Our Mysterious Benefactor |

The dream tome that was stolen and that you recovered is the only book you've really come across, so most likely.

![]() |

"We have come to recover something in this strange realm," Ferabras replies directly. "The mind of someone who helped us was stolen by a hag. We believe it is somewhere in this realm of dreams, and we are here to recover it and restore her to her wits."
With a yellow-eyed glance at his companions, he continues, "We may have a book, but I know not if it is yours. Who are you?"

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

"I am the master of this place. If you seek the woman Carrington, we may have a parley. If you give me the key and the book, I would return the woman's soul. But beware, dark forces array here and any attempt at backstabbery will result in your doom!" The sneering figure leers down at you from the painting.

![]() |

Kharnia arches an eyebrow. Her opinions of talking portraits was already middling, but this one's attitude does not endear it to her.
Can I identify what the heck this is?

![]() |

"Dark forces? Do you mean the hag that stole her soul?" Garret asks.
Don't show it you are scared, don't show it you are scared….
Bluff: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Zora's deathwatch doesn't seem to register the portrait. Arcana check for Karnhia!
"Of course, slip. Who do you think Sally works for?" He smiles with a satisfied smirk.

![]() |

lol!
"I am not a slave! This might be your realm, but don't you speak to me like that!"

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

The man looks haughty. "Very well, halfling. Now, give me my key and book and all this unfortunateness shall be over."

![]() |

Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (9) + 17 = 26
"Why did you take Doana Carrington into your realm, portrait?" asks Kharnia, puzzling over what their interlocutor is.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Karnhia, this seems to be a use of the enter image spell!
"Simple. I require my stolen merchandise to be returned. And it amuses my hag to toy with the soul of your medium." He seems amused by this.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

"Pharasma can wait her turn. The key and book WILL be returned. I am the only person who can control their power effectively. Why do you think dreams have bled into Korvosa? Fail to return them and Carrington's soul will be devoured. But make no mistake, you WILL return them. Or Korvosa will continue to fall into dreams and the nightmares will feed."

![]() |

"Giorgo" finally comments Kharnia, a sly smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Maybe we'll return them. Maybe we won't. But in the meantime, you will learn to speak like a man. And if that is beyond you, then we will shut you up like a dog. In a manner similar to this."
And without another word, Riddywhipple flies across the portrait, slashing at the canvas.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

The canvas tears, but one last fading sentence rings. "Sally Scrabblebones will sup on your friend's soul." As he fades, a sound like an orchestra warming up begins as if from far away.
Will saves from everyone vs an enchantment (mind-affecting) effect!

![]() |

Unsure whether there was any better way to proceed, Fera braces himself for whatever happens when a small dragon attacks a talking picture.
Will : 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 Rats. That could be bad.
FYI, I’m just starting a long work trip, which will last until just before Xmas, so my posting will be limited.

![]() |

Kharnia Will: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
And this is how the party died...

![]() |

Riddywhipple Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Please, more average rolls Dicebot. I live to die ignominiously.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Mikail and Garret feel perfectly normal, but Ferabras, Riddywhipple, Karnhia and Zora all get strange looks of anger on their faces.
Round 1 Ferabras, even is violence, odd is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Round 1 Karnhia, even is violence, odd is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Round 1 Riddywhipple, even is violence, odd is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Round 1 Zora, even is violence, odd is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Zora and Ferabras feel an irrestible urge to attack and maim the closest person to them! Karnhia feels as if the ghostly music is some distant echo of madness! AKA a haunt!
Ferabras: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Mikail: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Zora: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Garret: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Karnhia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Round 1:
Garret
Zora
Ferabras
Mikail and Karnhia
Garret is up first!

![]() |

"Are you allright?" Garret asks the others
delay, to come out of delay once Zora has acted (assuming she attempts to harm one of us)

![]() |

How embarrassing, esp as Zora is GREAT at dealing with haunts... when she notices them. It's a long shot, but would Zora's 'deathless spirit' apply here on her save? "+2 saves vs. death, necromancy, and negative energy effects." If so, I'll retcon this coming action, but assuming I am still affected by the haunt:
Zora's pale eyes narrow in a sudden anger that is quite foreign to the normally distant and detached Pharasmin. Unslinging the spear from her back she lashes out at...
(Looks like I'm equally close to Kharnia and Garret. 1 for Kharnia, 2 for Garret. 1d2 ⇒ 2)
...the halfling, proving his question of concern to be founded!
Swing: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

![]() |

"Zora! Stop it! I do this to prevent you from harming any of us."
Garret kicks at the knees of the aasimar
Trip Zora: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
He then takes another good look around and notices the look of anger on the face of Ferabras, Karnhia and Riddywhiple. Deciding that it is probably best to make sure the tiefling is unable to attack Garret decides to attempt to bring him down too. However the halfling slips and finds himself on the ground....
Trip Ferabras: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
Trip Ferabras: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
failed CMB by 11...

