Stali looks at Andrietta, puzzled a moment, but stays where he is -- watching and waiting. I don't see anything...did I miss something again?
stealth, if possible, cover from sides of the trap: 10 + 9 = 19 Since he was the one who opened the trap door, I'm not sure if it is possible at this point.
GM: If he can make another perception roll while Andrietta is acting, feel free to roll it for him.
| GM Hmm |
As the rope is lowered, the shivering humanoid looks up at you. His eyes are wide, dark and scared. Now that Andrietta has pointed him out, the rest of you can just barely see him. Nearly naked except for a grey loincloth, skinny and hairless, with skin that blends perfectly with his surroundings, he wraps his arms tightly around himself like he can’t stay warm.
“D-d-don’t know whether it’s b-b-better to d-d-die d-d-down here or c-c-come up. You g-g-gonna hang me?”
Gallako Tenkarlyion

In Tengu
"There is some strange humanoid thing in the pit. Presumably a murderer and thief.
Andrietta, what are you doing? Right now we have that thing at our mercy. That seems like a teally good thing to me.
Lets just order it to surrender. And shoot it if it doesn't"
Andrietta Ebonfeather
|
"Child, if we were going to kill you we wouldn't be giving you a chance to climb out of this mess, would we? Now get your tail up the rope before I have to come down there and push you up it, you hear?"
Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
It may not seem like a *huge* threat, but then Andrietta IS trying to be nice about it... for the moment.
Gallako Tenkarlyion

"First, drop any weapons. Or we will shoot you. Or at least I will"
With that Gallako aims his crossbow at the figure below
To Andrietta, in Tengu, but NOT at all quietly
"We REALLY have to work on your sharing skills. The motto of the Society is "cooperate", NOT "keep important information to yourself and try and decide everything yourself"

The grandmother's tone is a bit perplexed and exasperated, but she doesn't huff in frustration or even 'put on airs' of superiority.

"Do you have a name, skulk?" Stali calls down to the creature. "Oh, and you best come up before Andrietta carries through on her promise." as he gestures with a claw towards Andrietta.
| GM Hmm |
“Okay.” A short sword and a pair of daggers clatter to the floor. Where he had them hidden, you have no idea. Then, still trembling, he raises his hands high in the air before grabbing the rope. “Rogi. I’m c-c-called Rogi.”
Agnes clenches her fist. “If that gray freak conspired with that feathered hussy to kill my Archie, I’ll tear him apart MYSELF!”
The skulk immediately lets go of the rope and presses himself back against the wall, eyes wide.
Gallako Tenkarlyion
|
I'm not sure if that last comment in Tengu was just in character or not. But if you look back at your post, you did NOT tell us about the skulk, you just told us to lower a rope with absolutely no explanation
"Yes, climb up. AFTER dropping any weapons. We're not going to kill you out of hand"
Andrietta Ebonfeather
|
Andrietta holds up one finger, pointing down into the pit. She then holds one finger to the point of her beak in the way she's been trained to indicate silence
Andrietta does NOT have K: Local trained. Therefore, there's no way she could have gotten any more information than 'There's a person in the pit'. She was trying to be quiet about lowering the rope to see what the humanoid person's reaction was. She relayed ALL the information she had aside from the apparent DTs the poor guy is going through.
"Agnes, dear. The child doesn't look capable of doing much of any sort of damage right now. Please help us reach justice and not rush to judgement without all the facts on the table, okay?"
Stali One-Penny
|
Looking across the pit at Agnes, Stali says "I am almost certain that isn't the case." He may be involved in killing your husband, but evidence suggests Jherizhana wasn't part of it. Now I just need to find a way to explain that to you sometime!
Looking down at Rogi, he adds "Might as well come up and explain what you were doing, Rogi."
Looking across at the rest of the flock, he speaks in Tengu. "Might want to check for blood on him. With the chameleon ability, I'm not certain we would see any blood. He is probably hungry and thirsty as well, spending that long trapped in the pit."
| GM Hmm |
Rogi climbs up, slowly. He’s trembling so hard that he can barely make it up the rope. As he climbs up, the pattern of his skin shifts to reflect his surroundings, but you can all see he's injured if you look closely. "What d-d-do you want to know?"
Andrietta Ebonfeather
|
Once the chameleonic fellow gets close to the top, Andrietta reaches out with her hand to give him help getting up, then takes a blanket out of her bag and drapes it over Rogi.
"How badly are you hurt?" That was probably not the question Rogi was expecting to hear.
She'll leave any interrogation to the rest of the far more capable members of the party in that regard, ready to provide healing via a standard issue wand if necessary.
Stali One-Penny
|
Stali allows Andrietta to get Rogi to the top of the pit and start looking him over before asking "I think we would also like to know who was with you, and who planned this Rogi."
GM: You can either roll my sense motives +6 or have me take 10 on them, whichever works better for you. Consider myself very suspicious of everything Rogi says. If there is room, Stali would inch along the edge to get back on the same side of the pit as the rest of the group.

