@Justified: That's fine

Hovering on the edge of violence, Justified lashes out at the guildmistress. He weapon flashes with deadly aim. She grunts in pain, but the weapon doesn't cut nearly as deeply as one would expect

Not allowing the woman a moment of respite, Ignius whirls his hands in a complex set of gestures and once again calls upon the inborn power of flame that he carries in his blood. Jaws extending, Ignius screams out a wordless howl, inaudible to any by the woman. The heat from the hidden word, blisters her skin and dazes her.

I am confused about where people are. And I believe the random initiative of "the Party is up" is addition to confusion and maybe a detriment to our ability to function. Justified is pretty wounded and intents to withdraw if there is no space to step back to. That would create plenty of space for Graythan's maneuver but the order of things is confused. I fully understand that letting everyone post is intended for the goodness of speeding up the normally painfully slow PBP combat round, but in these tight quarters it seems to be aiding the enemy.

retired

We'll be better off if I can pull of this bull rush. Graythan would be adjacent to both baddies if it works, and Justified could fall back to Rast (or Rast move up to Justified) without risking AoO's or anything.
So, that being said.... Please move out of Greythan's way, Moira, so this astronomically small chance to succeed on this bull rush works =P

Feel free to plan things out in the discussion.

Did Moira make her way past the creature? She failed the acrobatic check hence the creature got an AoO on her but did she move past it during this maneuver?

Moira, Above the DM explains that you needed a 19+5 (for tumbling through the enemy square ) so your attempt failed. He did not explain where you ended up though.

retired

If you fail the Acrobatics check to move through an opponent's square, your move action is lost and you suffer an AoO. Moira has a move -or- standard action left if she'd care to try again.

Ah. Somewhere I was recalling falling prone. So is she back in her starting square then?

retired

I think Moira would be in the square in front of the Ripnugget and the remainder of the move action lost. If Moira were further away, it'd be weird to move 3 squares, fail to tumble through a dude in the 4th square, and then suddenly teleport back to the first square. That's how the rules seem to work out to me, at least. Gotta defer to Fanguar if others still think the situation nebulous and open to debate.

M Human Lore Warden (Fighter 7): HP 70/70 AC: 19/13/16 F: +6 R: +5 W: +2 (3 vs fear), Per: +7 Init:+3)

Yes, but that is where Justified is. And the rules say we cannot occupy the same square unless one of us is unconscious I believe.

retired

Aaaah. In that case, if she ends her turn in that square with you, she'd be shunted back to the nearest open space. So, she can still spend her remaining move action to attempt the acrobatics check once more. If she fails that, at that point she'd stumble backward to the closest open square.
Accidentally Ending Movement in an Illegal Space

As far as I understand, she can try the tumble again. The lizard doesn't have any other AoOs left so it's a free attempt, though if she fails again, Graythan can't bullrush.

With people staying where they are Justified is unable to effectively attack with his reach weapon. He was wounded before the last attack and knows that another even average attack from the reptile will drop him so he chooses to withdraw to the back of the group. Bleeding from multiple wounds including a sever gash he stumbles back. I need healing. he manages.

Ha! Totally missed the wall, my bad. That makes the hit on Moira. Also, ya Ignius totally couldn't have cast that spell. So the guildmistress is due a turn. It's late, so I'll figure what to do tomorrow. Also FYI, this fight is the end of the first adventure.

So really we have to go back to see what Ignius might do. I think he could have moved behind Moira and cast the same spell. This would have least impact. And yes, I realized that he attack would land on Moira when it could not reach the wizard, which is I a said I am sorry to her. You have more HP than Justified. He was never meant to be a tank - more of a finesse fighter. Note that you are staggered, not out. You can do move actions but not standard and you are fine. The first standard or full round action and you drop and start to bleed AFTER you complete it. So you can still withdraw, but then you are down.

Ok, I am pulling a DM's fiat. I just realized that this adventure has been running over a year and at this rate it will take about 15 years to finish the campaign.

In the face of such formidable foes, the party falls back to a larger room, Gutripper follows, but interestingly the Guildmistress does not. Even in an area where they can use their numbers to their advantage, the party is still in tough with the tenacious lizard. In the heat of battle, you become distantly aware of the brief sounding of a horn.

Blood flows freely and on more than one occasion, the battle balanced on a knife edge, but in the end, you are victorious and the creature falls lifeless to the floor. You are physically and magically exhausted. Stopping only to remove the creature's magical collar, you stagger back to the Guildmitresses' chambers, only to find them empty, but they hold other treasures.

