This is where we get to have many of our out of character discussions. Please feel free to email/chat with me and each other directly as well if it's a more private matter for your character. I'm available.
Don't forget to check the campaign info tab. I will be updating it with current information from time to time. If there's something you'd like to see regularly posted there, let me know.
As I mentioned in the recruitment thread, if you would like to discuss your combat and other roles here before we get too far along, feel free - but it is not required. I want your characters to learn about each other over time and through role play whenever possible.
Dimitrio Carini |
Hey all,
Very glad to be here.:)
Dimitrio is currently built as a TWF unchained rogue.
However, I could very easily turn him into a bard (arcane duelist). He would lose some combat abilities but gain versatility.
What is everyone else's PC and what do we 'need'?
BTW, the change in build will only slightly affect how I play Dimitrio but no major changes are expected.
Let me know your thoughts.
Ederin Valenta |
Dotting in. Hello all, looking forward to getting to know you and your PC's over the next however-long-this-takes.
Ederin is currently built as a Ranger with the Guide archetype. My current intentions are to have him as a ranged damage dealer. Without losing much in the way of flavor he could be reworked into a Fighter, Hunter or Brawler if we need it.
Dimitrio, I've always been biased towards rogues so that's where I would lean if it came down to it (not to say I don't appreciate a handy Bard though).
GM_Euan |
Also, please finalize your characters icons. We'll be using them on the maps as well as in thread, so if you want to change them, now's your chance. :)

Zeroly, the barkeep formerly known as Jallena is now Kaylayne. Was still tinkering with character at the time I needed to post in the recruitment thread.
Firstly, welcome Dimitrio. Welcome all. I'm excited for this game as GM Euan's last AP is one of the best ever run on these boards. We had tons of fun then, and I expect good stuff here.
Secondly, I really hope that everyone plays what they want. I would prefer not to know what class you are playing. Balance is a myth...not only is it a myth, it's actually a detriment to good roleplay. Play what makes you happy. Play the mechanics that excite you and what you want to play. Play it with joy and play it well.
I say that because I am *much* more concerned with your character, your backstory, your history, your future. You may or may not ever know that class I'm playing. You'll know me as the barkeep, probably, for a long time until my character develops into something more. You'll know that I can do some things and I'm less good at other stuff. However, know me as Kaylayne.
Garridan Brewmaster |
My lips are sealed about my class, if I do feel the need to talk about it I'll hide the info in a spoiler (although my intention is to play what I want and keep it to myself). I will PM Euan if decide to make any changes. I will probably be making some changes to my backstory later today (more details/ motivations)
I'm fine with my icon, don't see any need to change it.
Also, I will be on the road for the next 5 hours or so and incommunicado. My hotel should have WiFi so no problems keeping in touch. Tomorrow and Friday I am expected to do some work but will be available in the evening and really early mornings for you west coasters.
On a personal note I am in my mid-forties married, have 2 boys ages 12 & 8, and live in Indiana (United States) which is on eastern time (GMT-5 I think). I look forward to playing with you all.
Dimitrio Carini |
What's with all the secrecy regarding classes? :)
We are all adults that can separate player knowledge from character knowledge and avoid meta-gaming, right?
I get the part about playing what you want. And we as a party will have to deal with whatever shortcomings we have. So all good there.
I do see Dimitrio as more of a performer with roguish tendencies. He was sort of 'born' into a 'band of Varisian rogues', but his real passion is not there. However, he is not above conning people to get what he wants.
And since we are not worried about party balance and such, I'll rebuild him as a bard (arcane duelist). I should have that done later tonight.
Game on!

Well met, gentle souls. Both Kaylayne and I have had the honor of gaming under the auspices of GM_Euan, back then DM_Euan, and I am thrilled to return to the table with fresh blood. For his consideration, I'm sure that you'll come to enjoy the depth of roleplay that he facilitates.
Dimitrio, in answer to your query about secrecy, I'd say that keeping the character builds on the quiet side helps encourage more roleplaying opportunities. Helps you see the character better, without pigeonholing each other too quickly.
I still enjoy chatting up others about what I might take at a new level, and one of my more enjoyable characters emerged when I asked what role I could fill in stepping into another campaign when a player left. That aside, the character classes are there to fill in the underlying mechanics, which, in turn, engage with the mechanics of the AP. I'd much rather hear a player talk about wanting to try her hand at a character who is strong physically, early for his age, but weak of will and constantly struggling to say 'no' to others, over a player who wants to try out a bloodrager because what that class can do sounds cool.
As for avatars, I'm chuckling, because Garridan's avatar and Dimitrio's avatar represent two player characters from DM_Euan's original campaign. Since we're in the same universe as it were, it's amusing to think there are twins for not one, but two folk from Korvosa :)

I'm good either way, to be clear ;)
Game on, indeed!

