As I said above, I won't be reviewing characters to keep things fair. By the way, I consider your PC almost complete: when you'll take him back to level 1, I'll add him to the complete submissions' list.

Hey there, new player hoping to submit this character for your game. Pretty happy with how it turned out and I feel like I got the fluff and mechanical bits to match up how I wanted pretty well. Kind of wanted to reflavor the map you get with the campaign trait but that's something that probably only matters if I get picked. Also have to figure out what I'm supposed to do with all of that money that comes with the trait. I literally have no idea on how to spend 200 gold on mundane equipment for a sorcerer.

Hakeem's all done, I will probably do an appearance write-up at some point but here's my completed submission!

For those who wanna see it without going to the profile

Spoiler:
---------------
Prologue
---------------
Hakeem was born on the plains surrounding Kalabuto twenty-four years ago to the Bas'o tribe. Raised communally by the matriarchal society on the Savannah, Hakeem was taught of their relatively peaceful ways of self-sustenance. His was a warrior culture, but only as a last-resort when threatened, challenged, or deeply insulted. They used simple weapons and their bare hands, wearing no armor into battle, preferring mobility to steel-skin. He was taught the basic skills in his youth that would aid him in surviving the Mwangi expanse in his later years, following the antelope herds through the plains. The young Zenj boy developed a deep respect for these creatures, and also the other dangerous jungle creatures that hunted the antelope. Particularly the Jaguar, whose fierce hunting techniques awed and inspired Hakeem.

In his teenage years he was developing into a strong hunter and gatherer, true to his tribal upbringing. The next wrinkle in his story came when he befriended an old hermit and worshiper of Gozreh. This elder member of his tribe further refined the young Hakeem's practical skills in the natural world, as well as introduced a philosophical angle in quiet meditation and lessons on Gozreh's teachings from Hymns to the Winds and Waves which the old hermit orated from memory.

A life of survival still demanded a fierce physical regiment, that Hakeem supplemented with the prayers, rules for personal behavior and the respect of nature that Gozreh taught. Through either divine intervention or sheer force of will, the self-taught 'monk' of the Mwangi expanse has developed techniques that allow him to channel the power of storms, and imbue his strikes with electricity. The technique is taxing on the young monk, and he seeks out adventure partially to grow in his connection to the Wind and the Waves. Hakeem bid his friends and family in the Bas'o tribe farewell, and embarked on a wandering pilgrimage into the wild.

While on his journey , he passed through the town of Senghor for several days coinciding with the Jenivere's stay in port. During this time, Hakeem struck up a few conversations with Ishirou, the Tian man. The two related to each other's aloof(but not rude) personalities, and became fast friends easily. To offer gentle advice to his new, directionless friend, and to simply be on the sea; Hakeem had decided to board the Jenivere.

Ok, I am actually really happy with my submission. I want him to eventually use poison on his blowgun, for flavor (jungle warrior, after all!), and may multi-class to rogue for that. That's something I would have to decide later on, as the campaign moves on.

Complete submissions' list so far:

    Arcane Casters

  • Jesari Sevandir: NG female human sorcerer (serpentine bloodline)
  • Marcus Olgran De Macini: LN male human wizard (conjurer)

    Fighting Classes

  • Hakeem Ibuk'o: LG male human monk
  • Faratim: N male grippli ranger

@Hakeem:
If you plan to finish off your PC with a physical description, maybe you want to know that I would prefer you to change the picture you have in the avatar for Hakeem, since it's that of an important NPC of the campaign, and having the same appearance as him could be...weird

I present Elderas D'ua. After some consideration I've gone with an Elf instead of a dwarf. Specifically an elf who has run away from home to see the world and is just starting to think about returning.

Mechanically she is a bard who has been working on sailing ships. (more skillbot than either caster or fighter types)

I'm not wedded to the choice of dwarvish as a language.

My other PbF here has been as DM where you can see I kept a steady once a day posting rate.

I'm not sure how to link Ailyth in with one of the NPCs or an organisation, but will be happy to expand Ailyth's background as necessary if selected....

