"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" - The Happy Mask Salesman, Majora's Mask

Welcome to my recruitment thread, gamers all. Please, enter freely and of your own accord. I have taken it upon myself to run the Carrion Crown adventure path, a long-time favorite of mine, through its entirety and perhaps beyond.

So, by viewing this thread you are hoping to submit a character to play through the adventure, so I'll get right to the crunch so the fluff may develop after.

For your listening terror...

CRUNCH 'n' FLUFF
-For stats, I'm using a formula known as the Focus and Foil. In a nutshell, you have an 8 and an 18 to place as you wish before racial bonuses are applied. The other four are determined by rolling 1d10+7 four times, and these may be placed as you wish.

-Average gold and max hp for your class.

-Paizo material ONLY! No third party material will be permitted.

-All classes are available, including the unchained versions of them. I'm a bit hesitant on gunslingers and summoners, but I'm letting them through my net.

-Core races are fine, along with aasimars, changelings, dhampirs, orcs, skinwalkers, and tieflings. Other races will have a harder time getting in, but if you present an awesome story, I might let it slide. No feat tax for alternate racial goodness for tieflings and others, if you were wondering.

-Alignments are as follows: Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Lawful Evil (only if team player and a good story behind it), Neutral Good, True Neutral, Chaotic Good, and Chaotic Neutral (only if minimal disruption). No Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil for hopefully obvious reasons. Now, this is only for initial character creation/submission. I love a good story as much as the next dungeon master, and if your story is one that warrents a fall into darkness, so be it. Don't plan on going evil early unless you really want a screwy character. In that case, PM me first and we'll work something out off the books.

-Two traits - one of which must be a campaign trait - and one drawback for a third. Drawbacks will be monitored and used/abused and must tie into the character's background; same goes for traits.

-As for backgrounds, I'd like it to go as follows:

1) I'd like 5+ points that capture the concept and story of the character. More are welcome, but no less than five.
2) Two goals that you'd like the character to accomplish in-game.
3) Two secrets, one the PC keeps to himself, and one kept from the PC. I'll come up with a third that both the character and player aren't aware of, in hopes of shocking surprises within the storytelling.
4) 3-5 people that are tied to your PC by blood, love, rivalry, honor, etc. I'd like at least one enemy in a set of three or four, with no more than two for a set of five.
5) Three key memories that define your character as the person they are at the time of submission. Including Lorrimor in one of those might not be a bad idea.

All that is to help you and me tell a compelling story not only you, but any who read our adventure, will enjoy. If this is asking too much, let me know.

-Finally, I'd like you to include with your submission a fear or paranoia that causes your character to shiver, cower, or panic. Anything from spiders to unexplained happenstance, but I'm sure you'll all come up with some awful stuff on your own. Cool?

Questions are welcome and wanted; if I missed something, tell me. I look forward to meeting your characters in Ustalav.

Edit: Ad will close Jan 31. Thnx for pointing that out.

Dot for interest. I like your take on F&F that allows moving the stats.

What's your timeline?

Would you allowing me to use the pre-errata version of the elf/aasimar racial bonus for oracle? I'm considering making a character with somewhat of a focus on channeling and that would make it much more interesting (going for life oracle in that case). Though I'm also considering an undead bloodline sorcerer or even a psychic which has a similar phrenic amplification to the undead bloodline arcana.

I'd be stoked to put something together, but I'm not quite sure what yet. Dotting in for inspiration to strike.

@ oyzar: Sure? Not sure what that exact difference is, but if you can show it to me, then sure.

It had been 1/2 of a mystery level and I think it's now 1/6. Quite a brutal nerf.

Aha, that was brutal, but yes, I'll allow that.

Carrion Crown is Gothic horror right?

My luck with F&F has been horrible, but made for great role playing characters, so let's see::

Random: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Random: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Random: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Random: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Whoa! Those don't suck.

I'll go with a life oracle with the spirit guide archtype then. Will you allow spirit guide pre-errata as well? It used to use charisma for everything for hexes.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Yes

You staying Oracle, or thinking Oradin?

