GM Aram Zey's Reign of Winter for PFS part 1 (Inactive)

Master of Spells Aram Zey has heard of a noblewoman who has gone missing near the Taldan village of Heldren. Kidnapped by bandits, is the rumour. Whilst a rather minor noblewoman in her own right, her disappearance coincides with the appearance of a curious pocket of winter reminiscent of the eternal frost that covers the land of Irrisen.

Intrigued by the opportunity to gain allies for the Pathfinder society amongst the Taldan nobility and to discover the reason for this strange phenomenon, the Master of Spells has decided to teleport a team of pathfinders to Heldren to look into the matter.

As Exiel enters the hut, the doll rises from her chair, her movements eerily fluid and jerky at the same time. She clasps her hands together, and though her face is impassive she says in a choking, tearful voice, I’m sorry, I really am, but I can’t control myself. I cannot let you leave here now. I’m sorry, I so, so, sorry.

With that, she pulls a little toy dagger from the pocket in the front of her dress.

As the first to act, the doll does not provoke AoOs as the Pathfinders are still flat-footed (especially Exiel, whose emotional state slows his reaction time).

She closes her eyes and seems to concentrate for a brief moment. None of you perceive any immediate effect as a result of her concentration, at least not until she rises to the roof of the hut 15ft above you.

Sorry, to clarify, the doll is 15ft above you, but still in the hut. The hut is at ground level, on the chicken legs, but the roof is 15ft high. The doll is levitating in the hut, near the roof.

Eldanar aims at the doll and shoots, scoring what should have been a solid hit. However, the bullet simply bounces off!

I wasnt able to move Shu on the map earlier. I was planning on having him right outside the hut, but just out of view from looking within. He was ready for the others to encounter problems. Also, we found 3 oils of magic weapon. I was thinking of taking one for Shu, but Badr might already have one. Regardless..

Shu pulls a vial of magical oil from his pouch and calls to Badr as shuffles close. "Need this?" He then pours the oil on the gunslinger's firearm.

You are near enough to the door of the hut that the snow does not obscure your aim. However, the target is very small, and your bullet just barely whizzes past the doll's face.

The doll evades your initial barrage of magic and metal as it begins to emit a harsh blue light.

The little, terrified voice begins to cry softly.

"It's so cold," she whimpers. "Please make it stop. Why is it so cold?"

The air around Exiel and Badr suddenly freezes over, chilling them to the bone!

Exiel takes 3 points of cold damage, but is otherwise fine. Badr takes 6 points of cold damage and is staggered for 1 round! (I assume you reloaded after shooting last round?) The doll pushes against the roof of the hut, moving 5ft to the East. The cold is still lingering in the air around Exiel and Badr.

As those in the hut begin making a racket of gunshots, cries of pain, and general chaos, Shu calmly readies the Infernal wand just outside the door and touches Badr with it.

"That the doll I hear in there? It saying anything useful?"

Noticing Badr shivering and turning blue right next to them, The monkey-faced turban jumps off Shu's head and scrambles a short distance away.

I'm going to sleep. If this goes on for a couple rounds, Shu will try to keep at a distance of 25-30 feet, cast True Strike, then nail the doll with an alchemist fire. If it stays in the hut he'll pop in and use his Acid Spray cantrip (+5 to hit, 1d3+1 damage).

If that's the case, there's only one thing Exiel would do under the circumstances...

I. Am. FINE!

Exiel snarls through clenched teeth as he resolutely stands his ground, despite Mu's words. He drops his shield and grips his longsword resolutely with both hands. There was no way he was going to let that thing fly out of the hut. He would leave his allies to take the doll out from the sky, but if it tried to escape, he would be there to stop it. No matter the cost. He promised the girl's spirit he would free her from the doll, and NOTHING was going to stop him from pursuing that goal with all he had.

Continue readied action. If I'm slow to post next round, Exiel will cast a CLW on himself if he falls below 8hp, but will not move from where his position. If above 8hp, will continue to hold position and ready action to smack.

Badr and Exiel boldly stand their ground against the magical blast of cold, determined to bring down the magical doll. Mu comes up behind them, his hands flinging shuriken at the doll with remarkable speed. However, the doll's tiny frame proves a difficult target, and both shuriken miss their mark.