A bookshelf holds several minor objects of value. The books themselves are novels, mostly adventure stories or erotica, none of particularly high value. Some of the statuettes are valuable though, including an alabaster statuette of a succubus worth 350gp, an onyx statuette of a displacer beast worth 100 gp, and a silver statuette of a rearing unicorn worth 500 gp, Two coffers on the shelves are jewelry boxes, each worth 150gp. The darkwood coffer contains seven silver and gold chain necklaces and bracelets worth a total of 300 gp. The iron box contains a dozen rings and earrings worth a total of 550 gp.

A wooden cupboard contains several different articles of clothing sized for a human woman, including three courtier's outfits (worth 30 gp each), a noble's outfit worth 75 gp. and a flowing (and scandalous) robe of shimmering lavender silk worth 450 gp.

In the bedroom, a search of the dressing table turns up a large collection of exotic and expensive perfirmes, 24 vials in all. Twenty of these are worth 10gp apiece, but the last four are truly exotic imports from places with names like Mur, Alfheim, and Sigil. Each of these three vials is worth 200 gp. The final vial comes from a place named Shendilavri, and contains six doses that grant the wearer a +10 competence bonus on Diplomacy checks for 1 hour. One dose of this intoxicating perfume is worth 200 gp.

Hidden beneath the bed, you find a stack of love letters from Vanthus:

Excerpts from Vanthus’s Letters to Rowyn Kellani:

(Dated 2 days before the fire that slew the elder Vanderborens)
“...My parents have grown soft. I’m not worried in the slightest that they suspect anything, my delicate flower. The funds you’ve trusted me with have been more than enough to pay off the local guards, the harbor watch, and the ship’s crew to say nothing about the new cargo. Hell... they even offered to help load the barrels! Of course, I didn’t tell them what was inside— I’m sure they’d sing a different song if they knew just how much alchemist’s fire we loaded into the hold of my father’s new plaything. I’ll be following the ship’s progress for a few days to make sure the fire does the trick, so you’ll not be seeing me for at least half a week. Keep your bed warm for me!”

(Dated 3 days after the fire)
“...It’s unbelievable! Sure, she’s the eldest sibling, but she knows nothing of life! She spent the last half of her childhood in Thenalar learning how to fold napkins and play the violin, for Hell’s sake! It just goes to show you how insane my parents really were... leaving everything in her care like that! Whatever. She’ll need the house to live off of, I suppose. Lavinia’s not a bad lass, really... I kind of miss our time together, to tell the truth. Think she’d be interested in joining the Lotus? I doubt it. And anyway, a second Vanderboren tragedy might get too many people curious. No, for now, whatever’s in the vault will have to do...”

(Dated two days ago)
“...I really wish you could have been there, my little dragon. Lavinia’s never going to get anywhere hiring fools like them. I wonder if they’ve found Penkus yet? I hope they didn’t die too quickly.”
“In any case, on to the purpose of this letter. Brissa’s in the other room, getting ready for a night out on the town, so I’ll have to be quick. Remember that thing she hinted about to me? About the pirates who were supposedly using Kraken’s Cove as a base for their smuggling operation? Turns out she wasn’t spinning tales—I’ve heard that they’ll be arriving within the week with a particularly rich cargo. I’ll bring her with me on the pretext of joining up with them, get their guard down, and when they’re not expecting it my men’ll light the ships on fire! It’ll be a simple task to pluck the treasure from the water once all those fools are dead. Should be more than enough to make up for what we lost when Lavinia inherited rather than me.”
“I tell you... burning people to death on their own boats? It’s the best way to make money yet. Wish I’d thought of it years ago!”

Off of the bedroom you find the guild's treasure room. Some quick eyes and even quicker fingers from Moira prevent a number of nasty surprises from being sprung. Amongst the chests you find a fantastic amount of stolen wealth. These items represent the work of countless minor burglaries and thefts perpetrated upon Sassarine over the past several months. The total value of the stolen goods is 6450 gp.

LAstly you find a chest packed with gold and gemstones, all of which are neatly collected in silk bags bearing the Vanderboren family crest. It amounts to 8,600 gp in all.

At this time, you begin to smell smoke. Taking a scorched earth policy, the guild has set fire to their own base of operations. It is a near thing, but somehow you all manage to escape back to the surface with the guild's ill gotten gains before the flames and smoke overcome you.

You all advance to level 3

Graythan stumbles back out into the surface air, soot smeared across his forehead. Turning to look back at the corridor they'd all just narrowly escaped from, he slings his crossbow back over his shoulder with an air of satisfaction. He turns to the group, then does a double take as he notes a small tongue of fire dancing on his right sleeve. He pats the flame out nonchalantly and observes, "Well, that was a close one. Everyone alright?" His strange, blue eyes glitter brightly in the daylight.

"That's how cowards live so long, Justified. It worked for her, this time at least. I'm sure Lavinia will be interested in what we've found, particularly her stolen inheritance and those letters." Graythan looks around as the smoke coils up higher and higher into the air. "Let's be gone from here quickly. If we linger, we will need to answer questions best left unasked."

