Hello, fellow forumgoers,
I'm starting up a Skull & Shackles game for a few friends but an needing a couple additional players. I'm hoping for a pretty quick recruitment so we can get started the beginning of next week, but we'll see what happens. Two-Three slots are available. Current party makeup is as follows:
"Cuddles" - Half-Orc 'hug specialist' (probably a Barbarian, Ranger, or Tetori)
Enya Cendrillion - Ifrit Bard (Sea Singer)
River - Undine Witch
Any Core + Aasimar, Catfolk, Ifrit, Merfolk, Nagaji, Oread, Samsaran, Sylph, Tengu, Tiefling, Undine, Vishkanya
Allowed Classes:
NO Gunslingers or Summoners
Witches are allowed, but Slumber Hex = BAD!!!
Cavaliers/Samurai are allowed but will have a rough time since the AP features lots of ships.
Paladins are allowed but will have a rough time since the AP assumes everyone is a pirate.
Reflavoring class abilities is encouraged. I love intelligent Barbarians who go into “battle trances”. Likewise, Ninjas are not required to wear black pajamas at all times.
Build Guidelines:
Paizo material only – no 3rd party
20point buy
Level 1
HP: roll or go PFS-style. Your choice at character creation. Choose wisely. Max to start with though.
2 Traits
Average starting gold
Alignment Restrictions:
Any, but Lawful alignments will have a rough time. You are pirates, after all. On a related note, if your Chaotic Stupid character irritates the party enough, they have my permission to kill you. I’ll even help. *evil grin*
Feats:
I’m banning the Leadership feat. You’ll be getting enough followers as it is throughout the campaign.
Antagonize is allowed – but only the Diplomacy function. The Intimidate function is more than a little messed up.
Crafting feats are encouraged. It’ll be difficult to get the exact magical gear you want otherwise – at least for the first several levels.
Backstory:
Why are you in Port Peril?
Any nautical/piratey history?
Other than those two things, your backstory can be as long/short as you want. I don't require a novel, but if you want to write me one, that's fine.
GM-wise, I'm very slightly on the rules lawyer side when it comes to mechanics. That being said, I hate railroading and do everything I can to encourage players to try whatever they feel like doing. If I like the idea enough, I'll even throw in a circumstance bonus or two. Point being: while I won't ignore RAW, I very much love it when my players attempt crazy shenanigans. Want to pull a Legolas-style Tower Shield ride-down-the-staircase-firing-arrows thing? I'll let you give it a shot. Just realize that you'll probably be having to make a pretty decent Acrobatics check. Unless you have ranks in Ride. :-) My players tend to enjoy themselves, and the PbP format's a great way to make everything more cinematic, so you should be fine.
In terms of activity, I'm a thread lurker. I'm usually able to make multiple substansive post a day, so don't worry about me holding up gameplay. I realize that not everyone has as flexible schedule as I do, however, so I'm really only expecting that you post daily. More is awesome, though. If you don't post for a while, I'll send a PM to check on you, but the game will continue. If we're in combat, I'll act for you.
One other note: Unless you say otherwise, I'll assume you're taking 10 on Perception checks, so I'll mention hidden objects in the room description. If you want to make an additional check yourself, that's fine. Rogue-types: I'll use this rule for trap-checking as well - unless you specifically mention checking an area for traps.
I think that should be everything, but if you have any questions, let me know. Downloading the S&S Players Guide is highly recommended, by the way. Ship Combat, Plunder/Infamy, and crew-building will be extremely important things to be familiar with. I'll keep recruitment open until Sept. 14-15 (unless we need more time). Good luck!

Seems like an excellent opportunity to use this name, need to figure out what I could do with it though, since the only S&S character I've ever built was a gunslinger.
I'm thinking something swashbuckery would fit nicely, unfortunately the Advanced Class Guide playtest hasn't started yet.
Maybe a Kensai Magus.

What is your plan/expectation for frequency of posting, GM? And will you use maps?
And what about guns? Will we have access to gunpowder? Will there be cannons or catapults?
Thanks!
I'm on the forums all the time, so I'll be checking in a lot. As long as the PCs are active, I'll move the story along. Minimum of 1 post a day, but I can easily do more.
Guns will follow the "emerging firearms" rules, so cannons will be an option - albeit very expensive. Since I'm not allowing the Gunslinger class, you'll have to burn a feat to get access to guns, and they won't be available everywhere.

Thats Awesome. I have a trapper in another game we just started. :)

Will firearms be craftable with the gunsmithing feat? This may very well influence the direction I go with my idea.
I'm thinking either an intelligent fighter which later becomes a duelist, a gun-toting rogue, or a kensai magus.

I just noticed, we both have Otter familiars! SWEET! Attack of the otter army!

Concerning undead: I'm okay with necromancers since a ship with a literal 'skeleton crew' would be awesome. However, if the undead horde starts getting out of control, there'll be a sudden shortage of onyx gems. Point being: it's fine in moderation, but zombie Krakens will get you smited. ;-)
Map-wise, I'm still figuring things out. I'll probably do something with Google Docs, but I haven't decided.
EDIT: to clarify, Gunslingers are banned, but guns CAN be crafted via the Gunsmithing feat. Just realize that ammo/additional guns won't be found at your local Magic-mart. Similar thing with cannons. You can put them on your ship, but they'll be VERY expensive.
"No-Eyes" Bellamy |
At the barstool, the weathered old man turns as the barmaid pats him on the back while serving him his ale. You note two eyepatches criscrossing his face as he speaks. He takes a puff of his pipe before jabbing the stem in her approximate direction.
"Watch who yer callin' old, lassie! They's berths a plenty fer a good cook, and I'm one of em!"
He takes a puff.
"And we wouldn't NEED a new berth if'n SOMEONE had stowed their devil-powder some place else than the one with the spark-wasp circus!"
He shudders.
"I'm still picking splinters outa me backside!"

