Background:
Jesari's story begins with her grandfather, Tgamo, and his exodus from his Mwangi homeland. Settling in Kintargo and eventually finding a Chelish wife whose surname he assumed since he lacked one of his own, Tgamo never really seemed to let go of the culture and land he inexplicably left behind, becoming well known both among his new family and the town as a passionate storyteller of Mwangi myths and legends. There was only one story he never told, no matter the circumstance or the inquirer: why he left.
For years, it seemed Jesari was nothing but an ordinary girl struggling to fit into Chelish society despite her personal magnetism and kind soul. The bond between her and her grandfather was always close but as Jesari grew and a hidden magical talent emerged, the bond was strengthened even further. Tgamo always seemed to know what Jesari was going through, calmly offering her advice even in her most desperate times. However, Tgamo's lessons always ended with the same declaration that Jesari refused to accept: she had to return to her ancestral homeland of Mwangi. She was Chelish -- end of story -- and she was going to make it work in spite of her strange abilities.
Jesari struggled for some time to find her place in Kintargo, eventually finding a tenuous position among the city's worshippers of Shelyn. To Jesari, it always seemed like the best way to fit in in a city that valued art and culture so highly with the added bonus that Jesari agreed with the teachings of Shelyn more than any other she heard in the city square. Those reasons were largely why she tried so hard to make her apprenticeship work despite the struggles she faced. Jesari tried to channel her innate magic into the divine spells the priests manifested with no luck and tried every craft the clergy assigned her with little success, only finally finding marginal success with music after years of training with the clergy.
But just as Jesari felt she was finally starting to find a place she belonged in Cheliax, Tgamo passed away, and in his passing had left a final request that Jesari be the one to bring his ashes to the land his soul longed to return to. It was a request she didn't have the heart to refuse and it appeared her grandfather would finally get his wish of seeing Jesari in Mwangi. And so, with a heavy heart, a sense of dread, and her grandfather's ashes safely secured in her backpack, Jesari boarded the Jenivere, a ship bound for Mwangi lands.
It was only after weeks of sailing toward her destination that the voices began, and with them, Jesari felt her magical talents grow beyond the point of the barely controlled tricks they once were in Cheliax. Her heart ached with a desire for something, though she knew not what, its pull and urgency growing stronger each day. Coupled with the strange whispers that came in her dreams, it became clear that her grandfather wasn't the only one that wanted her in Mwangi. It was all enough to pique her curiosity and excite her imagination, extending her plans to stay in Mwangi beyond the bare minimum she had initially planned, and for the first time in her life, she found herself wanting answers.
Personality:
Like any true devotee of Shelyn, Jesari always seems able to find some redeeming quality in everyone she meets, no matter how standoffish or rude they may come off as to others. Having always been so out of place in Cheliax, Jesari is adept at finding ways to fit in amid a group of unfamiliar and unfriendly faces. Jesari also inherited her grandfather's silver tongue, able to delight an audience with conversation and fanciful tales, both true and imagined.
Jesari dislikes violence in general and has little combat experience beyond the temple's rudimentary weapons training that was meant to be more of a means of expression rather than a form of self-defense. Taking a human life is not something she could do easily, especially given her tendency to form attachments to others and her faith's guidelines on such matters.
Appearance:
Jesari's mixed heritage is readily apparent, the dark skin of her Mwangi ancestors mixing with the pale skin of her Chelish mother and grandmother to give Jesari's skin a caramel complexion. Her hair is several mixed shades of brown that stops just short of being described as curly, instead being a voluminous tangle of wavy hair that seems to have a mind of its own some days. An almost permanent smile is affixed to her face, the young woman always seemingly able to find some joy in whatever it is she finds herself doing. Jesari tends to dress in light and brightly colored fabrics, and while her attire lacks the jewelry and finer tailoring that one would expect from a noble, she clearly has a sense of fashion above that of the average city dweller.
