This is the test for a longer term arena campaign, with combatants beginning at level 1 and advancing through combat. Some rules and specifics are still being worked out, so it's not ready for full campaign status yet.

Not to mention survive rounds where you're effectively grappling your opponent but don't have them pinned yet. A few penalties can be painful, but far from taking a damage-dealer out of a fight.

Also Macho, I know you gave a description in the thread, but you should have a detailed and permanent non-spoilered description in your profile, so anyone can check it to see exactly what you've got with you.

Choon, I'm sorry you're the odd man out right now, several fights have yet to finish. If you'd like, I (or anyone else) can whip up a character for to get more testing accomplished (you could of course jump back in as soon as someone's available).


About grapplers, the fact that their main combat tactic is completely nullified if the opponent puts on something like freedom of movement kinda hurts 'em too.

For the next battle: Is this a level 2 or 5 fight? I'm assuming 2?


Ahh yes, this is level 2. Actually, if you and Choon each have 5th level characters, we can run that now also.


I do have a 5th level. It's another Kyrian admittedly, but yep.

I have one lvl 5 up, but he needs some tweaking. I can roll with it of you'd like and do the tweaking later. I'm currently in the process of building a second, better lvl 5.


I'm not in any rush.

Side note @ Jehova: 2 is now the minimum level we're working from? And we're free to toss in new combatants yes? I might make a new someone.


I like the idea of starting at second instead of first I think, it offers a much more varied starting point and allows for more cool interactions between class abilities right away. Starting at level one your options are much more limited as to your potential saves/feats/class abilities. Dark, feel free to make as many as you'd like, I really enjoy seeing the build ideas, and there are some ideas for characters that I'm just waiting for someone to discover/stat up/

Also, this weekend I'll be writing up a new draft of the overall rules, and if people want to read through those to see if I'm missing much, that would be very excellent.


Hey Jehova, Is it too late to join the party? Also if you are rewriting the rules should I wait to do a submission until after you rewrite them?


We'd love to have ye, and the rules are not being changed, just summed up and made more organized. There aren't too many to begin with, everything within the arena (past an initial surprise round, look at the battles if it's unclear) follows the Paizo rules as strictly as possible, and the character creation/advancement rules are laid out in the initial post. The biggest change since we started is that new characters begin at level 2. If you read through some of the fights we've had so far you should have a good idea on how things work.

The real arena will be going up sometime before Valentine's Day barring some totally horrible rules problem that we encounter while testing. It's probably not a bad idea to try out a few different builds and see how they stack up against the competition now, so that when the arena goes live everyone has already done some revising of their characters, thus ensuring maximum badassery.

We're passing the 2 minute mark for that fight over there in #10. How's that for a reality check. You all just finished the first of three periods in high school wrestling. Or just did one huddle and play in football (I think). Real world time vs pathfinder time is funny to compare.
A 15 minute boxing match would take 180 rounds of combat to resolve. A soccer (futbol) game? 1080 rounds. :P

Charan vs Rolg is going to be measured in DAYS if the GM doesn't take up my offer for a drinking contest. We're already on round 32...

Eben, I am extremely curious how you ended up with fast healing at level 2. May I ask what these shenanigans are ?_?

Edit: Also, 'grats to you two on being the first pair to force a draw in the arena. Talk about stubborn!

Judgement of Healing, my man. At low levels, it's really not all that useful. This is a bit of a corner-case, though, because Charan doesn't really have the ability to produce damage numbers consistently... at least not and keep his Force Fields up. I just had to get a high enough AC that he couldn't hit me very often.

Otherwise, he would have worn me down.


I did wear you down to what, 4ish hp sans rage? Charan has fought two battles without being hit once, without wearing armor. :P


@ Eben: Ooh, inquisitor eh? I've been wanting to try one of them, actually. Nice :P

@ Charan: To be fair, you've also needed divine intervention to actually take down any opponents as well ;)

I think you got me a shade under 10 at the lowest. But that was close enough for my taste.

I really have to thank one of my players for opening my eyes to the glorious wonders of crane style.

He plays a dex-based Aldori-Swordlord Monk and manages to end battle after battle without taking a hit, while doing stuff like running along the arm of a cloud giant skeleton to jump onto a legion archon.

So I wo't have much time to post over the weekend, but if we're still testing come monday, I'm up for another fight (though not against my furry friend over here).

I said this above, just thought I'd post again in the alias.


Rolg drags Bruno (sans the big, ugly dog) across the dusty, smoky common room shared by the arena combatants. He spots Charan and the two stomp (in usual dwarf lead-foot style) to stand in front of the monkey martial artist.

Rolg slurs out a few unintelligible dwarven lines, then points to Charan. Bruno shakes his head and looks over at Charan, relaying that Rolg thinks they have unfinished business. Instead of looking angry, Rolg grins. Apparently an incomplete challenge is no fun at all.


Man, feels like Kyrian should learn Dwarven. He might pick that up in his spare time :P

Er.. Considering the monkey's uber solo focus, I doubt I would be much of a teammate until level 8.

Hmm... we actually haven't had much chance to do team battles yet. Perhaps now would be a good time :P

Even funnier is the fact that a new character I got together is probably gonna be taking some crane style. All of the melee denial!

Welp. Got a level 5 rogue/bard now, for anyone who's looking for a turf war.

I really should get an alias just for any one-off characters, I suppose.


All I can think of on the Knife Fight thing is Michael Jackson's Beat It...

I should have a few more characters up soon. Though I probably won't be participating til after this next Friday.