I know!!!! And while they sleep, they can hold hands!! It is going to be sooo much fun to roleplay!

@Marvin Rogers - everything looks fine
@Isabella - everything looks fine
@Alain - everything looks fine
@Jocelyn - everything looks fine
@Galurad - double-check your stats; I think you shorted yourself a point or two
@No-Eyes Bellamy - we're starting at Level 1, so you'll need to drop a level before I can assess you
@Diana Seamyst - everything looks fine
@Everyone - I'm not using Hero Points, so those of you who have them on your sheets should remove them.
I'm really enjoying all the submissions. Choosing's going to difficult. There's still plenty of time for new people, so keep the characters coming. Let's fill up the Port Peril taverns! :-)
Enya Cendrillion |
I LIKE OTTERS! THEY GOOD FOR HUGS!
Mica looks at Cuddles, then darts up Enyas back, hiding in her crimson hair. Mica pokes her head out to watch the big creature while safetly guarded by the impenetrable cocoon that is her mistress' hair.
Enya laughs, melodically."Oh, Mica. You silly girl. She smiles at her friend and pats her head reassuringly. I'm Enya, and this little one is Mica. She isnt big on hugging strangers. You are?
River Calah |
Cuddles : Hello again, Nyx here. Good luck on getting accepted into this.
Enya : That is such a cute image! Also there is a male and female Otter, could be ottery feelings there :P
Whack-a-Rogue : I have finished editing River. I removed the trait that allowed me to Cast Create Water for the Campaign trait and adjusted my back-story. Shame the stats aren't as good as in Cold Outside though.
Seeing this large and rather loud person exclaim that he likes hugging Otters, Arirai climbs up my leg and lays down around my shoulders keeping an eye on the big man. I look as nervous as the Otter at the moment. So many people ... so very loud.
Chumtooth |
I made this fellow specifically to play in a Skulls and Shackles campaign. The race isn't on your list, but kuru are native to The Shackles, and I think he would make an interesting member of the crew, if allowed.
If you turn me down, you won't be the first PbP GM to do so, but I figured I'd give it another shot.
River Calah |
Enya : Just so you know I look Elven, I have the Flesh Chameleon Alternate Racial Trait, so look elvish.
I spot the woman calling out to me, I hear the words most of all, "Another Otter? Company for Arirai?" With that I walk over to her, "Hello, River's my name. This is Arirai and who might your friend be? Such beautiful creatures, are they not?"
Enya Cendrillion |
@River You are so right! She does look like an elf! How come i didnt see that before?! hehe.
She laughs into her hand. "Oh without a doubt! Otters are the most lovely in all the waters! This here's Mica. She has been with me for a while now. She likes my singin', don't ya Mica? She even sings a bit herself!" Enya smiles big, closing her eyes and holds out her hand. "I'm Enya. Its a pleasure!"
Mica slides down Enya's arm, sniffing curiously at the other otter across the way. She tilts her head to the side and blinks, and tries to lift her paw up, attempting to mimic her mistress.
River Calah |
I nervously take Enya's hand and shake it. Still nervous until Mica tries to copy the same posture, that's when Arirai copies the gesture and there are 2 pairs of us shaking hands. That makes me laugh and forget about all the people for a while. Once I have stopped laughing I release the womans hand, "A pleasure indeed! I don't do much singing, I am more of an explorer. I find and translate ancient ruins and texts. What do you do ... apart from sing?"
Enya Cendrillion |
Enya laughs heartily. "Oh, I travel the world singing for my supper. People say my singing makes them feel good and they like the songs I write for them. I have been sailing around for half my life!" She nuzzles Mica lovingly. "You have a new friend to play with now. Why dont you sing him a little song!"
Perform(Mica): 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5
Mica opens her tiny mouth and begins to squeek. When she finishes, she looks expectantly at the others.
"Oh, Mica! Keep practicing!!" Enya sing-songs to Mica. She smiles at everyone with the 'act like you liked it' look.
Your Benevolent Dictator |
The more inebriated tavern souls clap approvingly when the otter starts singing. Some even sing along. Unfortunately, none of them speak Otter (although they seem to think otherwise), so the result is an odd mismash of "99 Bottles of Rum on the Wall" and "Sing Us A Song, Mr. Accordian Man". Yeah, it's not pretty.
PC candidates can react however, of course.
Enya Cendrillion |
Mica leaps around Enya's shoulders happily, making happy otter noises. When she sees River reach out to touch her paw, she nuzzles her hand. "See, Mica! They love you!" She smiles and laughs and sings along with the tavern.
Perform: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
"Oh Mica, how they love you!
Your song, your tone, your soul!
A beautiful companion,
For the young and for the old!
Oh blessed lil' friend
You get better every day!
Just wait and soon you'll be singin'
Just like those water Fey!"
She laughs while she sings her song, fire blazing in her eyes and she sways.
Alain Shadestrom |
Maybe you could open up the discussion thread GM. We can't all get selected but we can at least party until rejection time :-)
Alain is 5'9", 175 lbs, Brown hair and Sea Green Eyes. He has a slightly wispy beard and is wearing spectacles. He's dressed in what he obviously believes to be the height of pirate fashion, frilly white shirt, dark pants tucked into high leather boots and a bright red sash tied around his waist.
He approaches the group nervously asking, "Hi there, I mean Ahoy! Can I buy a round for the table?" He'll wave down a waitress. "Hey! Is that a ferret? I've heard of those."
Alain is a little, well actually a lot, callow. He'll get over it, I promise. He kind of sets my teeth on edge right now :-) Feel free to abuse him!
