As it turns out, Wren was predictably insufferable about all this.
Wren smiles smugly to herself as her powerful magics undid the dragon so thoroughly, trying to hide her smug smile smugly behind her smug hand...it did not succeed in hiding her smug. Her cracked yellow teeth didn't even ruin the effect.
"And that, my dearies, and I hope you were taking notes...*that* is how you disintegrate your foes," Wren points out to her little chickadees as she flies slow circles over their heads.
She pauses for a moment and preens her feathered armor before looking down upon the party.
"Well, shall we move on? Which way next? To the Spire, is it?"
Wren will follow along.
Bronin Dohari |
Bronin smiles a bit internally as Wren's reaction and obvious look into her soul reveals something reliable and predictable.
It's nice to know that the world is not total madness and that some things can be relied upon. Like Wren preening her feathers.
then he thinks a bit about what he was thinking and mumbles to himself.
What a juxtaposition, I'm thinking that something the "mad as a cracked scimitar" Wren said was normal and comforting. Sometimes I wonder if this world deserves saving.
Then he answers his own question and talks to himself.
Of course this world deserves saving. Let's get to the Spire. I'll take point.
He moves forward to the main spire. He mentally calls for his horse, patience if he finds that the Spire has enough room for a horse to occupy.

The threat of the dragon apparently eliminated you resume your progress back toward the center of the ruined city and your ultimate showdown with Adivion Adrissant.
An ornate tower of crumbling gray stone spears through the heart of Adorak, its walls festooned with hanging chains and cruel, barbed hooks impaling countless preserved corpses. A haze of gray dust perpetually falls from the towering obelisk, almost as if the stone itself was rotting. A stairway of entwined skeletons spirals around the perimeter of the tower, and swirling phantoms howl and scream in a furious storm of unquiet dead around the spire’s dizzying heights. The only entrance into the windowless tower appears to be a pair of massive doors at the fortress’s base. Constructed of dark basalt and iron, the tower reaches over 400 feet high. You suspect any attempt to fly up would meet some horrific end in the howls of the unquiet undead -- not to mention the ongoing storm that has been keeping you mostly at ground level.
Ahead of you, gigantic skeletal arms clasp immense doors of dark metal, but whether they are holding the doors closed or stand poised to open them is unclear. Two clearly undead forms shrouded in tattered knightly armor stand guard.
They're devourers, but look like they're more powerful than the standards ones (which are already pretty awful).

With just one foe remaining, the group concentrates all its aggression on it, blasting it with fire and steel. It swipes furiously as Bronin gets close, but he ducks under its hand. A moment later, it is turned into so much ash by Lena's spell. All that remains are a pair of broken -- once masterwork -- breastplates.
The gates stand closed against you.

Wren the FeatherMage |
"Well, dearies, that was nice. Are we ready to continue? Those gates aren't going to open themselves," Wren says, floating in the back of the party and trying to keep her little ducklings safe.
Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
"Well, they migh' if'n ye be havin' th' righ' spells. Course we all know how unlikely tha'd be!"
Whiskeyjack looked at the door to see if there was any way of opening it from this side before attempting to use his dwarven skeleton key.

Damn, two natural 20s! I suppose I need to give you something for that...
The doors look massive, and Whiskey quickly realizes they, and the skeletal arms, are both crafted out of adamantine and sealed with an arcane lock. Based on their appearance, even if both were unlocked, the massive portals weigh over 200 tons each, requiring the Strength of a Titan to drag open. Fortunately, it looks like the giant arms are animated and would pull the doors open with the right prompt. Considering the area and its inhabitants, it might require negative energy.