Here is Ailyth's background as it stands, and a brief physical description.

Background:

Ailyth sat cross-legged on the prow of the Jenivere as it surged through the deep blue salty water towards the south. Despite the cloudless day the wind felt cold to the wildborn half-elf who had never even seen the sea before she had arrived in the city of Bloodcove in chains less than a month earlier. Reaching up, she touched the, now dry, quest-mask that she had repainted across her face as soon as she had boarded the ship. The Ala’ryali – those on their dawn quests, were not to remove the mark until they had proven themselves worthy to become hunters, and the shame having it washed from her face after her capture still burnt. Well, at least she had made the the Haelyn – those who called themselves the “Aspis Consortium” pay for what they had done, both to her and to the northern jungle where a gaping sore marked the place where they dug for gold, the poisons from their mines seeping into the river. There was only one of the three left to kill – the one who called himself Manleus, who had left for the south before Ailyth had managed to escape the floating prison she had been kept in and who, it now seemed, would be the focus of her dawn quest.

Appearance:

Ailyth stands short, even for a half-elf at only 5ft.2in. Her skin is lightly tanned and her black hair is long, as befits one who has not yet joined the ranks of the hunters. Her face is bisected by a dark stripe painted over her eyes in indelible ink - marking her as currently undertaking her Dawn quest which marks the passage from childhood to adulthood amongst the Ekujae. Ailyth carries four spears strapped to her back and a set of bolas hang from her simple hide belt. She wears black-stained studded leather armour.

Yep, got it taken care of. I've been thinking about the family curse a bit more the last few days too and I wanted to add a little bit more to it for the added story hooks. I was thinking my character's grandfather would have been hired by the Aspis Consortium as a guide and translator for an expedition headed for an ancient ruin steeped in mystery and legends of terrible curses that would befall any who entered. He knew all about this of course, but chose to ignore his tribe's warnings in favor of the Consortium's coin. Stuff happened in the temple, everyone gets cursed by some ancient lizardfolk curse, my character's grandfather gets shunned by his tribe both for his arrogance and out of fear the curse might bring ruin to the tribe.

Still trying to work out all the specifics in my head. I mostly just need to figure out why he would want to send his granddaughter back. Thought it'd be neat to have a few elderly Consortium members or their offspring with varying degrees of reptilian features out there that have a bone to pick with the guide that they've come to blame. Not sure how to write it all into the background though. I'll probably just cram the story into its own spoiler so it doesn't overshadow the background of the character I'm actually playing.

If there is need for a divine caster Ailyth could be easily re-worked as a druid without changing her background.

I'd like to submit Morgrym the Ashborn for your consideration. His backstory is a little vague on details, but I imagine Morgrym's bizarre mind rarely stores information he deems unnecessary, like the name of his clan or former associates. Hopefully his stats are also in order.

Also, Morgrym has a journal which I'm not entirely sure is actually a legal item, as d20pfsrd says it's from Ultimate Equipment. Given a travelling spellbook is basically the same thing with a different name, I hope you'll allow it. It also seems odd to me it took them that many pathfinder books to put in a journal for your character to write in!

So, I'm just going to ask and this may or may not be a dumb question, but is Juju Oracle a legal class choice for this AP? I believe the mystery was actually released IN the Serpent's Skull AP (City of Seven Spears), but the AP itself isn't actually listed in the legal sources!

I think thats because it goes without saying ;)

Seth86 wrote:

Yeah I kinda figured? But it didn't come out until the third book, so I wasn't sure if it'd have an impact!

Its part of the AP. So im sure its fine. But im not the GM... just my 2cp

Hi Mimesyne, yes, the juju mistery is perfectly legal for the campaign. Eveything that is contained in the SS AP is legal, though I didn't mention it.

So, updated submissions' list:

  • Ailyth: CG female half-elf ranger (Skirmisher/Beast Master)

  • Morgrym the Ashborn: N male dwarf inquisitor (Groetus)
  • Serenity: LE female human ranger (Red Mantis Assassins affiliation)

Pttthhh, divine casters, who needs them. It's not like we're going to die from some horrible tropical disease right?

