"Very well, sanctuary first and then beacon, lead the way, lad!" says Yarask to Othdan.

I must admit I never started counting the money, I assumed we were pooling it all togheter. As for Othdan and the beacon, shouldn't we check the place first? It's too simple, this may very well be an ambush...

Perception check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17


The Temple is empty of people. A search turns up 1d4 ⇒ 1 CLW potions and 1d2 ⇒ 1 CMW potions.

Othdan suggests leaving coins behind.

Yarask finds the beacon soaked in a strongly combustible mixture. It may burn quickly when lit.

"What the f%÷= is that stuff!!" Othdan queries.

"Anything to light from a distance?"


Augier leaves behind 300 gold for both potions. I'm sure that this will be enough.

Anyone need to quaff the potions?

Umm.. I don't know anything about alchemy or stuff so I don't know what it might be. We do have an alchemist fire that we could heave at in it case it explodes.

We have 2 alchemist fires.

Before going through the gate, Tegnar drinks his potion. Afterwards, he looks at the empty vial with a look of disappointment. "This one must not have been made properly or was watered down. I hardly feel any better. I think I better try another one."

"That's a little better. At least I think I can take a hit from one of those orcs now."

Standing at the last beacon, he adds "We best be careful, it could be a set up by the orcs for us to blow ourselves up. I agree, let's try to light it from a distance. Anyone have a torch we can throw at it, or even a lit arrow would be better."


Augier takes out a torch, lights it with his flint and steal and hands it to Tengar. Lets all stand back

Yarask takes out an arrow out and starts wrapping a piece of cloth taken from a torch on its tip. Then he dips the arrow into the combustible and signals to the others to get far away from the beacon:"Better to take no chances with this stuff. I know there's a trap, somewhere, this is way too easy, so let's lit the beacon from afar! Please get the cloth lit and then let's start running..."

Once the arrow's tip is buring Yarask sends it flaying towards the flammable liquid and tries to move further away.

Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Consider Yarask at the limit of the first range increment for the bow, so 110 feet away from the beacon


Augier stads back from the pile of wood with the others.

As Yarask fires the arrow, Tegnar stands behind him and faces away from the beacon, with his weapon ready, watching for an ambush.

If we are 60' or more from any buildings, I will ready my crossbow. If closer, my longspear.

The flaming arrow sets the pile alight, a large woosh causing an incredible surge of heat. The townspeople show up, seeing the critical beacon lit.

"Where do we go?"

Ruby shows up. "There is a catapult firing boulders and explosives into the town at the Barterstones. Can you get it and the giant marching on the town?"


Let us go get that catapult then. Augier heads out with the others.

"Catapult it is! Let's go!" Long hammer at the ready Dolgrym leads the way.


Arriving at the Barterstones, the orcs have cleverly set up a catapult and are heaving projectiles using the rocks as shelter from direct fire.

You cannot see the orcs, but you do know they are on the other side of the rocks manning the catapult. Map is updated, the rocks block Line of Sight.

As you arrive, another large boulder goes hurling into the town You may move yourselves on the map. Note that stealth requires half speed to not trigger a penalty.

Othdan mentions: "If you go around one way, maybe I go around the other?"

Party up, you are placed on the map.

Dolgrym does his best to quietly move around the right of the rocks.

How high is the barricade to the west of the rocks?


I utterly forgot to check that I messed up my stealth roll
Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14


Approaching on the left, only one attacker can see one of the orcs in the catapult from the barricade, the others would have to hope the orcs left the catapult and came out to target them.

perception: 3d20 ⇒ (15, 7, 19) = 41

The dwarven approach is by no means stealty, kicking rocks up as they close. Othdan shrugs and heads around to the right of the rocks. He is fairly quite in a crouch, but is moving slowly.

stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

During the stealthy approach, two more flaming boulders fly over the walls, the orcs chortle with glee. The leader says: "Let's use the pigs next!!"

The left most square by the barricade can target one of the orcs, and he would be considered to have hard cover.

I see the map ends there, but can't we move further west along the barricade to get a clear shot?

"Let's see if they can take as well as they can give lads!" yells Yarask pointing his bow at the orcs and letting an arrow fly loose.

Augier moves up to the barricade


Yarask sinks an arrow lightly into the orc at the rear. The orc turns and tosses another grenade, like the one that landed at the barricade.

The large clay grenade with the fiery decorations lands and sinks into the base of the barricade just under Yarask. The other two fire a pair of pigs into the town. The large pigs squeal as they are launched through the air.

Dwarves up

The area to the left of the barricades, a large forbidding cliff, seems quite inhospitable.


Someone call the SPCA!

Augier suddenly has a flashback Augghhhh! he scurries awya from it.

