Would not that be a 18+11 from your normal escape artist skill? I am trying to get you loose one way or another. ;-)

Omrax is correct, it would be (4) + 11 + 14, as the +14 is a competence bonus. Sadly, the CMD is greater than 29. An unlucky round for Quinn!

Omrax comes swiftly to the aid of his allies, throwing some good will toward Quinn, unfortunately to no avail, and hacking deep into the plant-matter closing in around Skybek. His blade cuts easily through the vines, but they're thick buggers.

Round I -- bold may act! (Don't forget the Fort save to start!)
1. Quinn (49/73 hp, grappled, blind)
2. Plants (Red @ 4 dmg, grappled; Green @ 41 dmg, grappled)
3. Sareth, Mrachni, Skybek (75/86 hp, grappled), Omrax

Actually, I lied! Since it has the Dex penalty from the grappled condition, Quinn breaks free! Unless I don't know my grapple rules well enough and someone wants to correct me.

To the GM's everyone's surprise, Quinn wriggles his way free!

Round 1

Defensively, Skybek casts Bull's Strength on himself.

Concentration vs. DC 19: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 (Casting defensively is DC 15+ double spell level)
Concentration vs. DC 14+Grappler's CMB: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26 (Casting while grappled or pin is DC 10 + Grappler's CMB + Spell Level)

Sareth will have cast Daylight to light the way with his shield.

*enters malevolent and capricious GM mode* Because I am malevolent and capricious, I will have to say lesson learned and use it next round. You may need it. (See below.) *exits malevolent and capricious GM mode*

*enters benevolent and judicious GM mode* Because I am kind and judicious, I note that the statistics for these creatures are very slightly different in the Bestiary than they are in the adventure appendix, likely because of an update. I will run the slightly weaker adventure creature and retcon accordingly: Quinn did not take a tentacle to the face. *exits benevolent and judicious GM mode*

@ Sareth: I believe you cast protection from energy before we came down here, not protection from evil. I should have asked you for an energy type at that time, but will do so now. Type?

1d4 ⇒ 3 Quinn is blind for 3 rounds, including the last one

Mrachni and Sareth count their blessings and ask for more; Quinn flails madly with his scimitar and Skybek struggles in his plant's jaws. The plant straightens abruptly, flinging the dwarf into the air. His horrified colleagues watch as his flailing limbs are swallowed whole into the plant at the apex of his flight, and cringe as the bulge slides down the length of the trunk. Coming to a rest near the cavern floor, the bulge grows rapidly and separates from the main trunk: a cocoon. Inside the fibrous mass, Skybek--still alive--experiences terrible burns and horrific pulses from the sac's acid-filled innards.

    Combat Maneuver @ Skybek: 1d20 + 20 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 20 - 2 - 1 = 21 SUCCESS
    Bludgeoning Damage: 2d8 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (6, 3) + 8 - 1 = 16
    Acid Damage: 8 - 1 = 7

    Skybek:
If you have a light slashing or piercing weapon handy, you can try to cut your way free. You do have to cut the right spots though, so the AC is 15. I also need a Fort save versus the blindness effect from last round. If you fail (DC 20), assume that the miss chance is negated because you're, well, surrounded by the sac.

Its jaws now free, the plant that ate Skybek swivels for a new target... in the meantime, its fellow hacks fruitlessly at the well-armored Omrax.

    Bite @ Omrax: 1d20 + 16 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 16 - 1 = 26
    Tentacle @ Omrax: 1d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 11 - 1 = 12
    Tentacle @ Omrax: 1d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 11 - 1 = 26

Finally, the plant which Quinn escaped pulsing with blinding light, seeking to further incapacitate its prey. I need a new Fort save from everyone except Quinn (who is already blind) and Skybek (who got eated). DC 20.

Haha, okay. Protection from Evil it is then. I'll factor it in (if the plants are evil).

Sarenrae's power of healing is of aid even to Skybek, as fortunately he is now nigh-indistinguishable from the cocoon. Weird corner case. Not 100 percent sure a burst would affect him but that's how I'm going to rule.

I am counting +2 for the Bull's Strength and the -2 Attack Penalty for grappled. I'm also including -2 Attack/+4 Damage for Power Attack.

    Round II

Indeed, Skybek begins cutting himself out of the plant using Power Attack.

    Crimzor: 1d20 + 11 + 2 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 2 - 2 - 2 = 27

    Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 + 4 = 13

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking | Liberation Points: 4

A few things: Crimzor is not a light weapon, and you specifically need a light weapon to break free from swallow whole effects (which is why I always always always advise everyone to carry at least a dagger). I don't see any light slashing or piercing weapons in your statblock, so I think you may have to focus on keeping yourself alive until you can get cut out. Secondly, though a moot point, you don't have bull's strength (see last post) but also aren't technically grappled and you do have prayer active.

So take two rounds of actions, Skybek. Sorry :(

The plants are eager to feed...

    Tentacle @ Sareth: 1d20 + 11 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 11 - 1 - 2 = 20 MISS

Quinn desperately trains his ears for the plant's gnashing jaws and manages to swerve out of the way. A vine slaps him in the gut and another goes over his head. Omrax ignores the plant's meager attempts to hit him, taking it all on the armor. Sareth is not so lucky. A carnivorous mouth closes hard around him just before another vine cracks into his knee.

Meanwhile, agony screams over Skybek inside his cocoon.

    Bludgeoning: 2d8 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (7, 7) + 8 - 1 = 21

No worries! :) You are not grappled but you are receiving 'continuous' damage, so the concentration DC for a spell would be 24 + spell level. You do not need a Concentration to channel.

@ Sareth: thanks for the reminder about FoM. No grapple for you!

@ Quinn: you're still blind this round. In light of this, if you'd like to switch to Total Defense, no problem. If not, 3d100 ⇒ (7, 61, 18) = 86 one attack still lands though!

@ Sareth: that'd be a Knowledge (nature) check, but Skybek still sounds like Skybek and hasn't said "Master" yet.

Quinn hopes that the dark mass before him is a plant and waves his weapon wildly. Likewise, he hopes the slicing sound was plant-matter. Skybek keeps his cool and sets about addressing his wounds.

Ha! I had the same thought a few rounds ago (plants, as a general rule, don't like fire), but Sareth sadly did not prepare fireball today.
