Oh, and a mistake I'm just gonna chalk up to being tired: Those caught in the cold blast are Astraden, Carina, Tanith, Cuetzpalli and Eben.

Farrukh hacks viciously into the winter wolf, cutting off a slice of the murderous creature's flesh.

"Oh, the garden district. That's... lovely. Really nice part of town." Regardless of his words, Eben's voice conveys the distinct impression that he would rather visit a barber to have every one of his teeth pulled without the benefit of getting good and drunk first than set foot in that particular part of town.

And on the road...

Woken from a perfectly good dream by the howling of wolves, Eben manages to cast a protective spell before the beasts close.

Just so it's clear - we didn't have a dedicated round for buffing? We had a round to prep which for most of us would be standing up and grabbing weapons. Is there any reason Tanith wouldn't get an AoO on the one attacking him?

Tanith undoes the stopper on Carina's extract only to be interrupted by one of the over-sized wolves viciously latching onto his muscular calf. He shivers as he's caught completely off-guard by the blast of frost.

You were asleep, like everyone else (besides Farrukh), so if you need to do stuff like pick up your weapons and get out of bed that would probably be your action.

Okay. So why didn't I do that in our "round of buffs"? That's what's confusing me. If I'm already prone, no point in standing up with being surrounded now. So I guess my move action is grabbing my trident. Standard attack the worg north of me.

Spiny also attacks from prone, same one.

Or, since this seems to be a topic of confusion, some used it to buff and get up. Unless I'm mistaken, we weren't under surprise round rules, so we were eligible for both a standard and move action.

I think in that case, Carina would've only had time to get up and hand off a shield extract to Tanith...

And Astraden, Eben, Tanith, Cuetzpalli and myself all need to make Reflex saves against the winter wolf's frost breath.

ANYWAY, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO:

Round 1: Actions
Standard Action: Throw Bomb at Winter Wolf

Reflex Save *Action Point!: 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 8 + (5) = 19
Carina manages to duck and cover, avoiding the worst of the winter wolf's icy breath. Her natural resistance to cold helps her weather the rest of the blast.

I think I only lose 2 HP from that... please correct me if I'm wrong.

She glares at the wolf, then pulls a bomb from her belt and throws it at the beast.

Then why weren't we told "You have one round of actions to do whatever you want before combat starts, here's a map. X,Y, and Z are prone and unarmored, Farrukh is awake, armed and armored." That would have been much less confusing. I guess I'm being a b&$+$. I'll stop whining now.

So pre-combat round I stood up and drank my extract (to prevent retconning). Round 1 I pick up trident and attack as stated above. AC is 18 without armor+shield spell.

Edit:Already rolled my save up a couple posts. Made it, took 8 damage.

Okay, this is the last time I give the party this kind of edge... :P

You had one round specifically for buffing. You were able to get up and draw your weapons.

I'll respond to these posts in a bit.

Battle at the Rift, The Isle of Last Resort

In case anybody is wondering why I gave the one-round buff, it was in reaction to the very frequent question of "Did we have time to place buffs?" I figured people would complain that "Farrukh should have had a chance to hear the wolves coming and get everyone up", thus extending a random encounter with even more pointless nitpicking. It was an effort to simplify in a way that worked in favor of the party—"rounding up", so to speak. Looks like my effort was poorly-arranged.

Cuetzpalli (not prone) stabs the worg in the side, then skewers it through the back to finish it off.
Spiny claws and bites at another, despite being on the ground, badly injuring it.

Carina throws a bomb. As she does so, the worgs beside her lash out viciously.

Carina is yanked to the ground, causing the throw to go wild and land 1d6 ⇒ 2 right by Astraden's feet.

Eben, Carina, Tanith and Astraden (and two worgs and the winter wolf) all need to make Reflex saves, DC 15, to halve 7 fire damage. Carina may take a penalty on this save for being newly prone, I can't remember the condition rules off the top of my head.

The winter wolf manages to avoid the worst of the blast, as does one of the worgs, though the former still looks rather irritated.

And To Recap, To Avoid Confusion:
Everyone was on their feet with weapons drawn at the minimum when the fight started. I wouldn't assume you're wearing armor unless you have light armor or Endurance, but it really does not matter. Spiny got bull's strength on him, by the way, which I noticed his attacks didn't include.

Carina, Spiny, Farrukh and Astraden are prone from tripping attacks. Also, no, Cuetzpalli, you're getting confused again. You're not a b@$%!, you're fighting b&&!@es. And dogs. Apparently male canines of any sort are just called dogs or something? Screw it, let's move on.

Round 2: Worgs
The winter wolf snarls. She roars in halting Common. "Kill the fire-spitter! Kill her now!"
1d4 ⇒ 1

The worg Spiny badly injured seems eager to get away, and moves to obey.
Spiny/Cuetz AoOs: 1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 11 - 4 = 17 Gonna save time: It's dead, and Cuetz saves his AoO.
A fatal mistake, as it is instantly torn down by Spiny.

Tanith, did you mark off the 3 damage from the bomb yet? It's "save for half".

Also, you're remembering to take half of Carina's damage, right?

Tanith's fists fly, punching through the chest of one worg, breaking the spine of another, and nearly snapping the neck of the third. Nearly.

I just marked off the damage for the bomb. Tanith isn't taking Carina's damage because the Shield Other only lasts 8 hours and it goes up in the mid-morning normally.

The last lingering frost particles on Eben's skin evaporate as the flames of Carin'a bomb wash over him. "Ow, gods dammit!" Still, the howling complaints of the wolf leader give him and idea that defers his plans to wildly swing his longsword around a bit longer...

"Ow! Again! Bad dog!" he says to the one who managed to luckily nip the correct Eben's heel. He manages to keep his balance, and mutters, "Deal with you in a minute..." while pulling some sulfur from a pouch and gesturing as it ignites in the air.

Casting defensively concentration: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

He just barely manages to complete his spell without losing track of the delicate wording amid the snarling wolf pack. Five gaily colored snapdragons begin whirling around him. "More than one of us spit fire, honey..." he says, pointing at the winter wolf. A warm orange snapdragon follows the direction of his finger and explodes directly on the alpha wolf's nose.

If you want.
AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
The worg snaps at Carina, but she moves too quickly.

Round 3: Worgs.
The winter wolf staggers. It looks like Farrukh's brutal attacks and Eben's deadly missile have taken their toll. She starts limping away.

Not noticing the flight of their leader, though, the rest of the worgs continue attacking. Tanith takes another bite to his unarmored calf. Miraculously, even though Farrukh is still on the ground, he's able to block all three of the worgs' attacks.