Graythan starts to hustle away from the scene when he stops short, inclining his head to one side. "Wait. What's that?" He pauses for a moment longer, listening intently for something. After a tense moment, he suddenly springs back to the collapsing tunnel from which he and the others had just emerged. After a few loud grunts and the loud sounds of groaning timber, the hagard dhampir clambers back up out of the passage. With him though, is a small and soot-covered figure, coughing violently.

Graythan helps the small figure forward gently, then looks up at Justified with a wry grin. "I recall you being very upset that Churtle burned you earlier, my friend. With her home burned down, I'd say that more than evens the score, wouldn't you?" Churtle looks up then, her soot-stained cheeks streaked with tears, "My pretty room! Auuuuuugh!" The pitiable goblin then decends into alternating between coughing and crying as Graythan leads her and the others away and to safety.

Moira emerges from the tunnel on all four limbs, much like a squirrel coming out of its borough. The dried blood, soot and dirt on her face and body seems almost natural for this once homeless half elf.

"That was fun. We should do it again." Moira says in an up beat attitude, even after being critically wounded by the giant lizard. She looks at herself. "Lookie me. I wonder if Lavinia will let me wash up in her place."

Randomly, Moira goes off on tangent. "I'm hungry. We should go back and bring the lizard corpse. It's still fresh. Probably a little cooked from the fire. Maybe we can make a stew out of it. Huh guys. Who's with me?"

After gathering up what they can carry Justified thinks about any loose ends. If the taxidermist is still in his shop we had better warn him that the Guildmistress got away. Then I think we need to deliver theses letters to Lavinia. I am not sure if we have enough information to intercept the pirate ship Vanthus referred to in that later letter. Anyone know who Brissa is? I guess we could ask around about her. Maybe Lavinia will know.

Lavinia is ecstatic with the return of the coins, "This is completely unexpected and wonderful. I insist that you keep half as a finders fee."

Listening to the account of you attack on the Lotus Dragons and purusing Vanthus' letters, Lavinia's face darkens. "This is much more serious than I could have imagined. From the sounds of things, the city nearly lost control of the harbour, and that would have been a crippling blow. I will see that the Dawn Counsel knows of your service to the city. As for my brother, I would ask that you do not give up your search. It seems that he and this Brissa have headed to someplace called Kraken's Cove. I'm sure someone on the seedier side of town might know where to find it (Diplomacy DC20 or Know(geography) DC15). That being said, Master Sloren Highwall of Highwall House is a bit of a fanatic for local geography and has been know to share his knowledge for a fee (50gp)."

"I'm beginning to take your brother's frequent yet narrow escapes personally. I'll catch him eventually, Lavinia." Graythan shifts, settling his weight on his back foot as he crosses his arms. "I'll begin to make inquiries regarding who this 'Brissa' might be as well as the whereabouts of Kraken's Cove, as you suggest. Though I'd rather not have to deal with Highwall, if it can be avoided." He glances to the others, "Unless any of you can save us the effort and have come across this shadowy cove in your past dealings?"

As the others move about making their various purchases and investments, Graythan sets to work trying to learn what he can of Kraken's Cove from the locals. It takes him the better part of the afternoon, but eventually he's able to glean some useful information from a pair of liquored up ruffians.

Knowledge of you destination in hand, it takes little time to find a fisherman willing to play ferry man for the day. No matter how much money you offer, he refuses to put you closer than a sheltered beach a few miles away. When pressed, he tells you that the Kraken's Cove is rife with pirates and he'll not risk his boat. Transport arranged, you leave in the grey predawn light and make the long voyage unmolested.

From the beach, you cut your way though the dense jungle brush in the general direction of you destination. Rounding a bend in the land, you see great plumes of smoke rising into the sky above the cove. Bizarrely, swaths of dead wildlife, from parrot to gull to monkey to snake, start to litter the ground, their bodies horribly distorted and deformed. What few wild animals you catch sight of are similarly deformed, and shockingly aggressive. You see many animals savagely tearing each other apart and more that once you are forced to dispatch one of these mutated horrors before it you gnaw out your eyes.

Finally you break through the foliage and find yourselves on a low bluff overlooking the water. In the sheltered cove below, an inferno rages. Several ships, including a two masted caravel, a size able frigate, a long barge, and what might have once been a schooner are all ablaze. Further out, a three-masted caravel seems to have escaped the fire, for now. A shiny slick on the surface of the water itself burns as well, creating a wall of wood and flame. The heat rises in searing sheets, and the roar of the flaming maelstrom mixed with the crashing surf masks any other sounds that might be issuing up from below. Through periodic gaps in the smoke, however, movement on the beach is visible something still lives in the inferno below.