The only mage left who hasn't gone this turn is Guilford, and he has magic weapon prepared, based on his profile/character sheet. But the square you are now in is suffused with cold. Are you still sure you want to stand there?

From where he is, he can fire on the doll without penalty and Guilford can reach him, but he is also in an area that is far colder than even the winter-covered forest. But feel free to re-move your character.

The girl's voice fades away, to be replaced by a sweet, cheerful, and altogether unfamiliar voice.

Hey mister...you're awfully nice! You wouldn't let those bad men hurt me, will you? the unfamiliar voice calls out in a creepily sultry tone as the doll fixes her mismatched eyes on Exiel.

Exiel's will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Fortunately, Exiel's determination to save the girl is strong, and he shakes his head clear before the enchantment can take hold.

Seconds later, the girl's voice returns, crying out desperately.

No! That wasn't me! It was her! That was her voice! You mustn't listen to her!

Meanwhile the biting cold continues to nip at Exiel and Badr...

"Guilford! GUILFORD! Can you still do that thing where you make a person bigger? Use it on me! I'm bringing that thing down!"

Exiel has the scion of humanity alternate racial feature. He can be affected by spells that affect humans/humanoids. Meaning he can be enlarged! And threaten every last square within that hut!

Exiel continues to ready his action, waiting for the doll to come into range, either from magically being enlarged, or the doll flying into range.

Eldanár moves into the next best shooting position and attempts to plant a bullet into that dolls brain.

Hearing Exiel shouting for help, Guilford makes haste to reach the hut.

"Exiel, I'm on my way, but I will need a little extra time to make it through this snow!"

Using a double move to get as close as I can. I'm guessing the square with the corner of the hut is unusable. If I enlarge Exiel, it looks like he will occupy the whole hut. Do I need to be in Badr's square to enlarge him and still have room for myself?

Eldanar and Badr attempt to shoot at the doll, but once again its tiny frame proves difficult to draw a bead on. Meanwhile, Exiel continues to stand at the door, determined not to let the doll leave the hut without him at least taking a swipe.

Guilford: You can occupy the square directly south of Exiel without trouble and reach him from there. It'll be abit cosy, but you'll fit with no penalties.

I'm not sure doing this will help, but Shu's going to plug his ears and attempt Spellcraft to determine if doing so would defeat what might be language-dependent magic.

Badr lines up a shot with his gun, then groans in dismay as the only response to his trigger is a dull click. He quickly works to clear the jam, but loses precious moments doing so.

Meanwhile, Shu finally manages to penetrate the doll's defences as he concentrates, focuses and releases a well-aimed shot of acid that burn's through the doll's dress and leaves a deep notch in her leg. In his excitement at being the first to affect the doll, he briefly considers the possibility that stopping his ears might prevent the doll from enchanting him...but a quick bonk on the head from Pu makes him realise that he is being silly - the spell Charm Person does not work that way.

Meanwhile, Guilford finally reaches Exiel and begins chanting. As he completes the spell, Exiel suddenly swells to twice his normal size...as does the sword in his hands! With a great cry, he swings the sword at the little doll, determined to free the tortured soul trapped within.

The paladin has waited quite awhile for this chance, and now that it comes, he does not let it pass easily! With a furious bellow, he smashes the sword into the doll, carving through its defences and leaving a deep gash in the doll's wooden chest.

Instead of screaming in pain, however, the girl's voice seems to perk up a little.

You...you're doing it! YOU'RE DOING IT!

Her voice is still tremulous, but for the first time since you encountered her apparition, you detect...hope.

As she calls out, the doll suddenly drops down towards down towards Exiel's head, provoking an attack of opportunity as she passes...

damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 3) + 7 = 11

Exiel hacks off one of the doll's legs (and possibly some of its hip) as it speeds towards his face, but the doll keeps coming...

doll's attack roll: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
damage: 1d2 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) - 1 + (3) = 3

...but Exiel has not taken his eyes off the doll for an instant, and with a quick sidestep dodges the attack.