Also, one of you lucky chaps gets to track the treasure on the treasure sheet (link).
Who is it going to be? I'm fine if it changes over time, but I want someone 'on the hook' for it at any given time so we don't fall behind with our paperwork. I may aid at times, but I need one of you to actually be in charge.
Ederin Valenta |
I've decided to leave this here. It's a spreadsheet containing the slang from both the players companion and anything I came up with during the recruitment play that I intend to use again.
I've always had a fondness for clever or strange use of words, and while I don't intend for Ederin's language to get as esoteric as cockney rhyme, I do intend to explore his penchant for broad, and sometimes erroneous, word association to the fullest.
This list will definitely grow as we continue to play, so on the chance that the context is ever unclear and I'm not available for clarification, I thought this could be helpful.
I've also left it editable. I don't know how much interest there is, but I thought it would be a fun idea to receive suggestions from the rest of you on any slang terms. Obviously anything I didn't feel fit Ederin wouldn't be used, so if you feel it's too intrusive I wouldn't be concerned. We have a group here that seems fond of writing and word play so I'd love to be able to collaborate if anyone is so inclined.
Since I'm already discussing spreadsheets, I'll offer to run the loot sheet. I'll admit I've looked at it and I'm not 100% sure on it's optimal use, but I'm willing to learn.

I'm unable to take this on right now, but would be happy to take it on in a future book.

I like this and will add to it. Might it be incorporated into the treasure sheet, above?
GM_Euan |
I've added the slang to the campaign tab so the link is easier to find. If you really want it in the header, I'm happy to do that too. If you want to add it as a tab to the treasure sheet - also fine.
Ederin, I've given you authority to edit the treasure sheet. For the most part, you won't be editing the second tab - most of that information comes over automatically or I'll be handling it.
You'll just add items as they're found to the first tab. I'll do the first few so you can see how it works. Feel free to add your slang to the treasure sheet as a third tab. Very cool!!

Sorry, I meant to respond to this yesterday. Indiana, eh? Where? Who are your VOs? Please tell me it's Evansville with Jeremy C.
Also, I too am married. No kids (and not in the plans). Live in SF (in 'Murica). I enjoy chit chatting over instant messager (I get most major platforms). It's good times to talk along the side. Hit me up at painlordpfs (at) gmail. I'm usually on in the mornings (PST) and evenings. It's one of the things I really like about PbP...making friends online.

When you get a chance, please visit the map and play with your icons.
I think I've got you each setup to move the right icon, but if I've crossed some wires let me know. :) Also let me know if you have any confusion about this mapping software.
This is the first time I'm using it as a GM, so it may be a little rough at times, but we'll manage. I've used it as a player in a few campaigns now so I'm comfortable with it at least that far.
The map is, as you may imagine, of the Gold Goblin. You're not there quite yet (well most of you anyway) so don't worry about the icons on the map just yet. I'll describe those in due course.
Oh, and on the personal side, I too am married but no kids, and as you may already know, I'm in the East Bay, CA area.
Dimitrio Carini |
I can move my icon. :)
Personal side, married, two daughters, 1 dog, and two cats and they pay me for working as an environmental engineer in South Carolina.
Ederin Valenta |
Unmarried and no children yet, so it seems that I'm the odd man out so to speak. Though I'm likely to join both of those clubs before much longer.
I do have three cats that keep me in constant in need of a lint roll in the meantime.
I'm on the east coast myself, having lived in New York my entire life.
Edit: I can also move my icon.

OK, I'm done with the money issue.
Question 1: will you GM write the results of our attacks or should we take an educated guess?
Question 2: How do you guys get two lines under your name?

Race and Class/Level text boxes both show up on posts.

