About Emily DunnFive (plus two) points:
1) Born to a noble family in Karcau, Emily has lived in Ustalav her entire life, and has enjoyed a life of comfort and plenty. 2) Emily has enjoyed working with complex mechanical devices since childhood, and was disassembling and reassembling her clockwork toys by the time she was ten. 3) Seeing her skills, her parents enrolled her in the University of Lepidstadt, and she's studied there for just over four years now, having recently received her degree in applied arcana and construct theory. 4) The capstone of Emily's degree was a clockwork golem she built. But, before she could attempt to activate it using the usual techniques, it suddenly came to life on its own, introducing itself as Korrishan and speaking of a mission from the axiomites to purge chaos from Ustalav. She realized that it had been awakened as an inevitable, a construct/outsider hybrid, and it has expressed its loyalty to her as its creator. 5) Upon touching Korrishan, Emily received a strange jolt of power through her body, and she discovered that the inevitable's new energy had suffused her as well, giving her magical abilities that could help Korrishan in its fight. 6) Such an interesting phenomenon has Emily fascinated, and she's agreed to travel with Korrishan, observing it and aiding it in its fight. The adventuring will serve as field work for her masters' thesis with the University. 7) Professor Lorrimor met Emily at a lecture at the University two years ago, and immediately took notice of her prodigious talent. Since then, the two have corresponded, the Professor encouraging Emily in her studies. Hearing of his death, she plans to attend the funeral before setting off with Korrishan. After all, he encouraged her so in her studies - it would be an insult to his memory to miss laying him to rest. Two goals:
1) Complete her masters' thesis on inevitables, focusing on the interaction between material body and extraplanar energy and its effect on function compared to constructs activated through arcane means. 2) Gain enough magical power to create her own constructs - she is currently familiar with the technical workings, but lacks the magical ability to activate them herself. (She's working toward the Craft Constructs feat, if that's all right with you. That also means she'll be taking Craft Wondrous Items and Craft Magic Arms and Armor, which should help the group out.) Secrets:
1) Through her time at the University, she let people assume that she had magical ability that she chose not to use - in truth, she never would have been able to activate the golem that became Korrishan on her own. Because of her interaction with Korrishan, she's now gained magical talent, but she still tries to hide how new it is to her. 2) Partway through her second year, when her practical work began to take off in intensity, Emily noticed she was starting to feel run down, constantly tired. She suspected it was the stress of her suddenly increased workload, and indeed, when the holidays came and she took some time away from her research on construct power sources, the decline of her health stopped, though the tiredness never quite seemed to fade. In truth, it wasn't stress that was poisoning Emily - it was the abysium that was the center of so many of her breakthroughs. Still a rare material, no one, including her, quite understands yet the lingering effects it can have on those that handle it regularly, nor the extent of the safety measures that must be taken to avoid these ill effects. Because, you know, STR 8 and CON 10. And Madame Curie. XD She's hoping her time in the field will help to rejuvenate her and get some of her energy back - she doesn't want to worry anyone. Ties:
1) Emily's parents, Charles and Isabel Dunn, live in their manor in Karcau. Doting parents, they have always considered their only daughter's happiness their top priority - maybe to a fault. Now that Emily is away from home, they're beginning to find they have little in common anymore, and their recent excessive spending is perhaps an effort to fill the void. 2) At the University, Emily's bitterest rival (at least in her own mind) was her former roommate, Katelin Blackwood (and her pompous little ferret familiar, too). Emily's equal in technical skill, Katelin also possessed an aptitude for spellcasting that Emily secretly coveted, and Emily wouldn't mind a chance run-in to show off her new casting ability and shake off Katelin's (entirely true) suspicions that Emily had no magical skill through her undergraduate years. Katelin, for her part, holds no animosity toward Emily; indeed, she never understood why Emily decided to move out of the flat they shared after their sophomore year. 3) Her closest friend at the University is Brandon Mathers, who is currently working on completing his final year. The two started their school years together, but Brandon's family was not as well off as the Dunns, and working for his tuition has slowed down his schooling. It seemed the two were unlikely to be friends, with their situations so different, but they hit it off swimmingly, and he's helped to broaden her mindset from her sheltered upbringing. Three memories:
