GM Hmm, you are doing excellently. Thank Gozreh you are running in PBP. IRL was hectic...I had two pages of notes and a chart going.
Quenly |
If I ever run this, I think it'll be in pbp.
GM Hmm |
I’ll be running IRL in a month or so over two sessions. That way we can do the final ritual and fight scene justice. This thing is insane!

But having a blast though, right?!?!
The PbP format has allowed for in depth and creative role play, especially in the mindscapes. I feel that at a table, much of this would come down to straight die rolling. Much of what I read in our game has reaffirmed the benefits of the style of play. We are exploring the capstone event for the Scarab Sages and giving it the due it deserves (thanks to your leadership Hmm). You have set a tone that invites players to push themselves in their ROLE-play. Remember the old saying: Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.
Once again, PbP FOR THE WIN!!!
GM Hmm |
Yes, having a blast. I have most definitely leveled up as a GM doing this! I love that my party has been as gung ho about this as I am!
Hmm
GM Hmm |
Now that Black Moon is finally down, here’s what those gems were giving her:
Sinuhotep - Amethyst: Tahari can cast her spells without verbal or somatic components.
Tahoni Kepsu - Diamond: Tahari gains 100 temporary hit points at the beginning of each round. These last for 1 round and stack with other sources of temporary hit points, such as vampiric touch.
Torch - Emerald: The saving throw DCs of Tahari’s spells with the curse or disease descriptor increase by 5.
Padrym - Onyx: Tahari can cast spells with a casting time of 1 standard action as though their casting time were 1 move action.
Amenopheus - Sapphire: When attempting any saving throw, Tahari can roll twice and take the better result. If she also draws power from the spinel sage jewel, she instead automatically succeeds at all saving throws.
Mnemoset - Spinel: When attempting any saving throw, Tahari can roll twice and take the better result. If she also draws power from the sapphire sage jewel, she instead automatically succeeds at all saving throws.
Dhiara - Topaz: Tahari’s spells and abilities affect her targets as though her alignment were neutral or neutral evil, whichever is more advantageous to her.
Taking out those gems and freeing the sages was the right move.
Eadie Navhelan |
Wow! The Diamond + Sapphire + Spinel together would make her just about unstoppable. Does Black Moon have SR too?
I would have difficulty running this IRL, but would have a go in PbP.
The only thing that would give me pause is … I’d want to be careful to pick an experienced group. I imagine it would be pretty easy to slaughter an unprepared party in the first fight, let alone this one!
Dunia Mbani |
Wow... go team gems!
Quenly |
Are we waiting on Dunia?
Let's bring it home pathfinders!
GM Hmm |
No. We’re waiting on me.
We may also. Be waiting on Dunia, but we’re really waiting on me. It’s a crazy day, but I’ll try to get some posts in this afternoon.

By the way, I don't know if you can tell, but I've expanded all the mindscapes. Most of the ones that came with this scenario were 3-4 sentences long. In PBP though, we can really set a scene.
Eadie Navhelan |
We can tell.
The thought and care you've taken with your posts shines through :)
Dunia Mbani |
I certainly suspected we were seeing some embellishment. It is really appreciated. The extra care and attention needed for a scenario this intense is exactly why I wanted to play this one in PbP (and why I JUMPED on playing at your table when the Outpost sheet first opened up :p )

Well, this was something that I viewed as a chance to really level up my GM skills. And there’s so much richness here in this scenario — plus juicy back stories on all the known sages including Mnemoset (the spinel ACG sage).
I will be having my 5 star confirmation game at PaizoCon, but this was the hardest thing I’ve done since Overseeing Cosmic Captive. It should count as a Special! I am really glad that I signed up for this one, though. So many places where I could add in small details.

I’m looking forward to meeting you too! Is it odd that I keep refreshing in hopes of seeing Fendel’s update?
Hmm
Fendel, CSI: Absalom |
Aww! Thanks Hmm. (no pressure though, right?) I have to say, it has been wonderful seeing your embellishments. You have set a tone that invites others to join in, take chances, and/or just be creative. I'm so glad I snooped around the sign up sheet and spotted the opening. I would not have wanted to play this with any other group. It has been amazing and a resounding reminder of just versatile the Play-by-Post format can be.
Hmm, I plan to be at PiazoCon this year. Any chance you know what you are running yet?
Quenly |
Being able to embellish, and add lore and content to the bones of a scenario, is the big draw of pbp for me. (And may I add that you embellish very well indeed Hmm!). It's something there is rarely time for at a face-to-face table. The format gives both players and GM time to go and look things up, which I find especially helpful as a GM - both for rules and for lore.

