GM, i was wondering though.
Will there be a language barrier between "average" Golarion and the lands of the Jade regent?

A social skill character is less useful if the majority of opponents are unable to understand him.

Seeing as it's an AP about slogging over to the far side of the world, yes, there are quite a few language issues that can crop up. f friendly NPCs, and you can always just throw a couple points in linguistics down the line.

True, but some languages wouldn't appear in the linguistics page i reckon, being quite exotic tongues. Even though humans can speak anything but druidic.

The char would, with his personality, try to talk down/negotiate with hostile npc if it means he'd be facing bad odds otherwise.
Language barriers of that kind would make it rather...difficult. :)

Tien is the common tongue for that part of the world just like Taldan is common for Avistan. Ameiko speaks Tien and there is no reason that you can't learn it from her on the long trip over to Minkai.

Imagine convincing an evil npc to sway from evil to being your ally.

Chyrone wrote:

Whilst there are a stack of languages that could crop up, it's unlikely that the AP designers would make it so that someone in Minkai didn't at least speak Tien. So a linguistics level in Tien would totally get you buy long enough to get the levels needed for more languages.

Just as a bit of a laugh, the tengu version I was toying with had 5 languages at lvl 1 due to one of the racial abilities of Tengu. He could speak every relevant language, he'd just offend people when he did :P (Cha 7)

The Exchange

What mumbles said. I actually wouldn't be surprised if most named NPCs knew common. This AP was written with a party full of westerners in mind.

By the way, expanded on the background a bit and changed the campaign trait to reflect a relationship with Sandru. Having a Paladin that was raised with caravan defenders actually work on a caravan makes more sense than a Paladin just hanging out drinking and being bored.

Yeah, general folks slowly switching to Tien from Common makes sense. But agreed, no doubt many of the named villains will have Common (or another 'Western' language) on the list seems highly probable.

If not, I'd probably just spend 1 point in Linguistics learning Tien. Then again, this character already know Minkaian...

If anything, it would lend itself to some nice roleplaying!

Here's a character I've wanted to make it through Jade Regent with for a while, he's never made it far though. I'll have to look over the stats, this is mostly for the bacstory and traits. I haven't decided whether he'll use an elven curve blade, a battleaxe or a greatsword though, but it will be two handed, either way.

Haven't made an alias for him, for obviously no results have been picked. Misc items could be bought if he would.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

A bard is proficient with all simple weapons, plus the longsword, rapier, sap, shortsword, shortbow, and whip. Bards are also proficient with light armor and shields (except tower shields). A bard can cast bard spells while wearing light armor and using a shield without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a bard wearing medium or heavy armor incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component. A multiclass bard still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

Bardic Knowledge (Ex)

A bard adds half his class level (minimum 1) to all Knowledge skill checks and may make all Knowledge skill checks untrained.

Background

Spoiler:

Edward's parents were minor nobles in Magnimar. Rich kids were ignored by the "common" children. He went to the theater academy, as he had a certain inborn charm and wordplay he had picked up observing his parents. Little Edward developed a touch of sarcasm when something turned sour for those that picked on him.
A scandal involving his parents forced them to leave Magnimar and they moved to Sandpoint. There he befriended a young girl named Ameiko. Though their personalities were different, her being strong willed and direct, Edward was more of a laid back sarcastic guy. They shared a mutual interest and talent for entertainment, a common ground that got them a bond of friendship for life.

Personality & Appearance

Spoiler:

Edward is a modestly reserved guy. A sarcast to those he doesn't like, he might appear as anti-social. Which is totally contrary to what type he really is. Edward is well versed in bluffing or persuading his way around, learning the first from the theater and the latter from his parents. He's most open when talking to Ameiko and would backtalk any1 who'd speak ill of her. Once you get to know him, he's an okay guy. His weapon of choice is the short bow.

Edward has medium long brown hair and matching eyes. Not the most muscular of men, he's more of a pleasant look-at.

Who are YOU going after? ;)

Also updated the crunch and added a brief primer on how I plan to progress the character mechanically.

crush: 1d4 ⇒ 4 Guess the DM added a 4th person even though the player's guide says only 3, which is okay.

DM, I'm okay with Shalelu being a crush, but where do you get the info stating she is a crush option, unless you added her?

I haven't said anything about the crush trait at all actually. Someone just asked me how old 3 of the 4 major NPCs were, and I tossed Koya's age in for good measure, because there's quite a few traits/backstory concepts where someone might want to know how old someone else would have been when their character was X years old.

That said though, Childhood Crush does specifically list "NPC Choices: Ameiko, Sandru, Shalelu" at the end. As does Younger Sibling.

