I've "heard" of it but I've never played using it and know nothing about how it works.

Terri Riverrun |

It's pretty cheap to pick up, 5 to 10 dollars I think. It uses aspects instead of attributes to give +2 or -2 to a roll. You can spend points during play to invoke an aspect for a +2, or some other advantage, but the GM or another player can compel an aspect against you for -2, or some other disadvantage, and a Fate Point. There are skills, but you need to make sure you have at least the same number of skills on a lower tier than you have on a higher tier. So you can't have three skills at +4 unless you have three skills at +3, +2, and +1. You determine success by rolling 4 fate dice (d6s with two blanks, two +'s, and two -'s instead of numbers.) add the +'s and -'s, then your skill, any bonuses, and any penalties. Once you have the result, compare it to what you needed. There are degrees of success, so it's not just I tied/beat it. You could tie, and succeed, but there's a complication. You could succeed, or you can succeed with style (beat the difficulty by 4 or more.) Succeeding with style allows you to add an aspect to the scene, character, or situation that you can invoke for free once during the scene.
I probably did a horrible job of explaining that, but I think I got the gist. It's much simpler than Pathfinder.
The only problem is, I also I have a PFRPG that I am working on and wanted to run that game as soon as I got it ready, so I'm not sure if I'm ever going to run this little one-shot at all.

Cassandra Wagner |

Mm-mm.
So, while we wait on word from our GM, I have a question for all of you. Have you ever heard of the Fate system? I've got an idea for a one-off using the system that could grow into a longer campaign, and was kinda curious how obscure it was.
Right now? I'd probably put Fate as the second most played system (if you count D&D and PF as a single system). Maybe third depending on how popular the new Star Wars system is. Evil Hat's done an amazing job of popularizing Fate.
So no, not obscure at all. :) I've run a Dresden Files game myself, which is Fate based.

Wednesday Daud |

Hmm, it sounds familiar to the Star Wars game by Fantasy Flight Games my real life group plays, unfortunately I'm not a fan of that system.

Terri Riverrun |

It maybe, but I did paraphrase it a good bit. I also have been living under a rock apparently. :P
So, compared to running a pathfinder campaign, how easy is it to run a Fate game?

Amira Oenestria |

I've heard of it just because of Dresden Files but never played it or read any of it's materials.

Cassandra Wagner |

On the plus side: It is less complicated that Pathfinder. Less moving bits. Fewer situational modifiers. More freedom of movement for the GM.
On the negative side: Each ability is essentially a new power and few work alike. There's more onus on the GM to work the story and interpret results.
And on the whole, FATE requires a GOOD group who can work together to tell a story. With the wrong group it is a disaster.

Terri Riverrun |

That's good to know. I know I have several people in the two games I'm running that are really good at bouncing off me and the other players. It makes for some fun games.

Tolenn |

Can't say I've ever used the system.
Hope all is well with Crispy.

Zart the Lost |

Hey guys... remember me? Well, two of you hopefully do. ;-)
Just thought I'd let you know that Chris (DM Crispy) is absent from our games also... and also without word. Very unusual for him.
I sent an email to (what I'm sure was) an alternate email address of his (it was AOL... so that's why I think it's not his real one). No response as yet from that either. We never managed to get his cell number, so... we're stuck too.
We've gamed together for a year and a half or so, and this has never happened before (for longer than 48 hours).
Anyway, since we'd played together before and I knew Crispy was still running for you - I just thought I'd let you guys know (erm, that I have no more info than you do). We are also in the 'hope he's alright' boat. We just want our Chris back. I think best case at the moment is he had to quit PbP cold turkey for one reason or another.... and it's temporary. I don't want to think about alternatives.
Either way, though, it may be an idea for you folk to look for an alternative GM (maybe only to step in for a little while).

Wednesday Daud |

:(
Thanks for the heads up though.
...
Can Raamanti GM?