I'd be interested in either a Skinwalker of some sort or a Dhampir Inquisitor Vampire Hunter of Pharasma.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

How'd I roll 3 4's in a row? Lol

Zahir ibn Mahmoud ibn Jothan wrote:

Definitely just oracle, the saves from paladin are nice, but that's also all it gives for this character.

@GM: Sorry about all these questions... Thinking about it further, it would be nice if I could combine dual cursed with spirit guide. That's normally not allowed since they both modift mystery class skills. Spirit guide changes them while dual cursed makes it so you gain none, can I pick both archtypes and not get any?

Oh, to help inform character creation, I'll go ahead and get my stats rolled up:

Stat the first: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Stat the second: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Stat the third: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Stat the fourth: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Hmm...two eights is going to hurt, but I can make it work. I'm leaning toward a summoner a bit, as I've never gotten to play one; I know you'll allow either version, but do you have a preference on APG v. Unchained? I'm perfectly fine with whichever you prefer.

I hear unchained is better, so I'd run with that if it were me.

Unchained is a significant nerf to the summoner, which might be why many GMs prefer it.

Sir, you have my complete interest. Let's see what happens.

Rollan' 1: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Rollan' 2: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Rollan' 3: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Rollan' 4: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Not the best rolls ever, but they are nice: 18, 14, 11, 10, 9, 8.

I'll see what can I do!

Unchained it is, then! I'll start working on ideas, and I'll let you know what I come up with!

Thinking of making an human paladin warrior of holy ligth(with some oath campain wise).

One: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Two: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Three: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Four: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Hurray for the rolls, gonna be the feeblest paladin ever.

One: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Two: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Three: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Four: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Woah, Carrion Crown! I've been putting off the urge to read it in case a game came along. I've know idea what I'll make so I'll let the dice help:

one: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
two: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
three: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
four: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

I can make that work.

All right, I think I have the beginnings of an idea - an Ustalavic noblewoman, Emily Dunn, who showed herself a prodigy in the field of constructs and graduated top of her class in the study of arcana at the University of Lepidstadt. The pinnacle of her work was the clockwork construct she built as her thesis; in fact, the golem was built so well that it was chosen by the axiomites to be awakened as an inevitable, tasked with combating the chaos inherent to Ustalav.

Having recently begun her masters' work on the subject of constructs, Emily's very tentatively agreed to humor Korrishan in his mission - after all, it'll make for some interesting field work. She's delaying the start of their grand exploration a bit, though, so she can attend the funeral of Petros Lorrimor, her mentor throughout her studies so far and one of her greatest inspirations. After all, he's encouraged her so much in her work; it'd be an insult to his memory to miss laying him to rest.

In terms of mechanics, she'll be an unchained summoner with an inevitable eidolon. Emily will focus mostly on party support, including social skills, and Korrishan will be built as a melee beatstick. (I really wish there was some way to get summoners based off of Intelligence rather than Charisma - it'd fit the concept better, but it is what it is.)

A few questions, though:

1) Are you ok with the trait Rich Parents? It's really as much for character flavor as anything, and I'll be pumping it into stuff to help the party out. If you don't like it, that's just fine.

2) I'd really like to take the Trap Finder trait from Mummy's Mask, as it'd be very in-character and let me cover the rogue-ish role. But that'd make for two campaign traits once I choose one from Carrion Crown; two traits of the same category is usually a no-go, and often GMs frown on taking campaign traits from another campaign. Is there any chance of flexibility on that, or should I take another Disable Device trait and forgo the ability to disable magical traps?

3) Are you open to using Background Skills from Pathfinder Unchained?

EDIT: Disregard the Rich Parents question - I'm picking up a trait for Diplomacy as a class skill instead.

So, ummm, seems like lots of divines and spell casters being planned.

I believe I will go with a gnome cavalier.

GM question: a Druid can take a dire bat at first level. Would you permit me to take one as a Cavalier? I find riding a giant bat to be very thematic. If your initial answer is "no" then how about if I take the Beast Rider archetype?

