My instructor was actually Hawkins Cheung, who used to go out to bars with Bruce Lee and get in bar fights. I caused a little bit of a stir when I joined his studio because I was born on the day that Bruce Lee died (July 20, 1973).

I think there is really only one word right now for this thread.

Wow!

If I tried to do that stuff now...I have a feeling it would sound something. "Ooohhh potato san, you are perhaps not cut out for dis. Perhaps you should look elsewhere in life so you do not end up like french fries on floor at McDonald's"

(Forgive me, that was entirely meant to entertain and not offend anyone)

i'm rather potato esque myself. Luckily Wing Chun is a soft style from what I remember. And Very cool GM

Eh, I am in a way potato esque but it's mostly due to the half paralyzed leg from my time in the military. I've managed to keep my figure from getting out of hand, just....more couch time then I'd like.

This is probably the biigest recruitment thread from level 1 I have seen! I have been away from PbP for about 18 months, so maybe this is the norm?

But I like to think that it has exploded because of the applicants, GM and atmosphere. So just imagine what the actual game will be like!!

Indeed, lots of great applications. I love the attention to detail of the GM, and the effort to make characters that are invested in the campaign from day 1, with fitting backgrounds and clear goals. Would really love to play in this one. Fingers crossed!

HAHAHAHA! Largest I've seen was a Wrath of the Righteous. It clocks in at over 20 pages.

I've been in a couple that hit 10, and a few that barely hit page 2. It really depends. KM does draw a crowd. I've already wished everyone Luck! but I'll continue! There are... more than a few tough choices here, and while I'm human, I fill a common role, and have a slightly oddball class. We'll see, and sadly 30~35 will be disappointed. :-/

I'm afraid I'm not comfortable enough with PbP to run a game yet, and when I DO dive in, it would NOT be an AP to start, maybe a PFS game, or a short-mid length module, and at the rate I'm going, that'll be when this game Finishes book 6! (Yes, This game will FINISH! I can feel it!)

I'm so confused right now. 309 posts in a recruitment thread after just a week? Is recruitment still open on this? I've long wanted to play a kingmaker campaign if it is.

Sorry, closed on Weds. and will be announcing choices on Friday.

Recruitment should be closed now, unless you had posted before Wednesday. The DM said so (page 6):

DM Jesse Heinig wrote:
If you post a character after this post and you hadn't already posted your intent earlier in the thread, you'll have to wait for the next recruitment thread to come around, sorry.

EDIT: DM you beated me for a few seconds!

Page six of this novel that is recruitment. A novel that will statistically end in disappointment for the the 30 or so not chosen. But hopefully some benevolent soul will give the downtrodden a second chance. As people have mentioned, there are a lot of interesting characters. Will be a shame not to see them get a chance.

In any case, if it is still open, I'd be interested in playing a Human Magus (Eldritch Scion/Kapenia Dancer). CHA based persuasion focused lady from a disgraced Varisian family, either fled the gulf or was sent away to Kaer Maga, then travelled east with a caravan.

EDIT: Doh.. nevermind.. :(

I am feeling very nervous about this. Hopefully Kerri is interesting enough to make the cut. Good luck again everyone.

The suspense is murdering me!!

You to? killing us all i think

I'd rather those 30 or so be disappointed than the Gm take on more than s/he can handle. After our wrath of righteous reccruitment closed the original GM vanished only for another to swing in and take everybody still interested and opened up multiple tables, he seems to have lost interest and posts once every few days.

After some review, I also agree that many people have taken a great deal of care developing a worthy character.

Good luck to everyone!

Illya-Nym wrote:

I'm fine with that. It culls the weak! And gives me a better chance! Victory by default is still a victory!

Sorry to do this at such late notice, but I just got into a game that I hadn't expected to be accepted into. I'm gonna have to drop out. Again, really sorry to drop out so late.

@Tony, typically I have applied for so many games that I chose not to make profiles first for characters and instead wait till selection. It tends to fill you roster up rather fast. Hell even doing it this way, I have filled up a roster rather fast and had too many games peter out.

Haha, well I am dying to run Iron Gods, but my home group is lukewarm to it, maybe some of you find yourselves in Torch...

