Background:

River was the smallest member of her family, she was also the only girl out of her 8 siblings, so even though she was a girl she didn't act like it. The only thing that gave away her gender when she was younger was her weak body, but she learned that quickly after a couple of scuffs with her brothers. So she learnt how to move quicker and how to dodge the incoming blows, but she was still no boy nor warrior. It was when she was in her 20's that her parents realised that she had a gift, she had a knack for soaking up knowledge ... they had a smart child.

After that moment she was sent to school, which cost her family every penny that they owned, but they were happy; she could get a decent job and get the money back easily enough, and she was happy as she was learning. It was about 15 years of learning when she found it, a young otter cub starving and dying ... she was drawn to it, so she caught some fish and fed the cub. After that she kept on finding herself returning to the cub during her breaks, but she knew she would stand out so she found a way to change the colour of her skin and she started to appear as one of the land-walkers. While she was studying the cub would lay across her shoulders and they build a friendship.

After a couple of years the otter had grown into a young adult, but it still refused to leave her. One day she came to her studies upset; as she had had a quarrel with her family, they wanted her to get a job but she wanted to continue to do her studies. There was a heated discussion and River had left in tears and the first place she had returned to was the little grove with her Otter cub ... it was then that she realised she had never named her friend. She sat there in tears, looking into the Otters through hazy eyes; the Otter was also crying, when it happened, she heard a splash and saw a brother of hers through his spear at the Otter. He was shouting, "Demon, possessor!" and through another one, the Otter ran up to River and climbed on her shoulders cowering. A sudden rage took hold of her and the next thing she knew there was a huge wave ... no not a wave, a tsunami! it crashed into her brother and split before hitting her.

Her brother was dead and the lake was swirling so she dived down to her home and found that her entire village had been wiped out, by the Tsunami. Then she heard it, a squeak ... the Otter was still on her shoulders and ... smiling, she realised that she felt good too. She swam back up to the grove and cried again, "Don't cry, you have to control your anger. You are the spirit of the moon, you control the waters!" River looked around to see who was talking but the only other living thing around was the Otter ... Nah, it couldn't be. "Look for the ruins at the bottom of the lake, the forbidden cave. In there you will find a way to control your powers." Yet again River looked around and this time looked at the Otter, not taking her eyes off of it. "Hello, my name is Arirai, I am here to help you. In the ruin you will find some writings, those writings you will have to read and they will tell you how to control your power, which is why I am here. I have been sent to be a focus for you, to make it easier for you." The Otter was talking to her ... then it went black.

The next thing she knew she was waking up at the bottom of the sea, next to the cave ... was it true, did everything really happen? She looked around, but as she feared her village was gone ... so she went inside and spent the next week learning how to translate the strange writings until she could read it and to her dismay it was only a part of the answer. She returned to the grove where Arirai was waiting, "You have to find the others too, I will lead you" She spent the next few decades of her life finding the ruins and reading their secrets, the last one she found was about a mile off shore from a port called Port Peril. Just as she was looking for the ruin she found it, but this one seemed different and strange somehow ... the language was different! A different set of ruins to find, could this be a coincidence, that another set would present themselves just as she was about to finish finding her original ones?

"Now these ones too, don't worry I am still here for you." With Arirai's words she decided to stay and learn this language, after learning the other language this one seemed easier and didn't take as much time. After translating the ruin and learning its secrets she started to look for the next but didn't know where to look. Then one day she heard some sailors talking about a man who had a map to another ruin and he was selling it at a tavern in the Port, a Tavern called Formidably Maid. Well she didn't need to wait for Arirai's advice, she swam around to a point where no-one could see her emerge from the water and went to the tavern. Once there she met with the man and was given a drink, it would be rude not to drink it when completing the deal. So drank it she did and then ... nothing, it went black ...