I interpreted that completely differently. At the player level, I sincerely apologize. At the character level. I think it plausible that the character also misinterpreted things :-). If you're ok with that

All good, Gallako. Was trying to be clever and should have probably done a whole 'Bluff' thing and put it under a spoiler and all but didn't.
The grandmother squints a bit as she watches the shivering young skulk and will attempt to poke him once with her healing wand.
CLWW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

| GM Hmm |
A few seconds after you pull him out, the trap door slams shut again and locks in place. Rogi starts at the noise, but takes a deep, relieved breath as the healing hits him, but he continues to shiver, and is covered with a light coating of sweat. He keeps looking longingly towards the door currently blocked by Agnes's guards and then back at all of you.
"My t-t-tribe, the N-nisku, does some f-favors for a g-group of humans. We do f-f-favors, they k-keep us in Sh-sh-shiver. So Onamae and K-k-kymeth, they t-t-tell us to c-c-come here, t-t-take k-k-key, smash and t-t-take stuff."
Bluff: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4 Wow.
He's so bad at lying, he's practically transparent!
He's speaking honestly, but he's clearly leaving out a few details, and badly wants to escape. He'd run if he weren't surrounded with the way blocked.

"Who has the key now, and how many came here with you?"
With a somewhat worried look, Stali looks towards Andrietta and Gallako. In Tengu he asks "What is wrong with this person, and what is shiver?"
He then focuses back on Rogi.
"Do you know the names of the humans that you are doing favors for, or can you describe them?"
Gallako Tenkarlyion

"Where did you get the key from? Who, exactly, gave it to you?
And who was it who slit the guards throat? And WHY did you kill him?

Andrietta pulls out a different wand and attempts to use it on the somewhat improved skulk.
Wand of Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3
School conjuration (healing); Level cleric 2, druid 2, paladin 1
Casting Time 3 rounds
Components V, S
Range touch
Target creature touched
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
Lesser restoration dispels any magical effects reducing one of the subject's ability scores or cures 1d4 points of temporary ability damage to one of the subject's ability scores. It also eliminates any fatigue suffered by the character, and improves an exhausted condition to fatigued. It does not restore permanent ability drain.
| GM Hmm |
Rogi looks confused. “The k-k-key? Ona p-p-probably still has it. She d-didn't t-tell me where sh-she got it from. Sh-she just had it. It was her, me, Zakhar and Tiru. Ona c-came with us so w-we d-d-didn't mess up. Only we d-d-did.” He looks to the trapdoor.
At Gallako's questions, the skulk shrinks. “The first p-part was okay. The smashing. We c-caught the k-kid. Then Ona t-t-told us to f-f-find the others and--” He breaks off, swallowing as he stares up at the glaring guards. Hari in particular is clenching her fists so tightly the knuckles are white.
- A highly addictive drug, Shiver causes a user to fall into a deep sleep and experience vivid dreams, during which they constantly shake which earned the drug its moniker
- Shiver’s main ingredient is venom from a Dream Spider, native to the Mwangi Expanse; thus Shiver is expensive to make and not common outside of major cities.