While I'm at it-
Best Friend (Ameiko, Sandru)
Caravan Guard (Sandru)
Foster Child (Koya)
Friend of the Family (Koya)
Hero Worship (Ameiko, Shalelu)
Rescued (Koya, Shalelu)
Student Survivalist (Shalelu)

That should save people a little flipping back and forth.

crush: 1d3 ⇒ 2 Sandru

Got a description up and added a bit to my backstory. Waiting is the hardest part. xP

I realize that you've said you are not keen on summoners. Despite that, this is a character I've been trying to get into a Jade Reagent game. She is trying to get home to Tian-Xia after being stranded in Kenebras by an oni who possessed her.

She is not "just another summoner", made because they've got good crunch. Here character concept can only be accomplished with a summoner and while I'm cool if you won't take her, she can be found here.

The Exchange

Decided to go ahead and compile the list of characters I've found so far. I organized by campaign trait because the GM didn't explicitly lay out the party make-up he was looking for. A quick glance at the submissions show two things really, Shalelu has taken most of the town's love, and that was at the expense of poor Koya.

Let me know if I left anyone off.

Saif's summary drew my attention to the fact that I'd made a mistake in my original post. I changed my mind on what campaign trait I wanted to take as I was in the process of posting and forgot to update the stat block when I changed my mind. I was intending to take Foster Child, not Student Survivalist. Here is the revised stat block:

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Gift of Tongues
Gnomes love languages and learning about those they meet. Gnomes with this racial trait gain a +1 bonus on Bluff and Diplomacy checks, and they learn one additional language every time they put a rank in the Linguistics skill. This racial trait replaces defensive training and hatred.
Gnome Magic
Gnomes add +1 to the DC of any saving throws against illusion spells that they cast. Gnomes with Charisma scores of 11 or higher also gain the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—dancing lights, ghost sound, prestidigitation, and speak with animals. The caster level for these effects is equal to the gnome's level. The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell's level + the gnome's Charisma modifier.
Knack with Poison
Some gnomes have an instinctive understanding of poisons and their uses. Gnomes gain a +2 racial bonus on Fortitude saves against poison and a +2 bonus on Craft (alchemy) checks to make poison. The bonus on Fortitude saving throws against poisons increases to +4 if the gnome accidentally poisons himself when applying or readying the substance. This racial trait replaces illusion resistance and obsessive.
Sneak Attack (Ex)
If a ninja can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.
The ninja’s attacks deal extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the ninja flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every two ninja levels thereafter. Bonus damage from sneak attacks is precision damage. Should the ninja score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this precision damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.
With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (such as a sap, whip, or unarmed strike), a ninja can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, even with the usual –4 penalty.
The ninja must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot, and must be able to reach this spot. A ninja cannot sneak attack while striking a creature that has concealment.
Weapon Familiarity
Gnomes treat any weapon with the word “gnome” in its name as a martial weapon.

Sandru and his caravan fit better thematically for my barbarian and his backstory. Koya is awesome, had I went the arcane route I first contemplated I would have chosen her probably.

Yeah, my character is focusing on Ameiko because he grew up with her. That, and his parents were secretly training for the day he could pick up the katana and (help) defend her.

I say help, because at the very onset of the game, she is technically higher level than Shirota.

I decided to let the Warpriest of Yamtsumi slip as the concept is too closely tied to the Oni Spawn Tiefling and instead work on something else.

I'm working on a Samsaran Cleric of Tsukiyo who is a Friend of the Family and actually a childhood friend of Koya.

8 Humans, 2 Kitsune, 1 Dwarf, 1 Gnome, 7 Half-Elves, and 2 Elves so far. Pretty average spread, though personally I thought I'd see more non-core races like Nagaji, Tengu and Samsaran by now... Though Cuàn said he was making a Samsaran...

Personally I go for interesting concepts. After all what's the point of playing fantasy games if your going to be something so relatable. But as I said it's a personal preference. I guess it depends how you play. ;)

I'm with niveus, for me it's all making an interesting concept. Once I have the concept or core roleplaying idea, how do I flesh that out in the rules? Take mumbles, he NEEDED the lowest charisma possible to represent just how unappealing his speech is. Pretty much didn't work in any other race.

For PFS I have a lawyer character who I've taken several suboptimal spell choices and feats because they thematically suit him. Blistering invocations and judgements from lawyers are just more flavourful ;)

I think most folks here come up with a concept, then bring that concept to conception with the rules. I was simply commenting how it seems that many people seem to be avoiding the listed races for this attempt at Jade Regent. There isn't anything wrong with it, just bringing it up was all.

Neither way is bad. Concept to Crunch or Crunch to Concept. Doing both well is valuable. Heck, mix and match the two. My only advice is to stay fresh by stretching your comfort zone from time to time on how to make a character.

