Sorry, I was waiting to see if Dantes wanted to try the climb and time got away from me.
As they near the top, they begin to hear the strains of a beautiful song being sung by a heavenly voice.
Both Chumtooth and Faengrim need to make Will saves (DC 16). If they fail, they continue the climb to the top and stand entranced by the music. If they succeed, read the spoiler.
Chumtooth |
Will Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
The music turns hideous in Chumtooth's ears. He looks up and sees six winged horrors on the summit.

Both attacks hit and do sneak attack damage, skewering one of the bird women through the midsection. The harpoon tears free and returns to Chumtooth's hand and the hideous harpy fights to stay aloft.
The remaining five birdwomen take to the air, striking at Chumtooth with morning stars. Fortunately, even under the fusillade of blows, his armor holds and the one blow that does get past it he easily dodges.
Dantes rises another 30 feet. He is now 60 feet from the top. Carmelia continues her climb and is now 90 feet from the top. Dantes, you can act if you have a spell that will reach the battle. Otherwise, Chumttoth is up!

Sorry Captain. I'm going to take a chance here that their fort save is no where near as good as yours...
Dantes hovers in place when he sees the harpies swarming his captain. Hoping to chase them away, Dantes utters the words of a spell at points. A noxious green cloud erupts from thin air, engulfing his captain and the harpies.

"No one died, and the bird-things are slain," Chumtooth replies, unconcerned. He takes a moment to take in the view of the entire island from the summit.

The nest contains little of interest, mostly remains of former victims and offal. Looking north, Chumtooth spots a pair of large animals grazing on the hill on the opposite side of the lake from them (area D on the map). These animals appear to be very large.
Beyond this hillside (area E) are a series of gargantuan steps, probably sized for giants, leading up the cliff. Further inland, he can make out the spires of a ruin (area G).
Chumtooth |
Chumtooth points towards the giant staircase. ”We should go there, and see where that path leads us.”
He looks to his officers to see if any of them has an objection or alternative plan in mind.
Faengrim |
"It does seem like an obvious direction, doesn't it?" However, Faengrim has no real objection and starts off, sword in hand.
WhtKnt |
It is late evening when you manage to circumvent the lake (or if you have a means to cross it, you could be there by early afternoon). A giant-sized corral sits on the eastern shore of a large lake. Several of the corral’s beams, each one the size of an entire tree, lie broken and smashed on the ground. Massive footprints from some heavy beast have long since dried in the muddy pasture.
Chumtooth |
"Some giant pigs or goats were penned here?" Chumtooth asks no one in particular, not expecting an answer.
He looks at the footprints and tries to more precisely identify what creatures have escaped their enclosure.

Profession, Tanner - what animal do the hoof prints resemble?: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24

The footprints are like none that Chumtooth has ever encountered. They are four-toed, with a claw topping each toe. The prints are about 35 inches across, from back to front.
Faengrim |
Faengrim also tries to determine what sort of animal these could be.
Knowledge: Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 He's concerned about those clawed toes.

Dantes recognizes the prints. They are indeed from a time when giants rules. These are the distinctive marks of a three-horned monstrosity with a great headplate that we would call triceratops.
Faengrim |
"How do they taste? Could we use them as a food source or hunt them for sport?" Faengrim looks forward to sinking his teeth into one.
WhtKnt |
