Cool. That's a serious time commitment for an AP. What are we saying 4 months per module? Or longer? That doesn't put me off.

Sadly I'm currently in a Curse of the Crimson Throne PbP, so don't think I would want to do two side by side. Don't feel like I'm saying don't run it, but but I'd sit it out.

Kjaz that game of yours is interesting. What's the mechanic - is it narrative only, with no rolls just DM mediation?

It's...a mixture of map based tactics and RPing.
The Mechanics
* There are 3 teams, each with 3+ players in them.
* Teach turn is 1 week.
* Each turn, every player can make move on the map 3 spaces and make 1 attack. This can't take you through enemy held territory, but you can attack enemy held territory.
* In addition, by playing (as well as taking/holding territory) you get resources. These can be used to do special projects.
Special Projects
* This can take the form of premade projects. Such as hiring mercenaries, hiring spies, or investing in a location so that it produces more income.
* You can also propose to the GM your own special projects. This is done by writing up what you want to do, how you plan to do it, and how many resources you want to spend. He can then say yes/no/modify it.
* Often part of the 'cost' of special projects is writing a story.
The RPing
* You make a character, who is your army general.
* As the general, you can write letters to figureheads. This can be your faction figurehead, or NPCs.
* Doing this can net you additional resources, extra strength for your reports, etc.
* You can also talk to other factions. In this campaign there probably won't be much diplomacy as the factions hate each other and there are only 3 factions. But it is possible.
An Aside
This is a small campaign. This group used to be part of a much, much larger one. The biggest campaign held consisted of 6 factions, and totaled over a hundred players. There were also much more intricate mechanics, which included things such as dueling between generals. There was also an entire team of GMs, each who RP'd certain faction figureheads and NPCs.
The campaigns died off around the time that GamesWorkshop exploded the setting that the factions were part of...and when our old website went down, taking everything we had with it. The two together killed the campaigns. What you are seeing here are a few of the players trying to revitalize what we once had going.
Currently
We have 1 GM, and 10 players. 4 in the orc team, 3 in the human merchant team, 3 in the dwarf team. I'm on the dwarf team, so of course I'd like assistance in that...but I'd just be happy to bring new people into the group.
Oh...and the story...
Centuries ago the dwarven hold of Ekrund fell to an army of orcs and goblins. It sits on very valuable land from a trading perspective, and because of that the mercantile city of Marienburg has sent an expedition to conquer the ancient hold. It is their hope to turn it into a trading outpost, and to thoroughly loot the place of its dwarven artifacts.
The dwarves, were of course, horrified at the thought. Even worse, the Marienburgers added another insult when they sent letters to the dwarven kings, saying that if the dwarves helped them conquer Ekrund, they would give the dwarves a discount when trading. Three of the surviving dwarven holds raised an army to take Ekrund back, not only because it is theirs, but also out of spite against the Marienburgers.
And of course, there are the orcs and goblins. While the hold itself is still full of feuding goblins, there is an orc army massing outside of the gate. They have stopped squabbling long enough to band together to kick the goblins out. The fact that armies of humans and dwarves are descending on the hold has just enticed the orcs even more, because they live for war.
And for those unfamiliar with the warhammer orcs and dwarves, they are a bit different from pathfinder.
* Orcs and goblins: They grow instead of being born. They live to fight, as the more they do the more spores they release. The more an orc fights, the bigger it gets. Usually they fight amongst themselves enough not to be a major threat, but once in awhile a warboss emerges who can unite them. And that is when kingdoms fall. Orcs are not 'evil' in the traditional sense. They (usually) don't fight for the purpose of causing pain. They do so because it is their nature and because they enjoy it. It is said that for an orc, a day which begins with killing your best mate and ends with getting your arm cut off is considered to be a good day. They enjoy fighting dwarves the most because the dwarves always put up a good fight.
Goblins are like orcs, only rather than enjoying a good fight, they are cruel, malicious, and cowardly. Often the brains behind the outfit, if they can avoid getting killed out of boredom by the larger orcs.
* Dwarves: Like Pathfinder dwarves, only dial the grudges up to 11. They literally cannot forget an insult or a slight against them, and will hold a grudge for generations. Stubborn to the point where they would be considered insane by just about any human. The best way I have of describing them is this: imagine the times when you were the most angry or the most embarrassed. Now imagine if those feelings never faded, and you were stuck feeling like that for your entire life.
This is best shown by the Slayer Cult. When a dwarf is shamed, or fails to fulfill an oath, his life is over. Rather than commit suicide, he will take the slayer oath. He will cut his hair until only a thin strip is left, and using troll fat he will make it into a mowhawk. All of his hair will be dyed orange, his body covered in tattoos, and he will wander off to find a heroic death. Armor is never worn and pants are optional. They tend to gather together into warbands, competing with each other to see who can kill the largest monsters, and more importantly, who can be killed by said monsters. Because no dwarf would ever do anything but his best, some of the greatest warriors (and greatest failures) in the world are slayers.

Hi Khaz
Sounds interesting, and I'll be interested to hear how it progresses, but that's not for me. I'm up for short descriptive RP, but not crafting stories. I wouldn't be up to standard for the group, if that's their thing. Thanks for the link though.
Louxman |
I've been playing on the boards for a couple of years now (I think?) One of the first games I was part of is still going from strength to strength (in fact we started a second game with the same group of players) But every other game I have been part of has faltered and then failed. Once you get a good group I say hold on to it for dear life, but don't flog a dead horse. If it's not flowing it's not flowing.
The problem is I think the problem is self perpetuating. Once a group starts to go bad people put less effort in because its probably not going to work. Equally with building characters, I'm so used to putting effort into characters only to have them wasted (or in need of a rebuild at least) after a week, it's very disheartening...
I would be very happy to carry something on with this group, don't really mind what to be honest but I think we had something good. <sad violin music> if Flan is willing to GM I'll bite his hand off.
Thanks for the heads up Khaz I was tempted when I saw that in recruitment, but me and Warhammer are on an extended break.

I'm with you Louxman: I'll hold Flan down and you bite his hand off.
Oh hang on though - Flan can you DM one-handed?

Flan you're a star. Thankyou.
Do we need an extra character to replace your Druid?

Sure. I'll set up a recruitment thread to look for a woodsy, support character. I am going ahead and starting a new campaign thread now. I will post the link here.
GM Mason |
If you guys want to start playing, I have started the RPing in the new gameplay thread in the above campaign. Recruitment thread is up as well.
Feel free to add two traits to your current characters and background skills. I have offered that in the recruitment thread.

So I assume we are not going to wait to see if RL just interrupted OTG?
Up to y'all. He posted that if players didn't post they would be kicked. In my experiences, games that started like always ended badly.
Arun Smithson |
If OTG had posted a 1 minute post to say "hold on, I'll be back in X days" I would have the had patience to give him a chance. It's about communication and respect.