Eden's origins were rather different than most I suppose, both his crunch and fluff have changed drastically since he was created; he changed little by little every game I played him in, until he became what he is now. I guess you could say I forged him slowly over many years until I found the one adventure I wanted him to retire in.

Cuz that's my habit, I retire characters once I run them through the game I think they best fit in, or that they were meant for. Until then they are concepts that keep getting tweeked.

The Cleric is on her way, yes.

I was mainly led to Samsaran because I wanted to make a childhood friend of Koya and the only other race that's allowed and long lived enough to not be elderly are Elf and Dwarf. Among those two Elves would have been more likely to be close to Shalelu while Dwarves generally aren't my thing, they require a very specific concept for me to enjoy them.

The rest developed from there. I knew I was making a Cleric even before picking race. The god was a logical choice once I had Samsaran settled as she'd know her deity through the memories of her past lives. She herself is of mostly Varisian stock with some distant traces of Tien blood but her previous lives were all from the Dragon Empires. Part of her thing during this game would be the resurfacing of those memories based on triggers we encounter during play.

Over halfway done with my character. The backstory is pretty much lined up, just got to finish the 2nd half.

Also some of the stats are in!!!

The Exchange

I always hate trying to represent concepts mechanically. Its always easy to find the right combination of feats, class abilities, and equipment to define your character as you've envisioned them. Its always hard to get them all online as quickly as possible without jeopardizing the integrity of a well made build (unless you're starting at higher levels).

Anyways I haven't seen the GM in a few days, is he still around? I have PbP abandonment issues.

Here we're still 8 hours away from Friday and considering the GM is in the eastern US (assuming I remember correctly) that means even longer till Friday.

Yeah, I'm just sitting here dusting off notes and waiting for the clock to run out on character submissions. Then comes the bit where I sweep through and kick most people to the curb and really start running here.

Well honesty is a plus I suppose. xP

Hello - I would like to jumpg in with a last-minute submission. I would've provided a character sooner, but my April was very busy at work, and I and didn't start looking at recruitment threads until today! Going forward, my schedule will be much more relaxed again.

Here are the basic outlines of the character:
Trait: Friend of the Family (Koya)
Human Monk (Sensei, Qiggong Monk, Drunken Master)
More to come in an actual character profile.

Background:
Decades ago, Oda was a samurai in the service of a Minkai lord. But when he and his brothers-in-arms were routed on the field of battle, he could not bring himself to achieve an honorable death bit committing seppuku. Instead, he surrendered to the enemy, and too willingly gave them information in exchange for his life. In the face of such deep dishonor, Oda left Minkai and became a caravan guard. He fled to lands that would not know about his shameful story. Unwilling to share the truth to anyone, he relied on the tavern to drown his pain. He traveled and traveled, until he found himself in Sandpoint, a town on the other side of Golarion.

In Sandpoint, about as far from Minkai as he could get, Oda found himself unable to flee any further. Mere distance, it seemed, was not the answer. Oda was sitting in yet another tavern when the barkeep, sensing a man in need of some guidance, told Oda he needed to seek out a seer. With nothing else to do, Oda went to see Madame Niska Mvashti, and discovered a woman who could look straight into his soul. Niska told Oda his own story without him sharing it. And she told him that his only path for redemption was to serve a new lord, and to do so honorably. Oda decided that the only lord he could serve was Madame Niska herself. For she was the first person who knew his secret, and yet accepted him.

Oda indeed found some measure of redemption in service to Madame Niska. So he found himself in sorrow when the elderly Madame Niska called him in for a meeting, and told him that her final days were approaching. But Niska had a greater purpose. She asked Oda to promise to watch over Koya if she went on a long trip. "I'm an old man, and not fit to be a caravan guard any longer," replied Oda. "And Koya is too old for such travels. You worry too much." But Niska insisted, and Oda agreed.

Now that Niska has passed, Oda finds himself in sorrow again. He had never quite let go of the tavern, but he found himself deep in his cups again. What was left for this old man without a master? Oda was not at all sure.

Alright! This is her stuff. She is taking the friend of the family trait.

Introduction:
Kairi's past lives have been hazy and unclear in memory. But 1 goal in each succession has remained, to create the perfect meal with the finest ingredients in the world of Golarion. Her personality has changed through rebirth, but the passion has stayed the same. The delight of seeing children smile at the sight of dessert, the joy of watching a grown man pat his belly when he is full, the smell of food that draws people together to make communities. Kairi believes that food has a magical power, the most beautiful way to exercise intrinsic benevolence. She is on the hunt for the finest food that will change the foundation of cuisine and happiness. However, the journey to accomplish such a daunting task will not be an easy one. All people deserve a seat at her dinner table.