S'fine, the crazy dwarf got this. We won't encounter any til 7th level, right?

Similarly, Hakeem could potentially be reworked as a divine caster pretty easily!

Still need to feature a little blurb or two regarding this guy's personality and appearance, just had a bit of a busy week

GM Giuseppe

Spoiler:
Ah, I really should have paid more attention to that lol. Changed the avatar, but it wasn't easy. I wish there were more good representations of male Mwangi characters. I'm still batting around the idea of making Hakeem, Hakeema, haha.

Hi GM Giuseppe,

I have a PC that I'd like to play.

However, it's fair to warn you that I played him in a now defunct Serpent's Skull game. We made it to about half-way of the first AP (I think).

Please let me know if that's an issue.

Thanks,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Please consider Alexite Krupt for inclusion in your game.

He's a noble scion 'gone wild'. I read Sargava, the Lost Colony, to prepare his background and ground him to the campaign, but, of course, feel free to disregard any of this information if it clashes with your vision of the area.

Here's a little preview (his full stats are in the alias).

Appearance, Background, and Personality:

APPEARANCE

Light brown hair cut shoulder-length frames a strong, clean-shaven face. Compact, stringy muscle under white skin burned tan by many years outdoors allow Alexite to move gracefully even with a heavy load. The ranger has a well-oiled chain shirt under his snug clothes. Leather boots on his feet and his weapons (shortbow, dagger, and spear) complete the picture.

BACKGROUND (from Alexite)

Now, with a few decades under my belt, I see things more clearly. I was born to luxury and carry a family name hundreds of years old. My family has lived surrounded by the finer things in life since they settled this beautiful land but that needs to change and the sooner the better.

I’ll start at the beginning... my family name is Krupt, of noble lineage in far off Cheliax. My ancestors, lured by promises of riches, came to settle what is now called Sargava. Several hundred years later and my family is the proud owner of vast tracts of lands where pineapples and figs are grown and where cattle roam the seemingly endless plains. My childhood memories are filled with plantations, lazy summers, and all the trappings of a noble family. I was taught to hunt and track and to wield the family sword, all in preparation for my brief but mandatory stint in the Sargavan Guard, whom my ancestors had the vision of founding.

As a member of one of the founding colonial families, I was quickly given command of a scouting unit that best suited my skills and interests. We were assigned to Kalabuto; it was 4702 and the third Mzali invasion was just shaping up.

I was never meant to go to war; my father tried his best to pull me out when he heard the news but by then it was too late. Under my unskilled command, my scouting unit was ambushed. Half of us perished right there and then; I was lucky to have been saved by a couple of old veterans, locals much to my embarrassment. My Colonial upbringing was about to clash head-on with the reality of Sargava. It was a tough couple of days but I finally relinquished command of my unit to those better suited for it. That single action saved my life and has since shaped my outlook on everything.

We managed to survived, the four of us that were left from the original twelve. It was during these months that I learned the true art of the wild. I was taught to move as silently and swiftly as the wind, to tell which roots to eat and which would kill you, which animals screamed the least when they died, and I was taught to hunt. Not animals, I already knew that; I was taught to hunt men.

As much as I learned from my practical lessons, my most important experience was the gift of sight. True sight, not the one where we imagine how things are because of what others tell us or because of what we want to see. This was unadulterated sight, really seeing things for what they truly are without adding any bias to it. So I saw how the Ivory Cross put down the Mzali rebellion when called in (and were paid handsomely for it) but did nothing to rescue the Sargavan Guard. I saw the Ivory Cross instigate native uprising so they could then be hired to put them down. And I saw how the natives were thought of and treated like second class citizens when they had a lot to teach on how to truly thrive in this land.

My new-found sight came accompanied with a new-found voice with which I confronted my family telling them the truths that had been hidden from me. Ignored and told to keep quiet to maintain the status quo, I learned that my family profited from the Ivory Cross contracts and our substandard treatment of the natives. Disgusted, I left my easy life, my estate, my plantation, and cut ties with my past. Elated with my freedom, I returned to the land and those that saved my life and taught me so much.

