Deadlands: Hell on Earth Reloaded

Game Master Famulimus

An open-world Hell on Earth campaign set in southwest Oregon.

Just going ahead and starting a discussion thread for us. This is the place for out of character talk, if needed. You can also use it to test out formatting and dice rolling.

Testing. One, two. Checking the mic.

HOW TO MAKE WITH THE POSTING
Note that I'm using the conventions Brandon, Mark, and all them are using. I don't know if these are standard PbP things, or if they have their own methods, but it's all I know so it's what we're using.

Dialogue: "Bold and use quotation marks."
Thinking/inner dialogue: Use italics.
Out of character comments or questions: Use ooc.
Secret messages:

Spoiler text!:
Use spoiler text for messages to the GM, or to other players if the context is appropriate. If the spoiler text does not have your name on it, DO NOT READ IT.

I'll go over how to roll dice and all that in another post.

Example post:

Approaching the wreckage, Leviticus slows the Caddy Fat Cat to a crawl, taking a moment to survey the surrounding landscape. Looks like an ambush. A wise man would keep on movin'. But I don't recall ever being called wise.

Easing the car into park, Leviticus grabs his shotgun and crowbar before stepping out. He pauses again, expecting bullets to spatter off the hood of his sweet, sweet ride at any moment, but all is silent. He moves toward the wrecked car, which is lying tilted on its roof. He awkwardly crouches down, stifling a twinge at a shooting pain in his bad leg, and looks inside. Hanging from his seatbelt is a young man, his head smeared with blood.

"Hey, buddy," he says, "you alright in there?"

If the guy doesn't respond, I'm going to give the car a once over, looking for traps or anything, and if I don't find anything I'm going to get down to looting.

It makes me happy that Leviticus is being used for your example.

ROLLING DICE
For the most part, dice rolling follows the format laid out in Paizo's helpful text formatting guidelines. Dice rolls can be simple:

Shooting: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Or complex:

Fighting & Wild Die, Joker Bonus: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 51d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

The only tricky part is handling Savage Worlds' exploding dice mechanic. This requires you to hit Preview before submitting, which I imagine most of you will do most of the time anyway. Previewing will give you your dice results, which will not change no matter how many times you hit preview. Once the dice are rolled, they stay rolled. If you see that you've gotten an Ace, then just add a line like "Notice Ace" or whatever, and roll the die again, then just give the final result.

I hope that makes sense. The process is a little wonky, but once you've done it a couple times it becomes easier.

When you're rolling, it's usually a good idea to include a little bit of OOC explanation for what you're doing. Sometimes, if the context is clear you could skip it, but often you'll want to make sure I know what the f@!@ you're doing. Instead of just approaching the wreckage and rolling Notice, you might include something like, "I'll search the car for anything useful, as well as any signs of what caused the wreck."

Oh, and feel free to play around in this thread with the dice if you want to get comfortable with it.

Justin, behold your Veteran draw:

Eight (Cyclopean): One of the abominations the hero encountered caught him across one side of his face. He has the One Eye Hindrance.

That's a sexy veteran draw. I'll need to find a good eyepatch image to use.

dice test: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -11d6 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3

Here I am to save the day. I need to get on making my character, which will probably be tonight or tomorrow.

shooting: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8. Notice Ace shooting: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Toughness: 5 (1 Armor on all but Head), Parry 5

My Paizo sk1llz are lacking. How do I upload a character/create a character sheet?

Alright, I'll be starting this thing up shortly. First, I need each of you to provide reasons why you were recruited for this mission by Junkyard (except Mick, who already covered it). Once I get that, we can start.

Trivia volunteered for the mission for two reasons (neither of which are motivated by monetary gain):

1.) She has only been awake for a few months and in that time she has already come to realize the importance of Junkyard. She knows that establishing another foothold for Junkyard could be the key to recovery for what's left of the world.

2.) She is also worried that Circe is behind what is happening in Portland. Even if Circe is not directly connected, taking out the shogun would keep Circe from gaining a potentially powerful ally.

Testing:

Witchcraft: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Wild die: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Notice Ace:
Witchcraft: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Notice Ace:
Witchcraft: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Total: 19

Thus I burn my one good roll of the campaign.

Lucas was injured pretty badly after the battle of Junkyard. He had to stay in a triage facility for weeks while he recovered. During that time Lucas spent a lot of time monitoring the comings and goings of criminals and law dogs via the Robocop tech spirit.

During his recovery, the tech spirit took notice of Lucas' drive and desire to bring justice to the wastes. At first it would give him bits of info it wouldn't forward to the average law dog/junker populace. As the weeks went on and Lucas proved his worth, the information became more juicy. The spirit started tipping Lucas off about supernatural evil to hunt.

Finally, the spirit had a favor of its own to ask. There is a facility, still mostly in tact, near Portland. This facility has a satellite array that could be used (and powered) by the spirit to truly connect the law dogs of the wastes. It wants Lucas to volunteer for councilman Wade's mission to Corvalis, and to restore the array back to working order.

All good, Justin. As long as you're not going to beeline for Portland.

M Human

Sorry that I've been AWOL. I'm starting to get a little concerned about these headaches I've been getting. Past couple o' days I've either be laid out with a headache or catching up on my online classes.

Tests:
rolling - Killing Justin: 1d8 ⇒ 71d6 ⇒ 2

Hopefully, I'll have amazing rolls on here since y'all seem to be sucking, and maybe balance some karmic scale for my rolls everywhere else.

Character background for going to hipster central:

Similar to Trivia, Xander hasn't been awake all that long. His rude awakening, however, came at the hands of those with a broken moral compass. They used and abused his cache of goodies, which is also an accurate description of their treatment of him. This went on for about a month or so until a fella by the name of Lucas brought his slavers to something resembling justice.

Since that time he's been a near constant companion to Lucas. Their goals, while not the same, are similarly aligned, and upon hearing Dovac's plan Xander became excited for the first time since waking. He's now truly embarking on something akin to his purpose.

How do bennies work? 3 per session is the rules, the same here? Where do sessions break?

toughness 5/6body/7head, parry 5

Question time!

Jess, A: do we know your character is a witch

And B: do you talk about circe or manual to us? Or have you mentioned those figures to us?

Bennies: Yes, you currently have 3. Sorry about that, should have mentioned it.

Session breaks: Honestly, don't know yet. Gonna have to wing it for now. Which means I'm not yet sure when/how I'll be handing out XP. Still new to this whole PbP thing, but I figure we've got some time before it becomes an issue.

Yep, you all know that she is a witch or at least some sort of magic caster type. She doesn't hide it.

And she probably mutters about Circe and Manual, so at the very least you all have heard that. If you asked her about Manual, she might actually have a hard time articulating that Manual is the program that taught her all about the world prior to the bombs dropping. She would probably end up saying Manual was her teacher.

As for Circe, that may be a little more grey. Because Circe is sort of the source of Trivia's delusions, you may just think she only exists in Trivia's head. Right now, there is no hard evidence Trivia can provide that Circe even exists, especially since she gets a bit agitated when the name is brought up and might starting muttering about Circe having Trivia's face, but isn't Trivia.