![]() |

Ferabras, it is all part of the game
GM, I would like to also expend a ki point to increase AC by 4, which will offset the prone modifier ;-) If Ferabras is not affected I will not expend that ki point and those second and third trip attempts won't have been made.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

This is a enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting, sonic] effect! And Zora, even with the +2 you still failed the DC! Doh!
Zora takes a swing at Garret and the startled halfling trips the cleric with a deft move! He tries to trip Ferabras, but the bigger tiefling is set like a stone in his stance!
Ferabras, Mikail and Karnhia can act!

![]() |

Kharnia swears profusely before giving Ferabras the Evil Eye.
Targeting saves, DC 19. 5 ft step away. Unless you think I shoudl go for some Slumber action Ferabras. The problem is that your Will save is high.

![]() |

Will save vs Evil Eye: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Target, Odd=Mika, Even=Garret: 1d20 ⇒ 12
DM - I assume I need to full attack to satisfy the compulsion to do violence. If somehow I don't, I'll just do the first attack.
Ferabras doesn't even notice Karnhia's hex, so intent is he on doing harm to the little halfling who keeps trying to trip him! Slashing at Garret as he lies on the ground, then slashing again, the tiefling follows up with a bite!
+2 Greatsword: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Greatsword damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (3, 1) + 11 = 15
+2 Greatsword, iterative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Greatsword damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (2, 2) + 11 = 15
Bite attack, secondary: 1d20 + 14 - 5 ⇒ (2) + 14 - 5 = 11
Bite damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Well, that could have been worse - very lucky Garret has such a high AC.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Round 2:
Garret
Zora
Ferabras
Mikail and Karnhia
The swings and violence continues!
Round 2 Ferabras, 1 is violence, 2 is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Round 2 Karnhia, 1 is violence, 2 is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Round 2 Riddywhipple, 1 is violence, 2 is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Round 2 Zora, 1 is violence, 2 is peace: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Zora and Ferabras continue to attack, but Karnhia feels no such compulsion!
Everyone can go!

![]() |

Kharnia shouts: "We need to get out of here!"
Can I determine what is going on and how to stop it from happening?
With a twist of her arm, she begins to chant, stepping out the door as she does so. And Ferabras feels the urge to go to sleep.
Ferabras, you are at a -2 to saves from the Evil Eye (it'll end at the end of my turn due to your successful save, and I have no reason to extend it through cackle). Make a DC 19 Will save or go to sleep. Please fail.

![]() |

Where is the song emanating from? Any particular location that could be... I don't know... Silenced?

![]() |

"The song! IT'S BECAUSE OF THE SONG! GIVE ME A MOMENT, AND I'LL SILENCE IT!"

![]() |

Mikail hurries to flank Ferabres with Garrett. "This isn't good... Fera, buddy, snap out of it!"
Aiding Garret's AC, dc 10: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
+2 to Garret's AC vs the next attack Ferabras makes against him, and will give Garret the flank bonus if Garret keeps attacking Ferabras

![]() |

Garret focuses on his defense and then tries to stand up
which provokes, AC 31 for AoO, after that it is 35
He tries to be ready for another attack by Fera.
Readied trip: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24 come on!
Ready to trip if Fera attacks, although it will fail

![]() |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Will save vs DC 19, Evil Eye : 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 12 - 2 = 30
Will save vs DC 19, Evil Eye : 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 - 2 = 18 Using Folio Reroll
Seeing Garret move as if he’s going to stand, Ferabras raises his blade to strike his halfling friend at a vulnerable moment - but before he can strike, the red-skinned warrior feels his eyelids lowering, his grip weakening, and he crashes to the floor, sound asleep!
Funny to use a reroll to fail a save, but I’ll take it! Karnhia’s hex should have gone off before Garret stood, so I didn’t take the AoO.

![]() |

The one time it's advantageous not to have GM stars :D

![]() |

Whew!
Zora struggles to her feet still in the grips of inhuman rage... Provokes to stand
Another swing at Garret, in retaliation for his strike at her!
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
For Zora it's a surprisingly skilled attack. Still misses.
One of the times I'm glad Zora has no real offensive spells

![]() |

GM, do you mind if I retcon the spending of a ki point if Fera is asleep before I stand up? I am not afraid of Zora's fists ;-)

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

No problem, Garret.
Ferabras succumbs to sleep, while Zora fights with a rage you've never seen from the cleric!

![]() |

Mikail hurries over to get into an advantageous position on their possessed cleric friend...
Mikail tumbles: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18 Which is enough!
Zora seems not very skilled with her spear, judging by how nimbly Mikail gets behind her. "Sorry, Zora!"
He tries to bring the pommel of his rapier down on the Pharismin's skull. "I should really buy a sap..."
Rapier, non lethal, flank: 1d20 + 11 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 11 - 4 + 2 = 18
Damage, NL: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Round 3:
Garret
Zora
Ferabras
Mikail and Karnhia
Karnhia violence check, 1 is peace, 2 is violent: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Riddywhipple violence check, 1 is peace, 2 is violent: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Zora violence check, 1 is peace, 2 is violent: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Zora seems to come back to herself, but Karnhia and Riddywhipple resume lashing out!