Backstory-Previous Lifetimes:
Kairi was born many lifetimes ago as a human by her Samsaran father, Biderick, and human mother, Helena Stron, in the country of Varisa. Kairi was a human women named Serena at that time long ago. She was a rather spiritual person and focused on awakening herself. She disciplined herself as a monk, seeking absolute perfection in her work. Indeed, She soon became a worshiper of Irori. But she took very hard creeds in her journey to self perfection. Fasting herself from food as a demonstration that she would not succumb to the desires that haunted every human. But life took a different turn. While she was starving on the street, a fellow by the name of Farston Tanya was a well known cook of the time. He quickly took her in. He was intensely attracted to her. He thought she was crazy to pull such behaviors as starving oneself to remove the temptation of overconsumption or what a person might call gluttony. He convinced her to try one dish, one single dish of well made food.

As she took a bite, she found something she has never witnessed before, harmony. She cried at the thought knowing fully well, that her father left her when she was a baby. What her mom said was that her father was seeking some kind of self perfection. Her mom was heartbroken, but her mom understood. Serena (Kairi) did not understand, the only she could deal with never knowing her father was to seek self perfection herself.

She was joyful and quickly asked for more food. They fell in deep love a few months later. They had children and a family cooking business crowded with adventurers from everywhere. Farston always said, "When you give a traveling adventurer nice food, dreams will be made and they will become the best stories you hear." Farston's dream was to create the perfect 5 course meal with the addition of dessert at the end of the 5 courses. Throughout their lives they worked hard to make his goals come to fruition, but unfortunately a human life was to short for such a goal. Farston died of old age.

She was devastated at his death, but a few years later, she died of old age as well. But suddenly she was reborn as a light blue looking humanoid. A samaran! She was strangely raised by her own children. Of course, she never knew that she was once their mother any more. They seemed quite familiar people, but she could not figure it out. Deeply intact in her mind is still a desire to cook, Farston's dream became her own. She soon figured out that she could not stay stationary to fulfill her goal to make the ultimate 5 course meal. She will have to hunt for the cuisine.

Many lifetimes later she was named Kairi. In this lifetime she was a cleric of Irori. Through travel, she befriended a woman named Niska Mvashti. She traveled with the caravan that Niska Mvashti was in. Being well fed was a must. Kairi expertly rationed delicious meals that won the respect of the caravan. The caravan served her goals of adventure and curiosity. When Kairi and Niska traveled to Varisa, Kairi explained to her that she will die soon. She told her to bring her to a town that she can grow up happily in as a reborn child. "My cooking will remain, but my memories of you may not remain. Please let me remember my name." Kairi begged Irori to give her powers to succeed in her endeavor on her next life succession, even if in her next life she chooses not to worship. For she has served him well in this lifetime. Niska followed her wishes.

Backstory-Present Lifetime:
Kairi was raised my Niska mostly in sandpoint. Niska considered Kairi as one of her children along with her daughter Koya. Kairi read veraciously in her younger years, reading anything she could find. Seeing this, Niska gave her a present, a book full of recipes. As Kairi opened that book for the first time, a flood of passion returned to her. Her goal through many lifetimes was not lost.

Cooks were considered to be quite dexterous, but Kairi was not. Pots and Pans were broken, food splattered all over the floor and many cooking tools were dropped. With determination she picked up what she dropped and cleaned her mistakes. She developed a rhythm in her cooking, using her mind over matter.

Holding food by her two hands closed together in a cup, she dropped her food in the right places: In pots, pans, plates and bowls. Her cooking became admired by the community in Sand Point. Visitors and guests were treated with fine gourmet and hospitality. She loved hearing stories and tales from anyone. During this time she also took care of Niska. This is because of Koya's travels with Shandru's caravan.

Many years of joyful cooking passed. In till one day while cooking, Kairi dropped to floor unconscious for 20 minutes. She was shocked to learn that she was partially blind, she could not see farther than 30 feet in any direction. She was devastated and deeply depressed. She was only getting worse because of her continued discovery of her new powers. Despite of her newfound struggle, Niska sent her a urgent message asking Kairi to cook for her. Kairi came by to visit despite her own struggle. Kairi did not know she was going to hear Niska's last words to her. "Your powers were made not hinder, but to help. I believe I know someone who will need your help. I have no doubt that Koya will soon strongly ponder searching for a rather long venture somewhere. If she does.. please protect her. Please Kairi! It is time to let go of your previous doubts and rise to the occasion."

They hugged for the last time and said their goodbyes. Kairi was free from her self toture. Kairi left bittersweet, she knew Niska's death was soon. However, she believes that somehow Niska will still be in her presence even after her death. Niska did so much for her. Kairi will sacrifice her life to protect Koya, if that is what needs to be done.
