GM Aram Zey's Reign of Winter for PFS part 1 (Inactive)

Game Master SwampTing

Master of Spells Aram Zey has heard of a noblewoman who has gone missing near the Taldan village of Heldren. Kidnapped by bandits, is the rumour. Whilst a rather minor noblewoman in her own right, her disappearance coincides with the appearance of a curious pocket of winter reminiscent of the eternal frost that covers the land of Irrisen.

Intrigued by the opportunity to gain allies for the Pathfinder society amongst the Taldan nobility and to discover the reason for this strange phenomenon, the Master of Spells has decided to teleport a team of pathfinders to Heldren to look into the matter.

Old Shu: Your assailants simply laugh at you.

Badr readies an action, Shu decides to talk. Per his modus operandi last post, Mu will hang near Shu to defend him.

Eldanar will reload and move forward to get a better shot.

The attackers each fire another shot at Exiel.

attack roll: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 2 - 4 = 14
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

attack roll: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 2 - 4 = 0
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Neither hit, and, frustrated by the snow messing up their aim, they draw shortswords and close in on Exiel.

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Oh and I just noticed...one of them is just within point black shot range for Badr...so his readied action triggers.

attack roll: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 14
damage: 1d12 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

Badr gets him in the head, and he goes down. =)

The last of your attackers barely has time to register the death of his friend before Exiel steps up and cuts him open with a diagonal slash. He drops to the ground.

Considering how afraid you guys were of the pixies earlier, you guys rolled the last 2 fights!

A quick search of the fallen yields:

3 padded armors
3 buckler
3 short swords
3 shortbow
60 arrows
24 gp, 15 sp

-------------------------------------------------------------------

As the adrenaline of the (rather easy) battle drains from your veins, some of you start to shiver...you realise that you've been in the cold for quite some time now, and it may or may not be getting to some of you...

Fort saves:
Exiel: is annoying
Badr: 1d20 + 4 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 7 = 26
Shu: 1d20 + 2 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 5 = 20
Mu: 1d20 + 4 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 7 = 27
Eldanar: 1d20 + 5 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 7 = 26
Guilford: 1d20 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 5 = 9

Most of you seem to be weathering the cold rather well. However, you hear sneezing behind you as Guilford's teeth start chattering...

Guildford has contracted hypothermia (counts as fatigue), and takes:
1d6 ⇒ 1 points of non-lethal damage.

Grand Lodge

Feel free to declare healing and cross of wand charges/spells as we go

With nothing else to do in the white-desert, you press on, following the tracks up the slope. After climbing what must have been at least a hundred feet into the hills, the snowy trail finally levels off.

In a clearing among the trees, a large wooden lodge overlooks a ravine spanned by a long rope bridge. Smoke rises from the lodge's two snow-covered chimneys, and a large wood pile is stacked against the outer wall.

A small outbuilding stands east of the lodge, and a stone well nearly blanketed by snow is barely recognisable to the north. Several tracks lead southwest toward a detached stable...

Perception checks
Exiel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Badr: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Mu: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Ted: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 (Scent)
Pu: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

from which Eldanar catches a strong whiff of horse-stabling, and barely catches the sound of a very equine snort. It is likely that the horse (and at least some of the other) tracks have been leading to this very place.

Grand Lodge

There is something to be said about having a keen-eyed trapfinder taking-point in an adventuring group. Of course, some groups prefer to simply ask "who's got the most hit points?" or "who's the dumbest of our bunch?". I leave it to you to decide which Exiel is as he trudges right over a tripwire hidden in the snow. You hear a twang as a crossbow bolt flies out of a nearby tree...

attack roll: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

and tears a nasty gash in his arm. Now it would probably have been fine if that was the worst of it. However, the crossbow that fired the bolt also falls out of the tree it was in...dragging with it a rope with several pots and pans tied along it...and raising a bloody din as they clatter to the floor. Several members of the party attempt to suppress winces. The rest don't bother. Either way, you get the sinking feeling that whoever or whatever is in there, they now know they have visitors.

How do you wish to approach?

I'm happy to use my CLWs, but I'm not sure about using a spell to heal 2 non-lethal damage. I'll just take point and draw fire. Ideally Gil should not be in a situation where the fatigue even bothers him, and if he does, the same spell would heal both the fatigue/NLD and some of the damage he takes anyway.

If one of our mages has an illusion spell of some sort, maybe we could... Exiel begins, then sees Badr charging right in.

Heh sorry to throw you guys into battle again so soon after the last battle, but with the alarm raised and Badr and Exiel charging in, this has gone from room-by-room clearing with some potential for stealth, to full-on frontal assault. The good news is that the inhabitants will take some time to get ready. Oh and once inside, you no longer suffer the -4 penalty to hit at range or the movespeed penalty. But neither do the enemies.

Well, since the general notion seems to be to move in, I've moved everyone closer to the lodge.

Exiel and Badr can clearly see a man at the nearest window. He has a tankard in his hand, and upon seeing Badr and Exiel closing in with the rest of you close behind (except Eldanar, who is taking the time to mount his dog, but will likely be following close behind shortly), he propels from his mouth a spray of light-brown fluid onto the window and you barely hear him shout

We've got company! Wake the others! Tell Rohkar!

Eldanar:: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Enemies:: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

The earlier trap gave the people in the lodge ample warning of your approach, and they are quick to act. The man at the window pushes it open and raises a shortbow, taking aim at Exiel.

attack roll: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 2 - 4 = 7
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4

And doesn't even get close to hitting him.

Meanwhile, the sound of pounding footsteps comes from behind the door. You reckon Badr is right. Reinforcements are being roused, and if you don't hurry, you may find yourself swarmed by all the forces in the lodge all at once!

Basically, it's a new combat round. You are where you are on the map, having rushed forward after Badr and Exiel in the hopes that momentum and speed will make up for the lost element of surprise. Enemies have taken their actions, though you see only one at the moment.
Everyone declare your actions!

I am not (normally) a 'charge in and kill everything' guy and I KNOW there is a place for talking. I blew up the stag when Gil shouted out a warning. In this case, there was a lethal level trap set up and alarm, a guy started shouting out warnings and shot first and the house is BIG enough to have a lot of people. In a fight its about gaining the initiative and putting a potential enemy on the back foot - talking while they get ready for us in a fortified position cannot end well for us... hence the charge and then the decision later to shoot

Beyond two hallways leading past either side of the fireplace, you see several deer and elk heads mounted on the walls.
