Inelukii's connection would be the hardest to establish I think, but perhaps she could be doing some research at the temple of Pharasma? Maybe studying midwifery techniques to improve her healing abilities? It would at least have her in the vicinity. And put her in touch with Inuksuk perhaps where they could have met and bonded over shared ethnic background.

:) That could work too.. I've been kinda leaving it up to Megan to reveal what happened to Ashes mother and sister once we return to the Temple..as that is going to be one of Ashe's concerns. His mother IS a very independent and motivated woman.. not really under Ashe's control... heh. She might have plans of her own. But both options sound cool to me... I'll leave it up to Megan..but she seems to intimate that you ALL have sufficient reason to be in the Cathedral of PHARASMA.

Yeah I looked up the RAW too... I think Megan's ruling comes from this description in the module...

Likely she felt this was a cheat... if a mask is not covering your face ...then are you really wearing the mask at all? And if you are not wearing a item.. why would its magic keep working? Ashe, I think you might be taking the inch that the author gave to the doctors and taking a mile.

The doctor's mask (a 50 gp item) is described as resembling the head of a heron and featuring slits that allow its wearer to breathe, this black, goggle-eyed mask of leather and cloth covers the entire head and shoulders, acting as a primitive gas mask filled with herbs meant to purify the senses and ward off disease. This mask grants its user a +2 bonus on Fortitude saves made to resist foul smells (like a stinking cloud spell or a troglodyte’s stench) and inhaled diseases.

The magic item (a 2,000 gp item that is a head slot item and has not been errataed) is described as resembling the more common nonmagical doctor’s mask, a plaguebringer’s mask grants a +2 resistance bonus on saving throws against nauseating scents and immunity to one specific disease (the disease must be chosen at the time of the mask’s creation—the ones in this adventure grant immunity to blood veil). The mask veils the wearer’s alignment, making him register as neutral to alignment-detecting effects.

So, for 1,950 gp, you're getting immunity to a disease and nondetection. If you make that item slotless to boot, it is the equivalent of a 1,000 gp item.

By comparison, you can get a one time use of nondetection from a potion/oil for 800 gp or a ring of mind shielding (which also offers immunity from detect thoughts and discern lies for 8,000. If that ring was slotless, it would cost 16,000 gp. In all likelihood, the mask is intended to have a downside for its 2,000 gp price. Perhaps making you look like a freaky bird.

You guys might have run this differently, but its pretty clear that the author's intent was to have the doctors wearing the masks on their heads and if the PCs insisted on seeing that they weren't some sort of monster, they would lift their mask to show they are human without completely removing the mask. Presumably, they would immediately put it right back on so they don't catch the plague.

I'm not the GM here, but I wouldn't allow the doctor to still get the save bonus in that situation (not that it would likely come up at that moment). The save is clearly related to wearing the mask (just like the mundane item). I don't think I'd allow them the immunity either if someone happened to expose them to blood veil at that moment.

No question, the author is definitely stretching things with respect to still getting the nondetection effect in that situation. But I think its one thing to say that it is still in effect long enough for them to show you their face and another thing to switch it to a slotless item and ignore the downsides of the item.

I guess I don't fall on the 'good for the goose' side of things. I fall on the side of feeling like sometimes the bad guys get to bend or break the rules for the sake of the story.

All that said, we're the newcomers here and if you guys have ruled it that way and its important to your character, have at it.

LOLS! Its not really that big of a deal to me... and its not really come up in the game. Only two times has Ashe been in disguise where he did not want people to know he was a paladin. In truth, if Ashe really was concerned about his Aura of Goodness giving him away.. he'd just cast Undetectable Alignment as a bard from his scrolls or as a paladin from his prepared spells.

Again, I'm only repeating what the DM has ruled. I asked she approved.

I agree it is a stretch, but its established that the NPC's are doing a similar thing. Its not really all that important to Ashe he not be detected.. it is a convenient feature though.

On p. 550 PF Core Rules Table 15-19 Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values -

If say one wanted a item.. "Cloak Clasp of Hidden Alignment"...

That could be a 1st level Bard Spell, Use-Activated or continuous, 1 charge per day, and just for good measure no space lmitation.

Spell Lvl 1 x Caster Lvl 1st x 2,000gp. Divide by 5 {1 charge a day}, 2x cost for no space limitation, then half the cost for a spell with a normal duration of 24 hours.

That would be a 400gp item.

If we decided to be less 'cheeky' and use the 2nd level version of Undetectable Alignment as per paladin...

Spell Lvl 2 x Caster Lvl 4th x 2,000gp. Divide by 5 (1 charge a day),
2x cost for no space limitation, then half the cost for a spell with a normal duration of 24 hours.

That would be a 3,200gp item.

I give it one charge a day as a limit cause then its subject to being dispelled for a day until it recharges the day if it gets dispelled.

Two very different prices but close enough to the 2,000gp of the Plaguebringer's Mask...