Dolgrym stands and waits for the grenade to explode and charge the hole it creates.

Tegnar watches as the grenade falls to the base of the barricade. He shakes his head as he retreats from the impending explosion. "Ugh, I forgot about those grenades. So much for our plan. Lets move through the opening to try to reach them."

Seeing the grenade land near his position Yarask retreats, but not before shooting another arrow at the offending orc!

The three orcs move away from the catapult a few feet, one throws a grenade, which lands near the dwarves. The other two fire composite shortbows at Yarask, and one hits damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The orcs take advantage of the rocks to get cover as the fire. The catapult is unattended at the moment.

Seeing that the first grenade hasn't exploded yet, Dolgrym shouts out, "Two can play this game!" He picks up the grenade next to him and throws it just to the west of the middle orc.

Dolgrym notices the grenade seems to unerringly home on his aimpoint, guided by magic!

Flinching from the pain caused by the new wound Yarask shoots back at the orc he previously wounded!

Tegnar looks at Dolgrym with surprise and smiles as he sends the grenade back at the orcs. "Nice job, but be careful. It seems they go off at different times."

He tries to get a bead on one of the wounded orcs and fires his crossbow.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9


Augier moves down with his friends and holds, not able to get a good angle to fire.

We best hurry, that boy is still moving in on the other side.

The orc that was wounded sips from a small vial, and most of his wounds heal. The other orcs toss two grenades, a brand new one, and one that Dolgrym tossed after hiding carefully hiding the two to confuse them.

The two grenades land in front of the dwarves, and, the grenade by the barricade has not detonated yet!!

Dwarves up

The trio of deadly grenades continue to sputter, their fuses burning unevenly and difficult to estimate under the clay shells.

Looking disappointed that the grenade didn't go off, Tegnar moves further back from them. "Stop, grenades!" he yells hoping that Othdan hears him and stops his advance. "This is a game I prefer not to play. I hope they run out of those things soon." He then prepares to fire again if an orc shows himself from behind the rock.

Augier moves away from the grenades.

Again Karthak shoots an arrow and moves away from the grenades.

Dolgrym moves over behind the big rock and then starts to try and climb it.

He whispers to Augier "I may need a boost as he starts up."

Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

The missile fire cannot hit the orcs behind the cover of the rocks. Two grenades go off with a bang, the other grenade remains unexploded. The explosion leaves the leftmost part of the barricade destroyed and the ground shakes, but all the dwarves are out of the effective blast radius.

The orcs fire back with their arrows as it appears they are out of grenades.

One moves up behind the rocks, taking cover and getting a clear line of sight at the wizard.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 hitting him with an arrow for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The other target Tegnar to keep their cover, but Tegnar has cover and the arrows do not come close.

One grenade is ominously still hissing. Dolgrym begins his climb. He estimates, with no bad luck, he should be to the top in 20 seconds (3 rounds).

Tegnar moves up to get a clearer shot and tries to keep the orcs preoccupied. He fires at the closest orc but worried about the last grenade he rushes the shot and fires it into the barricade.

Yarask roars:"Wait for the grenade to explode, then we take them out the old fashioned way! meanwhile, let's soften them a little!"

Move and attack with bow. Don't forget racials, as I did before, also, Tegnar we could have waited behind the rocks one alone should not face three of them

The grenade continues to sputter.

The orcs fire at Tegnar.

One arrow hits Tegnar for [1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 as the orcs move near the catapult. Dolgrym's climb falls behind schedule. He is two rounds of successful climbing from the summit, one round from the ground besides the wizard.

Dolgrym sighs at his lack of progress and tries again to move up.

Did Yarask's last arrow hit?

Again Yarask draws his bowstring and let's another arrow fly towards the nearest orc!

Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19
Damage roll: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10


Yarask hits with his last arrow, the leader has taken some damage. Searching for a target, he cannot see any orcs from his vantage point after the orcs move back to the catapult. Dolgrym ascends, very close to the summit of the large rock formation.

The map should be updated. The rocks do block line of sight. From the top, Dogrym will have line of sight, being about forty feet above the catapult in height and twenty feet in ground distance.

Frustrated that the grenade hasn't gone off so he can move forward to attack the orcs, Tegnar crouches down with his crossbow ready should an orc decide to come over or around the barricade.

Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6


Dolgrym scrambles up the hill, and the dwarves wait. There is a huge explosion as the last grenade goes off.

The orcs seem content to wait, one drinks a healing potion.
Orc CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Dwarves up -- Orcs are still out of sight -- Dolgrym is one DC10 Climb from the top of the rocks

Once the last grenade expoldes Yarask runs up to the rock formation and hides behind it, getting ready to engage the enemy with the others.