1) Emily, I keep coming back again and again to the papers you've sent me concerning the use of abysium as an alternate repository for arcane energies to lend power to constructs built thus. Inspired, though it's certainly not an abundant material, and there's much about it we don't know yet. But your work will be at the forefront of fixing that, and just the thought of the power amplification it could lend - stunning. Truly, you are a promising young talent. Your offer to hand off my sponsorship is generous - I hope you've found a worthy peer in need of a benefactor. Whether I sponsor you monetarily or not, though, I wholeheartedly entreat you to continue in your research. For a second-year student to show so much talent for such complex subject matter is stunning; it would be a regrettable waste if you were to put it aside. You shall make mighty leaps in the field, Emily. I know it for a fact. With high hopes for your future, Professor Petros Lorrimor Emily couldn't help but smile, even on her fifth read-through of the Professor's letter. Dipping quill into ink, she began her reply. Professor Lorrimor, I assure you, Mr. Mathers shall prove quite a worthy recipient... 2)
I am Korrishan. Where is my creator? Thoroughly shaken, Emily could only stare. And slowly it dawned on her - the voice hadn't been audible. It had been inside her mind. Slowly, the golem pushed itself upright and turned its head to face her, clockworks whirring. I am Korrishan. Are you my creator? Somehow, though completely within her mind, her own reply came out as a timid squeak. Y-yes? I mean, yes. I built you? But I didn't- Activate me? Irrelevant, in my case. I am Korrishan, inevitable, material creation and immaterial spirit joined. My spirit sought a body capable of holding it, giving it form for its task. Yours was chosen as superior. An inevitable?! But I thought they were only legend! she wondered to herself in awe. It - you can't - What is true must by definition be possible; else how can it come to be? I am now spirit given form, true inevitable. Now it is time to take up my task. You are of Ustalav, yes? That place is chaos; it is my task to bring order to the chaos. I am now inexperienced, and my form lacks several features that may prove useful, but with help I will grow strong. It reached forth a metal hand, and Emily couldn't help but meet the gesture in fascination. Their fingers met, warm flesh to cold metal, and suddenly a feeling Emily still can't describe washed through her. She'd been shocked before - this felt like a thousand times more energy, yet the sensation wasn't one of pain. It was one of - of potential. Now you are possessed of tools to aid me in my task. Will you aid me in my task? Possessed of tools? What tools? But then she realized she already knew the answer. With a word and a flick of her wrist, light sprang to life from the quill in her hand, and she stared in wonder, grinning like an idiot. I can cast spells now! The mechanical voice cut through the reverie in her mind. My question remains unanswered. Will you aid me in my task? After such a gift, there was only one possible answer. Yes. Besides - think of the field notes I'll get.
Fears:
Emily harbors an irrational fear of heights. She'll stay as far back as possible from any drop-off she's near; Brandon talking about cliff-diving on his summer holidays made her squirm. She's even seen a few paintings facing down into canyons and the like that set her stomach a little on edge. There's no apparent reason for it - no long fall as a child, no family member killed by a fall or jump. High places just scare her. Appearance and Personality:
Though once she dressed in the finest clothes her parents' money could buy, Emily now favors the simple, no-nonsense dress of the University - a belted robe, a simple cap, soft shoes, and a cloak for the cold. Her brown hair is long, and luxurious when brushed out, but hardly anyone sees it that way; it's usually tucked neatly into a knot or braid at the back of her neck to keep it out of the way while she's working. Her classically beautiful features are usually streaked with lubricant oil, and rarely if ever made up to accentuate them. Her noble birth and upbringing is still apparent in how she carries herself, though - tall and proud, with obvious training in decorum and poise. She still retains a hint of the arrogance her high station taught her, though it's mostly toned down to quiet self-assurance now. Time at the University has mellowed her somewhat, especially her friendship with her closest companion Brandon, a lower-class student working long hours to pay his way through. Very well-spoken, Emily loves to discuss technical matters at length, though she has little patience for the gossip that once filled her days as a young debutante.