I still carry my name, much to my family’s discontent, because I believe that things can be different. I am as much local here as any of the natives but I want to change the way the Colonials treat the true natives.

After a few years of roaming Sargava and the Mwangi Expanse, I’m heading to Eleder to see first-hand how things are at the capital.

PERSONALITY

Alexite has learned a new respect for life, especially native life in Sargava. He’s lost his noble haughtiness and has replaced it with an even temper. Although still in his 30s, he speaks like a veteran of many battles. He is slow to anger but his temper is slow to rein in when ignited. The subject of the exploitation of the natives by either colonial or foreign powers is something dear to his heart and he is trying to find a way to change this in Sargava. The fact that he is also not fond of foreign trading companies pillaging the natural resources of the region has not made him very popular among some of the Colonials. Only his last name keeps him from being subjected to the same treatment the Colonials reserve for the natives.

Please let me know if you require further information at this time.

Thanks,

Fabian

Alright, so I've started to look over some of the splat books that are relevant to the campaign. I'll admit it's an overwhelming large amount of info to sift through! I'd like to get to it all eventually, but if you could point me to specific places I may want to look first that directly relate to my character concept, I'd be quite appreciative.

I'm looking at building a Juju Oracle (a Juju Priest) from the Mwangi Jungle. There's not tons of info on Juju, except perhaps in the AP book it was released in but I'm trying to avoid cracking that open! I don't want to glean anything I maybe shouldn't if I get into this campaign and all. What I've googled seems a bit sparse too, though perhaps it just means I get a lot of wiggle room to invent things!

Specifically, I'm looking for inspirations on what would pull a Juju priest from her cozy home and off across the land and sea. I know most of this will depend on her own goals and motivations, but I like to make those really align with the lore and circumstances of the regions. Slaving seems like the best option so far, but I don't know if that really fits well.

You don't really need to read everything is legal. Hope I can offer some guidance.

I've read many times the juju entry ("The Path of Juju") on Serpent's Skull AP #3, "City of Seven Spears", and I can assure you that is absolutely spoiler-free. It's the main source I recommend to you. If you're afraid to glean something you shouldn't, just skip to pp.66-71.

On juju priests and their belief compared to traditional totemism, shamanism and ancestors' worship you can look at Heart of the Jungle, pp. 18-19.

Why leave your home and then manage to get aboard a ship to come back? Well, I think that this is mainly up to you. Very pleased to see that you want your PC's events to be coherent with the campaign setting, so I'm giving a few tips. Slavery fits well, and I feel Cheliax is the most likely place where slavers could have taken your character. This gives you the opportunity to have some ties to Cheliax, Cheliaxians, slavery, racism and religious intolerance, all of which are main themes of the AP. I can think at othere motivations too, but I hope you understand that I can't offer more suggestions for now.

I think it's fair to inform all the applicants that I've decided to use Roll20 for combat encounters. I manage to prepare some encounters, and the results seems good. Anyone has issues with that?

I haven't used Roll20 before, what exactly would that entail? I'm guessing nothing more complicated than setting up an account but wanted to double check

What do you mean by "roll 20" ? I'm assuming this is a different rule then the standard of rolling a d20 and adding your attack modifier.

Roll20

It's basically an online tabletop. Usually used to host live online games, but it works great for battlemaps for PBPs.

Well sounds good but I don't want to mess around with yet another website. Bouncing back and forth between the two. So I'm out thank you for the consideration.

That should be fine; no issues here.

That's fine, I've created an account on there for GMSoul's Crypt of the Everflame game I play in on theses boards

You're welcome! I greatly enjoyed making this character!

Roll20 is fine for me as well!

Just wanted to chime in and say I'm still around. Just fine tuning my concept at the moment.