@ Rennaivx: A few answers...

1) Yes I am. Go for it.
2) OK, replace your CC trait for the MM trait, reflavor it for Ustalav (not that hard to do, looking at it), and I'll call it good.
3) Yes, forgot that for odd reasons, but I'll be allowing that as well.

@ Zahir: Oh yeah! Absolutely.

Dark Archive

This is GM Gathrix's submission

5+ points(Drawback and Traits explained):

1)Nimon was a hardened Inquisitor of Pharasma hunting down undead and those that harbored them or made use of necromancy. Nimon was struck with a negative energy from a battle with a lich. A Pharasma Cleric known as Leona tried to cure it, but instead left Nimon with an odd ability to heal those he touched, as if taking on the wounds himself.(Sacred Touch trait)
2)The professor was his saving grace and removed most of the negative effects, though some residual of the magic still remained and left him stronger(Deathtouched Trait)
3)Nimon chose to turn a blind eye to the Professor's experiments though they would be considered heretical. He believed they could be used to fight the enemy. Others in his organization disagreed, specifically an upstart inquisitor known as Nizila Tellamora. Nizila is an elven inquisitor who's hatred of undead bordered on the insane. She called Nimon out and branded him a (Heretic Archetype)
4)Nimon having no where else to turn, sought employment with the Professor, who was eager to put him to work as a private investigator of sorts. (On the Payroll Trait)
5)Nimon is not a typical Inquisitor in his demeanor, he prefers the soft approach. This is mostly due to his work with undead as they are often less personable and reveal themselves when confronted with emotions.(Explaining my Lack of Intimidate, more of a bluffer/conversationalist-Thinking BladeRunner for Undead)
6)Working for the Professor would make anyone paranoid, being in Ustalav doubly so.(Paranoid Drawback)

Two goals:

1)Nimon wants to clear his name with the Inquistion of Pharasma
2)Nimon was never able to defeat the lich that wounded him so long ago, he still hunts it and would like to eventually vanquish his old foe

Two secrets:

1)Nimon had been playing double agent to a degree with the Professor and the Inquisition as a way to gain back favor. His death has him worried he might have been to blame in some way for his demise.
2)Nimon does not know that Leona is the one that sold him out, not Nizila

3-5 people:

1)Nizila Elven Inquistor of Pharasma, believed enemy
2)Leona Human Cleric of Pharasma, believed friend
3)Seric a Dhampir Kinslayer, contact in Ustalav
4)Yona a Half-Elf female Monk, love interest before she joined her monastery has not seen her in years
5)Renvor Hizil, one of the many names the Lich adversary goes by

3 Memories:

1)Remembers arguing with the Professor about payment for tracking down a rare undead fey. Had not spoken with Lorrimor since then.
2)Remembers watching a blue and white comet shot across the sky. It was this epiphany that brought him to the Church of Pharasma.
3)Remembers Yona's long hair and pale skin, promising to return from her temple in Cheliax after her training.

Phobia:
Renvor's eyes are small beads of light that float in his skull, and everytime Nimon sees a will-o'-the-wisp he is reminded of him and that wound that changed his life.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Wow, talk about feast or famine. How many players are you taking and what kind of posting rate are you looking for?

@ Elek: An excellent question...

ANNOUNCEMENT:
I'll be taking 5-6 players and I'd like at least one post on week days, and then whatever we can manage weekends.

@ Nimon: I'd like an official alias before too long.

Always wanted to try Carrion Crown. Let's see...

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

makes for 8, 10, 12, 12, 16, 18 before race...

Not bad. I'm thinking of trying out the Psychic. Will post back with stats and stuff once I put it together

Rennaivx here with my in-progress unchained summoner Emily and her new companion Korrishan. Fluff just lacks a quick stroll down memory lane, I believe, and crunch just lacks going shopping. Everything's in my alias profile; enjoy! (I do like this character introduction method, by the way - it really helps to flesh things out.)