I’ll try to get to the rest of the actions / questions in later posts, but this is a good break point.
Gallako Tenkarlyion

"Who and what is Ona? And who killed the guard?"
Do you prefer us to mark Tengu as I am doing ("In Tengu") or use a spoiler box?
In Tengu
"Shiver is a fairly expensive drug that I am surprised to see here as its more common in large cities. Addictive, gives dreams and the shivers."
Stali One-Penny
|
Stali notices the reactions of the guards, especially Hari. I really hope they have enough self-control to allow us to proceed with questioning. I think Rogi is already scared enough, we don't need him to panic.
While Gallako is questioning Rogi, Stali calls out in Tengu "Sarano, do you think you could discreetly point out to the guards and the widow the lack of blood on this creature? Perhaps you could convince them to be a little less intimidating, so that we can question it."
Stali will intersperse questions as there is time. He still wants the names and/or descriptions of the humans.
"What exactly where you supposed to do in the vault?
"Where did Ona meet you with the key?"
He is going to try and step the creature through exactly what happened at each stage of the robbery.
| GM Hmm |
As Andrietta hits him with the wand, he blinks in surprise, his eyes widening. The shivering slows and his speech evens out. "Onamae met us with the k-key in the woods. Then we ran to the Locked Box. After we c-caught the kid, she told us to f-find any others that might be hiding and b-bring them back, b-but there weren't any. She was c-cursing. Pissed. I asked why that w-wasn't a good thing, n-not having lots of guards to fight. She whacked me on the head and t-told me I wasn't paid to think. So she sent us d-down to the V-vault, s-said she had t-tasks to do. She was going to m-meet us down there. We were supposed to g-grab expensive stuff until she t-told us what to take, but then Tiru started yelling 'bout people coming, so Zakhar and I ran." He looks down at the trapped door. "Or tried to."
K'Kei Hikaru
|
"What happened to your friend Zakhar?"
Andrietta Ebonfeather
|
The grandmother will nod quietly at the young skulk, grateful that the wand appeared to work.
She'll give Rogi another tap. Not because she's being selfish, but the child is attempting to be 'good' here, and not just because guards are watching.
Wand of Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3 Two charges used thus far.
She doesn't, however, step in the way of what the rest of the party is doing, since they are asking the right questions.
| GM Hmm |
Andrietta, I'm giving you the opportunity to reverse that last charge. Lesser Restoration charges at your level are precious things, besides, I think your character might wish to ascertain if there was ability damage to heal in this case before applying a second charge.
The skulk looks at Hikaru, confused. "I don't know. She was b-behind me, and I was running and then I fell and the t-trap door slammed shut, and in the c-chaos... I don't know."
Andrietta Ebonfeather
|
Andrietta nods quietly and listens to the sneaky kid speak, watching the guards.
"Do you remember anything about the humans that your tribe helps out? Do they have a particular color to their hair, or names? Do you remember anything that seemed not-right during all of this? Do your people get forced into doing things like this often?"
Grandmother, this child could have been born tengu and had the SAME circumstances thrust upon them. Please help us find a way to save him and his kin.
| GM Hmm |
"I d-don't know anything about the humans. I never see them," Rogi admits. "Just that Onamae and K-Kymeth work for them. They have g-good jobs in t-town. They d-don't live with us anymore. They give us jobs too and b-bring us b-back shiver and then we dream of better things." He wraps the blanket tightly around himself. "Wish I had some now. Wish I was b-back home."

He gives you directions to Nisku village which is located only four miles outside of town, hidden in the thick of the woods. "But if we see you c-coming, you'll never see us..." he says, not without a hint of pride in his voice. He closes his eyes, and for a moment his skin shifts to a dark green leafy pattern, making him look like a humanoid bush. Then he opens his eyes, and once again blends in with the stonework of the exterior vault. "In the w-woods, we d-disappear."
"I d-don't know where Onamae and K-kymeth live. They d-don't tell us anything, b-because we're addled shiverheads." He emphasizes the last two words, as if reciting something that he's been called, over and over.