I've made him a Taralu dwarf as opposed to the Mwangi I'd originally pitched. Fled his tribe with his daughter after committing a terrible crime. In their flight from the expanse, he and his daughter became indebted to the Aspis. Now several years later, the Aspis have come to collect. Sending him to Sargava due to his expertise with the jungle to further their own ends.

I'm planning on having the full submission written up by tomorrow. Any feedback would be appreciated. His exact orders are probably best left to you Giuseppe as you'll know best how to fit it into the campaign.

I'm going to be going through some of this reading, and trying to have something whipped up in terms of backstory and what not here in a couple days. Got the crunch done. I'm loving how Juju Oracle looks mechanically, and the flavor is to die for in this campaign. It's almost like it was made for it ;)

I'm all good with Roll20. I even have an account.

Glad to hear this. I can't give you a feedback for now, since as I've said above I prefer to see what everyone can do, pick the best and then work together on fixing or improving the background and everything else.

I've never done Roll20 before but I'm cool with it.

Hello! I'd like to submit my half-elf cleric for consideration. He has a strong interest in Shimaye-Magalla. I've reflected this by making him a cleric of Gozreh with the separatist archetype, taking the Luck domain to represent Desna.

Background:

All Niru can remember of his mother is a quicksilver sense of charm and menace. She was a Ekujae elf who only called herself Thistle, and spoke little of where she came from. Nikodimus Etrigan found her as he was supervising the unloading of and Aspis consortium affiliated ship in Bloodcove. Apparently a recently escaped slave, she was hiding in the cargo hold. The crew was ready to return her to her captors for a finder’s fee when she made a bold offer. Staring down the man in charge she declared she would faithfully enter into ten years of indentured servitude with Aspis, if then be set free. Almost anyone else making such an offer would be laughed at and summarily clubbed into unconsciousness, but this elf was different. She radiated confidence and intensity. Niru’s father was a man whose life heretofore was a series of calculated risks, here he took another one and took her on as his servant.

Quickly she became his most important asset. She was a messenger, spy, advisor and negotiating partner. As a servant elf she was often ignored by those around her she had an uncanny capacity to read people and situations. Together they knit together an efficient network of traders, smugglers and spies working closely with the Ijo tribesmen in the area between Bloodcove and Crown’s End.

A few years into their association their relationship bore fruit in the form of the young Niru. The birth of a child to a servant elicited little more than shrugs from most. It was latter reported to him by his father’s closest associates that Nikodimus himself had profoundly mixed feelings about the matter, which he covered up by asserting that in time Niru would be another valuable asset.

Ten years to the day after they met Thistle deposited the six year old Niru in front of his father and declared her debt paid, she was leaving. Niko was too stunned to stop her from walking out the door and vanishing into the jungle. For a while things went on as they had before. Niru’s father was mostly distant and as he grew up he spent much of his time working amongst the Ijo employed by his father, their easy manner amid all the troubles in Sargava was comforting and inspiring to him.

As he grew into adolescence Niru’s father began to change. He started slipping in his business operations and became increasingly obsessed with religion, eventually fixating on Gozreh and the Eye of Abendengo. He would talk in an increasingly disjointed fashion about “piercing the veil” and “seeing the heart” of things. It was sat this time that he seemingly began to notice his son for the first time, at last taking note of his reflective nature. He pulled Niru away from consortium related operations and sent him to live with a handful of devout followers of Gozreh.

Niru had very mixed feelings. They seemed harsh and dour, profoundly unlike the Bonuwat tribesmen with whom he felt at home. Never the less he found himself moved by the power of nature around him and he applied himself to studying the ways of Gozreh. Just when he began to feel the stirrings of divine potency within he received news that his father had gone.

Fully in the grip of his religious obsession Niko had declared that the Eye was the most important event in modern history and that he must recover one of the masks worn by the orginal Storm Kindlers to try and understand it. He departed with a small group of second wave Storm Kindlers to the Sodden Lands.