Lets be frank 18, 16, 15, 8, 8, 8, is a 28 point buy, but everyone would be "He's just Min/Maxing!" But there is an archetype in gothic horror that fits the strong dumb type. GM how offended would you be with a traditional "Igor" type character? He could have been an employee of the good professor, or a janitor who was cleaning a lab that saved his life? Or an employee of another character. Does anyone need an assistant? I believe I can flesh him out as a viable interesting character, any opinions on the idea?

Zahir here. Have draft stats for Posh and his mount in the profile. Will work on getting the backgroundy questions done.

I'm dotting for interested with this character, Ulam Bone-cracker, an Orc Ranger. He was created for another Carrion Crown campaign which folded in it's very early stages. I'm very fond of him, and have been hoping for a replacement campaign ever since.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Of course I will have to adjust his stats and complete your requirements for backstory. I like the though you've put into your questions. Thanks for running this awesome campaign. I'll be back soon.

Dotting for interest. I'm going to brainstorm some character ideas and come back.

I'm planning a NG Human (Varisian) Warpriest (archer build) of the Desnan variety. Working on alias.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

I'm still working out the full details on the Psychic I'm making, but I've been leaning towards the psychadelia discipline. If you wanted to to go the assistant route, my guy could be the type that gets so strung out on a regular basis that he'd need to have someone on retainer to make sure he doesn't get stuck in a situation where he can't function.

That is a possible option, I would like to hear what GM Nightmare Knight thinks before I pursue it too far, thinking a orc if I want him really big and dumb or half orc if I want him moderately big and dumb

If "Igor" for a lack of better names for now was an employee of the professors how could he have become you employee? Or if "igor" rescued the professor, say at a university, how could we tie your player in? Just in case, don't tie your character down to closely, that way if I don't make it in you may still be able too! ;)

I'm thinking Slayer, because what's a gothic monster mashup without a Slayer these days?

As I'm narrowing it down in my own head, I'm going with the former student angle for my own character. Broad-strokes (I'll post the details with the full crunch tomorrow and/or after we decide this): Lower-number kid from a moderately wealthy family in Ustalav, bright but a penchant for hedonism. Got inspired by a discourse on the nature of the esoteric planes, particularly the positive and negative energy planes and how they relate to both life and death and the mind. He's been researching this connection by dosing himself regularly with psychoactive drugs to plumb the depths of his own consciousness (developing psychic power along the way).

For my own part, I think this works with or without having an assistant, but I think it'd be neat to go with it if you want and GM Nightmare approves. Your connection to my character could be either as my own hire (during one of his more lucid periods of realizing he could probably use the help), or as someone hired and assigned to my character by his family as equal parts bodyguard and babysitter (in their minds). In this context, you'd probably have plenty of down time while my character does his "research" during which you could have independently met the professor and saved his life, fulfilling your own angle on the campaign traits as well.

I'm open to thoughts about this from both you and GM Nightmare, but wanted to get this thought out now so I can fall asleeo :P

@ Leedwashere: I have my characters background involving a university also, illegitimate waif abandoned and raised by janitor or staff. Lets see what GM Nightmare says and I will PM you.

I'd like to play a rogue type or a ranger.

All right, Emily should be pretty well done! Shopping's finished, and I've got all my fluff in place except for one memory - I'll get it in there when I get it worked out in my head. Hopefully you've got enough to go on for now. :)

Hey, I like the sound of this Nightmare so i'm throwing my hat into the ring. I'm considering at least a ranged character slayer or Kineticist, very undecided on that.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Decent rolls, I'll work on something today.

@GM Nightmare Knight - Sorry if i missed this! But will you be doing maps? Also are we using hero points?

Oh, quick question, Nightmare - what's your opinion on multiple characters submitted from one person? I happen to really enjoy character creation, and if another good idea for Carrion Crown strikes I'd potentially be interested in throwing another hat into the ring. (I know I wouldn't get selected on both characters - that'd be silly. :P)

Sounds fun! I'm thinking a Vivisectionist going for Wizard/Arcane Trickster would be pretty cool.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Not bad at all. I'll see what I can do.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