Andrietta Ebonfeather

Andrietta WAS okay with the different questions going back and forth, and the conversation... that is, until Gallako makes that comment.
The grandmother places the palm of her hand holding the restorative wand over the top of her beak, rubbing the join with the flesh of her skull in an almost human fashion.
"It is kind of important to note, though, that the Nisku have been in the area long enough to have a village in the woods, and they have a relationship with at least some humans here in town. That doesn't sound like they work with the carnival, but given their natural talents, they're probably not seen, so they could have been doing things like this for YEARS without being detected. Theft, that is, not the murdering. Did you kill anyone or see anyone killed in this building or out in the woods recently, child?"
K'Kei Hikaru
|
Hikaru listens aptly as Grandmother gently questions the skulk, though hehas little more to offer at this point himself....
Stali One-Penny
|
Stali's feathers ruffle slightly at Gallako's outburst. Concerned, he watches the guards reactions -- especially Hari who already seemed on edge. He nods in agreement as Andrietta gives Gallako a mild scolding.
I have to agree with Andrietta, we shouldn't be making these sort of accusations without evidence -- especially given how eager Agnes and her guards are to find an immediate culprit.
| GM Hmm |
The skulk, more surprised than not, opens his mouth as Sarano inserts the stick in it. "Uh... Bhy be doing dis?" he slurs, as he tries in vain to talk around the stick that is depressing his tongue.
Then he pulls his mouth away, looking straight at Gallako. "I d-didn't k-kill him! I d-didn't see it!" Then he looks away. "B-but I g-guessed that what Onamae would do b-before she sent us away. Why else w-would she want the g-guards here? B-but I d-don't know why. You ask questions, you g-get hit and no jobs or no sh-shiver either."
"I d-don't know about deaths in the w-woods. B-but the k-keys Ona had... they had blood on them."
Sarano Snowfeather

Clicking her tongue, Sarano will withdraw, "he'll be fine, he's just drug addled but the symptoms are coming down, whether he gets better is his choice now,"
She'll further withdraw herself to watch how the interactions will play out.

Nodding, Stali says "Right, just follow orders so you don't get hit. What were those orders with respect to the vault?" He gestures behind him to the vault doors as he asks the question.
| GM Hmm |
Rogi counts off the orders on his fingers. "Go in, steal v-valuables, make a mess and then help Ona c-carry out what she was looking for!"
Agnes crosses her arms. "Are we done with this see-through thug? I say toss him back in the pit and call the sheriff! And not gently either!"
Chak Yuen Chen

Chak shook his head and clicked his beak, before preening his feathers to remove a few crumbs of pie that had not shaken themselves loose during the day.
"Those crumbs can really irritate, aggravate, and chafe."
"As for our captive, prisoner, and detainee, I suspect he has a similar effect on some of our guards. Their emotions are rubbed raw by the untimely death, demise, and passing of their fellow guard. But as little use as he is going to be to finding the culprit, throwing, tossing, or discarding him isn't going to do anyone any good. We at least have a name and that is more than we had before, earlier, and previously. Let him be taken, under guard, watch, and sentinel under the care of the healer, both for the safety of the town and the others. Maybe once the drug has worn off he will be able to recall, remember, and recollect more details."

Andrietta Ebonfeather

"Agnes, it sounds very much like someone is trying to frame you for the murder of your husband and the guard if the plan to blame the circus falls through.
That won't serve the cause of justice on this for either you, Archivin, Rogi, or Daro Manetti, and you know it. It'd help you feel good in the short term, but there'd still be all the garbage that's going around on this.
You're bright, your guards are dedicated and handling this in a lot more professional fashion than some I've seen in my life, and we'd all benefit by that approach continuing.
That being said, let's keep Rogi here for a few moments while we open the vault, on the off-chance his partner is still in there. He can attest to our impartiality and desire to see this all sorted out."
Ready to pop the hatch, etc, Andrietta back up front with shield and ready for just about anything once more.