But I'm very new to PbP as a player, and am hoping to be in on this one!

the gears begin to turn...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, regardless of the outcome of this recruitment, it has certainly re-awakened my own desire to run a Kingmaker game. A couple years back I had a massive campaign planned out only to have it disrupted in the middle of the second chapter by an untimely job offer out of state. The fact that I'd have to lose the campaign was sadly outweighed by the chance of stable employment (I had the Map Pack maps with hex cut-outs mounted on corkboard and everything...)

I'd been toying with the idea of starting a Rise of the Runelords Mashup PbP around the start of the new year, but I might have to switch it to Kingmaker instead depending on how things go. Though I could only hope I'd get even half the quality of applicants ;)

WolfSpirit, I think you would have nearly all the people here that don't get selected.

For sure, Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous are the two APs that I usually see get the most responses when a recruitment thread goes up (thus far, anyway). I'm sure that if you should decide to run a Kingmaker game at any point, you'll be swimming in applicants :)

I'm sure if you wanted, I doubt very many of us that are leftover would not hesitate to jump into the standing for your recruitment if you did a closed one

I strongly encourage people to form additional groups where possible -- there are lots of great character ideas here and they should see the light of play!

I've never actually played in Rise of the Runelords, myself.

Kingmaker is such a massive undertaking as an AP that it's daunting to some. The best advice I can give is to keep your material well-organized. That's why I keep a folder in Google drive with all my sheets, character information, kingdom notes, and so on. It's easy to reference and easy to link players to it.

I've played in the first module of Iron Gods. Basically if you had fun playing Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, it's a hoot.

No problem, enjoy the game!

DM you killing me with the suspense here ^^

PROCESSING

Also there is another Kingmaker game looking for recruits over here:

Kingmaker Evil DM style

It's using 15-point buy instead of 20 point, and it's already full on front-line fighters, but it's still worth checkin' out. I see some of you already have. ;)

Well, it's 15 point-for-point, so it's closer to being between 20-25 point-buy standard. That said, please, any of you are welcome to come by my recruitment thread if/when you aren't chosen.

Iron Gods isn't for everyone.

Anyhow, back to the Stolen Lands!

"We will take back what is ours! We will carve prosperity from the fields and swamps and drive the brigands and trolls back into the shadows! We shall unite the River Kingdoms under our banner, and we will succeed where others have failed!"

Naturally, no petty bandits or trolls can stand before us

Thanks for dropping in Jon!

Ok, this was a super-tough roster to build. I've decided to do a somewhat unconventional party, but one that I hope has the skills to deal with the various challenges that the Stolen Lands will present.

Important: If you didn't get into the roster this time, it's not because I felt that there was something wrong with your character. Everyone made really solid submissions and I felt like I could imagine who your characters were and what they would be like. That's what I look for -- if there was a serious disconnect I would've told you so you could work on it. So don't feel like you didn't make it because you "did something wrong." Everyone did great work and I'm super impressed.

I've chosen my roster based on some ideas that have formed in my head on the basis of who these characters are and how their identities will create unusual, interesting hurdles to overcome in Kingmaker, as well as on the basis of what can get a team to gel into an effective group. I'm not going to go into lengthy detail about why I made the choices that I did because I don't want to start arguments or "... but my character would've done that better... " debates. :)

Please stay posted as the game develops. Often, early in the game, players may discover that it isn't going in a way that they like, or that they really can't commit the time that they thought they had, and sometimes people drop out. If that happens I will FIRST go back to the original list of applicants and start looking for a good recruit.

I have some additional notes for a few specific characters on the basis of some of my thoughts.

Without further ado, here are the five I've chosen for this particular run at the Stolen Lands.

The Chosen Five
Telmarni
Cassandra Lupin
Valeska
Korinne Bryden
Carinna del'Annerie

Oddly, this is an all-female group, so it looks like we have the Amazons of the Stolen Lands!

There are a few particulars to discuss as we finish forming up the group, but we'll handle that in the Discussion thread.

Now some additional notes:

Sahisysha the Tree-Singer: I am a sucker for serpent people, so I really like this character, but it wasn't quite what I was angling for in KM. I am, however, planning to run Serpent's Skull at some point in the future, and I think this character would be perfect for it. So, if Sahisysha doesn't wind up in a different game, I would be delighted to reserve a space for this character in that game at some future point when I start it.

