GM Aram Zey's Reign of Winter for PFS part 1 (Inactive)

Game Master SwampTing

Master of Spells Aram Zey has heard of a noblewoman who has gone missing near the Taldan village of Heldren. Kidnapped by bandits, is the rumour. Whilst a rather minor noblewoman in her own right, her disappearance coincides with the appearance of a curious pocket of winter reminiscent of the eternal frost that covers the land of Irrisen.

Intrigued by the opportunity to gain allies for the Pathfinder society amongst the Taldan nobility and to discover the reason for this strange phenomenon, the Master of Spells has decided to teleport a team of pathfinders to Heldren to look into the matter.

It is not in our interest to destroy this woods nor do we have a firemage amongst us. May i ask your name? I never met a speaking horned horse before. What are you? Oh look there! This moss over there looks so tasty, doesn´t it? Go ahead and help yourself!

"Bah!" Shu scoffs at his old friend Mu. "Wisdom is for those without the intelligence to know real power."

When Eldanár mentions firemages, Shu cackles. "No firemages he says? Hee! I would have you know, among certain gnomes there is talent for such." He says enigmatically.

I was being colourful in my description, based on what other skills you guys had since NONE of you had ranks in sense motive...

But basically, you reckon that the creature is hiding something whilst fishing for information, and that the voice may not actually even be the stag's, though it certainly comes from its general direction...

What? What do you take me for, a simple mindless beast? This is no time to be thinking about taking a snack!

You get the impression however that the voice is getting slightly nervous, and that the last sentence was delivered more as an admonishment than a statement... Eldanar also notes that the stag only returns its attention to you AFTER the sentence was finished.

LOL the DC to get an animal to perform a trick that it is trained in is exactly 10...and I'm going to say that all animals are trained in the 'eat' trick.

The stag begins to lower its head to the icy, mossy rock again.

What? No, stop, you...oh forget it! Just attack them and eat later!

At this goading, the stag turns to look at you. It doesn't look particularly malicious, but it does lower its horns...

Initiatives
Exiel:: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
[b]Badr:: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

[b]Eldanar:: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
[b]? and stag:: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Positions on the map are based on who was speaking most with the creature. Presumably you needed to get closer to talk (and try to handle animal).

Oooh they go first, huh.

The stag lowers its horn and jumps through the snow, swinging its horns at Eldanar!
But gets shot before it reaches!

From over to the East, a familiar projectile flies out towards Eldanar as a shrill voice screams:
[b]That's the one who killed Pym! Get him! He's dangerous! Him and the one with the cloth wrappings around his head! The other one killed Voshi! Get them first! The rest are USELESS!

attack roll: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 8 - 4 = 20
damage: 1d2 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
Eldanar's fort save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Oh is that so? The same voice that came from the stag says just as Badr's itchy trigger finger blows the stag's head off What? WHAT!? YOU DARE!!! YOU WILL SUFFER FOR THAT! A new dimunitive figure appears in front of Badr, reaching out to touch the gunslinger's still-smoking weapon.

Ok, this one is a biggie, so I will have Badr roll his own save...will save vs a CL6 Shrink Item, DC17...please roll well!

The winged annoyance who got away earlier is 35ft in the air, the new one is in Eldanar's square.

Since Badr ninja-ed me, I say he got surprise in and shot the stag as he was charging Eldanar. The stag drops before he even reaches Eldanar. THAT SAID, this will affect the new winged creature's actions...

To be fair, it's rare that a first level character is so dependant on one weapon...gunslingers are the only ones, I think, and the AP had lots of weapons for other characters...there's still a spare crossbow lying around from the earlier stash which I presume you're proficient in?

My bad! I wasn't looking carefully. I thought the damage rolls were the attack rolls. XD The 21 was a hit! (Problem with having divided attention at work. =p)

Mu's fist smacks the little creature, sending it flying from Badr's gun, though not before the damage is done. The force of the punch sends the creature well beyond the range of the second punch, however.

Guilford: since Exiel beat you in initiative, I will let you re-declare your action. Telekinetic fist is a magical effect and hence bypasses DR. Also...

As the fey creature reels from the force of Mu's punch, it looks up just in time to see Exiel grinning maniacally as he brings the cold iron longsword right through his torso. The last of the fey creatures (who has already escaped once before) shrieks in terror at the sight, and again as Shu's wooden spear whizzes past him.

Badr: your shot was a surprise round shot, you still get a full round action.
Guilford: feel free to re-declare your action, since Exiel killed his target before you even got to move
Eldanar: You get a full round action too!

Exiel: you recognise the spell that shrunk Badr's item as...the spell 'shrink item', oddly enough. You realise that the spell can actually be terminated by throwing the object onto a solid surface.

Is fey#1 dead?

Grand Lodge

Before the combat started, Badr got a sucker-punch..I mean sucker-shot in, killing the stag.

The fey went first, and then you and Exiel chewed up the fey who shrunk Badr's weapon. Shu fired a spear into the air.

Guilford declared a spell on Exiel, but I'm letting him re-declare because technically Exiel should have gone first, and his action might have caused Guilford to take a different action.

Badr still has an action, as does Eldanar.

The fey creature flies off into the distance, well and truly terrified of you guys by this point...

A search of the area reveals nothing of interest, so Exiel and Badr retrieve their weapons, and you press on after the horse tracks along the trail yet again.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eventually, you come to a small stream that has completely frozen over. A human-sized snowman stands in the middle of the trail before the frozen stream, and a crude wooden sign leans against it and bears the words "Trespassers Turn Back" written in common. Behind it, a solid sheet of ice extends across the frozen stream, while snow-covered rocks line its banks.

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

As you focus your divination magic on the snowman, you detect the presence of magic. There are 2 auras, one faint lingering aura near the head of the snowman, and one faint persisting aura at the base of the snowman.

Knowledge arcana to identify head aura: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Knowledge arcana to identify base aura: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

You are able to tell that the lingering, fading aura near the head is the remnants of a recently discharged illusion spell. You have absolutely no idea what type of magic is affecting the base of the snowman.

... Of course I would identify the useless aura... I can even guess what spell that was...

I can't retry failed knowledge checks, can I?

Anyone else have detect magic and knowledge arcana?

How far does the aura extend from the Snowman?

Also, is there anything large-ish around the area that I can throw at the snowman to disturb the aura?

1. Nope, you either know something or you don't.

2. Guilford does. To speed things along, I assume he casts detect magic and attempts to identify the aura.

knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Guilford identifies that the aura coming from the base of the snowman is evocation-based.

3. The aura only extends to a 5ft radius around the snowman.

4. There are some rocks by the river of various sizes.
