emissary. It is he who brought damnation down upon all of my people, including my daughter. There are unwritten rules that govern us both. I dare not oppose him directly, for the King will punish that affront. Yet the Stranger has learned his horrid master does nothing when I defend only myself. So we are at a stalemate. I may discover something of the stelae you seek, though, while he is distracted with you. So play his game. Just be wary.”

As Al approaches, the Pallid Mask calls out: “I would parley. The King in Carcosa knows you travelers and thus so do I. You are delivered into the hands of the Unspeakable One, but you already belong to him. Carcosa is his child, and he is Carcosa. Carcosa birthed Xhamen-Dor, who is now one with a certain Count Haserton Lowls, with whom you are well acquainted. You were marked long ago.
"I have a proposition for you: Swear fealty to Hastur and gaze upon the Yellow Sign of your own free will. He will grant you crowns of gold and make you lords in the new reality that waits.”
Tristain the Chalker |
"I am the King in Blue, and who are you?"
Tristain hunkers down in the back, waiting for whatever that is going to happen to happen. He’s far more of a fan of the King in Blue than the one in Yellow, let it be noted.
”I don’t really want a crown, much less one of gold. Those things are heavy, and likely to get in the way of a good bonking,” Tristain mutters, hoping that others agree that crowns are silly and bonking is good.
Tristain does have questions, however.
”Who would be our subjects, if we are lords? Do the ruled not have a right to chose their rulers? Will there be free and fair elections?” Tristain has questions.
Kyffin Rhees |
"And if we are not willing to bow before Hastur? We are here for Lowls, what would it take for you to give him to us?"
Kyffin suspects this line of reasoning, if reason can be applied at all, is doomed to failure. But he is curious as to how they think. Perhaps something of their plans can be gleaned - though he suspects chaos and destruction play a role.
Let's keep it going folks! Also, don't forget to level... I think we're going to need it soon.

Starflit, who has zero firsthand experience with Lowls, allows Al, Kyffin, and Tristain to do the talking, keeping silent herself. She does, however, use her discern lies ability to check whether or not the being's offer of crowns and wealth is made in good faith or is just an empty promise. Not that she's considering accepting it....
Starflit's mostly leveled-up behind the scenes; I just have to put the updates online, hopefully later today. The exception being her new teamwork feat and solo tactics/teamwork feats in general. Starflit doesn't get a sense that he's lying, but she knows the spell isn't infallible, and can't really deal with the concept that the Pallid Mask's version of the truth might not match what you would see as the truth.

I'll take that crown of gold and melt it down to make spoons." Raising an eyebrow in curiosity, he looks around at the others a moment before finally asking, "So, the world will be my subject? Really? Because I gotta say, that's a pretty sweet deal, I'm not gonna lie," he grins, nodding demonstratively as his thoughts wander to the idea of such power.
Quickly noticing the not-so-pleased looks from the others, "What? No good? Is that a bad idea? I mean, we're talking about the world being our subjects here, people. Think of the scumbags you can get some serious revenge on. I know a few I could get some payback on, let me tell ya," he says, nodding emphatically.
Turning his attention back to the Pallid Mask, "For the record, buddy, I don't even know who this 'Hastur' cat is that you're talking about. But if he's handing out crowns of gold, let me get in line. I could make some nice coin from that bad boy." He throws a wink to the others, grinning mischievously.
Starflit |
Starflit continues to remain silent. Catching the wave of anger beginning to creep into her friends' replies (most of them, anyhow), the inquisitor decides to risk casting a spell, a new one she's just learned, as soon as what feels like inevitable combat breaks out. The spell, greater lend judgment, will allow her to share her judgments (once activated) with one of her allies with a touch. She figures that Kyffin and Al likely gain their own sacred buffs with their own spells and divine abilities; that leaves Tristain and Lothan as possible recipients. Just then, Tristain makes his horrid pun and Lothan...well, he's just Lothan.
Tough decision....
The inquisitor knows that Tristain, despite his incessant head-bonking, is quite intelligent and might not need the saving throws and AC buffs as much as Lothan; then again, it's a touch spell, which means she'll actually have to touch Lothan if she makes him the recipient. Her mind clouded with indecision, Starflit waits for combat to break out so she can first invoke her judgments and then cast the spell.
Whole lotta nothin' in that post!

Familiar with working together now, Kyffin, Al and Starflit quickly leap into magic, casting spells and advancing on their foe. "Like everything, parleys come to an end --" the Pallid Mask begins to say, only to be cut off by the Teralindar's Honor. "CAN'T THE TALKING COME TO AN END NOW? LET'S GET WITH THE FIGHTING! KILL THE ABBERATION!" Pallid Mask is, mechanically, an aberration, Kyffin.
Pallid Mask adjusts his robes, revealing Hastur's Yellow Sign on his body. He steps back, but when Kyffin follows, he reaches out to touch the warpriest, who begins to fade as if he were being unmade! Need a DC 28 Will save, please
The Pallid Mask’s touch steals the very essence of reality from his victims. Creatures struck by the Pallid Mask’s touch attack take 1d6 ⇒ 1 points of Charisma drain and become less real, appearing faintly translucent and shadowy. Attacks from such creatures deal half their normal damage, and spells cast by an affected creature that do not deal damage have a 50% chance of affecting their targets. Creatures struck by the Pallid Mask remain unreal for 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6rounds. A successful DC 28 Will save negates the Charisma drain and reduces the duration of this effect to 1 round.
Touch: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 37
Party is up.

Wow! Just one touch from that and Lothan is finished!
Round 1, Init 10
Tristain casts Haste and worries himself back about 30' more, just in case.
Tristain's Haste: Round 1/15. You feel an urgent need to bonk your head on a wall, this can be overcome by acting quickly and decisively. If you choose to act quickly and decisively, then get +1 to attx/reflex yadayadayada. Otherwise, choose to enjoy a nice wall bonk, which is also lovely.