Raamanti |

"ALAS BUT MY TIME COMMITMENTS FORBID IT," comes the voice like distant rumbling thunder, "(ALSO, ZART NEEDS SOMEONE TO MOTHER HIM) HOWEVER, MANY FOLK HAVE HAD LUCK WHEN REQUESTING ON THE RECRUITMENT FORUMS (AND ELSEWHERE) WHEN THEY HAVE A FULL GROUP LIKE YOURS."

Wednesday Daud |

:(
But I like you (and Crispy)...

Terri Riverrun |

Oh boy.
Well, He's also in a game I GM, and I haven't heard from him, so yeah, this is a little worrying. Hopefully we'll hear from him soon.

Cassandra Wagner |

Why don't we give him until Monday. If we haven't heard anything by then, we can talk about how we want to proceed then?

Victor Rivilon |

Well I guess we could take ourselves to the recruitment forum and search for a GM after Monday.
Since Cassandra came back I've been thinking it feels a bit redundant having two arcane casters. Yes Victor and Cass are pretty different when it comes to skills and spells but still if you guys are fine with it I wouldn't mind switching to another character with a class that could add more versatility to the group. Maybe an extra martial character? Another melee guy with a focus on maneuvers to help our front liners score more hits? or a ranged character? It's really up to how you all feel about it. Me personally I don't mind continuing playing with Victor, but I also don't mind switching to another character.

Cassandra Wagner |

I like Victor. I think he's fine. I'm never one to say 'you have to play X because the party needs Y'. Play what you'll enjoy most.

Terri Riverrun |
3 people marked this as a favorite. |

I agree with Cassandra on this one. You can have two characters that are identical mechanically, down to traits and spells, and still have totally different characters.
Besides Terri hasn't had a chance to even talk to Victor yet. If you decide to play someone else, She'll be giving you the puppy-eyes or doom.

Zart the Lost |

:(
But I like you (and Crispy)...
I like you too! It's one of the prime reasons I thought to post here with Chris so absent. If you can't find a GM at all for the game, do PM me. I know a few GMs out there (and I know some folk who know even more), and I might be able to hook one of them in to help you guys out.

Wednesday Daud |

Okies, and thank you for all of this.

Tolenn |

Yeah, victor....play what enjoy.
Indeed, Zart , hopefully we won't need your help, but the offer is appreciatex

Cassandra Wagner |

It has been, sadly, over 15 days since Crispy last posted. I think we need to discuss what to do next. Whatever we do, things need to be open for him to join back up when he returns.

Wednesday Daud |

*nods sadly*
I guess we can take Zart up on his offer.

Tolenn |

Yeah, unfortunately its our best bet .
I'm sure Crispy will understand, if he returns that is.

Wednesday Daud |

PMd Zart earlier, so he's asking...

Zart the Lost |

Hey guys, my contacts have yielded nothing, I'm afraid.
Feel free to use that or similar in looking for a GM. Just start up a new recruitment thread titled "Looking for GM: Curse of the Crimson Throne" or similar, with an explanation similar to mine above. You should be able to find a GM. Post it at about 9pm-ish USA eastern time to get the best exposure.
Let me know if you get no response and I can try bumping the thread a little for you, or also try other channels.
You could also try contacting the online VC, Jesse Davis (IronHelixx) for help, but he's probably going to be overly busy until the end of December sorting out PbP Gameday 4.

Tolenn |

Thanks for your efforts,Z.

Wednesday Daud |

Yes, thankies Zart :3
Soooo, who wants to put up the post?

Amira Oenestria |

How's this?
Solid regular group firmly entrenched in 2nd book of Adventure Path is seeking a replacement GM. If you're interested check out our progress and play-style Here

Terri Riverrun |

Works for me. Thanks Zart, we appreciate the help.
Also, you might want to add where we are at in a spoiler. This should help GMs know where to pick up.

Terri Riverrun |

So, no luck on finding a GM then? I don't think anyone I know of has any room to gm a game at the moment, and I would try, but I'm not sure I'd be able to keep a reasonable pace.
