Speaking of, Sareth I need a Spell Penetration check versus SR. Just one will do.
Omrax runs his blade easily through one of the hovering fiends. Chunks of salt stone fly everywhere. 1d3 ⇒ 3

Omrax obliterates another gargoyle and Mrachni slices a third in half. Skybek scores two deep gashes in his personal foe.

Skybek: You took 1 point of Str damage from the initial failure (see spoiler above the status summary). You made the second save and the third save, which would have cured you if Omrax hadn't done so first. :)
Quinn delivers a nasty cut to the thing's face as the rest of the party moves to assist. Razorcraw drops his axe and flees deeper into the caverns!
GMTrex |
After the party has a chance to patch themselves up, they survey the odd winter-scape ahead.
Okay, so here is where Season 1 really tests your basic climb etc. skills in a rather annoying way. Each cliff and bluff is a DC 25 to successfully climb, up or down. Please assemble a plan to tackle this problem several times over and we'll go from there.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax shakes his head as the creature flees into the caverns.
"Cowardice runs deep in our foes this day."
The paladin surveys the jagged landscape with some disappointment.
Omrax has 50' of rope and a fly potion. He plans to save the potion for the exit from this place, so finding a way to climb up the bluffs in plate is his challenge. Jumping down with cat-boots is not as much of a worry
Quinn Kouniashi |
Quinn can jump down 10 feet without damage and 20 ft taking only 1d6 nonlethal damage. Every 10 feet after that is 1d6 lethal and prone. Can't fail the acro/dance for jumping down. As for going up, Quinn's rope is still hanging down the hole to get here.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Sareth |
"Omrax, after this I will invest in potions of flight as you do..."
We lower a rope and all clbim down reducing the DC considerably. Then Quinn unhooks the rope and follows.
Sareth |
"You'll be okay Quinn. Worst case is a slightly twisted ankle, which I promise to fix each time."
GMTrex |
What I really need is a plan to climb UP twenty or more feet several times against a DC 25. For the descent, you have rope and Omrax has boots of the cat, so that's not a problem.
Really you just need to get one decent climber among you to get up and lower a rope.
Mrachni Swordfollower |
As mentioned in OOC, I'm willing to take off my armor to get a +6... that and Quinn's heroism will be a +8, and if I can get four aids, I can take 10...
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will stop Mrachni from removing his armor.
"Nay Sir Mrachni, Our Lady needs you ready to fight should more of those creatures return. Allow me to speed us along."
Unless stopped, assume Omrax quaffs his potion and ferries people down to the last level in whatever order they choose. This will hopefully spare some dozen climb checks and falls.
Sareth |
no monkey fish et al. We can do it, just with resource we wanted to save.
"Sir Omrax, save the potion for when we need to go up. I also have the ability to turn into a cloud, and I believe Skybek can slide through space. "

Skybek Odeon |
"Aye, it's true. Ahh can get tae most ana place that Ahh can see. The trouble comes if yae're stuck inside the belly o' a plant beastie and cannae see yer way oot."
How far would I need to dimensional hop to the top? Never mind. I found it.
"Lemmae show yae."
Skybek uses his dimensional hop to vanish and reappear twenty feet up the ledge.
He pulls out his silk rope and looks for a place to attach it.
"Get ready tae climb."
Sareth |
So that's the plan then GM Trex.
This is such a classic D&D scene. The high level characters unwilling to use valuable resources because the problem is mundane. Seriously, this would be in Dragon's Mirth (+1 if you're old enough to know what that is "-)
Quinn Kouniashi |
Quinn calls up to the ledge. "How wide is the ledge? Can the rope hang off both sides? I mean, tack it in the middle or something?"
Sorry, totally miss the reference. Didn't start gaming till 4th ed.
Sareth |
For more than 20 years, and largely before the internet there was a Publication called Dragon Magazine. It was all things gaming. Articles upon articles. Eventually the magazine publisher switched to a small company who kept it going before deciding that it could do more, that company was Paizo :-) Anyone one of the sections in the magazine was called Dragon's Mirth. It was a bunch of gaming cartoons that poked fun at everything in D&D.
Sareth |
Worth it. Definitely, if for nothing other than a feel for the history of the game.
GMTrex |
Travel Domain for the win.
With a routine put in place, the company makes their slow way through bizarrely shaped cavern. About halfway through, Quinn spots a substantial cache of treasure assembled on one of the higher ridges.
Will cost Skybek 30 feet of dimensional hop to obtain. Includes 2502 gp worth of coins and rough-cut gems and a severed orc hand with an iron ring of Rovagug still attached to a finder. Both the hand and ring detect as magical.
The tunnel ends at a sudden drop off. A wide shaft opens up in the earth and descends into darkness below--darkness that again extends far beyond the range of anyone's vision. Opposite the entry tunnel are other irregular ledges. The walls of the shaft and ledges are of the same white crystalline substance as elsewhere.
Skipping the optional encounter here. Anyone really interested in a CR 8 encounter involving some CR 2 bat swarms and CR 2 cave fishers?
The shaft descends twenty feet before opening to a larger cavern below. The team estimates it is about 150 feet to the sparkling ground at the bottom. Next mundane obstacle! :)
Omrax the Bold |
"We were good until this last drop." Omrax says with a straight face.
He pulls out his rope and starts uncoiling it.
"So this gets us 50+50 with Skybek's rope...less if knotted. I estimate it is much further than that to the bottom. I may need to use my potion after all."
