The Borderlands… an untamed wild region far flung from the comforts and protection of civilization. A lone fortified keep is the only bastion of good desperately striving to maintain the forces of chaos at bay. But evil is everywhere, lurking in dark caves, fetid swamps, and forlorn forests. Bands of cutthroat brigands and ruthless tribes of humanoids eager to clash with the forces of good rove the region. The Borderlands hold many secret wondrous locations, and the opportunities for fame, prestige, and fortune are plentiful. But equally abundant are the perils, risks, and challenges to those brave enough to explore the wilds.
Sharpen your swords and axes. Purchase your iron rations and tinderboxes... and don’t forget to bring at least one 10-foot pole. Adventure awaits those with the mettle to confront chaos in the Borderlands!

So I missed the map first time around (Might have chosen my first action more wisely), but am trying to grasp the current situation. Are the two orcs directly beside Hess the two just killed, or two fresh ones that will get an AoO on Hess if he either stands up or crawls away? If they're gone he'll stand and take the action Baern recommends. If not it might pay him to just play dead until he can do something without being attacked.
You could take the Disengage action, which means that no one can make AoO attacks on you. That would eat up your action for the turn though. You'd still have half your move (after standing) and a bonus action.
EDIT: I have to say that, if we survive this encounter, it'll lead to some excellent roleplaying afterwards.
@ MrSt4ng3 - Baern comes from a long and honorable line of dwarves, he will certainly have cousins and siblings. His parents disappeared though.
@Hess - If you take a Disengage action, it makes you exempt from all attacks of opportunity. You can stand up for half your movement. You only provoke in 5e if you move away from the enemy's threatened squares.
With Hoddy seeming to be playing a ranged ranger (I assume), then the front line could use some support. A barbarian or a fighter could give some much needed support alongside Baern and Shianni. A control-focused wizard can also make up for this with sleep and other such spells.
I say play whichever one of those you enjoy the best. Baern would happily welcome a cousin to the fray!
I am hoping we keep getting some good rolls and perhaps we'll be able to clear a way to Shianni. Either way, I'll keep my fingers crossed for good rolls on your death saves!
Alright, the orcs have withdrawn it seems but they took our dead and dying with them.
I'm assuming I saw that Teasag died and may have to make a roll to see if I could have noticed if Shianni was still alive or not? I can either cast Blessing and we can try to continue the fight to reclaim our dead or retreat away.
I don't just want to leave Shianni dying and dead and I know that Baern has stepped up to call for the retreat. I want to ask as a player what you guys think. If we retreat, we can take a short rest and go back in to reclaim our fallen or retreat to lick our wounds. However, Shianni may just die without our intervention.
I think, as a character, Garret would want to do all he can to keep the casualties to one. On the other hand, as a player, the orcs have a considerable tactical advantage over us and going in may cause more hurt than it solves. Any chance we could do a quick smash 'n' grab just to drag Shianni out (and stabilise her)?
Alright, I'm inclined to try and rescue the one that has not died yet. Sorry if this has slowed things down for people. I'm going to buff us and begin making some moves.
WhtKnt, if we could have the map again? We're still going to need it. :)
The map is up to date. I show Baern having moved to the barricade and everyone else still in the entranceway. You should each be able to move your character if I have everything done right.
It seems I had clicked on the wrong game. Again. So my apologies, your map was absolutely fine.
So here is hoping things go well! I'm sorry I didn't put the bless on you Hess, I wanted it just in case I get tapped by an Orc and have to make a Concentration Check. Hopefully, we can get Shianni out.
What kind of action would it be to grab Shianni's body and carry her out WhtKnt? I imagine only Hess or I would be able to do so, seeing as the others are small.
I read the background and it sounds excellent! As long as Baern does not die this day, he'll be able to make that Warhammer hit like a mack truck. It is either that or I'll use my Blessing of the Forge to give myself an AC of 19.
Sorry guys, I was away for the weekend and had considerably less of an internet connection than I'd planned on. I'm also quite busy at work for the rest of this week and next, so may be sporadic in my responses. Happy to be botted as necessary while that sorts itself out.
So I think we head back in with the party setup as follow...
Baern and Rurik up in the frontlines, side by side.
Garret and Hess being in the middle ranks, behind the dwarves.
Shianni and Hoddy in the back, watching our flanks.
Sound good to everyone?
Also, how are we doing XP GM WhtKnt? After a long rest? Whenever you decide to mercifully bestow it upon us? :P
Quick question, did you bot me in round 2? I am fine with that, I have an 11 day old baby so might need botting but you narated a miss but I didn't see the attack. Either way let's move forward. I can smell level 2
Yeah, he did. His post ended up getting eaten with the rolls originally so he just narrated what happened. You missed but so did all the orcs around us.
@Everyone - I just moved my character to be in position where I was wanting him. Sorry for the confusion and delay, I'm sure the party has jumped over onto the right side of the barricade by now.
If we have someone with any trap/lock ability, I'm done for just continuing as is. If we do not, we can look through out the earlier recruitment and contact someone who didn't get in?