Just saying Ashe could easily have afforded to have one of the THEN present Wizards in the party at the time to with Craft Wondrous Item feat to make him and item~ AT HALF cost to do the exact same thing he is using the mask to do right now. {Shrug}.. it was just not that important since Megan said Ashe could simply use the mask to do the same thing the Physicians were doing.

If its an issue to any of you.. I'm cool with just not using the mask that way.. like I said not really a big deal to me personally.


Undetectable alignment is a different animal than nondetection. You don't register as any alignment at all. Definitely a spell/effect that throws a flag for the diviner that someone has something to hide about their alignment.

I raised it because I didn't see any way you could be doing it without wearing the big honking bird mask which was definitely something that deserves role play.

You guys have house-ruled it differently and it sounds like you'd rather leave it alone. Nuff said.

I thought that in pathfinder there wasn't a way to detect alignment any more. You can detect components but not actual alignment. So, a True Neutral and somebody with undectable alignment are indistinguishable.

He said he was detecting alignment then specified he was looking for good, neutral or evil only some folks were responding with their full alignment (I didn't, I just said 'good'), but full alignment was what wsa specified.

The house rule regarding plague masks was thus: you can retain the alignment-masking properties when it's hanging round your neck in contact with your person, but it only protects you from blood veil (not a problem if you're a paladin) if you wear it properly over your head. I reached that conclusion as the AP allowed the NPC doctors to raise the mask to show their faces without affecting the alignment-masking properties.

Second we must get both Vencarlo and Neolandis out of Korvosa to someplace safe... not sure if the module addresses this but we'll see.

Edmund would like to keep the spell books we found, both because it fits his background, and because I can get him a mnemonic vestment which lets him cast from a spell ok once per day.

I'm also thinking of getting him an Ashe-like book of scrolls (though maybe not of EVERY wizard spell, and throw in some pages of spell knowledge as well for those rare spells where caster level and spell DC would be an issue.

Edmund hasn't been updated to 9th level yet, so he'll be adding a new 2nd, two 3rds, and two 4ths. Are there any 1st level spells he doesn't have folks would like to see him able to cast?

Edit: in another game I play, I have a spell caster who uses adhesive spittle to great effect, so I will probably get a POSK of that.

Well... as a 4th Charm Monster is a good solid offensive, defensive and utilitarian spell! Though indeed Black Tentacles is very useful as well! As for 1st level spells.. burning hands would be a good choice as you don't have a low-level AoE damaging spell that you can spam... useful for swarms or low powered multiple threats that you'd rather not waste a fireball or such on. And you might consider taking fireball.. as AoE effects its pretty useful. I think with your cash from the Arkona palace... once we get to Kaer Maga... you might consider purchasing a Lesser Meta-Magical Elemental {Cold} Rod... which would allow you to add cold as an attack type of yours without having to take cold spells per se {cold fireball, cold lightning bolt, cold burning hands...etc...}! Would only expand the forces you could bring to bear!

Also with all the cash that Edmund is getting.. some dusts of emulation would make using scrolls or items for anyone not normally able to use such ...MUCH easier!

Definitely a couple meta magic rods. Cold one was already on my list, given that we're going to a place called the Cinderlands.

3 1st level spell knowledge pages, a cold meta magic rod and an extend rod are 9000.

The mnemonic vestments are 5000.

That leaves money for a few useful 1st level wands.
He can also carry the wizard wands we found in the labyrinth.

I hadn't considered charm monster. I normally bypass the Enchantment school altogether, as I don't like all or nothing effects. But charm monster really fits his character well.

I was thinking black tentacles and dim door, but if I take the Expanded Arcana, I can get 3 new fourths.

For the three 1sts, going with burning hands, adhesive spittle, and I'm considering alarm. Next time we are dungeon crawling, he would be able to drop an occasional alarm at important crossroads, as well as ward emergency campsites.

Turns out he gets dim door for free at 9th level from his bloodline, so he also picked up elemental body 1.

He bought: mnemonic vestments, a rod of disruptive spell, a rod of elemental cold spell, and a wand of endure elements, so nobody needs to be uncomfortable in the Cinderlands.

He also bought a portable alchemist's lab so he can make cheap alchemical items like alchemist's fire.

Cool..just remember, we will need to hold our purchases until we arrive in Kaer Maga... mostly an informality.

However, the Queen does not know about Edmund being a part of the JUSTICARS... he could reasonably travel the the Acadamae unmolested by Grey Maiden or Red Mantis Assassin and make all those purchases.

But I believe the Acadamae has closed its doors in the face of the current city turmoil.. though a powerful Sorcerer seeking arcane purchases might make them open up.

Currently, Edmund has no intention of continuing to adventure with the group once they get to Kaer Maga, but I foresee no difficulties in changing his mind. Even with his grief over the presumed loss of his son, he was finding the life rather exciting after many decades of selling books.
