Just happened to notice that the half damage totals for Kyffin's strikes aren't correct; looks like they should be 18, 23, 17, and 18 to me. Every point of damage may very well count in this fight!

Lothan peppers Pallid Mask with arrows, as Starflit rushes forward alongside Al and Kyffin (and Tristain retreats). Al's thrust misses, but Kyffin draws blood over and over -- despite seeming to almost be unreal!

Despite the lack of expression, you get the feeling the creature smiles at you, as it murmurs to Kyffin: "The Yellow King's seed already grows within you. Deny it how you will, but you are already his!" You must succeed at a DC 28 Will save or become confused and babble incoherently for 1 round as your mind reels at the terrible revelation. This is a mind-affecting, language-dependent effect Then it reaches out and touches Al, who's next to start fade from reality. DC 28 Will save

The Pallid Mask’s touch steals the very essence of reality from his victims. Creatures struck by the Pallid Mask’s touch attack take 1d6 ⇒ 2 points of Charisma drain and become less real, appearing faintly translucent and shadowy. Attacks from such creatures deal half their normal damage, and spells cast by an affected creature that do not deal damage have a 50% chance of affecting their targets. Creatures struck by the Pallid Mask remain unreal for 2d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 rounds. A successful DC 28 Will save negates the Charisma drain and reduces the duration of this effect to 1 round.

The group lays into the Pallid Mask, but he seems to withstand the blows -- until Tristain's spell hits him! Unlike the usual transformation to dust that spell causes, Pallid Mask's image seems to shatter before disappearing. Perhaps he wasn't really here at all!

"Impressive," Cassilda murmurs. "Pallid Mask is no easy foe."

As you gather to recover, she tells you that this recent proximity to the Pallid Mask has allowed her to make use of the Imperial Diadem. She is now able to tell you the locations of the three Star Stelae: they located in the city nexuses of Aevan-Vhor, Bohlvarai, and Paris. Cassilda provides directions and a sketched map to each city. She explains that there is no precise order in which the Star Stelae must be deactivated, but advises you to go in the order in which she listed them.

Aevan-Vhor’s stela is the least stable and Paris’s is the strongest. In addition to their visit to Aevan-Vhor, she also recommends that you seek out someone she refers to as “the Musician.” She explains that he is a traveler known to visit other worlds who has enjoyed some success sidestepping some of Carcosa’s many threats. Her visions have revealed that he was recently a guest of a Lord Eldarius of Aevan-Vhor.

Starflit walks up to Tristain and claps him on the shoulder. "That was a timely spell indeed." She also gives nods to Kyffin, Al, and even Lothan. She opens her mouth to speak but then closes it again with a troubled look. Agreeing with Kyffin and Tristain to follow Cassilda's order of approaching the Star Stelae, she steps in line, ready to proceed.

"Not far," Cassilda replies. "You should be able to reach the point where the Neruzavin nexus ends and you can enter Aevan-Vhor in half an hour or so."

Tristain doesn't find anything -- he suspect Pallid Mask wasn't actually here, but was rather fighting through a projected image.

Once you've finished healing and making any other preparations, Cassilda bids you farewell and wishes you luck. She promises to watch out for you and aid you if she can, then teleports away.

You move on, past another chamber where you have to fight the biggest flying polyp you've seen yet. But past experience helps you know how best to battle it and you manage without anyone dying. Another polyp fight. We've done that before, so I'm skipping this one. It was advanced, but even so... Continuing on, the path comes to an abrupt end as a chasm splits this alien city. It is a 20-foot-wide expanse that drops down into darkness, with no discernible way across.

Still, Kyffin's power appears to be stronger than the bat creature's and it quickly stabilizes. I'm going to assume Kyffin crossed first, Al was last, per his post. Per random choice, Starflit was the one crossing, so I'm going to assume Lothan and Tristain are still on the far side. Dispel check failed, so no immediate effect.

Across the chasm, the creature -- which Tristain knows only silver weapons that are also good will fully harm the creature, resists magic yes, SR, and is immune to cold and everything else undead are it has undead traits -- swoops toward Kyffin. Still 15 feet away, it reaches out to bite, ripping at the half-orc, who shivers at the freezing fangs. 42 damage, plus 15 cold!

Worse, Kyffin feels it sucking his magic away. Need a DC 23 Will save or one spell effect currently affecting you immediately ends—determine which spell is drained randomly.

Starflit's slow in reacting to the monster's appearance; perhaps her courage is finally failing her. Not having any recollection of such a creature, she calls out shakily to Tristain, "Is this thing undead...or what ?" Then she gets resolved, scurries across to again feel solid ground beneath her boots, and casts searing light against the shadowy scourge (after invoking her usual judgments--Protection and Purity--on herself).

She grits her teeth as the cold blast is about to hit her. Dropping to a knee and making herself small, while also raising her magical cloak to ward off the blast, the inquisitor seems no worse for wear after the cold attack.

Kyffin laughs. He spent the entire combat being beaten and preparing for a fight that was clearly beyond him. For all his flexibility - he was too slow.

He laughs again and plies the healing wand on his injuries after getting some help from his own abilities and the Azata.

"Maybe it's got a lair? Be nice to get something for the effort." he suggests, though he expects none. When everyone is ready, he suggests moving on while the air walk is still in effect.

There's no immediate indication of treasure, but as you keep an eye out, Lothan's able to spot a likely hiding place in the next cavern: a 20-foot-by-45-foot opening in the walls of the nexus 40 feet above the path. You easily ascend, where you find amid a tangled pile of skeletons, tarnished mundane equipment, and half-rotten packs, a luckblade (1 wish remaining), a cauldron of resurrection, a ring of psychic mastery, 2 potions of cure serious wounds, and a sealed container filled with rare and expensive material components worth 10,000 gp in total. These components can be used with the cauldron of resurrection or applied to any spell that requires them, like restoration or stoneskin. Additionally, you discover a platinum ring worth 3,300 gp, a set of diamond earrings worth 2,290 gp, a pair of silver armbands worth 340 gp as a set, and various gemstones.

"Wait a minute there, Bonkers! I could use that ring for some...," he starts but then stops, grinning rottenly before the other jewelry catches his eye. "Whoa ho ho! What have we here?!" He reaches into the pile and snags the ring and the earrings. "Now if this don't score some points with the ladies, then they are missing out BIG TIME," he says, waggling his eyebrows.

Moving to inspect the jewelry closer, he grins as if he just found the ultimate treasure; and it's a grin that most - if not all - would find somewhat creepy and possibly concerning.