A thought. Arianna and Eadie are going to be at PaizoCon as well. If you guys want to do Solstice C and can find three others there’s a chance you could muster for my table if they allow GMs to turn in tickets like they did at GenCon. Unfortunately last year at PaizoCon they did not allow this... So if you three are interested, this is something we’d have to touch base with Walter Sheppard et al. Upon.

Quenly |
Quenly was originally Silver Crusade. But during Season 6, when there was a free faction swap available because of numerous faction changes, I played the Destiny of the Sands trilogy (at levels 2-3). This persuaded me to switch. Scarab Sages is a much better fit for Quenly.

Not worried about recording precise expenditure on the Chronicle, everything is on my pbp and paper character sheets and the ITS. At any rate, Quenly is down to 7gp after spending. He also spent 2PP this scenario (potion of remove blindness/deafness).
For completeness, here is my spending:
Quenly's final preparations:
Wand of Break Enchantment (CL10, 5 charges), 3000gp
Wand of Lesser Restoration (10 charges) 900gpPuzzle Book, 45gp (boon reduces cost of mundane items in Garundi cities)
Antiplague x2, 90gp
Masterwork eyeglasses (perception) 45gp
Holy water x2 45gpPotion of Remove Blindness 2PP (really should have got one ages ago, Quenly is very reliant on sight)
That makes 4125gp and 2PP
I'll convert 200gp to Diamond Dust for restoration purposes and be left with 7gp and some loose change.

I’ll e-mail you my e-mail address, GM Hmm
A player on my Outpost table won the ‘2’ boon, Rufeo which is 'share the wealth – equipment.' It’s pretty good.
If you guys want to do Solstice C and can find three others …
Oh yeah, that would be great!
I plan on catching up with the two VLs of Seattle (I am in another PbP with them), who are attending Paizocon. They might be interested in playing on your table as well, Hmm.
I’ll PM them and see what’s what.

Thanks for marking the Scarab Sentinels progress, but as much as Dunia could use the extra cash, I think I should only receive the OOS gold.
Quenly |
Thanks Hmm for a great game, and thanks also to my fellow players for making this memorable and so much fun :)
That is a sweet chronicle sheet! Quenly gets his wish of being a Jewelled Sage. I've already gone and posted over at the "chronicling the salvation of the sages" thread.
I've also bought the scenario. I will possibly run it here on Flaxseed in a few weeks, and would love to borrow your slides if I do, if that's ok with you GM.
I hope to play with you guys again sometime. I won't be at Paizocon, but I will be at Paizocon UK if any of you make the trip!
Fendel, CSI: Absalom |
I had a great time with all of you. Hmm, your extra effort really raised the bar for everyone. Thanks to all of you for bringing your best. Well done.
as much as Dunia could use the extra cash, I think I should only receive the OOS gold.
I was 9th playing up as well.
Quick question. Were I to every switch factions to Scarab Sages, would the Jewelled Sage boon open up to me? Just curious how that would work down the line should Fendel ever consider retirement.
GM Hmm |
Boo on me. I will try to get the revised chronicle sheets out later this weekend (or tomorrow for Dunia and Fendel.
Fendel: The faction switch is expensive (unless you have one of GenCon’s retrain boons) but if you want, I will issue your revised chronicle without it crossed off, so that if you later swing the change you can earn that boon. Keep in mind that to become a sage you will still have to get 10 boxes checked off (which requires two seasons of faction card checkoffs.) They did not make this easy.
Hmm

Fair enough. I’d had the idea of ending with one last filked GM scene, but with PaizoCon imminent, it’s not happening. Imagine all the Sages joining you to ‘Dance like an O-sir-i-on’ and that will be about right for the tone I imagined in my head!
It was a pleasure GMing for you all!