Raxus Half-Blood: I really like half-ogres, but I just couldn't find a good way to fit this character with the rest of the group as it was building out -- it would've edged out having other melee characters (the character is such a beast in melee that anyone else would have a hard time keeping up). But I went through like three iterations of seeing if I could get the character to fit. If I run a different KM group at some point I'd love to take another shot at it.

Mr. Brooks: This character is so rich with the Jekyll-and-Hide motif that I desperately want to see it in a Carrion Crown game.

Kerri Corynian: You are super responsive, which is always a really really good sign. I feel like this character would rock the house in Reign of Winter, for obvious reasons.

Tony Sinclair: Confusion about name aside, you made a really compelling story. Ultimately I think this guy is gonna go places, the character was a serious contender!

Vasilyan Medvyen I really love the idea of the paladin who seems like a ranger, who uses a bow and blazes a trail through the woodlands, but I think the group dynamic that evolved wound up being one that would be super-hard for a paladin to fit with. If I did a different KM game that had a more law-and-order group dynamic I would see this character as a natural pick and a leader.

Illya-Nym: I feel kinda bad because you'd waited out the whole week with your really elaborate character. To be honest I feel like I'm not sure I could do a story that would do justice to this character's background. I hope you get a DM who can rise to the challenge for you.

Jester: I'm usually kinda iffy on slayers because -- well, let's face it, they're better than rangers or rogues and there's a small contingent of players out there who see them as the way to hyper-optimize a nonmagic combatant. But, this guy has personality. I was really torn.

Carrack Athelstan: Man I wanted to say yes to this, as I have something of a liking for psionics in general, but I just couldn't get it to 'click' with a group that I could work out in my head. :/

Coeran Medvyed: Like Vasilyan, above, this character would be perfect for a very lawful group. I like the notion of an idealist coming to bring the light of civilization to the wilderness.

There's lots more that I could write but I have to get to that Devil's Night party. Just because I didn't call you out above doesn't mean I don't love you. ;)

Darn it, well I hope that everyone enjoys the game. Thanks DM for the advice, I will have a look into the campaign.

Of course if anyone here who wasn't selected is planning to run another Kingmaker game, count my submission given in.

Disappointing but not a problem, have fun guys

The selected party is composed of a really interesting combination of really cool character concepts. I can't wait to read your adventures. I'm a player in DM Jesse's Jade Regent PbP, and I can assure you all that you are in for a fun ride with an excellent DM. Have fun!

Best Regards!

Sweet. I hope you all fair well in future recruitments.

Aw biscuits... Oh well, you win some, you lose some. And I'm glad it was to really good apps like these.

See you in the Stolen Lands!

As the DM mentioned, I am looking for two more characters! Feel free to stop by and apply, just remember I'm mostly looking for magic/ranged/skilled characters, as we have plenty of front-liners.

That sounds incredible thanks. And no worries about upsetness, I knew this character wasn't what you were looking for to begin with, but I gave it a shot.

To you lucky explorers good luck.

Bummer. :( Still, congrats to those chosen. I hope you'll have a great campaign that lasts.

I'll see what I can salvage from my character and hit up Jon's recruitment thread.

If the thing against slayers more wide-spread by the way? I didn't go for extreme combat optimization at all with my character, but I suppose I could see how the class could be perceived as such...

Well good luck ladies, have a great time creating your own kingdom!

Not that I'm aware of, though every GM has their preferences, I suppose. I've known GMs that flat out despise druids, for example. It's probably probably personally for the best, though. I'm not sure how I would play Jester in a group full of female characters. (I imagine there are some interesting conversations coming up to be had with Erastil worshipers..)

Anyway, congratulations to the ladies that got in!

(Now to see what I can dust off from my own KM notes and what all survived a hard-drive crash...)

Congratulations and Good (Chaotic) Luck to all of you! I do NOT envy you having to make the choice! I'll keep an eye here and on my PM box, should you need a new recruit, and think Carrack would fit, but as I'm trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible, I won't be following along.

For the record, I think Carrack COULD work with the ladies, but I understand perfectly not getting selected.

Congratulations to all. Have a GREAT campaign. :)

Thanks DM Jesse! Have fun y'all!

Although I imagine interest has started to wander from this thread, I decided to create a Teaser for a Kingmaker campaign of my own.

(I also might have decided on a bit of a grandiose appellation to post under for it ;))