Just a heads up about my weekend schedule:
I work a 12 hour shift Saturday evenings and down time is highly subject to the amount of work needed to do.
I take a regular break between 11pm - 12 am EST, and am usually up for an hour or so when I get home around 6am EST but after that I'm usually unavailable until Sunday afternoon (because sleep) and then back to work a few hours after that, so those are likely to be my most consistent posting times.
I don't think this will limit my ability to maintain my current posting habits, but it does mean that on weekends I'll be less likely to have a chance edit my posts, and will be restricted to posting from mobile.
So if any clarification needs to be made, particularly any cross over due to initiative order, feel free to contact me via g-chat as that is significantly less cumbersome/more reliable to navigate on the fly while working.
Lastly, this is mostly for DM Euan, Roll20 is notoriously unreliable on my phone, so during this time frame I may request that you adjust my piece on the map if that's alright.
All that being said, I'm off to work, will check in when I can.
GM_Euan |
Dimitrio, I will post the results of your actions every round at the top of my posts. Sometimes I'll interject if something key has occurred that might effect the actions of others (like the death of one of my key NPCs).
That said, if it's obvious, feel free to make a comment or two in your post, but be careful. It's not always obvious. :) Generally it's a good idea to be somewhat conservative with your descriptions of others.
Thanks for the heads up Ederin. Post when you can - no pressure.
If any of you ever need me to move your character, you can either ping me in chat, or spoiler it in your post. Be as clear as you can naturally so I don't put you in the wrong spot.
Dimitrio Carini |
You'll have to excuse Dimitrio's exaggerated self-worth. :)
BTW, I still can't get 'two lines' under my name. I used 'race' and 'class/levels' but they appear on the same line.
Help?
Ederin Valenta |
Hey Garridan, can you let me know if/when you record the gold I returned to you on your character sheet? I won't subtract it from mine yet until I know it won't be lost in limbo.
GM_Euan |
Ederin, take a look at the treasure sheet (link). You can see where I've added the stuff you've found so far, in as much detail as you know.
The gold you collected is bolded because that's it's the actual cash value, the rest is not bolded as it's only worth half when you sell it. When you decide to sell something (like the assorted weapons maybe), you would put the 'To Sell' moniker there, reduce the value to half, and bold it so you know that's the actual cash value. More on that process later.
The only really tricky thing is the left column. Those are links to the post where you found the goods. VERY helpful if something goes unidentified for some time and the GM can't remember what it is. :)
The format for a hyperlink is this:
=hyperlink("LINK", POST NUMBER)
Make sense so far?
As you learn what things are, go ahead and note it in the sheet and put the values in the 'Value' column. Let me know if you have trouble, but it should be easy.
Garridan Brewmaster |
Just a heads up my post rate will be a little slow the next two days due to an unforeseen death. (I will not be able to post today until 8pm PST, tomorrow should be the same early morning and evening posting) Please feel free to bot me. Thanks for your understanding in this matter.
GM_Euan |
Yeah, sorry to hear it Garridan.
I'll cover you - just do what you can when you can and don't worry about it. Thanks for the heads up.
Ederin Valenta |
Sorry to hear Garridan, take what time you need.
GM_Euan |
Everyone please level up to two. You can see how to post your leveling by looking at Lief’s upcoming post.
In short, I want to see what’s changing so I can kinda keep up with what you can do. You should put it in a spoiler so folks who don’t want to know don’t see it. Naturally, I expect you to update your character sheets as well so I can look there when I forget stuff. :)
Oh, and don’t forget your various profession, perform, and diplomacy skills when you level up. You’ll be rolling those to assist the Gold Goblin getting back on its feet.
Finally, don't forget to update your headers with your new level's abilities.

I do synopsis every time you level up. They’re just short overviews of what has happened in the last little while. Mostly they’re references for me so I can keep track of a few things, but I’ve had players appreciate them as well. Normally they’ll be much longer, but I do not like first level and advance my players to second quickly.
1 Calistril, 4709 AR
The party first assembles in a nearby pub, the Drunken Lurch. Over early drinks, they get to know each other a little.
They are approached, indirectly, by a stranger, apparently a spell caster, who provides them with a note, a little cash, and odd second level cure light wounds potions.
This stranger apparently wants them to stop a raid tonight on the ‘Golden’ Goblin.
The party goes to the grand opening of the Gold Goblin and has a little fun, and (mostly) some success before the raid begins.
The raid does not go smoothly, as the party is instrumental in foiling what would otherwise have been a lucrative endeavor.
Thanked by Saul, the party meets with him where upon he offers them jobs - a sort of very junior partnership - in the hopes that the party can bring new life into the struggling to begin gambling house.
The party meets Larur and makes plans for the future, rounding out the evening.

Very much appreciated, thank you.
BTW, I hate 2nd level as well. I have my PCs just start out at 2nd level although my 'sweet spot' is 4th to 9th level. High enough to make a difference but not 'uber heroes' (high level combat takes forever to run :().

Few housekeeping notes since we're all playing out a longer period of time at the moment.
1: We still have Saul's chest. Last time it was brought up it was still in Kaylayne's possession, but I've left it as party loot as I'm sure Kay wouldn't run off with it...right?
2: Now would probably be a good time to claim loot, or sell any loot we don't want. Until then it's all listed as party loot and inflating our group worth, so check it out and lay claim!
This is mostly for the GM, but those of you who have played with him before feel free to contribute. What is the protocol for loot that has been used up (like the potions that Lief and Dimitrio received, and promptly drank, from Saul)?
Similarly, once something is sold, or cash has been divvied in game, what is standard procedure for the spread sheet?

Good points!
1) Uh...Kaylayne hands the dishrag she's been hauling around to clean mugs and bartops with back to Saul. "Sorry!" She totally didn't know she still had that.
2) Kay claims nothing, is happy to sell everything save the healing stuff.
3) Would just use strikethrough to show that it's gone and used, and eliminate the value from that column.