Now a young adult, Niru traveled to the capital to confer with his only remaining relative, his father’s half-brother Benitus, himself a long time Aspis operative. Benitus immediately laid the blame with Thistle declaring she had somehow driven his father mad. He gave the young Niru a small sack of gold as an inheritance, saying his father was certainly dead or as good as, and offered him a job with his company. He warned him to stay away from the Sodden Lands and his mother but was unsuprised when Niru instead arranged passage with the Bonuwat to Jula.

In the end Niru found terror and fear and near death in the Sodden Lands but never saw his father. What he did find was an abandoned inn, fruitlessly fortified against attack by his father and associates, the door smashed into splinters. Inside there were no valuables, just meaningless papers and personal affects scattered about. The goz mask so ardently sought was there, cloven in two pieces. The only thing of value he did find was a journal belonging to his father. Only partially intact it contained long ranting passages that seemed to confirm his uncle’s impression. It seemed his father believed that Thistle was sending him messages and portents from wherever she had vanished into the jungle. It was never clear to what end.

Unmoored from his life and distraught he continued traveling with the little money he had left. Following the stirrings of a divine yearning in his heart he traveled to Varisia to learn about Desna in the land that venerated her. The free spirited church of Desna was fascinating and liberating to him but it lacked the gravitas he found in Gozreh’s connection to his homeland. Increasingly he thought on the faith of the Bonuwat. Their faith in Shimye-Magalla became more and more compelling. He resolved to return home and follow his faith in that fusion wherever it led, certain that his troubled homeland needed the answers it could provide.

He spent the last of his gold to board one final ship home. Hoping to find his uncle and tell him about what he has found about his father, and hoping to show the faithful of Gozreh what he has learned in Varisia. He feels the people of Sargava are trapped by a dark vision of the past, and that Desna made one with Gozreh offers a future tied to the land they love but free from the chains of tyranny and the cycle of violence. His last communication from his uncle in the capital was disturbing, stories of his father’s old network disintegrating, operatives behaving strangely. Bentius clearly blames Thistle, and has balefully declared his intention to end the problem.

Niru affects a mild demeanor and endeavors to always be conciliatory and approachable. Having spent much of his childhood among the Ijo he has learned to wear the easy smile of the Bonuwat tribesmen, but underneath there are flashes of his mother’s intensity and his father’s calculation. Having been on board the ship since Magnimar he has had plenty of time to converse with the gnome Gelik Aberwhinge, often spending hours on end in discussions of religion, philosophy, history and politics. Niru has not had the opportunity to be as well informed as he would like, but he is a good listener and the two have gotten along well. His knowledge of sailing and sympathetic ear have also struck a chord with Alton Devers who has taken the opportunity to unburden himself of some of his resentments towards the captain. He is very much the sort to have private conversations aimed at repairing frayed relationships and soothing perceived slights. Niru has taken an interest in the welfare of his fellow half-elf Aeyrs Mavato, attempting to make her feel welcome and inquiring after her health without wanting to seem as though he was prying into her business. He is also strongly interested in Ieana’s scholarly pursuits but again does not want to be rude, hoping that his patience and respect for scholarship will be we rewarded with insight.

Otm-Shank here. Looks like I'm going to have to finish up my submission tomorrow. Somewhat under the weather at the moment.

Crunch is nearly done though and the backstory is well underway.

@Niru, I'm fairly certain the separatist archetype isn't among the list of available character creation material. The full list is linked in the first post :)

Oops! Good catch. It's from Ultimate Magic, which is funny because I had already nixed variant channeling for that reason. Here I thought I was being so clever. Ah well, straight up Gozreh it is.

Mimesyne here.

So this girl here is not done yet, but I've started an outline of my character to start building up her background. I figured I've been so quiet and taking so long on this character that I ought to say something at this point. I'm trying to put a bit of a unique spin on the slaving idea, though that part in particular is still under the microscope as I look for ways to improve it. It may change as I continue plowing through the splat books about the Mwangi and Sargava.

But, this should give you an idea on where I'm going at this point. Now I just have to add some meat to this skeleton concept!

Grand Lodge

Dot. Be back soon.

Nice character you got there Mimesyne! Good luck in the recruitment!
